The original was released in 1975 with his band. Maybe in general look for the earliest performances of a song for an appreciation of its original impact. This is more like a nostalgic trip for those already familiar with the artist/song.
I quite like this version as well, stripped back and it feels like it suits him now: an old man looking back on his youth. But I say that as someone who listened to the original version with all the power and energy that had, 40+ years ago when I was a teen, and I felt I really was Born to Run, rather than walking with a stick like I do now!
Oh please watch the original video! It’s a powerhouse and you’ll see what a performer Bruce is! You’ll be blown away! It’s so different than this solitary and solemn-ish performance!
Brit, you’re on to something. The song seems to be about the disenfranchised, the disenchanted, the downhearted. The disillusionment with the American dream. Yet, it seems, in the end, the song encourages one to find a way to move forward while keeping the faith that a better day is indeed out there. “And we’ll walk in the sun”
Don’t listen to the fools saying Bruce is a tired old rock star who can’t rock anymore. I saw him live 6 days ago and he played 3 hours of ass kicking rock including the full band born to run. I’ve been seeing him since 1984 and the first time he played the song this way was in 1988; when he was 38 and the song was 15 years old. He explained about the song before singing it slow as such, (Paraphrasing)“ when I wrote this song I was 23 years old and I guess it was about a guy and a girl who wanted to run away from this dead end town and keep on running, which was a romantic idea I guess. But songs can change with time and I guess that couple were really running away to find something; a place to fit, to settle down and I guess they were searching for connection, because without a place to call home, and connection to other people the freedom to run isn’t worth much”. So Bruce was not an old man when he first sang it this was; he was a 38 year old reinterpreting the greatest song ever written to reflect where he was at that point in his life. Bruce is an artist and I agree, this song with the band is one of the greatest ever written. However, when taken in context this song is pretty great too, especially if your in your late 30s. I suggest listening to born to run from the album then relistening to this version from may 1988 at Madison square garden with intro. It’s easy to find on you tube. A great song can be played in more than one way!
Bruce is a trip.... Bob Dylan says about he in 1974 "stop this guy, because in next album he finishing all word's English ." Bruce write like a movie. See the official video, the universe of Springsteen it's revealed. You is amazing, your's reaction's i'ts very intense. Excuse my language, I'm an Italian.
The original, with the whole "E Street Band" is the greatest rock anthem of all time. The "Born to Run" album is the very best rock disc of all time. I am a fan, but I am not exaggerating.
Guys , he didn't do this as an acoustic recently because he's older, an acoustic version of this song was re-done and performed as far back as 1985. Like a good few of his earlier songs it is about a young man who knows he needs to leave the town he's from and go to where there is a chance of a better life. I once listened to an interview with him and he explained that his albums up to and including "Tunnel of Love" could be viewed as being about the same guy. Not autobiographical necessarily although there's no doubt that the album Tunnel of Love was definitely about his life. But songs like Thunder Road, 4th July from Asbury Park and Born to Run are all about a guy wanting to leave and take his girl with him. Bruce has done acoustic versions of a lot of his songs , the best is Born in the USA and it brings home its powerful message so much better than the original. The original Born to Run is sensational of course but there's an acoustic version of Born to Run on a Mini Album (EP for those as old as me) I have from the 80's along with Chimes of Freedom and Born in The USA. So it's not a new concept, remember also this is an appearence on a TV show. He couldn't really do the normal version with the E-Steet Band etc!
Interesting version you have chosen here. I like it but I’d also like you to hear the “full wall of sound” version. This was originally of a much higher tempo and volume.
At karaoke last night I realized that you needed more Steve Miller Band in your life. Specifically, The Joker and the equally great but lesser listened to Space Cowboy, as well as the majority of the rest of their catalog. Possibly Blues Brothers, Blues Traveler, and most Definitely Jim Croce (Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Time in a Bottle, and Operator)
