She’s a good example of spending her money and living her life while she’s here. We see celebs spending millions on other hobbies, hers just happened to be art. Good for her. I have more respect for the brand now that I know its from the heart.
I definitely have respect for the fact that she just went for it, she never minded that it made a loss, she just wanted her business to be her business
BS she scammed people and the public are paying for her debts lol WHY DO YOU THINK THINGS COST MORE like taxes and energy bills because of ifiots like these wasting it, her designs are awful. No one wears it.
Something i love about the brand is that Victoria actually loves it and it makes her happy. She's always wearing her own designs and makeup and does photoshoots and interviews promoting them. She's not like those other celebs and actually does the work behind and infront of the camera. Im very happy for her and that she gets to have her own career thats not with the spice girls or being married to david.
Yes i am so glad you did her! It’s fascinating that makeup and accessories always allow brands to pull themselves into profitability, the mark up for these products is insane. Furthermore, celebrity brands that manage to become respected in the upper echelons of society is so fascinating to me. The Row by the Olsen sisters is another example, a video on them would also be great.
The mark up for beauty is absolutely insane, shame we can't have that kind of a mark up in fashion to make it more viable. From low wages to inflation to ubiquity of fast fashion making it unrealistic, its not possible, but it would make such a difference to young designers who dont have the access that VB had. p.s. I might be editing a video on The Row right now
This is why I kept telling people that neither Victoria nor the Olsen twins's The Row had an easy road to success when it came to their brands. Plenty of people were saying the reason Rihanna's Fenty failed was because the public "wouldn't accept a black woman selling at luxury price point", but Victoria, Mary-kate and Ashley does it and they're successful. The reality is, no one was buying The Row and Victoria Beckham in the beginning. They were mocked for years for it's price point and for being a "celebrity brand" until they reached a turning point. But both stuck with it, likely losing their own money to bankroll the projects, while Rihanna had LVMH, which pulled the plug early for losing money.
I think youve hit the nail on the head with why fenty folded but the row and VB have ‘succeeded’. Its because both the row and VB for years and years have been loss making. A huge business like LVMH wouldnt continue a new brand with little social capital for as long as those individuals did, its simply not a well informed choice if looking at it only monetarily
I also immediately thought of The Row. It still surprises me that people have accepted their price point. Or that of V.B, for that mater. I do wish the Beckhams would up their philanthropy.
@@peterlangendorff9846 yeah I remember the first time I found out that The Row had amassed a cult following. I was so amazed and confused, I would check all the luxury online retailers and most of their stuff would sell out. Im happy for them though. I remember when they had only had “luxury white tees” and their infamous $45k croc backpack. They claimed it was selling out but even Purseblog didn’t believe it. I guess they weren’t lying after all. lol I’m also rooting for Victoria, she really loves fashion and she’s come so far. VB is honestly such a good brand, but Victoria needs to step away from the spot light like the Twins did if she wants to be taken seriously as a designer.
Fenty failed? According to whom? It is the most successful celebrity beauty brand and brought in $100 million in sales within the first 40 days of its launch. As of March of this year, is worth a conservative $2.8 billion. It's also not a luxury price point. It's mid range.
Incredible video! I remember studying fashion in 2011/2012, and our tutor told us to research a designer and do a project and I picked Victoria Beckham. I was told to re-pick as they believed she wasn’t a serious designer. I didn’t listen and still did her. Fast forward to now, I must email this video on! Major respect to Victoria Beckham and a big thanks to Understitch for making the video x
Watching the ad as a fashion industry outsider, I liked it. It's a playful twist on luxury and wealth. Its nothing too precious or pretentious, but clearly belonging to the upper class. It sells a lifestyle, which I think is what all marketing aspires to.
Yeah, pretty much, it introduces that aesthetic or that point of view to a faction of people that may not be into fashion. Potentially that’s why it’s done well
What i think is interesting in Victoria's brand story is how ultimately it's similar to a lot of brands. Having a long-lasting business in fashion is hard. You win, you loose but it's needed to establish a brand. She wanted credibility. I think her brand is credible. I buy the clothes. She makes beautiful clothes that i think, relatable to women who wants the HF experience at a decent price. I think now that the price point is more contemporary, it can grow and grow. I think that her offering on the website needs to align with what she is showing on the catwalk. Her clothes on stores and website are very direct. You understand it. On the catwalk, from season to season, it feels confused.
