There is literally nothing worse than grinding for a really good shortcut only to be met with the “this shortcut requires X diary” message right after you try to use it. It’s like being kicked in the balls twice.
That just happened to me yesterday. I finally got 73 Agility for the Troll Stronghold roof shortcut so I wouldn't have to run inside and climb the ladder every time I wanted to go to the herb patch. I was so excited to finally use it, then it said it was a diary reward.

The absolute worst part about the Diary shortcuts is the game doesn’t even warn you before getting the Agility level that you won’t be able to use it because it requires Elite diary completion
Gotta remember that shortcuts also save you run energy, which in turn (depending on your agility lvl and inventory weight) can save you *just a few* more ticks. Great list, Idyl.
Amen to this. I've just started a new character, only have 40 agility atm and I'm running out of run energy constantly even with an empty inventory. The shortcuts not draining run energy saves a heck of a lot more than just a few ticks
I remember when I first encountered this shortcut, it was 2009 and I was 11 years old, I was literally on my first month of membership obviously 1 agility, when I saw that it required 12 agility to use I just went back to the brimhavem agility course that I encountered earlier to level up to be able to use it. I clearly remember it because I was at a friends house and I was frustated that we couldn't see the metal dragons that we saw on sosolid2k's videos.
I've always hated having to grind agility for good cerb trips, but its such a good useful shortcut that its always worth having. those 3 in tav dungeon are just great and scaled so perfectly
Biggest problem with shortcuts is that the animations take so friggin long. This is emphasized the most with RS3's hidey hole grapple, where you have to sit in front of a rock for THREE solid seconds before slowly taking the grapple and firing it. Something that has a high level agility requirement should have our character flying through the obstacle effortlessly, not taking their time to stop on every jump. That would actually make shortcuts useful without needing to intentionally design bad pathing.
Just a thought- diaries should lower the shortcuts within the area by a certain amount of levels. If you completed the Falador elite diary and it lowered the agility req of the shortcuts by an amount, that would feel like a good change rather than having shortcuts hard locked between diaries.
One nice use of the Iowerth lvl 84 agility shortcut is that if you are killing the nechs and a superior spawns, you can use going through the shortcut and then going back to de-agro the chaotic death spawns, which drastically reduces the damage you will take as each of the 3 spawns use 1 of the 3 combat styles.
13:53 "I truly cannot figure out why this obstacle even exists" This is because when bursting Nechryaels you can de-agro immediatly by taking the shortcut (back and forth if you want) so tanking 20 death spawns (or the ones from the superior) can be evaded and you can eat or log out then go back to Nech's whenever you want.
I love when osrs content creators make videos like this (you and j1mmy) i dont see it as just bad mouthing the game but constructive criticism that jagex may not have thought about since agility came out so long ago. thank you for the top tier content
The blue dragon pipe was the only reason I continued to grind after getting graceful. It makes getting blue dhide and good prayer bones as an ironman so helpful.
Idk if this bothers anyone else but: why are there so many different (random) levels for agility shortcuts? Why not just like "here are 5 new shortcuts you can use at lvl 60, 70, etc.."? Or like "do all rock climbs at lvl 65, do all rope swings at 32", which would be a method that would actually make sense & give a visual cue for when you'd unlock a shortcut.
I know a lot of people that paid for agility training services. I'd rather train RC to 200mil than train another character to 85 agility or even 70 just for quest.
I completely agree, so many of the shortcuts feel like a waste of time. I got my agility up to 56 getting graceful and now it's a real challenge for me to want to get to 70, to be able to use just 1 worthwhile shortcut in the taverly dungeon. And it is soooooo slow to train, it really is the wrost skill to train. I find it really crazy how some skills you can exp rates in the millions but others your lucky to get 15k exp and hour
@Mr Spaghetti Ethically sourced could be if an AI art program was exclusively made with artwork submitted by artists themselves instead of stolen. Buuuuuut the fact that it doesn't exist yet proves that they don't care about artists, and that artists don't want their work used.
I remember when agility was added. I trained it a lot because I thought it was kinda fun. Then came the rune crafting craze with the abyss and I was already geared for rune running.
