What an extraordinary interview with Joe Fagan! Completely honest and totally lacking in media sound bites. Great stuff!
RIP Michael Robinson. Anfield Legend. YNWA
Joe Fagan, what a lovely man!
+mkrbrtsn1 Lovely man and compare him to purple nose Ferguson or Mourinho and see the difference maybe Klopp is on the same wavelength as Joe so sad though that Joe retired with the lasting memory of Heysel being the last match he managed in
Hey tosser I'm back have some respect @eddiepower3876
Loved that yellow kit great interviews YNWA
Good day. Thank you so much for the exellent quality video. Enjoyed and like of course. Bravo! Greetings from country Azerbaijan
What great players in this Liverpool! The best team in the world mid 70's mid 80's: no doubt! YNWA
i was on the Kop for the first leg and I can vividly remember the disappointment of drawing 0-0. I saw Bilbao players punching the air and they thought they'd done it. But the away-goals rule is there for a purpose and this Liverpool team was a winning-machine!
...same in '81...Breitner...(hell of a player)...giving it Billy Big Spuds after the Anfield game...I'm sure Bayern gave out travel details to Paris as well...
Smokin’ Joe, Liverpool legend!!
Fagan: 'don't make the words too long' haha. Liverpool at their best always understood that football was a simple game. That Liverpool team won a treble that season, and was one of the best Liverpool sides ever.
Rest In Peace Liverpool No10 Michael Robinson who passed away 28/4/20........
Very highly respected in Spain when his playing career finished......
28/4/2024
es muy estranjo a mirar Michael Robinson jugando contra un equipo espanol cuando en un corto tiempo depues el estaba viviendo en Espana..y el jugaba por Irlanda tambien...classico...viva Bilbao...
gotta love olde Joe
Joe fagan a modest man lived around the corner from the ground in lynnholme Road L4 a proper football man
Alan Kennedy with a right foot cross and Rushie with a header well that never happened that often lol
Joe Fagan - a real gentleman !
Aúpa Athletic!
Hasta ahí llego el Athletic club de Bilbao, cayó ante el campeón de ese año. Qué recuerdos...Un saludo.
Como molaba el fútbol de aquella época. Que nostalgia.
I was only a wee six year old growing up in London when this was all happening…l do vividly remember the final in Rome with grobberlaar’s wobbly legs…And then my auncle and aunt going apsolutley wild when we won…
Back when Liverpool rule d european football nobody could stop us! Not even Real madrid.
“Not even Real Madrid” lol
Madrid couldn’t stop anyone. Prior to 2000 the last European Cup title they won was in 1966 (I don’t count 1998 since it was a penalty goal vs Juve).
Don't use big words Elton, brilliant!
I remember this tie and being terrified because Andoni Goicachea 'The Butcher of Bilbao' was cleared to play.
He'd just put Maradona in hospital by breaking his legs, and before the game he said he would do the same to Dalglish!!
It was definitely a war out there in this game but the mighty Reds got the job done!
Sorry, but you are really an stupid hoolligan saying nosenses. Greetings from Bilbao, Aupa Athletic.
@@nongogoahanzangoa6872 the 'stupid hooligan' is you, what I say is fact and you know it.
Souness probably had a quite word..
@@darganx I was watching that game live, and you??. Andoni Goikoetxea "the Butcher", and you the oficial fool of England. Greetings from Bilbao. Aúpa Athletic.
@@nongogoahanzangoa6872 Whereabouts in Madrid is Bolbao?
For some reason, this looks like the same stadium that Brazil beat Scotland in the 82 World Cup.. I'm sure the end on the right was where Eder placed that lovely chip over Alan Rough? Either that or where Brazil played Russia, as all the goals went in at the other end! I just get Brazil 82 vibes from Bilbao's pitch..
Wrong end of the country mate. We played Brazil in Seville which is in the south. Bilbao hosted England's group games in that World Cup.
@@matthewleslie4448 OK, thanks for the info.
That Liverpool side was like a machine so good
Barney Rubble man, what WOULD Liverpool have done in the 1980s without Alan Kennedy?
I saw him play for Northwich Victoria in 93' at Dartford,he must have been in his mid- late 30's and fuck me he was STILL the best player on the pitch.LEGEND! YNWA
Needed a few of these type of players against ath Madrid last week
Joe Fagan retired from football coaching in 1985.
What age IS Martin Tyler tonight I listened to him commentate on Exeter v Liverpool 33 years after this game here and he still sounds exactly the same WTF
+Eddie Power 70, and still going strong.!
Didn't get excited about Liverpool all them years ago still doesn't now
Athletic Club, no Atletico Bilbao.