There, certainly a confusion about the brand, and I think that stems with the fact that they haven’t spent an enormous amount of time figuring out their unique perspective. Because the brand can be lichen into so many similar brands, it’s hard to know what you would go directly to them for and not to say helmet Lang. She makes great product, quality, that’s undeniable, but certainly a little bit more time could be spent on figuring out their unique value
Haha I love she had the reverse of a money grab but still made it work. Tbh I do think of her more as the fashion designer now than her career or just being Mrs Beckham & I think this minimalism era will be great for her
I really hope so, she has worked very hard for a long time. I mean theres literally no other celebrity design head that has put in the effort she has. I remember listening to those really early BoF interviews and just being so blown away by the knowledge she had and, frankly, that she was there in the first place. You compare that to other celebrities like the Olsens who rarely give interviews and when they do its nonspecific, or people like Rihanna who talk in quite general terms about their design, VB seemed to know her stuff and it is still impressive to hear her talk
Thank you for this video. Victoria Beckham has always been a WAG to me, she never stood out in her spice Girls days and her entry to fashion through Roc was a cash grab to me..(she was harmless, nothing to write home about!). A little rich girl with strong contacts, a rich hubby and deep pockets, she reigned Supreme as a Wag! Fast forward 2023, my brain has FINALLY has accepted her as a bonified player in fashion. I think because I knew too much about her beforehand, my brain refused to take her seriously. From a business perspective, this video gives me education and maximum respect for her for sticking it out. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to educate me on this ❤
Im so glad you enjoyed the video, I remember her WAG era and what my mum said to me about her "people forget that when she met David, she was significantly more famous" VB really made David because she introduced him to Simon fuller, who was managing him at that time. The way their money is attributed to David now was planned, but it had legs because it's an easier sell to the public than a strong woman who made her husband famous and in turn made him able to make the money he made
Damn, I'm hoping you do a deep dive into Pat Mcgrath labs on undersking because your point on scarcity marketing made me think of her very first drop with the skin fetish. Her team used a mix of celebrity marketing but still kept the high fashion/luxury aesthetic that she was known for but now her marketing has really become geared to the main public I think.
God I feel old. Guess being born in early 80s, I remember all the way from her in Spice girls to launching her brand. Feels like just yesterday. True to though she was never relatable. Thank you for another well researched topic
I LOVE her line, the past few years she’s really hitting the mark! To be fair, in her early years I that looonnggg zipper down the back was super recognizable to me to be a VB dress. Great video, I clicked so fast ☺️
Yeah i was wondering why they didn't mention the dresses with the long zipper. I remember back in the day seeing jlo and beyonce wearing them and i was like omg they're wearing victoria beckham lol
I disagree that her malleability is a liability, many brands don't have a fixed image, Gucci, LV, Dior, etc have all gone through so many designers, I would say VB brand has always been moderate classic minimalist, feminine, which I believe is actually the most profitable, as it appeals to the most people. Maybe the problem is, it just comes across as something other brands have as well, so she is not the first choice. Maybe she should really settle on something distinctive even if its only a few elements and make that her signature.
The brands you listed all have a fixed image, it's just that image changes with each head designer. You can think of exactly what each CD has as their image when you hear their name, with VB its a little more tricky because her vision is a bit less distinct, thats what I meant by that. If you weren't to look up a look and instead imagine what a VB look looks like, thats tricky without exactly that same look also being possible from several other designers. In that sense the branding is not good because its not well defined and distinct. The clothing sells, sure, but theres more factors that go into it than having great branding. I agree that she needs a signature style, it'll be something to build off of to have that branded look that will offer them longevity
I think there’s a huge gap in the market for people who work for living but love fashion. I loved the Peter Do BR colab. Great pieces with interesting styling. Same for Rabanne for H&M. That cheaper line had a through line for their main line. Prices in the mid low 100’s mean a working girl can flex on a budget. Micheal Kors has a nice niche here but I actually like VB’s designs better.
This was a wonderful video and well explained! You clearly have a lot of knowledge and I learn a lot from video's like this, which I really appreciate. About Victoria Beckham, her (or Davids) money was definitely her saving grace, but the fact that she was willing to learn and adapt made her fashionbrand happen. She must have great leadership in her brand, but I am sure that she is someone who is able to reflect on herself and is someone who wants to learn and grow and I appreciate that.
Luke Meagher on his Haute LeMode channel said it best….” Victoria Beckham makes Zara clothes in expensive fabrics”… I have bought VB from a heavily discounted rack and like my pieces. It’s basic clothes. Sort of Banana Republic at a higher price point. I also have several of the Target pieces that I still wear. Please do a rise/fall or flashback episode of…Richard Tyler, Pamela Dennis, Todd Oldham and Escala. Yes I’m telling my age but these folks were huge when I was in my teens. And profiles of Willie Smith, CalvinKlien under Calvin and Fransico Costa, Donna Karen, and Issac Mizrahi would be wonderful too. Most people don’t know how foundational these 80’s-90’s designers were to American fashion. 🎉🥰 PS I know RT isn’t American but his clothing was huge here.
I so desperately wanted to do videos on every single one of these people, especially Isaac Mizrahi, the way that his business fell was crazy. But I think that a lot of people coming into fashion today don’t realise the impact that these designers had with what is popular today, especially people like Calvin Klein, he’s now much more known for his underwear than anything else, and Todd Oldham seems to be more known now by who walked in his catwalk, and his actual clothes. It was a different time financially for these people, but it made for some really interesting businesses that are just truly different to things we see today, it’s nice for a business not to have started with T-shirts.
I barely use make up but I love her satin kajal liners, highlighter balm and the white eyeliner. Highly recommend but preferably wait for sales because it can be pricey.
