Unless you will need to walk over the whole layout, this seams to be way over built for a model train lay out. What I have used in the past and I have seen used lately are 1 X 3s or 1 X 4s or combinations of each. And with some extra bracing I believe you could build walkways into the layout where needed.
Great project and brilliant sue of space underneath.
Not to mention great attention to detail to ensure a "do it once " sort of job.

Great craftsmanship- I predrilled all my framing too and didn't encounter any cracking wood. 21x12 double dog-bone

Looks like you built a boat dock
Well I did build boat docks working my way thru college down in Boca RATON Florida.!!!