In the UK we call them Athletic Bilboa
Bilboa?
I call him Rocky Billboa

What a great player Rush was ?
I was at the first leg of this at Anfield. There was a buzz of excitement because Bilbao had a player named Andoni Goikoetxea, nicknamed the Butcher of Bilbao. He'd just returned from a long suspension for a flying double-footed lunch on an opponent. Bilbao were very defensive and parked the bus. It finished 0-0 and at the final whistle, I remember Bilbao players pumping fists, believing they had done the job. I always felt that we had a chance with this team however.
Was on Maradona- got a 10 game ban
goikoetxea was an animal all he could do was injure ppl basically he was the Spanish vinny jones the fukn wanker kept the boots he broke maradonas ankle with in a glass box says it all
That so called butcher.. How tough was he up against a rough n tumble British.. Irish centre forward.. Not worth 3 cheers.. Northern Irelands Billy Hamilton made shit of the ponce.. World Cup 82. Our fellas.. Stapleton. Quinn n Cascarino would have enjoyed lorryin the fucker outta it.
Jeune, Zubi était déjà très bon.
Uncle Joe such a nice guy
same match in dublin today
Aupa Athletic!!
I thought there was a ban back then on shirt advertising in Europe??
If I remember, there was no ban but it was tradition in the final only for there not to be sponsor names on the shirt. The last year this tradition happened was 1994 between Barcelona and AC Milan. Since then it has changed.
RIP MICHAEL ROBINSON
Same No10 Michael Robinson formerly of Man City and Brighton, who ended up being a presenter on Spanish television years later. Sadly, like John Wark & David Speedie later, big money signings who were never as good as the unknowns Liverpool bought like Hansen, Rush, Nicol & Whelan...
Wark and Speedie were good.
Wark top scorer in 85 playing in midfield.
Speedie scored a lot of goals in his brief spell. Memorable equaliser at OT and a double against Everton
God sent the smoking Joe to Earth in a vain attempt to explain to the mortals what pure humanity is.
what a team this wasNot sure how much impact Fagan had on it! he seems like your favourite uncle but a bit senileI think its safe to say the team managed itself as there were so many great players/professional's in the teamFagan doesnt strike you as a master techinician who out thought his opposite numberThis team went out and played with people like grobbelaar/Hansen/souness/Dalglish etc etc... doing everything with class and composureWhen Fagan left after Heysel ,Dalglish stepped into his first coaching role as player/manager without missing a heartbeatI know he had Paisley as someobody to lean on,but he seemed to be on the same mould as Fagan. A nice bloke who was a bit of a dittry old manI think the famed boot room did all the coaching and scouting and keot it ticking over for 2 decades till souness dismantled everything. Imagine getting rid of that boot room experience and the top playersThe club never recovered as it co incided with the SKY TV changes and UTD left them behind
Like Paisley before him, Joe Fagan was only a reluctant manager when he took over, aged 62. Being part of the fabric since the Shankley era, he was steeped in the Anfield tradition and knew as much about football and players as anyone. He was a very popular choice with the players and everyone wanted to do well for him. He didn't change an awful lot - there was no need to. Despite coming across as just a 'nice old man' he could dish out severe bollockings to players whom he felt under performed (Craig Johnston once or twice on the receiving end). Fagan also made several astute signings including Paul Walsh, John Wark and Jan Molby. Nothing short of 100% was acceptable and that's why they were so successful. Liverpool were always a very modest club - no egos or 'superstars'. They weren't allowed at the club.
...this reply makes no sense...take yourself away from society...
Fucks sake.. The man banished Dalglish to the subs bench 4 a game or 3.. Wake up call time.. No sentimental guff.. Souness replacing Case.. Lee replacing Ray Kennedy.. Take a bribe replaced Clem.. Lawrenson. Taking over 1st Alan Kennedy then Phil Thompson.. As Hansen took over from Crazy Horse.. The magnificent Emlyn Hughes.. The list goes on and on.. Fagan was a Liverpool Football Club life source.. Take it from us oul fellas.. And my club is the Hammers.
The OP is clearly an Evertonian or Manc.. nice of you to acknowledge that Utd bought their leagues with Sky money lol
"a dirrrty old man" ! What's that supposed to mean?
Kim derdi ki yıllar sonra Galatasaray'da Ulubatlı Sounnes olacak..
Sir Joe Fagan...
ATHLETIC,
european Cup finals with Liverpool were the most boring! Only exception: the 77 final vs.Borusia!
Yes, that game in Istanbul was a colossal bore, wasn’t it?
Liverpool gave the world the most exciting European Cup/Champions League and UEFA Cup finals ever.