I’m obsessed with your videos!! Thank you for another great one ❤ It was so fascinating hearing about Victoria Beckham’s slow rise and you nailed it on her design style!! I remember years ago when I worked in a department store her pieces -while beautifully made - were quite basic and conventional and rarely sold. I did love a few pieces from her Victoria x Victoria Beckham line although they have not lasted well over time 😭
I think thats right, theyre so well made but theyre often extremely basic. Though interestingly if they ever come up on resale theyre usually well worn in a way you can tell it really became a staple for someone
I found your channel today and I enjoy it a lot. 💘 I have a strong interest in fashion and business/marketing, but no serious background. Your content is educational, trustworthy (because you present your sources and it appears so well researched. Or you simply have a lot of insight.) and just enjoyable. Please, keep it up 👌🏻
Thanks again for your great informative documantaries. I do have some feedback though. A large part of the video contains repetitive scenes (like the odd hide and seek video campaign) which was on a loop for lots of minutes. Very (in my opinion) uneasy to look at. I think your videos could be amazing if you use video clips that match the narration more, if you use less repetitive clips, and if you avoid low quality/resolution clips :)
Thank you for your feedback, I also don't like repeating images like that, but I was discussing it as the first collection for a good while, thats why it was on the screen
If I was a woman, I would LOVE to wear her clothes. I think her designs for her fashion lines throughout the years stay very true to the kind of style she herself has gravitates to. I've always loved her minimalist style and I think she deserves her place NOT as your typical 'famous person who gets into fashion as a shameless cash grab." I also just LOVE her personality, her witty and wry humour, etc. She's more than just Posh Spice, she's a fashion icon who lives and breathes fashion.
i give vb (the person) respect for turning down the cash grab spice girls reunion opportunity as so to not damage her name credibility in the fashion industry. for me, that was a smart move. thing is, a lot of the fashion girlies who would be her target demographic weren’t around for the spice girl era, so they wouldn’t have any real prejudices because of it. that the brand doesn’t have a defining dna, pov, or house codes may be because vb isn’t an actual designer… and it seems as though the collection are based on her personal style evolution. i’m rooting for her success though as i feel like she has a genuine interest in and respect for the fashion industry.
When everyone used to make fun of her because of the money loss and discredit her as a designer, I had high hopes that she would see success. I've always had a soft spot for VB so I'm glad she persevered and her brand is making profit.
What I like about VB is that she is creating something usable and beautiful. Like Versace she makes cloths that can be worn and that have style. Fashion doesn't need to reflect a design houses standard, but needs to change and cloth people. One of the major mistakes is that fashion has been worshiped for its stagnation of concept and not praised for its ability to clothe people. Fashion can be art but not necessarily all the time or for confused. purposes. VB is on the right track and is exciting and forward looking.
Hello 😊 Your analyse are always on point 😯 Do you have a marketing or communication background, ? As a business college student, I find very interesting how you are able explain why something did work or not !
Thank you so much! I studied retail marketing yes and then I went through a whole bunch of roles in the industry (nothing special) before life took me in another direction. I always read about it from a very very young age, its been a life long obsession so even though Im not in the industry now I keep up religiously
I have never related to her fashion, beauty or style. She has the right people around her and very clever in business for an average looking woman, with nothing amazing in terms of talent. Not being rude her, she is a great networker and has the right associations, but there is just more stylish, talented and beautiful people out there
as always, so well researched and a fascinating insight ........to be honest I have never been in doubt of her commitment and her genuine ambition to produce beautiful, quality garments and to be received as a credible business ...I have always found her very open and honest ..... thanks again for your quality journalism.........may I make a suggestion for the future .....Gareth Pugh......I have always thought of him as super talented I know he is still designing and I have seen some of his work for the theatre .....I always thought he would be a super fit for a French house
Being a big fan of the person and the brand, this vídeo is great. I fo love the first commercials, I remember watching and loving it. Thank you for the video 🎉
Thank you so much for this. I am now binging your channel - hit that subscribe button. V informative and wow - well researched. On a personal note: a friend of mine worked on designs for her around 10 years ago and found the whole experience very positive. Firstly,- she was very nice and well liked; secondly, much more knowledgeable than he was expecting; thirdly, very willing to learn. She’s proven a lot of people wrong.
I heard she was nice actually. I could be wrong but when I was a kid there was a rumour that she and david owned a stately home not too far from where my parents live and I have memories of people telling me they were nice, though I think either that was untrue or they moved out before I was old enough to understand (the house is a hotel now actually and it's gorgeous, but I probably shouldn't give the address)
@@understitchYT AH! The infamously titled "Beckingham Palace" as the tabloids called it! Easily identifiable if anyone googles the above phrase. Will say it's in a lovely part of Essex
these deep dives are fascinating to listen to! the fashion world is so difficult to do well in and shows how much more work goes into a simple top or bottom. cant wait to see what your next video!!!
I respect VB brand for not giving their garments to celebrities for free, I think it made the path to success harder, but it made the brand look more self-assured.
It certainly looked less cash grabby, though really that idea of sending product to friends didnt popularise until later (at least not publicly, its been long done more surreptitiously)
I don't think that they lost money. They used the losses against his profits to pay less taxes. Basically, if I understand it correctly based on articles, even though I'm no expert or truly understand it - instead of paying taxes they financed her brand.
This looks like a good example of someone with middling designer talent (I agree her looks aren't exactly groundbreaking) and a good enough sense of the business to survive. Most brands would never be able to last 15 years without turning a profit, and who knows...if money was more a concern perhaps it would have gone in different directions.
