Liverpool 4-0 Aberdeen (and Alex Ferguson), 1980

  • A Battle of Britain in the 1980-81 European Cup second round. Liverpool had a one-goal lead to take into this return leg, courtesy of a Terry McDermott strike. This was Alex Ferguson's first visit to Anfield and not his most memorable - the tie proved to be a baptism of fire for his Aberdeen side in their first European Cup adventure. Liverpool meanwhile would go on to win the trophy for the third time. Gerald Sinstadt commentates.

    I was at this game, Aberdeen fan travelled down from Scotland, and we were certainly given alesson in football class that night. Fergie, and Aberdeen, paid heed to that lesson and went on to greater things. It was great to see this Liverpool team play though, a different class.

    Liverpool back in the day where a different class.
    On pudding basin pitches too, fast moving and free flowing, a different class.
    And that's why Man Utd wanted to be like them.
    But know matter what they won in those years to me Liverpool where the bench mark, and I'm not a Liverpool supporter either.

      Klopp has brought that intensity back to Anfield. They were marauders then and they are marauders now. Defending against them must have been a nightmare when you had a centre half running through like Hansen... You can't defend against a team where everyone except the goalie is pushing on and running in diagonals into the box... must have felt like they were playing against 14 men

    Liverpool were an incredible team back then. For my team, Aberdeen, Fergie had just won his first trophy. The next few years would see some great signings, some brilliant young players come through, and culminate in the club's greatest ever team. I only wish that we, and other similar clubs were still able to win championships and European trophies today, but it was a different era back then, and much more of a level playing field

      Aberdeen had a great side back then, Big Hardy (dirty) defenders that knew how to defend, digging midfielders, silky fast wingers and deadly strikers, what wasn't to like? Fergie got the best out of everyone of them n they LOVED playing for Aberdeen. First game I was at Aberdeen handed out a 2-1 defeat, 84 Cup final, they just had that little bit extra and more class and self belief back then. They were a great fast clinical team whenever they turned it on but they won the chance to do that by winning their personal battles, they could lay the boot in and kick lumps out of anyone along the way if need be. Hardy basta*** and a deadly football team that feared nobody back then. This was probably the only lesson ever dished out to them n Fergie held grudges for Years after it towards Liverpool, Souness, Dalglish n Hansen.
      His bitterness about Liverpool n Those 3 Scottish players cost Scotland a place in next round of 86 World Cup.
      Bitter man.

    • @pertwee9376
      @pertwee9376 8 месяцев назад

      Absolute bollox! For a start it wasn't McDermot's tackle on McMaster it was Ray Kennedy, and it wasn't even a foul, nor was it given as one by the ref. The ball was there to be won and Ray Kennedy won it fairly under the rules that applied at the time. He would have got sent off today but it was a different game back then. There was no ill intent in that tackle, he just won the ball and McMaster was unfortunately injured. That kind of thing happened in those days and still does as a matter of fact. But that's one of the reasons why the rules have changed so much and why football is now a game of pufters. And if you think the match which Liverpool won 5-0 on aggregate, and in which they were already 1-0 up, hinged on that one unfortunate incident then you are deluding yourself.

      Tiki-taka isn't one touch football. Tiki-taka is slow, possession-based football that aims for like 80% possession each match.
      And nobody "invented" one-touch passing.

      It's not like Man United were paperweights before Alex Ferguson took the reins. Prior to his arrival, they had 7 League Titles, 6 FA Cup titles, and 1 European Cup to their credit. Sustained success isn't exactly an easy thing to maintain in professional sports. It's not like Liverpool has exactly been lighting up the football world since King Kenny's departure in 1990. Heck, Kenny couldn't even replicate that success in his brief return.

    • @scherben8870
      @scherben8870 8 лет назад +1

      +daztot The wheels had come off completely at United when Fergie took over; the team was second bottom after a slew of inadequate buys coupled with ageing, demotivated players. That said, many United fans were hugely unhappy with him for his first four/five years in charge, regarding him as an excuse maker who was hopelessly out of his depth at Old Trafford; we just seemed to be going nowhere, till it suddenly gelled.
      As for Bob Paisley, well, the man was a master tactician who knew exactly who to get to for the Anfield system. As Gordon McQueen has said, your recruitment was the best.

      Kenny was an absolute genius footballer and I was lucky to watch him play from 1978 to 1987.
      I remember a game at Anfield against West Brom and the Albion had parked the bus. Frustrated us all afternoon, until late on. Kenny had his back to two defenders and dipped to his right, then to his left. He spun and made a tiny bit of space on the edge of the area. A low shot placed trickled toward the far post and I watched in agony as the ball clipped the post and nestled into the net. I was directly behind the path of the ball on the Kop and we went nuts.

    That game, and I recall it well, could have gone either way. McGee had early chances and but for the Miller own goal it could so easily have finished 0 - 4 for the Mighty Dons. Liverpool were a decent outfit, don’t get me wrong, but fast forward 3 years and the Dons were the best team in Europe, bar none. The teams would be evenly matched today too, I believe, and Liverpool’s forward line would be no match for the likes of Cosgrove (a ballon d’or candidate no less) and others. Battle of Britain, bring it on! That final goal also had a touch of fortune about it.