Dude I grinder 72 agility for that one at the herb patch in the troll area just to get boned by diary I was so excited to use that patch that when I tried to climb the rock got rejected never went back
This is why you always, ALWAYS, have the wiki open while playing and look up everything before you commit a large amount of time to something. The exact same thing happened to me when I did the Feud quest so I could do the desert quests and get Ali Morrisane to sell me law runes on my ironman, only to realize that I had to get my Herblore up, and thus my farming up, so I could make antivenom pots and do the desert quests without dying to the snakes.
troll stronghold roof? The climb next to the wall (coming from troll stronghold teleport)? It requires 73 agility and the quest making friends w my arm oh I see, it was changed. It used to require the hard diary fremenik, but that requirement was removed May '24
Um, ackchyually. The increased energy regeneration definitely wasn't unknown back in the day and even though agility is a members skill, that aspect of the skill even worked in F2P. It was a moderately important stat for F2P wars and to incentivise our members to do the tedious training our clan would sometimes pool together GP and have an agility training competition and whoever gained the most agility EXP that week won the GP, this was between 18-20 years ago.
I used to think the grapple mechanic was one of the coolest as a kid. I remember using that Falador wall grapple, and Catherby island grapple many times. It just goes to show you how much less we cared about efficiency back then haha.
I would find it super neat if agility was used as a quality of life skill. So as it is now the best benefit is run energy, but I think some more quality of life ones could be moving from one side of falador to another in an interesting way. Maybe there is a ladder that leads to the top of the castle and a rope is tied from there to the party room. You click once and you scale the castle and slide all the way over there. So instead of clicking 20 times and walking a boring path, you click once and do something neat
As a Diary Cape holder, I do feel the diary locked shortcuts are kind of silly to lock behind them. But I really think the shortcuts that need the most looking at are the grapple shortcuts. Make them all 1-time things you need to setup. Although some of them are one way, and maybe kind of clumsy to set up (Like the water obelisk one). You could also alternatively change a few of them to be entirely different kind of shortcuts and adjust the requirements accordingly. Such as instead of a grapple over the north Falador wall, it's a hole at the bottom of the wall you need to squeeze through. And for the love of God, change those shitty shortcuts where you need to click on a million click boxes to use into one. Looking at you stepping rocks by the brutal red and steel dragons in Catacombs of Kourend.
Has Jagex ever polled introducing the grapple hidey-hole mechanic from RS3 to the grapple shortcuts? You build a stash, just like with clue scrolls, store a grapple in there, and then can use that grapple for the shortcut (I don't quite remember if you had to manually replace them on the other side, or if it was automatic, because RS3 then made that obsolescent with the toolbelt...).
The one grapple hook shortcut I used to constantly use during my tree farm runs was the one from catherby to taverly, very useful since it's between a fruit tree patch and a tree patch, saves a bunch of time and doesn't require ressources, although it would be nice if the grappling hook stayed there permanently.

They need to get rid of all diary requirements for shortcuts. What other skill has diary requirements for one of the skills main functions and purpose?! It'd be like, if you were required to complete the Kourend Elite diary to cut redwood trees at all.
my favorite diary locked agility requirements are the wilderness ones since there is substantial benefits to laughing at your would be killer being stuck.

You worked really hard on this & since osrs is supposed to basically be a democracy with changes, this spreadsheet should definitely be looked at by Jagex
Even though Jagex changed the Karamja shortcut to Duradel from Elite to Medium, it still requires the Hard diaries to teleport to the gem mines which is the only reason you would run into this shortcut lol
Imagine how cool this game would be if there was low-tick shortcuts just scattered all over the place and tons more 'teleport' esqe shortcuts that just jump you ahead rapidly. Like take the current amount of shortcuts and just 10x it and speed it all up. Make it so if you're really high agility you can quickly do 3 or 4 shortcuts to get from varrock to falador in a minute. Make it an alternative to teleporting if you know the routes. Start with routes between towns, then add shortcuts to popular resources and monster spots. Man it would be really awesome.