Oh, if money was more of a concern, or even a factor, this would’ve gone downhill very fast, could you afford to lose 80 million? 😭😭 and to be fair, if she wasn’t a celebrity, I do not think that anybody would be racing to fund the line from its design 🤷
The thing is, I don't recall those early designs being her personal style. I'm not a fan, so maybe I missed it, but what I remember was super low rise jeans, belly shirts, pink track suits, over-sized breast implants, and a spikey suburban mom haircut. These were the kinds of things she wore on her reality show. I didn't understand what she was doing showing at NYFW. Then I read an article about the show. Apparently, people were in the audience giggling and expecting it to be terrible until they saw the clothes. So I think the attendees had the same opinion I did. I'm still not convinced the visions are hers because I can't let go of her and David's matching acid washed denim outfiits.
She was known for that hair and boobs before her america take over yeah, and a lot of people thought she was tacky then, but still it was the fashion at the time so it wasnt like katie price tacky and she rebranded well to the long bob and skintight dresses before the launch. Youre right that noone expected the brand to go well and in fairness the first collection was bad (as I say in the video) and thats because it wasnt really from her, she had a design team, inc roland mouret, and they did the work while she guided. It wasnt good and Id bet they were laughing becUse jt was so unspecial
@@understitchYT So you think that even though up until a short period before the 2008 show where she was wearing over the top outfits that the clothes got better when she took the reigns? I did some googling to see how different her style was, and oh my!It was wilder than I remembered. It's about as hard for me to believe as the Olsens designing for The Row when they had been seen all over NYC looking escapees from a Grateful Dead compound only a few months before.
@@Eff_It Neithe VB nor the olsens took the reigns of the design for their businesses, they both had head designers, though both were very secretive about their team. I just finished a video on the row (its early access on patreon now but will be here in the next couple weeks) and it's really surprising how much of that is marketing. Both brands remind me of that song 'Wonderful' from Wicked in which the guy talks about how everything is based solely on whichever label is able to persist "A man's called a traitor or liberator A rich man's a thief or philanthropist Is one a crusader or ruthless invader? It's all in which label is able to persist There are precious few at ease With moral ambiguities So we act as though they don't exist"
Another great and well researched episode, well done. Every weekend I wait with anticipation for another deep dive into the fashion universe and who will get to be this week’s protagonist. 🎉
I just can’t get that clip out of my head when she’s like ‘I grew up middle class or whatever’ and David pops in and is like ‘what car did your dad drive to school ?’ … ‘a Bentley’ Yea Vicky don’t have to pretend to be relatable you’re making a brand that is like a female Tom ford. Just tell people you grew up rich.
Yes I believe it was taken in house, originally it was Estee Lauder Victoria Beckham Cosmetics as a licensed product, but in 2019 it was taken in house. May have to check the date, but Im sure thats right 🤌
I have such a soft spot for her. I got her book, That Extra Half An Inch, when it first came out. I loved her self-deprecating and realistic wit in terms of things like motherhood.
i get that she wasn't in it for the money and i admire her for sticking with the project even when it turned out not be profitable but i can't help but think how dumb everyone on her team is because losing 100 million dollars is insane? i feel that a better management team could have done it so the brand wouldn't be losing money every year and still let her explore as a creative/business woman
I think if they couldve done it without making a loss they 100% would have. Its a lot of money, but I guess they were just willing to lose it. There has never been rumours that she was trying to give up in the face of losses
....i was a stylist for Target when her line came for it..she thought that referencing the 60s would hit...and it did not...i myself just bought a few of the scarves...which i will eventually dig up and give to my high spirited stylish niece...i never saw the big deal about ...V...especially when there is Stella McCartney....however your video did a fine job explaining her success...i also saw how the serious fashion press kept pushing her especially the British people in fashion...V and her husband make the British look good so they championed them...and will always do so...
@@understitchYT .......Anna is FAR from alone in this...nothing against V.B.....her dresses are very cute and i really wish more ladies would wear them....however i have always noticed the fashion community does not show that same love to Stella...who's work is just as good if not better...i have always wondered is it because of her pedigree from her father...or is everyone bedazzled by the BECKHAM SWAG...and the serious British fashion press is swayed by it.....
In Anna's biography they specifically mention VB's help from Anna, but really few brands have come up in the last few decades without her or people around her's help. Think Galliano with Andre Leon Talley and even McQueen with Diana Vreeland who connected him to Hamish Bowles. I have never heard of someone championing Stella like that. I wonder how she did it really, I really enjoy the brand so I was very happy the year they turned a profit, which I think was maybe 5 years after founding, something like that
@@understitchYT ....Stella co chaired a Met Gala one year with Anna ...but other than her occasionally dressing someone for the Gala....like the exquisite white gown she made for RIHANNA one year...Stella does not get any real focus or appreciation from Anna or anyone else and it's quite sad that people who seem to be so passionate about fashion fail to recognize her...
Look Victoria Beckham is obvi a global icon and I am not. But tbh her style has always been kinda “trashy” “chavvy” sorry I’m an American dk if I’m using that Exaclty correctly. Victoria and David are good at wearing the fashion and I’m sure know something but I think they are heavily curated especially in there rise. I don’t think of Victoria Beckham as Luxury I think of her as Rich ya know. There is a difference.
100% agree. She changed her accent, got rid of her tatoos, her plastic breasts and rebranded herself. She would be classy to a particular person - a chav maybe. VB came from a relatively wealthy family - but I still associate her as an essex girl with essex wealth type values. I cant take the brand seriously. In fairness, I do think some of her designs are nice - but i would not respect myself if i wore VB. If i want to be pretentious and aspirational and impress others, Hermes, chanal, etc would be a better brand for my image. Im more into qaulity and avoid brands and "luxury". Its a marketing gimmick.
