- Barry Davies interviews outgoing Liverpool manager Joe Fagan following Liverpool's 1-0 defeat by Juventus at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, played under the shadow of the terrible events that preceded the match.

I am an Evertonian, but to me, Joe Fagan was one of the finest men to grace the football world. A true gentleman. I have family members who knew Joe, and apparently he was just the same off the camera - a really humble man, very witty but gentle and self effacing.
To be honest I’m in total agreement with what you’re saying I’m a Liverpool supporter and was there with me dad and granddad and i was totally shocked with what happened i felt so bad for Joe and it was a terrible way he had his final game
I really don’t want anyone who supports Liverpool in this way

Joe is one of the great forgotten managers in English football. He achieved a treble the year before. I’m an arsenal fan, big Joe was a gent.
First time seeing that interview. Joe Fagan a gentleman to his fingertips. Not enough people like him in the world of sport today
Me and my family are bitter blues but my mum adored Joe Fagan. She'd walk by his house on the way to school and he'd always say hello and ask her about Everton.
Not long after Heysel he went to her school and held a talk with the lads there and no girls were allowed. My mum argued with the teachers that most of the lads never even went to watch Everton or Liverpool and she had been going to Goodison for years, and her and Fagan himself convinced the school to let her go to the assembly.
A truly great manager and a great person who was a great representative of his club and even more so the City as a whole.
Poor Joe...never got over the tragic events at heysel....A sad and tragic way to retire from football...RIP

My all time favourite Liverpool Manager and that was way before Heysel. So so sad to see the great man looking that depressed. RIP Mr Fagan , you'll never be forgotten, YNWA.
Cant imagine any manager today would make such a long and open interview after any game let alone one that contained a disaster. They were scary times for football. I remember going to old trafford with my dad as a youngster and it was electric but bordering on dangerous. There was always the threat of trouble. Football as a whole was a ticking timebomb for me and the fact that the timebomb went off during a showpiece game between two of the best teams in the world at the time magnified it all the more.
Jonathon Gates not condoning anything Liverpool fans did that night but uefa have to take a large chunk of responsibility for choosing a crumbling decrepit stadium for the biggest game of the season. I'm a United fan and old Trafford in the 80's was brilliant, a lot better than the quiet church like atmosphere it has now

No one was 'murdered' at Heysel, and it's a common pattern with United fans to use that word without apparently understanding what it means. The fans who died were suffocated in a crowd crush. They were at the opposite end of the terrace from where the Liverpool fans were standing when they died.

Megalodon - really? From 83 in a FA cup game at OT it was a hooligan fest even before the train pulled into Manchester. There wouldn't be a window left intact. Then you ran the gauntlet getting to and from the ground. Whilst in the stadium you were constantly dodging missiles. I witnessed that every season until 92. I remember family members mentioning a league cup tie in 76 when hundreds of Evertonians got a hiding. Most clubs had a hooligan element in the 70s and 80s Utds the biggest of them all. You lot were banned from Europe well before Liverpool - remember St Ettienne?

This is the first time that I have seen this interview, Mr Fagan gave a very dignified interview.
Joe Fagen was a great man and considering what a shameful night that was for English Football that was an incredible interview.

That was a very honest interview, seems like he was an honorable modest man. Tragic lessons were learned that night.....and football still needs to keep learning from it.

I'm only 9 years old on 1.985, but i'll remember perfectly watching the final on TV. Was an horror. What a disaster, poor JOE FAGAN, great coach.

He'd already announced his retirement a couple of days before the disaster. What he saw at Heysel would have taken away any thought of ever changing his mind.

Fagan, Moran and Evans were a massive part of Liverpool's success through 60's, 70's and 80's.

We also of course had the Bradford City fire only a few weeks before, then in 1989 the Hillsborough disaster. At least stadium safety for the crowd are miles better than they were in 1980s.

5:01 Ultimately they brought in modern football to England by creating the Premier League in 92 which forced the clubs to modernize their stadium by converting it to an all-seater model (cf Taylor report), also the tickets prices increased dramatically which forced many of the violent supporters out of the stadiums.

Looked devastated there did Joe. He was Liverpool through and through and didn't really deserve his tenure to end on such a horrible note. Heysel was probably the lowest point ever for English football, and Liverpool supporters still don't accept the damage they did to the game in this country in getting everyone banned. That said, UEFA should never have picked such a sub-standard stadium for such a big game.