Also when rooftop shortcuts came out they polled whether or not they should buff the agility xp rates and people said no because they didnt want changes at the beginning of osrs. I think after this much time for people to see how slow agility actually is and having the voting threshold lowered, they should repoll it to see people's opinions in the current era. I know it would be frustrating to people who already got 99 agility, but if you 'suffered' then you know its not fun. It's bad game design to have people continue to suffer through such an active skill that has such low reward. The amount of time it takes to get 99 agility will never be saved by using shortcuts, so its a loss of time straight up. Agility should honestly be 2x the current xp rate if not 2.5x.
The Al Kharid ones are so unbelievably ridiculous. The palace one is probably going to be one of the first few you see in the game, one that's disproportionately more useful the earlier you could get access to it because you do so many early quests in that area, and then you can't use it for a ridiculous amount of time AND the reqs are too high AND it requires a diary. It's easily one of the most tilting things I can think about this game, and this game is full of those.
Bro you hit the nail on the head, over and over. Fokin marvelous content. All I can say, as someone with 87 agility, is the goddamn shortcuts, like everything in this game, take WAY more time to acquire than are worth. Great job! I don't think anyone will top your take on the broken skill of Agility in OSRS, ever.
Never heard of you. Stumbled upon this video while just randomly browsing. Absolutely loved it. Good job man. You have great energy and i like the delivery’s. Bravo 🥳
But I did use the grapple shortcut from the water obby to catherby beach... It was on my ironman for training crafting.... Training crafting the long and profitable way. 1-Mine sandstone 2-Grind sandstone 3-Bank buckets of sand 4-Grow giant seaweed 5-Collect giant seaweed 6-burn giant seaweed 7-Combine buckets of sand and soda ash to make molten glass 8-Blow molten glass into unpowered orbs 9-Starting from catherby bank, go east and use the grapple shortcut to get to taverly. 10-Go to taverly dungeon. 11-Go to the high level spike jump shortcut near the entrance of taverly dungeon, this brings you to the spider area between the black demons and hellhounds. 12-Run west to fire obby. 13-Charge unpowered orbs into fire orbs. 14-Go shortly east and up the ladder to the water obby. 15-Use grapple shortcut to go back to catherby bank, 16-Bank, collect more materials for another run. 17-Go to lunar isle. 18-Take entire cash stack and world hop to buy battlestaves from the walking chicken house vendor. 19-Bank and repeat step 18 until you dont have any many. 20-make fire battlestaves. 21-high-alch fire battlestaves. 22-Repeat from step 18 to 22. I made over 30 thousand fire battlestaves, the biggest cash stack i've ever had, and got lvl 90+ magic and crafting. I think I'm still lvl 90 as that was my goal at the time for zenyte and onyx jewelry. ... Oh yea, I spent hours trying to buy cosmic runes from wildy rune shop, gave up because bots, and then did temple trekking or whatever its called minigame in the morytania swamp for pure essence. Then I went and runecrafted 11K cosmic runes... I ran between the cosmic altar and the zanaris bank, the shortcut was really nice there as well. At some point along the journey I finished SOTE and started buying cosmic runes from the rune shop in the elf city. OSRS name - Riariti, you'll find me on the Personal Highscores page on service.runescape.com. EDIT - At some point I also made 300 mithril grapples.
Subbed back when I saw J1mmy's prop hunt videos but this one truly tickled my spreadsheet-addicted monkey brain and sold me on your content. good video ty
I don’t find agility boring. 1-85 agility went relatively quick in comparison to other monotonous skills like slayer. The entire game is essentially running laps. You just do the same things over and over again no matter what you choose to do. Edit: 8:47 Also, I have used the grapple shortcut here, specifically in DMM. A lot actually.
Is the spreadsheet available online? There's a reproducibility crisis in science at the moment, and content creators making bold claims like "agility is bad" without showing the raw data is not helping that issue.
RS3 already made little stash boxes for all the grapple shortcuts, and I still don't ever use them. There is a grapple shortcut south of Lumbridge people hated so much that they put in a bridge right next to it.
That water obelisk grapple was useful for bank trips from that part of Taverley dungeon before the GE came out and made teleport tabs easy to get in bulk - you'd grapple from the island to Catherby, bank there, then grapple over to Taverley to get back to the dungeon. Took fewer inventory slots up than teleporting to falador, and was cheaper than the runes too, and didn't take much longer to be back in the dungeon.