I wouldn't say she was chavvy, I'd put that more to Lady Sovereign or N-Dubs, but my mum also thought she was plastic-y back in those days, but also at the time, that was what she wanted to present as, and it became aspirational. This was back when everyone wanted fake boobs ofc, and trends change, but yes, she was always rich-aspirational not luxury-aspirational and perhaps thats exactly why it was such a hard sell to the fashion world, esp when the designs were very unoriginal at first
Pretty sure 'Spice Up Your Life' was just a marketing tagline for the VB x Target collab. I had several pieces from that collaboration and it was always pretty clear it was Victoria Beckham the brand (slash woman, a bit) for target, the tags had the victoria beckham logo with 'for target', etc.
@@understitchYT a bit, but Target advertising (and this was especially true of this period) can often be centred around a song, like the whole campaign messaging etc, so I think, at least for Americans at the time, it didn’t really feel out of step with the target side of the branding. The collection itself didn’t point to any spice girls references, so I think it was maybe just a reminder to middle America of who she was 🤷♀️
I think Victoria Beckham's Brand should team up with Margeila because of the Galliano association, i ❤️ John Galliano. However I would be happy to see Victoria Beckham take on any struggling or saleable aspects of her Brand and collaborate with two men, Sebastien Jondeau, and her husband David Beckham. With two male personalities like that, Victoria Beckham and her Brand could rule fashion and cosmetics even more than they are currently. Also, very sad to see apparently David Beckham's Brand House 99 seeming to cease, I can't purchase anymore in Australia. i still firmly believe the Beckham fragrance line is outstanding and i would be devastated if it ceased also. But only my humble thoughts, i know nothing of fashion or branding until i began watching understitch, so my opinions are uneducated... But because of your channel I have purchased and am currently reading 'The World According to Karl', Karl is a Legend to me, perhaps a bit blunt at times, but so gifted and intelligent.Thankyou for another great video and educating me yet again YT, you are a pleasure to listen to regularly on RUclips 🎉 ❤
I really want to do a video on my beauty channel about house 99, because it's such an interesting look into the very quick rise and fall of cosmetics specifically geared towards straight men, really the only brand from that era that is still around now is man labs, and even that's not that common. I'm so glad you liked my Lagerfeld video, I'm literally editing the next life and death now
@@understitchYT Lab Series for men is still popular here in Australia, but for price and quality House 99 was more easily accessed and did not have the very high price point Lab Series has always commanded I would hope a good beard oil or moisturiser released with Beckham association may possibly have Marula, Shea or Jojoba, as a more natural and desired ingredient to spotlight on labelling, with the current attitudes preferring more natural and vegan approaches. although mink oil, fatty alcahols and silicones still are prefered by some who grew up in the 80's and 90's 😃 but do not sound glamorous or clean and natural as is current trends. Ive found male grooming can be heavily fragranced ( many will introduce sandalwood oil, very common but I personally dislike it, just me though). I'm sure I've read many years back, Victoria Beckham does or did enjoy Dermalogica skincare products, and with all things balanced i do think Jane Warwands Dermalogica Skincare and International Dermal Institue she and her husband created in late 80's have well made, high quality products and treatments, but at a higher price point, slthouhht not unreasonable for quality of ingredients and packaging used. Could a partnership with Dermalogica, or if mass market and efficency needed, L'ORÉAL or Unilever, be an option? As I think Mr Beckham was onto a really good idea and is highly admired/trusted in the personal care industry, making the potential fall of House 99 so quickly, confusing? Could it be introduced as David Beckham's Maison 99, everything sounds better in French they say 😃 i say this becuase i was unaware at first of House 99 being associated with the Beckhams, and possibly fragrance used could be thoes already very popular in Mr Beckhams own successful line of fragrance, i habe bought many personally. But this is my humble and uneducated opinions only. I wish both of them every success in all of their business ventures. Thankyou for the reply, I enjoy Underskin very much, the recent Drunk Elephant and St Ives episodes were well spoken, written and researched, as always 😃 and I say that respectfully of course 🙏 i enjoyed them very much and hope to see many more in future, and i hope your channels continue to grow and thrive 💙 best wishes and thankyou again 😀
I took my daughters to see The Dpice Girls in concert in the late 90's. It was the worst concert I had ever seen and we left early. Victoria shines in the world of fashion much more so than she did as a performer. I own some of her dresses and enjoy them, though I have not bought her line in some years. Fashion is a tough and impossible business.
"We don't need more crap". Ouch 😂 You went straight for their neck. But I also agree that everyone and their dog is making a brand of clothes/cosmetics and the quality is shady very often.
I think VICTORIA BECKHAM the brand should start announce thier the "brand ambassadors" to more gain consumers and a "custom-made" red carpet looks (gowns, dresses & menswear etc).. and a menswear
Kind of, The Row debuted SS07, VB in SS09, but Im currently researching for a video on The Row now and VB beat them to respect by miles, I'm actually quite surprised by what I found tbh
I couldn't say rise and rise because it wasn't and certinaly after finally turning a profit, theres no way its in a fall now. She earnt the rise in the title 100%
I really enjoy your business analysis breakdowns as I am into fashion and business myself. Have you got any plans to look at Ed Hardy and would you ever consider business analysis of non fashion brands? I think you may like the channel 'Modern MBA' if you haven't already come across it.