This song was dialed back to acoustic for Jon Stewart , but this is the state Anthem of New Jersey where both Bruce and Jon were borna and raised. Lyrically it one of the most brilliant rock and roll bangers ever written and is the official Anthem of New Jersey where both Bruce and Jon were born and raised. Lyrically it one of the most brilliant rock and roll bangers ever written. The song is really about the chasm between the lives we want and the lives we typically lead. It is really about current desperation and undying hope that we can escape where we are to some greater place. It is staple for Springsteen fans and a theme he comes back to again and again. In a concert setting Bruce is backed by a 19 member band known as E Street. and Born to run is a completely different vibe. Try live versions of Land of Hopes and, Dreams; Jungleland, Thunder Road and The Promised Land
Yes! This is one of my favorite songs ever from my favorite artist. Bruce Springsteen is amazing, especially his live performances, check out a live performance of JungleLand, if you want to see some incredible saxophone.
Saw Bruce and the band on the Chicken Scratch tour in 1976 in Halsey Field House on the Yard at the US Naval Academy. They played the full band rendition of Born to Run, complete with the late great Clarence Clemons..
Wrong version of this to react to . Better to see the original period release when Bruce was a young guy as this song is all about the youthful desire to escape !!
I don't know about this being the wrong version, but I'm with you in thinking the version with the E Street Band was one of the most exciting and emotional songs I've ever heard. I was obsessed with it as a teenager, and I think Britt really needs to hear it. Here's a link, Britt: ruclips.net/video/IxuThNgl3YA/видео.html
Please listen to the original. I’m 62 years old and it’s my “life song”. The line about walking in the sun is tattooed on my arm. Make an old woman happy and listen to either the original recording or there’s a good live version on RUclips.
THis is a low-key version of his rocker. I'd never normally say react to a song you've already reacted to but search for "Born to Run (Offical Video)" and see it for the iconic song it is.
This is beautiful no doubt especially if you’ve already experienced and understand the story line. That said, if you are listening for the first time you almost have to listen to the studio version followed by the live version 1985 in Giants Stadium in Jersey. Need to listen to that FIRST to appreciate this!
I enjoyed this acoustic version of a rock and roll classic. He pulled it off. That said, I don’t think this song at this pace would have become nearly as popular as the original rocker did had this been the only (or original) version. To be clear, I enjoyed the song and your comments on it.
This is a stripped back version, and the tempo is slower; But I really like it. The original is a lot faster paced and it's really upbeat. I think you'd like it. Here's a live performance "Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Born To Run (Live In Barcelona)" and if you'd rather listen to a different song, then here's *"Dancing in the Dark (88 live) Bruce Springsteen"*
A recurring theme in Springsteen's songs is escaping the urban jungle for freedom. This is so different than the original. I don't think Bruce can push his voice hard enough anymore to replicate the original.
Please don't go further down this rabbit hole. Bruce drives me absolutely crazy. He is always behind or in front of the beat. I know its intentional but it's almost like he's too good for the the groove. My opinion isn't a popular one but I stand by it.
The original is so much better than the acoustic version. This was a rock song. Loud and fast with The E Street Band backing him. I would recommend the old (70s) live version of Rosalita as well.
It's a song about underpaid working people trapped in their town or neighborhood dreaming about escaping from their boring dead end life that they know they are trapped in . You can listen to it as a lamentful love song or a hopeful love song .But for me it always makes me feel sad and hopeful at the same time and I have been listening to that song for 48 years
Very different, laid back arrangement. Kind of his “unplugged version” so to speak. I like them both, but the original version does more capture the youthful drive and restlessness. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
I agree that this version is of an old song sung by an old man to old people. I like it but I much prefer the original version sung by a young rebellious man who was ready to take on the world with his songs and his band.
Sweetheart, you really, really, really, really, really, need to see the full band version of this song. Watch the official video. It is a completely different tune. Really.
To someone who has never heard this song (Britt for example), you don’t really get a feel for what this song really was like. This version is ok for fans who will appreciate Bruce’s reinterpretation in an intimate setting but you need to first listen to either the original studio version or any live rendition, because this song is a rocker but you just can’t tell it from this. It’s hard to even pull out the original melody from this.