They should make a cool like 2-5m item (in terms of drop rate and market stabilization, i'm saying it should probably equate to about being worth that much), that is not necessary but is more like the pharaoh's scepter in being a sort of 'luxury' item that provides convenience. It can be obtained through a mini game, maybe even the future sailing skill if it passes, and is an equippable item, for fashion scape or something, but it's a 2 in 1 item that you charge with mithril grapples, up to 100 or something, and saves two slots and equipping. I think that would be pretty neat
Pretty sure anyone who played back before 2007 knew Agility increased Run regen. It was in the patch notes, and I'm pretty sure it was on Sal's Realm guide.
I'm surprised you didnt' mention the shortcuts in the Fremennik slayer dungeon, those are really useful for saving time and run energy. And the ones in the Revenant caves can let you escape from PKers
70 for Blue Dragons and Sara GWD is the last point I saw training agility being useful. It's also around the same level where you get full graceful. Im higher than 70 now because I train agility while at work sometimes. But 70 was always my only real goal.
So increase animation speed across the board as they are all painfully slow, leave grapples in places you've used them, remove diary requirements as the Agility requirements are bad enough. I'd also like to see more shortcuts in areas where they'd be useful on a more frequent basis like training spots or dungeons rather than areas you might only go through once or twice in your entire playthrough.
Most agility shortcut are useful if you're psychotic enough to spend 1k experience per 1 tile you're allowed to walk :o PS: Blink twice if this is video a call for help. I won't do anything with that, but at least I'll know.
This was a good watch. The point of the faldor grapple shortcut was to mine coal at barb village and you wont have much run energy with a full inventory of coal so you grapple to fally bank to save energy
Way back in the day of Runescape 2 I used to use Arandar pass. I hated going through the elven forest because of the wire traps, and it wasn't really that much worse to run from Ardy through Arandar if you were going to the Iowerth camp area, since you could pick up 6 red spiders eggs along the way. Funny story, I was playing Leagues a couple days ago and ran into someone in Arandar. They called me scum because I was camping the red spider eggs spawn because basically nobody knows this area exists anymore. We had a laugh and they hopped on.
So in Runescape 3 you can do insane tricks at the Prif agility course, only requiring like 75 agility to access. Meanwhile you need like 96 agility to cross a low wall into Port Phasmatys, a wall that a toddler could cross

I have never seen the vine into Kharazi Jungle from Shilo. I thought "Omg, almost 20yrs of chopping those trees". Then I looked at the date it was added in-game, 2015. Only 8 wasted years. Fun, I love RS 🤣
My favorite part about this video is that the achievement diary requirements have been removed from *most* of them, except one on karamja that just needs easy dairies and, of course, the infamous KQ one that only exists to make people suffer through doing the elites and either never using it again since they killed enough KQ or just fill the KQ collection log to justify their suffering.
I auto-played to this while playing Diablo 4 beta and was only half listening, and I thought for a moment that I had ended up on a J1mmy video. That's not a burn, btw, love J1mmy and you seem to make similarly digestible content. Good video. *also, how dare you poop in my pants!
Don't forget the shortcut to Alchemical Hydra. It requires 88 agility but you wont save any time you just avoid taking minimal damage from one of the regular hydras.
Speaking of the karamja diary and the kq lair shortcut. Can we also point out how bad the big amethyst mining room is? You need 92 mining to mine them anyway. Which takes a really long time because mining is also a really sucky skill. but in order to use the big room you need the falador elite diary as well? Like why?
I really like the mith grapple shortcut at the southern end of white wolf mountain. During Tree runs I usually do my last fruit tree at Catherby, and then I can just grapple over the mountain to the normal tree patch in Taverly
The cosmic rune shortcut was buffed uesrs back. It used to be significantly slower to use either of the two than it was to run sround. The main benefit achieved from it was saving run energy.