I definitely want to do Ed Hardy, their documentary was amazing, I do cover non-fashion brands in the beauty space on my beauty channel, and to be honest, I have so many other interests that I would love to do more, but it’s about time, I’m already making three videos a month minimum two for here and one for underskin, so I just don’t have time for another channel, even if I would love to have it (I even have names picked out in case one day I can get help 🥰)
Victoria Beckham never studied fashion design & I'm sure she has no idea on how to use a sewing machine. She is a conceptual designer with great Branding marketing skills. Her fashion firm on verge of bankruptcy was saved by her rich n successful husband.
Anyone can make clothing. If you have money it’s easier. If you have fame it’s easier. Victoria Beckham is proof and that you need not concern yourself with training, talent, or innovation in the field.
@@understitchYT It’s no coincidence to me that what you describe as ‘brands’ in fashion that ride off of a celebrity name association, also lack the other aspects that I mentioned. For the most part they market ‘bland’ at inflated price points and IMO they fail on based on that equation as much as the fading over time of their celebrity.
She doesn't "have" money or fame. She earned money and fame. Isn't that a basic thing: earn capital so you can buy resources that invested earn more capital?
" that one would go through to make something they love and believe in work, despite everyone (including the man who owned 33% of the company) telling her she should stop." She has the money and does what she loves! She is cool. Fashion world sucks and is super phony. So who cares. Good for her.
@@understitchYT Thanks for replying. Interesting point. I always thought the prices were for to her ego, wanting to not be seen as less than let's say Tom Ford.
@@Lommy9999 its still on the lower end for designer clothing actually, so it makes me think that a significant amount of thought went into the price point. I'd love to sit down and talk to whoever it was that decided it to find out more
that weird reebok colab That just fizzled away literally almost immediately It doesn’t make sense to me she’s not known for sports ware if you could call it that, it doesn’t fit reebok either it’s very odd. It’s like floating in limbo as this thing that’s there lol Her business model is interesting “I wanted to just do business” respect for going for it
I love Victoria. Cant help it. She was my favorite Spice Girl and i guess thats an excellent way to build a relationship with your audience if your fan base started as children (i was 10 when they debuted) I would say Victoria positioned herself as the rich auntie that would let you play in her closet and she'd give you fashion tips along the way. I have her style book and it was basic style 101 tips but the tone was very friendly big sister and not gate keeping. With every style venture she's started, she stays consistent with the "im a girls girl" and "im here to let you know my secrets" Most celebrites who usually just become ambassadors, dont really do this. Victoria grew with her audience since she's never strayed away from that stragety and mesage with her branding. Aside from the financial ups and downs, she's a celebrity that has one of the most successful & consistent brands. I would say the same about Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez. And i mean that in a sense of being able to package and market the ESSENCE of that celebrity. Its not easy to do.
In 2024, she is way too uptight, very old lady with outdated fashion senses. I'm not surprised DIL of hers, Nicola peltz declined the VB brands. She is going to ruin modern and chic young women vibes with her super outdated and meh brand
I feel bad for other designers going bankrupt and having to stop their brand. But also dont hate the player hate the game and imo she worked for that money lol after 4 kids and everything david has put her through its the least she deserves and its not making him less poor 🤣
@@starveartistThere is no ‘after’ Spice girls money. She had far more than David when they met, far more than she could ever make a dent in whatever she did - and the royalties just kept coming….
With respect, calling what VB has produced ‘art’ is a stretch.
@@giant_joewhat do you call art, Joe?
BS she scammed people and the public are paying for her debts lol WHY DO YOU THINK THINGS COST MORE like taxes and energy bills because of ifiots like these wasting it, her designs are awful. No one wears it.
This is nowhere near Art!
The clothes are awful and I've never seen anyone wearing anything from any of her collections!
Yes, its an incredibly genuine brand even if its not the most original
Yes i am so glad you did her! It’s fascinating that makeup and accessories always allow brands to pull themselves into profitability, the mark up for these products is insane. Furthermore, celebrity brands that manage to become respected in the upper echelons of society is so fascinating to me. The Row by the Olsen sisters is another example, a video on them would also be great.
The mark up for beauty is absolutely insane, shame we can't have that kind of a mark up in fashion to make it more viable. From low wages to inflation to ubiquity of fast fashion making it unrealistic, its not possible, but it would make such a difference to young designers who dont have the access that VB had.
p.s. I might be editing a video on The Row right now
@@understitchYT I can't wait thank you!!
VB is honestly such a good brand, but Victoria needs to step away from the spot light like the Twins did if she wants to be taken seriously as a designer.
oh this is a spot on analysis!
What was your project about?

I really really want to do a video on her brand and Id also like to do her life story on underskin, one day too, she is such an icon
God I feel old. Guess being born in early 80s, I remember all the way from her in Spice girls to launching her brand. Feels like just yesterday. True to though she was never relatable. Thank you for another well researched topic

@@Tomes23 well I admire you as 80s were legendary. For me it was 90s when I was growing up

The long zipper down the back also wasn’t hers, that was popularised before by herve leger i believe
@@understitchYT oh wow didn’t know that, that’s why I’m subscribed 😉
I can think of no better way to spend your money than chasing your dreams.