This is an interesting version from the old man that Bruce is today, but you should really also watch the original version as it came out in 1975 (official video is probably the best bet) to hear the song as it hit most people the first time.
To get the meaning of the song you need to hear the original, which is now nearly 50 years old. He played this version at a tribute to Jon Stewart, which reciprocated a tribute Stewart paid to him at the Kennedy Centre, which is worth checking out.
For one thing - sod who's in the audience, they don't matter! For the second - listen to the original version wherever possible. This just doesn't convey the power of the song even though it's his own toned down version. Sometimes not always doing live versions aint a bad thing 😊
This is a neat version, but you should really hear the originals before seeing alternate versions. There's a few of this in her playlists, that I feel the people suggesting the songs should have pointed her in the right direction to the originals rather than variations or show versions.
This is a completely different song than the iconic, well produced album version with his E. Street Band. It looses everything rock and roll about it. I am a huge Bruce fan and have seen him live many many times. It is a 4 hour show where the audience is on their feet for 3 of those hours. At least. This is solo and sad.
OHHH....I've heard this before!! Biggie and Tupac wrote this!!! Because we know all ghetto-rat rappers are poetic geniuses!! Yes!! Maybe it was Li'l Wayne??
I it’s OK to be confused on the song. Bruce is trying to make something new of an old song. He’s a 60 year old man singing a song that he wrote when he was 20. It’s about the angst and uncertainty of the future when you’re a teenager living in a shit hole town.
The album version came with all the lyrics printed in the gatefold. You need to listen to the original the way all of the kids of this era, of the seventies, did which is sitting on the floor of your bedroom reading the lyrics along with the song playing. He conveys such an accurate feeling of what it is like growing up on the wrong side of the tracks in a New Jersey shore town where there is a sense of wanting and cars, romance and the Jersey shore atmosphere are a way of life for a certain breed of teenage kids. Springsteen is a Jersey Boy, a blue-collar troubadour & tune-smith. He gave a fantastic speech about modern song at the Rock Hall of Fame a few years ago. Being Bruce, he couldn't finish the talk without borrowing a guitar to make his point in that moment.
Acoustic version is OK. Glad you like it, but nothing compares to the live version (or even the original studio version). This just doesn't represent the original emotion of the song.
This is his masterpiece. But normally it's more frantic rock . You need to listen to a younger Bruce with his E Street Band which includes his wife. Iconic!!! This is unplugged slow slow tempo.
You need to hear the original version of this song. This is just a sad redo of an absolutely phenomenal song.
Sad?🤷🏼♂️ What?
The original video live would've been better maybe. 😉
@@bryanspringsteen761 Yeah, I agree. He turned it into "State Trooper", but it doesn't deliver the spirit of the song this way. It just sounds sad.
@@deepermind4884 I like it this way, too. But for someone who listens to it the first time I'd recommend the full band version,of course. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I often see her react to the lesser good versions of songs. Sometimes the original is better than live, and sometimes you need the right live version.
The original was released in 1975 with his band. Maybe in general look for the earliest performances of a song for an appreciation of its original impact. This is more like a nostalgic trip for those already familiar with the artist/song.
The official video needs to be seen as soon as possible.

Wonderful version of this great song!
Beautiful. Don’t slam Bruce’s decision to reinterpret his own masterpiece.

This is a totally different version of song. You need to see the E Street Band in action. The official video is a fantastic watch.
You defo need to do the live version main video from his account. Released about 1985.
Gotta do the official video. The iconic original version is uptempo full of energy. Full band.

I know what's coming and ur just at the beginning so we all love the greatest American rockstar ever
This is like an unplugged version. You need to find a live version from the 70's or 80's with his band to really get this classic!

It was Max Weinberg, he was on late night with Conan
And significantly, Max Weinberg is the long-time drummer for Springsteen's E Street band.

This is not the version to listen to. Born to Run was them doing the Spector "Wall of Sound" production style and the studio version is truly epic.

He was so smooth when younger, like "I'm On Fire". I'll always believe he ruined his voice on "We Are The World". The cause was worth it.
You really need to listen to the original album "rock anthem"! It was rocking and driving to the soul! Kind of loses something in translation here.
