@@understitchYT Well put. Perhaps the plan was just to launder. Not to assume. But I have never seen direct impact of the line in the “streets” however, the impact was felt (if that makes sense). They were successful for a time, at something.
Dao-Yi Chow (one of the creative directors in this video) got his start at Ecko Unlimited doing promotions. He was known as "Durwin" then. I met again him later when he was working at another company with a former Ecko Marketing coworker, and I called him "Durwin", and he got REALLY ANGRY with me, saying "Don't call me that, and that it was the name I had to use to make white people feel comfortable around me", which surprised me because he was one of the most well-liked & respected people at Ecko. I began seeing him as a model in magazines (sometimes with his son) & he wasn't fond of interacting with a lot of people who used to know him as "Durwin" (a name he told me himslef when i first met him).
I can understand why he did not want to be called that, it’s almost like dead naming someone I guess because he must’ve felt ashamed with how ashamed he was with his background, there was a lot of racism in the 90s, and it could not have been easy. I suppose using his name correctly today is a show of power, and I respect that
25:25 From a cultural perspective, “urban streetwear” brands like Sean John and the other celebrity and hip hop adjacent brands declined in popularity around that time. People weren’t wearing “outfits” anymore. Outfits meaning like jean suits and velour suits; those brands would have collections of various pieces that could be mixed and matched together. Streetwear in the 2010s gradually started leaning more skater and high fashion.
I think you could be right, but at the same time they did evolve their design with the times, it’s just that because it was hype-based they weren’t able to retain the interest when the hype died down even with a changing style
I never believed the figures associated with any of Diddy's companies. It never felt like a mainstream brand; I think it only really appealed to hip-hop fans. Even before the scandals, I always thought Diddy was getting his money elsewhere, and it had nothing to do with fashion or music!
@@understitchYT Thanks for the reply. Love your channel. Well done on all the fantastic docs. Sean John definitely made money but at the same time, he was known for stealing from his music artists etc. He's just always been dodgy.
I'm glad this video is very focus on analyzing the subject "Fashion" and the business behind it, not the controversy. It does go to show anything can sell as long as there's enough push by powerful people. The amount of industry support this man has just so people can be on his "party" list. Creativity is second to having the right mannequin in fashion and it's still true today.
Amazing as always! I’m glad you mentioned “Sean Jean Collection” because I also was confused about whether or not it was separate from the main line or a part of it with a creative name change. He actually did have a very short lived diffusion line called Bad Boy Athletics. It seemed to last a year, maybe less. It was sold briefly at Carson Pirie Scott & Co. stores under the Bon-Ton Stores Inc.
This is a good video. But to be fair, Macys is phasing out a lot of brands as the retailer is struggling with profitability. They no longer selling my favorite brand Karen Scott. And all of these phase outs began around Christmas 2023 because I always wondered why the inventory was so low that season. Now I know why.
They have been for a long time, its common for dept stores to phase out brands that arent profitable, even before times were hard. It was the timing of the announcement that was suspicious
The "urban/hip hop" market is fleeting. Any brand adopted by this group (aside from the heritage brands) has a hot 4 to 5 year run before they're dropped & considered "played out". THIS is precisely why spokespeople for certain brands have voiced their displeasure with this market having at times adopted their brands: they're tacky & fleeting, and could possibly drive away their core market base. It wasn't a "black" thing, it was a *THAT GROUP IN PARTICULAR* thing‼️🎯
And is this crowd looking for quality garments, or just something to parade around in for a couple of months? For the label, it’s probably a “get in, get out” situation.

I think its long been going that way, high fashion brands have for decades found inspiration in what the rich think of exotic and translate that through the designers lens.