What a poetic way to put it 🥰
That belongs on a Coffee mug or T shirt!
I would imagine its her money, she was more famous than David when they met so she just had longer to accumulate wealth
@@understitchYT That is a good point! I have no idea honestly, I just know they have money 😉
Such a great video! I love your work, would you mind doing a video analyzing The Row's trajectory?
Im editing it now 🥰
Luke Meagher on his Haute LeMode channel said it best….” Victoria Beckham makes Zara clothes in expensive fabrics”… I have bought VB from a heavily discounted rack and like my pieces.
🎉🥰
PS I know RT isn’t American but his clothing was huge here.
I remember buying a Willie Smith blazer in the 80's that I LOVED!
Issac Mizrahi sold his name and then went down hill.
This is CRAZY timing bc I've been obsessed with her the past few weeks. The clothing, the solo album, the tv show. Love ha
I havent seen the tv show yet actually, is it good?
I barely use make up but I love her satin kajal liners, highlighter balm and the white eyeliner. Highly recommend but preferably wait for sales because it can be pricey.
I really need to do a video on her cosmetics

Some of the coats suit men quite well too tbh. Theyre more of a boxy fit, so as long as you dont have rugby shoulders you should give them a try 🥰
i give vb (the person) respect for turning down the cash grab spice girls reunion opportunity as so to not damage her name credibility in the fashion industry. for me, that was a smart move. thing is, a lot of the fashion girlies who would be her target demographic weren’t around for the spice girl era, so they wouldn’t have any real prejudices because of it. that the brand doesn’t have a defining dna, pov, or house codes may be because vb isn’t an actual designer… and it seems as though the collection are based on her personal style evolution. i’m rooting for her success though as i feel like she has a genuine interest in and respect for the fashion industry.
Amazing!! Plz do Olivier Rousting next❤❤
He doesnt have a brand! I will definitely do his life story, but because he’s still going I dont want to be rude and make it sound like he died 😭
What an interesting case. As usual a brilliant analysis with excellent insights from you ... and thanks for the plug
Im glad you liked it, but I cant see who you are to know who I plugged 😅 youre welcome nonetheless 🤍
Hello 😊
Your analyse are always on point 😯 Do you have a marketing or communication background,
? As a business college student, I find very interesting how you are able explain why something did work or not !
Thank you so much! I studied retail marketing yes and then I went through a whole bunch of roles in the industry (nothing special) before life took me in another direction. I always read about it from a very very young age, its been a life long obsession so even though Im not in the industry now I keep up religiously
I have never related to her fashion, beauty or style. She has the right people around her and very clever in business for an average looking woman, with nothing amazing in terms of talent. Not being rude her, she is a great networker and has the right associations, but there is just more stylish, talented and beautiful people out there
She has talents, are they in design? Probably not, but theres far more to fashion than design

And the point about the brand being bigger than the celebrity (an incredible feat) makes it nearly impossible for her to rejoin the spice girls.
There is a part of me that always thinks the brand would have been more successful if she named it something else rather than her own name.
I agree, actually
I wholeheartedly agree !
I feel a 100k coming soon! 😊
Just 22,000 to go 💀💀
I respect VB brand for not giving their garments to celebrities for free, I think it made the path to success harder, but it made the brand look more self-assured.
It certainly looked less cash grabby, though really that idea of sending product to friends didnt popularise until later (at least not publicly, its been long done more surreptitiously)
Hopefully she’s paying her business invoices now. I worked for her supplier and she owed thousands.
I don't think that they lost money. They used the losses against his profits to pay less taxes. Basically, if I understand it correctly based on articles, even though I'm no expert or truly understand it - instead of paying taxes they financed her brand.
I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue and Victoria Beckham was a brand available to purchase. It was not popular, along with Marc Jacobs.
I think a good amount of her sales come from Asia as she said, every time I’m there, I’m surprised by how regularly her brand is stocked
Both brands remind me of that song 'Wonderful' from Wicked in which the guy talks about how everything is based solely on whichever label is able to persist "A man's called a traitor or liberator
A rich man's a thief or philanthropist
Is one a crusader or ruthless invader?
It's all in which label is able to persist
There are precious few at ease
With moral ambiguities
So we act as though they don't exist"

i get that she wasn't in it for the money and i admire her for sticking with the project even when it turned out not be profitable
but i can't help but think how dumb everyone on her team is because losing 100 million dollars is insane?
i feel that a better management team could have done it so the brand wouldn't be losing money every year and still let her explore as a creative/business woman
I think if they couldve done it without making a loss they 100% would have. Its a lot of money, but I guess they were just willing to lose it. There has never been rumours that she was trying to give up in the face of losses

I like Victoria Beckham. I hope she succeeds. Regarding Victoria Beckham beauty, I think she needs to take a leaf out of Trinny Woodall’s book x
I used to love trinny and susannah back in the day 🥰
I'm a guy but I loved her collection from the get go. She had such a sharp vision whether it was relevant for me or not.
Yeah she relly does. I often find myself pulling things in consignment or vintage shops and being impressed when I see the label
Please do a video on the Row by the Olsen Twins. Thank you!