First item: Grapple shortcuts would be useful if they were two-way instead of one-way. Secondly: I think we just need USEFUL agility shortcuts, especially for places that seem like should be even normally traversable (compare to steepness of karambwanji fishing spot is still traversable), for example if you teleport to ghorrock and go through the wildy gate, you have to run ALL THE WAY AROUND this tiny slope to reach the agility arena. Like... just give us a shortcut to slide down/climb up that hill. Third item: Saying things like 60 agility is 'low' or reasonable is not a good take in my opinion. For example, by the time most accounts hit 60+ agility to do the river salve shortcut, you'll have teleports into canifis anyway. I'd say 40-50 agility is the HIGHEST I would consider "low level agility". Fourth item: The only thing I can think of about having a shortcut between bloodveld/nechs (ioworth dung) is to potentially lose aggro from nechryal superior, but yeah that's crazy lol Fifth item: I wholeheartedly agree that no shortcuts should be diary-restricted.
Quick point, even if they only save a little bit of time, during the shortcut you are regenerating run energy instead of using it. This does provide some extra worth. I can’t defend the ones that take longer.

@@cortaeali8838 it takes time for energy to replenish. How much time are you wasting "walking", or just standing still? waiting for energy.
the brimhaven stones is a shortcut, the other way is cut vines, up stairs, run past fire giants, run past demons, down stairs
Or unlock and use the southern entrance
It'd be cool if tbe animations got faster as you leveled as it improved run energy
The karuulm dungeon shortcut and the skeletal wyverns shortcut are the worst offenders.
Just a thought- diaries should lower the shortcuts within the area by a certain amount of levels. If you completed the Falador elite diary and it lowered the agility req of the shortcuts by an amount, that would feel like a good change rather than having shortcuts hard locked between diaries.
That's pretty clever!
Hey Idyl, do you think you could share that spreadsheet with us for data on the rest of the shortcuts?
Honestly I've low-key been thinking agility needs a revamp for the exact reasons you stated with taverly dungeon
New-ish to bursting nechryaels, but aren't death spawns just good for bursting xp?
What are death spawns

Now to calculate how many times you'd have to use an agility shortcut to make it worth training.
70 is requirement for priff sooo.. get at least that!
for sure. this skill is one of the best examples of this game not respecting your time lmao
i’d much rather take a raid shadow legends ad over an AI “art” one
Yeah I think it’s important that AI art is ethically sourced. I very much doubt that app is doing that lol
@@peterjurasek9297 i’m not sure i understand how that would even be possible, would you mind elaborating how it could be?
@Mr Spaghetti Ethically sourced could be if an AI art program was exclusively made with artwork submitted by artists themselves instead of stolen.
Buuuuuut the fact that it doesn't exist yet proves that they don't care about artists, and that artists don't want their work used.
cry about it, u suck at art
Tbh he's plugging the shit he likes. I would say if you want raid, do Raid on your own vids bro. If he's into his ai phone app let him plug lol
I remember when agility was added. I trained it a lot because I thought it was kinda fun.
Then came the rune crafting craze with the abyss and I was already geared for rune running.
idyl has been preparing for this speech for at least a year in total in the old good twitch days
Dude I grinder 72 agility for that one at the herb patch in the troll area just to get boned by diary I was so excited to use that patch that when I tried to climb the rock got rejected never went back
The diary should let you teleport up there directly, but the shortcut should be available just from agility
It requires 73 agility and the quest making friends w my arm
oh I see, it was changed.
When I was a kid I thought combat levels made you slightly taller in game
I used to think the grapple mechanic was one of the coolest as a kid. I remember using that Falador wall grapple, and Catherby island grapple many times. It just goes to show you how much less we cared about efficiency back then haha.
grapples staying in place is such a good idea
For example armadyl entrance, it would save inv space
Man, you're quickly becoming my favourite content creator, editing on point, interesting information and funny jokes, hope to see more content soon!
Wait a second.. This isn't J1mmy. Had me fooled for 17 minutes.
I think they polled the kalphite lair shortcut a while back to be a hard diary req but it failed. This was also when it was the 75% threshold

They need to get rid of all diary requirements for shortcuts. What other skill has diary requirements for one of the skills main functions and purpose?!
It'd be like, if you were required to complete the Kourend Elite diary to cut redwood trees at all.

