- This woodturning video is a woodturning project full of cracks. But don't let that stop you. watch the video and I'll demonstrate.
This is wood I found while walking in the woods. The wood is pacific madrone which is beautiful wood. I sanded to 500 grit, cleaned with denatured alcohol, and finished with my homemade friction polish.
By the way...its twig pot. These things sell great at shows and craft fairs. fill the booth with these and start collecting the money.
I hope you enjoy/enjoyed with new woodturning video.

Handball and biker's gloves are a woodturner's friend. Great piece.
Yes they are!
great idea for cracks---made a cute vase-- thanks
Thank you Lynda!
Appreciate your views!
There's some lovely character in this piece. Great work
Thank you!
I really like the wood grain in this one.
Thanks for watching!
Wood like this doesn't have cracks, it has features waiting for embellishment! Great piece Rus!
That's a great way of saying it Tim.👍
Cool vase I have some key and aluminum shavings I might use on my next video thanks for the idea stay safe Bud 👍👍👍👍
You bet Tony. I have some brass parts I'm gonna grind up for shavings to do that as well. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful little vase Rus! What a great idea, using the coloured Sand!👍
Thank you Heather. It looks great but it does dull the tools. Not a big deal though. Thanks for watching.
Nice option rather than resin. Will have to give it a try. 👍
Thank you. It works great on smaller cracks and you don't have to let it sit to dry.
Interesting work. Thnx for sharing this. 😎
Thank you.
Brilliant mate lovely little bud vase
Thank you Barry.
nice vase Rus well done! 😃
Thanks. I appreciate that. Take care buddy.
well done mate
Thank you Mark. I appreciate you watching.
That’s a good idea. I’ve skipped over lots of pieces of wood just because I didn’t want to deal with the cracks. Black c a glue looks good but not on every situation. This adds another variable to lots of turning projects. Great idea man.
Thank you!
5 minute epoxy with food coloring is another option.
I appreciate you watching!
@@RcWoodturning what kind of 5 minute epoxy do you like to use? The last stuff I bought stunk up the place for days. Lol
@@k9insomniac783 I'm not sure what brand. I would have to look when I get a chance. I get it at Lowe's . It comes in 2 bottles. I believe they are 4.5 oz each. It's the only one they sell. The hardener has a slight smell. I only smell it when I first squeeze it out of the bottle. Once I mix the 2 together I don't notice it anymore. It's by no means overwhelming. I used it in my latest video posted yesterday. I mixed blue food coloring. It works very well. I used 2 drops and should have only used one drop. It's very concentrated.
@@RcWoodturning I sure appreciate your info sir. I’m thinking the last 5 minute stuff I got was gorilla glue brand It is obnoxious to say the least. Easily took 2 days from that smell to dissipate in the garage. I’m actually excited to learn this. It only makes sense now that I think about it. I’m a little slow sometimes. It takes me an hour and a half to watch 60 minutes. Lol. Thanks again man!
@@k9insomniac783 The stuff I use is called Devcon home. The smell is basically non existent.
Your work and imagination is amazing, but also is your camera work.
Thank you! I've put in a lot of time and work to get better at these things. It's nice to know that it shows. Thank you for that!
I appreciate it!
What are you filling the cracks with? Can’t tell what you’re using.
@@jjwpod In this video I used colored sand from the dollar store and CA glue.
After you fill the crack and apply the CA glue, how do you get it back to the original luster? The glue gets very dull - Thanks - Paul
Once I smooth it with the tool I sand thru the grits. 120, 180, 220, 320, 400. You can go higher if you want.
The secret is getting it smooth with the tool first. I cut with the wing to smooth it. It's called a shear cut. Also a wax with some grit helps at the end (like a polishing compound), but I haven't found that necessary. The process is similar to finishing epoxy resin.
I hope that helps.
Thanks for watching Paul!
I appreciate it!
What is/how do you make your ‘home made friction polish’? The finish looks great. Thanks in advance.
Thanks Rob. I use 2 parts shellac 1 part denatured alcohol and 1 part boiled linseed oil for a little darker finish or 1 part mineral oil for a lighter finish. Although I'm thinking about switching to walnut oil.
I apply 3 to 5 coats.
Keep pressure until your fingers start to feel warm and your done.
Thanks for the question and watching.
What did you put in it
It's sable granules. I got it at dollar tree.
Great work I would like to know where you got that chuck with the small Jaws ❓️
Thank you Johnny. If your referring to the silver chuck at the beginning it's a nova g3. I bought it years ago in a kit. It was an aniversary edition that came with 3 sets of jaws. I can't find the exact same as I bought but this looks like the current version of what I have.

Thanks for watching!
I appreciate it.
Thanks I'll have to look into that keep up the good work
👍
The cracks don't stop me. It's when it flies apart while spinning on the lathe that stops me.
That's definitely a bummer. Fortunately I haven't experienced that.
My theory is if the crack goes half way thru or more I don't use it. Don't know if that's made a difference, but that's what I do.
Thanks for watching Bill!
I appreciate it!
