Well, i am really surprised that you flew to the States, just to get a small CNC made copy of your lost part, don't you think you could get it from a company in the UK ? I know for a fact that there are hundreds of Classic Car specialists in England, each of them specialized in a sector of restoration.
Well done to all the suppliers that did top work on those parts. Special shout out to Frank for that radiator rebuild. If I didn't see it, I wouldn't have believed it possible. I hope Ferrari pay you a record breaking amount for this project and put it in their museum.
Any metal parts you want to protect from corrosion, wrap them in heavily waxed paper too like every old hardware shop used to do. The radiators and fans look stunning !
Where possible, a thin coating of oil will help just as tools are shipped, or wipe down with ACF-50 a favourite for many all weather bikers to prevent rust and corrosion, it even removes surface rust.
I assume that you'll drill a couple of drainage holes into that bracket below the radiator to ensure the rad no longer gets to sit in a pool of water and rust to bits again!! And protect them aswell.
An utterly brilliant update! This project is as spectacular as it is riveting. As always, your commitment and dedication in getting every minute detail correct is awesome and truly inspiring. This channel absolutely rocks, and your BBi videos are my favourite on RUclips. Please keep up the fantastic work, and thank you for such excellent entertainment!
Really enjoying seeing the BBI. come together Scott. Went enlarging an existing hole in a rotating part I use a Step Drill Bit as it is more likely to remain centerd.
Try Hampshire Electroplating in Southampton regarding your calipers, they've been around for a very long time and may be able to help or direct you to a company that can. I was taking motorbike bits to them 40 years ago and they're still going strong.
With regard to yellow Zinc plating. Marshall (in Bletchley) Guitar Amplifier Chassis’s are yellow Zinc plated. Might be worth chatting to them about if they do that in house or have a local supplier do it.
It has to be possible to zinc plate with yellow passivation , Brake callipers to this day are being plated that way at the suppliers factories, BUT back in the day hexavalent Chrome was used for that passivation, that's now banned as very carcinogenic. The modern process uses safer trivalent chrome for the passivation and you won't get quite the same shade as back in the day. But you need a plater who knows how to plate cast iron ( spheroidal graphite cast iron in this case).
When you’re completely done with the BBI… please bring it over to the US and tour the country with it (even if that means using a transport). Would be so cool to see at Amelia Island to Monterrey and everywhere in between.
For the brake calipers, I recommend treating with OSPHO chemical treatment following rust removal. It treats the metal to prevent rust formation and forms a surface that primer and paint can adhere to.
You should find out what parts most Ferrari models use that can no longer be purchased from Ferrari and have Tampa Vapor Blast reproduce them in mass and you be the world wide retailer.
Theres plenty of companies do it, in germany theres pogea racing and id say they are one of if not the worlds best in that regard. Absolute insane detail to work

These passivations are listed from least durable to most durable Zinc with Clear/blue passivation Zinc with Black passivation Zinc with Yellow dichromate passivation Zinc with OLIVE passivation.
Give Mike Brewer a shout ? There was a platers he's used more than once, and featured on the Wheeler Dealers Dolomite Sprint episode - cant remember their name though. They may be able to help with the zinc plating, or able to recommend someone else if he can't do it . Worth a try

Hi Scott, the caliper halves are Nodular Cast Iron (Also called Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron), not steel. It is the same material that any caliper housing or master cylinder body is made from (unless its aluminium!!). So, there are a number of platers out there who do the yellow zinc passivate for companies that make brake master cylinders and calipers. There is a company called PastParts in Bury St Edmunds who specialise in restoring brake components and claim to be able to get the correct Zinc finish, they could be worth a call. Do be careful with your seal groove in the caliper body, as these have been plated once you need to make sure all plating is removed before new plating is added. If the seal groove becomes smaller by more than a few microns then the seal may have too much compression and the piston might drag. Normally when caliper bodies are produced, the raw casting is zinc plated and then it is machined, meaning that the machined surfaces are not plated. Look for people experienced in brake restoration, not general zinc platers.
i vapour blast and polish for a living, you cannot vapour blast parts with bearings and moving components unless you strip the part completely. Same with intake manifolds.. after blasting they have to be cleaned inside and out, no abrasive can be left behind..
I've been told that such parts need to be boiled in water to remove any fine abrasives that get trapped in pores after blasting (when the part has critical moving surfaces involved.)
The blades on MG fan could easily be machined down on a lathe by making up a mounting plate to hold it and then the ends of the blades will be machined to the correct diameter accurately.
Great stuff seeing problems/ finding solutions. Shame no one in the F1 belt near Oxford or Aerospace industry could help with the machining! Still like the way you've made your fully kitted out workshop look like a conservatory & kitchen! Thanks for content! 🙏🙏
Rata after doing the zinc coating you should clean with distilled water thoroughly then when you dip the yellow/gold chromate dip for no more than 20 to 30 seconds it should not matter what steel is used if the process is done correctly it should stick i would try another plater as people do things the same BUT different technique cheers from down under
Still need plating 1st other wise areas that musn't be painted will corrode ( including inside) and as soon as you get a chip the powder coat will blister off , has to be Epoxy not polyester - Iron brake callipers with painted finishes that many modern cars have are all zinc plated 1st and then primed and epoxy painted.

OK, so these are actually just ATE calipers. Try PMB Performance in the states - they know all about these style of calipers and how to refurbish them.
Im in the states so I got quite a few hits when goggling yellow zinc platting so there are definitely people out there to do it. But it doesn't hold up well on brake calipers. I had gotten some replacement calipers for my daily at one point with the yellow zinc finish and it didn't last long. And while searching its a common issue. So even though its the correct finish on something that is never going to be driven hard I feel getting them powder coated as close to the original color as possible would be your best bet.