Idyl coming through with the lunchtime video. Thanks bro.
Life changing video. I've been going through the observatory dungeon to get up there for medium clues on my UIM. How have I never known that the rope STAYS THERE???
You worked really hard on this & since osrs is supposed to basically be a democracy with changes, this spreadsheet should definitely be looked at by Jagex
Even though Jagex changed the Karamja shortcut to Duradel from Elite to Medium, it still requires the Hard diaries to teleport to the gem mines which is the only reason you would run into this shortcut lol
In defence to the Wintertodt shortcut, it's decent for getting some agility xp in inbetween rounds :P
Also it's useful for solo kills, saves a lot of time when you have to subdue the boss
Is that you J1mmy?
The Al Kharid ones are so unbelievably ridiculous. The palace one is probably going to be one of the first few you see in the game, one that's disproportionately more useful the earlier you could get access to it because you do so many early quests in that area, and then you can't use it for a ridiculous amount of time AND the reqs are too high AND it requires a diary. It's easily one of the most tilting things I can think about this game, and this game is full of those.
That subtle jebrim callout LOL
I did that grapple in catherby when I was a kid and remember being so underwhelmed. I've never gone back to that area since.
I just got 99 agility this week, I can definitely say it breaks people.
1-Mine sandstone
2-Grind sandstone
3-Bank buckets of sand
4-Grow giant seaweed
5-Collect giant seaweed
6-burn giant seaweed
7-Combine buckets of sand and soda ash to make molten glass
8-Blow molten glass into unpowered orbs
9-Starting from catherby bank, go east and use the grapple shortcut to get to taverly.
15-Use grapple shortcut to go back to catherby bank,
16-Bank, collect more materials for another run.

Probably the worst take ever tbh
@@K.G444 Should change your take then because mine is immaculate.
Wut? You can't grapple from the shore to the obelisk. It's one way
@@Baldilocs Theres two grapple spots, one to get off the island one to get over the mountain to Taverly.
Was interested in the topic, don’t respect an ai sponsor.
Pretty sure anyone who played back before 2007 knew Agility increased Run regen. It was in the patch notes, and I'm pretty sure it was on Sal's Realm guide.
Please don't take sponsors from AI art programmes... 🥶
Most agility shortcut are useful if you're psychotic enough to spend 1k experience per 1 tile you're allowed to walk :o
PS: Blink twice if this is video a call for help. I won't do anything with that, but at least I'll know.
This was a good watch. The point of the faldor grapple shortcut was to mine coal at barb village and you wont have much run energy with a full inventory of coal so you grapple to fally bank to save energy
I am convinced that Idyl is J1mmy's slightly smarter brother.
I think the only shortcut I use with any type of regularity is the Edgeville to GE tunnel

The quest recommendation for the observatory is to use the grapple because of how useful it is and the fact that it stays. Absolutely goated.
Very amusing video and very well produced but
Imagine how many artists are going to remain struggling & stressed about their lives and money because a bunch of people saw your ad for a.i 'art'.
I have never seen the vine into Kharazi Jungle from Shilo. I thought "Omg, almost 20yrs of chopping those trees". Then I looked at the date it was added in-game, 2015. Only 8 wasted years. Fun, I love RS 🤣
The observatory shortcut was added because people on reddit kept asking for it specifically for the clue step
Pretty sure Arandar is a required area for a clue scroll step. If not then I'm mistaking it for RS3, that is.
Hey @Idyl_ can you post the google sheets that you refence in the video? Curious to see it. Thanks!
Fourth item: The only thing I can think of about having a shortcut between bloodveld/nechs (ioworth dung) is to potentially lose aggro from nechryal superior, but yeah that's crazy lol
Fifth item: I wholeheartedly agree that no shortcuts should be diary-restricted.
Quick point, even if they only save a little bit of time, during the shortcut you are regenerating run energy instead of using it. This does provide some extra worth. I can’t defend the ones that take longer.
I have 99 agility on 2 accounts and punch dogs with my bare hands in taverley dungeon on the reg while frothing at the mouth
Why do I feel like this video single handedly was the reason for all the shortcut changes in tonights update.