I literally just uploaded it to Patreon, it’ll be on RUclips soon ❤️
This was back when everyone wanted fake boobs ofc, and trends change, but yes, she was always rich-aspirational not luxury-aspirational and perhaps thats exactly why it was such a hard sell to the fashion world, esp when the designs were very unoriginal at first
I would loooovee a video about VB cosmetics!!
I really want to do one, the packaging for the brand is interesting to me and I want to look into it more
Pretty sure 'Spice Up Your Life' was just a marketing tagline for the VB x Target collab. I had several pieces from that collaboration and it was always pretty clear it was Victoria Beckham the brand (slash woman, a bit) for target, the tags had the victoria beckham logo with 'for target', etc.
still rather odd though, dont you think?
@@understitchYT a bit, but Target advertising (and this was especially true of this period) can often be centred around a song, like the whole campaign messaging etc, so I think, at least for Americans at the time, it didn’t really feel out of step with the target side of the branding. The collection itself didn’t point to any spice girls references, so I think it was maybe just a reminder to middle America of who she was 🤷♀️
another amazing vid
thank you so much!
What a great video
Tysm 🙌
IM REQUESTING POLENE AND YSL VIDEOS PLEASE!! ❤
What?? Why was it so bad?
nice one! we should go for coffee!
Thank you 🥰
"We don't need more crap".
Ouch 😂 You went straight for their neck.
But I also agree that everyone and their dog is making a brand of clothes/cosmetics and the quality is shady very often.
Who would say that about Khy? Who? Why? When??
I think VICTORIA BECKHAM the brand should start announce thier the "brand ambassadors" to more gain consumers and a "custom-made" red carpet looks (gowns, dresses & menswear etc).. and a menswear
Often those ateliers are loss-making, perhaps thats why they havent gone that route yet
You say that it hadn't been done before that a celebrity made an upscale fashion brand but didn't the Row precede VB's rise to respect?
Kind of, The Row debuted SS07, VB in SS09, but Im currently researching for a video on The Row now and VB beat them to respect by miles, I'm actually quite surprised by what I found tbh
oh thank you -- cannot WAIT for that vid! @@understitchYT
The fascinator she wore to Prince William's wedding still a winner to me to this day.
it was steven jones I believe
@@understitchYTno I believe her hat was by Philip Treacy.
Ha ha love the title!
Hahah I thought my dyslexia was acting up
I couldn't say rise and rise because it wasn't and certinaly after finally turning a profit, theres no way its in a fall now.
I love the green dress that Kendall Jenner wore
I wouldn't have picked it for her, but I think thats exactly why I liked it
❤❤❤my wish video came true
🧞♂️
Victoria Beckham never studied fashion design & I'm sure she has no idea on how to use a sewing machine. She is a conceptual designer with great Branding marketing skills. Her fashion firm on verge of bankruptcy was saved by her rich n successful husband.
Again in response to the end narration, excitement in fashion is in the eye of the wearer not the jaded need of the observer.
Anyone can make clothing. If you have money it’s easier. If you have fame it’s easier. Victoria Beckham is proof and that you need not concern yourself with training, talent, or innovation in the field.
Id wager fame makes it harder for the brand to really stick, but I get what you mean
What I wouldnt give for that kind of money tho
I thought VB did a collaboration at Target in the US? If I remembered, the collection was a hit.
In 2017! Yeah, I think I say it in the video actully (but very briefly)
I have one of her Target dress!
I think a video about Balenciaga would be very interesting. I’ll leave it there.
I have one! Its pre-scandal but it holds up 🥰
Who really designs the clothes?
She has a design team and it does change
I honestly think her brand would have been constantly profitable had her prices were more fair.
But then it wouldve seemed more like merch and less like a serious fashion offering
I'd love to sit down and talk to whoever it was that decided it to find out more
@@understitchYT Thanks, you made me think about it differently. Thanks for replying
When I was younger thought she was Victoria secrets😂😂😂
Awwww she’s a cute secret
that weird reebok colab That just fizzled away literally almost immediately
It doesn’t make sense to me she’s not known for sports ware if you could call it that, it doesn’t fit reebok either it’s very odd. It’s like floating in limbo as this thing that’s there lol
Her business model is interesting “I wanted to just do business” respect for going for it
Can you please make a video of Betsy johnson
I would love to
That is wear the split between fashion and art can be tweesed out.
It’s more of a tax dodge than a fashion label.
You think? Imo the structure of the company would be more complicated if it was
@sararichardson737 100% . Folks is so gullible 😂
@@understitchYTwhy are you making all these videos if you don’t understand business?!
Very proud of her
I love Victoria.
Nonetheless, I found her so boring. Everything she does.
She has a very specific type of humour, very dry
In 2024, she is way too uptight, very old lady with outdated fashion senses.
I'm not surprised DIL of hers, Nicola peltz declined the VB brands. She is going to ruin modern and chic young women vibes with her super outdated and meh brand
Didn’t The Row do just this. A celebrity brand that people initially scoffed at but is now considered a fashion staple
My video on the row is coming, its on Patreon now
She really incorporates her Posh Spice persona to create her own label
"Willingness to not give up" = rich husband who keeps funding, most designers don't have this luxury
Do you not think its reductive to say its his money? She was far more famous and rich when they met
@@understitchYT look at the years in discussion...long after Spice Girls money, and peak David Beckham earning years.