Yes the game should not have been held in a ground that was not up for a match between us and Juventus , U E A F A were to blame for staging a game of this magnitude , and yes Liverpool fans too, but if you were there , the bottles , stones and everything else that came over the chicken wire fence that separated us from them was unbeliveable , i was only 16 at the time and was there with my dad , we never watched the match we just went back to the hotel.
Yes a bad few stormed the fence , but why were U E A F A not to blame , Why were our flags with there poles taken out before we went in and Juventus fans not , who were the Juventus fans on the pitch goading the police with scarves rapped round there faces .

I can't disagree with much that you've said. The segregation was a joke and so was the ticket arrangements with that so-called 'neutral section' which ended up full of Juve fans.That ground was due to be knocked down and rebuilt anyway so god knows why UEFA choose it. But if both sets of fans go and watch the match and behave themselves then this doesn't happen. It was easy for UEFA to just put all the blame on English fans given our then reputation, but a few others factors caused this disaster. UEFA should have took more responsibilty and it was just Liverpool who should have been banned.
Yes , sadly i agree with you , i was caught up in the Hillsborough disaster , which changed my life, im not comparing it to Heysel but i no what a crush is like and i can imagine what it was like for the fans who died and thank god escaped .
I love my football but my dad has always said to me that every game we play , win or lose we should respect the other team and thats what ive always done.
Ive been to so many games home , away ,Europe and all over the world but the one thing i respect is that have a laugh if you win or lose and just take it .

That's why the referee didn't give the penalty to Liverpool, for a clear and blatant foul on Ronnie Whelan. Apparently he said to the Liverpool players " there's no way we're going to 1-1 ". It's also why he gave the penalty to Juventus for a foul on Boniek which was clearly way outside the penalty area.

The only common denominator is bad policing. Heysel and Hillsborough are also further linked as they were poor choice of venue...Heysel was a dump and Hillsborough was only marginally better than Heysel.

The ground was falling apart, no good standard segregation partition sectioning and many people did not get their tickets checked, they just went in ... This Was The Outstanding FACTOR!.
Another factor (from the Liverpool fans perspective) was the post events of the previous years final played in Rome/Italy against Roma who lost to Liverpool on penalties ... On leaving the stadium, Liverpool fans including Many Women and children were pelted with stones/bricks/wood spat on and physically attacked.
Coming back to the Brussels final in 85 pre match, in the day many "Non Liverpool" English National Front (N.F.) scum bags were there with anti Italian slogans goading Liverpool fans into violence against the Italians ... Liverpool fans just wanted to drink, sing and play football with Italian fans ...
In the Effort of "a ground" at the final, the Italian fans changed and became very aggressive throwing all the things I mentioned in Italy, plus fireworks and showing knives ... the N.F. scum bags goaded Liverpool fans again and "It Worked This Time" ... they charged on the Italians, they ran and The Crush Happened !!! Tragic.
I blame three parties; U.E.F.A. for using such an Unexceptionable venue

That was 20 minutes after the final whistle. Liverpudlians also claimed UEFA of instructing the referee, under no circumstances was he to allow Liverpool to become European Champions. These Liverpudlians,who now seem to believe they hold the moral high ground of English Football, we're telling jokes about Heysel. Immediately after the game it was Italians not liking walls ( Walls Ice-cream) not a funny joke but it's not a funny subject is it? Then after the ban it was " we knocked Everton out of the European Cup without kicking a ball ". Now imagine the uproar if Hillsborough jokes were told. After Hillsborough we had the City quite rightly coming together. The blue and red mascots at the Goodison Derby walking onto the pith to the song ' he ain't Heavy, he's My Brother was something Every Evertonian should be proud of. Then at Anfield years later Kenwright and Martinez put Liverpools officials to shame speaking from the heart. Move onto Suarez and his despicable racial abuse of Evra. The club only brought shame onto themselves. Officials and players behaved deplorably. Yes I know a thing or two about class.
I was 16 at the time looking forward to a great and hopefully seeing liverpool win the european cup but what unfolded was tragic I dont think the Italians were wholly innocent I'm not disputing it was liverpool fans who charged juventus fans but if the wall hadn't collapsed their wouldn't have been deaths or very few. Yet so many rival fans call us murderer's I'm not belittling what happened but the fans were charged with manslaughter as it was an accident.
The collapse of the wall actually helped the fans crushed up against it because it released the pressure of those fans and enabled them to escape. The people who died was a result of the crushing against that wall. If it had collapsed straight away then we probably wouldn’t have seen any deaths. Definitely not as many.
