He's singularly as prolific a songwriter of amazing hits as the whole of The Eagles. The Eagles had an unending string of hits, like Townsend/The Who did, but it took the bunch of them to accomplish it.... One reason I like this song is that Pete makes reference to "Hiwattt Amps", which I've been using exclusively for 38 years now.
      Long live #Hiwatt!!

By "hate" they probably mean they're sick of hear "Who Are You" and "Won't Get Fooled Again". I love the Who and I'm sick of hearing those songs.
I didn't rate the Who growing up just because the radio only played a few Who songs, Who Are you, Fooled Again and Baba O'Reilly...and they were played over and over and over again. Those are great songs but after you've heard them 10 million times they kind of lose their impact.
I didn't "get" the Who until I heard some of their live stuff. Their recordings can't touch their live performances from their prime.
They're one of those rare bands who really were better live and the were done and dusted when I was kid. They got back together about the time I was in high school but of course Moon was long gone and Pete was playing Fenders and accoustics and they had all those backing musicians with them. Just not the same thing so I never bothered seeing them live in their second run.

    • @rudolphguarnacci197
      @rudolphguarnacci197 4 года назад +9

I don't think he messed up. I think the line that he was supposed to sing has quite difficult syntax and phrasing. It's easier (and funnier) to sing about the guy taking his pants off. This is possibly confirmed when pete begins to sing the incorrect line and turns to the right to look at the band as if to tip them off that he's making a slight variation to the lyrics. And as he repeats the line (now being sung in its correct place) he starts to laugh. After the line is sung this second time the camera cuts to Keith and he's looking at Pete and laughing as well. What a great band, man, what a great band.
(Do you think the guy who took his pants off may have been Pete?)
Edit: naa, he messed up. That's why he turned and laughed the lyrics, cracking Moonie up.

Maybe you can answer me this question: I consider Quadrophenia to be a great album. But in South Florida, at that time, Elton John's album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was played repeatedly---more than Quadrophenia. In fact, it was not until 1979 with the release of the movie Quadrophenia did I hear the entire album. Why was Elton's album more popular than the Who's Quadrophenia?

I’m glad they made this appearance so this song has them playing and has a visual to go with it! Keith Moon makes me laugh he’s laughing here and the Ox is a steady rhythm section!
We didn’t get to see this in the US. Damn it! We had no Satellite service or anything at the time. I missed all the Grey Whistle shows and Top of the Pops. Now I get to some of it 25 years later when most of these groups are gone now. Still I’m glad to finally see these shows! Thanks to RUclips!

One of my faves. Saw them live this same year-Thanksgiving weekend (Fri) LA Forum. Got off work at the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas at 2:40pm, rolled into a rainy LA and the Forum with the Who on stage playing 'The Real Me' , which as any knowledgeable Who fan will tell you begins with the sound of rain and thunder segue of "I Am The Sea", which we all got a kick out of as we had just come in from the rain outside. Magical experience.

The consumet primal rock and roll singer Mr Roger Daltrey. He's a singer not a fighter but he is not that bad as a fighter so watch it. Lol This don't mean much but probably one of the toughest singers ever. WHO is tougher hmmmm I know the Rock. He sings I guess. No one else's giving him a fight. Not even Ginger Baker would be fair. No drunken John Bonham. Any way it's stupid to talk about but I like stirring up stupid stuff all in the name of fun. ROGER hands down lol

Excellent, mimed, live or however you want to believe it. It's The Who showing how full of energy they were back then and still are today. Love how John slid down the bass neck from one note to another, Keith showing off in places and of course Pete stuffing up the lyrics and Roger just out there doing what he does. Pity, it's like half mimed, half live, though the sounds live and different from the album release sound. The Who ROCK!!!

I absolutely love The Who ...in many ways during their prime they were the greatest rock band on earth 1967-75 or so.
Moons playing deteriorated towards the late 70’s. He was still great but again during his prime before all the drugs and booze ate him up, he was untouchable.
After Moons death for me it was over. Face Dances and It’s Hard we’re mediocre albums at best with maybe 3-4 good songs.
Tommy on broadway was great, it brought them back into the public eye. Then with Johns death in 2002 they really should have quit.
But they still tour and I still love them. Looking back, I kind of respect Led Zep for retiring after Bonhams death.
You could never replace Bonham, and The Who tried with Kenny Jones but it wasn’t the same. Moon was the heart of The Who , Pete it’s brains, John it’s foundation and Roger it’s spirit.
    Just my opinion

Down at the Astoria the scene was changing
Bingo and rock were pushing out x-rating
We were the first band to vomit at the bar
And find the distance to the stage too far
Meanwhile it's getting late at ten o'clock
    Rock is dead they say
    Long live rock
Long live rock! I need it every night
Long live rock! Come on and join the line
Long live rock! Be it dead or alive
People walk in sideways pretending that they're leaving
We put on our makeup and work out all the lead-ins
Jack is in the alley selling tickets made in Hong Kong
Promoter's in the pay box wondering where the band's gone
Back in the pub the governor stops the clock
    Rock is dead they say
    Long live rock
Long live rock! I need it every night
Long live rock! Come on and join the line
Long live rock! Be it dead or alive
Landslide, rocks are falling, falling down upon our very heads
We tried but you were yawning, look again
    Rock is dead
    Rock is dead
    Rock is dead
The place is really jumping to the high watt amps
'Til a twenty inch cymbal fell and cut the lamps
In the blackout they danced right into the aisle
And as the doors fly open even the promoter smiles
Someone takes his pants off and the rafters knock
    Rock is dead they say
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock, long live rock
    Long live rock
    Long live rock
    Long live rock
    Long live rock
    Long live rock
Long live rock! I need it every night
Long live rock! Come on and join the line
Long live rock! Be it dead or alive
