I model HO but I have considered switching to N due to the ability to fit more trains in the same space. The only thing keeping me in HO scale is the greater variety of locomotives and rolling stock. I have several locomotives and cars that are not available in N. I might do a second layout in N though someday.
Small layouts are fantastic! I once modeled a 1x1 meter (that's 3x3 feet) layout with my son with just a circle of track. Man, the fun we had with that. Bridges, mountains, a tunnel, selfmade trees, a herd of sheep, fishermen in the creek, it was great. Small layouts make you focus on detail, and that's where the fun is for me.
Hello! I agree with you 100%…you can have a lot of fun in a small space. I recall being a kid with a 4x8 layout- and that seemed like an entire little world to me. Smaller layouts are good exercises in being creative and using your imagination!
I seen that G-Scale layout last February 25th, 2023 in Bentonville, Arkansas at The 20th Annual Great NWA Train Show. I was very impressed as well at the detail involved with various scenes.
I stay at the Super 8 By Wyndham in West Plains every year when I attend the yearly Losh/Worley Family Reunion in Willow Springs. Over the 4th of July Weekend. Some of the family live in Springfield
Hi there! Thanks for watching. West Plains is a nice little town. And, it’s neat to know there are a lot of modelers there- enough for a nice club! -Mike
Hi there! Yes, using prototypical speeds is a good idea for an operations-based layout. I know at a lot of these shows, many feel a need to speed things up for kids so things are more captivating and exciting. It can be a conundrum balancing realism with today’s attention spans! Ha.
Hi, Randall! You bet! I’ve received quite a few comments from viewers about how cool they think it is. It’s nice to see how much you can pack into a smaller space!
I’m relatively new to actual model railroading (I’ve always stuck to setting things up on a table or floor and running trains) but my first railroad is tiny by the standards of these “small” railroads My first (and only) railroad is a 2’x5’ On30 setup, using flex track to achieve ~10” radius curves. Three switches for a simple shunt yard and siding, enough to keep things simple in a properly tiny area to learn the ins and outs of modeling. I’m having a blast so far and probably going to come back to your channel for ideas on what to do with it once I’m out of the track laying phase 100%. Keep up the good content, it all looks very professional and well done
Hi, there! I appreciate you watching! It sounds like you’ve got a nice little setup going on. I worked with small shelf type layouts for several years. I could never do much more than run a short train back and forth, but it allowed me to learn a lot before biting a bigger chunk, so to speak. Like you mentioned- having a blast is what’s important! Thanks again for joining us here on the channel! -Mike
Hi there! I appreciate you watching. I always enjoy seeing O and G scale layouts and trains, but my space keeps me set in HO. I’d love to have a second, G setup outside one of these days.
Those Athern Genisus locos are awesome, we sell a lot of them at the Model RR shop I work at, they run smooth as silk and the DCC with sound, they sound amazing
Hello! I totally agree! They’ve done really well for me. I’m looking forward to Athearn releasing its Genesis MKT GP38-2s this winter. Those will look great in a consist with the 39-2s!
Hello! Thank you very much! It was a neat place to spend several years of my childhood. It has been fun bringing some of those memories back to life with the layout. I appreciate you watching!
That would be cool to have! I’ve always thought it would be neat to have a train around the tree. But, I’m sure my cat would enjoy it a little too much! Ha.
Hi, Michael! HO is by far the most popular scale with the greatest number of available accessories. I’d say N would be second. O has some good stuff available as well, but not nearly as many options as HO or N. I personally model in HO and have always been impressed with the availability of products. -Mike
I bought and still have a ton of N scale. I'm too old to see knuckler couplings that small and NOT happy Bachmann coupling do not connect to each other, brand new outa the box. SO here sits a a couple hundred $$$ of LED stuff and trains in boxes cuz I upgraded to HO.
Hello! I totally understand the issues with N scale! Over the years, I have thought many times about converting to N- just to have the ability to fit more in a space. But, I do good enough handling HO. I’d need a magnifying glass to work with N! -Mike
Hello! I normally use Woodland Scenics ground foam on my layout. There also some other brands mixed in there. I also plan on using Woodland Scenics static grass on my layout under construction right now.
Would you want to come to the Christmas display at the Harlin museum in west plains 405 Worcester st. Tursday and Fridays 2-6 pm. Saturday 12-6 pm. Sunday 12-5pm.
No doubt, So stupid running model trains at 300+ scale mph. And 90% of all them do it!. Whats the point of even making a layout.. If their going to do that they should have gotten into slot cars!. What a bunch of knuckle heads.
I have a question I have a HO scale layout and I have some inclin track from Bachmann and 22’ radius on turns I completed layout but now when I go to put power to the track it makes a chirping sounds what could that be and would I need a rerailer another one added in a different one since I have a rerailer already
@@MainTrack I’m using DCC and a DCC controller on Bachmann track it makes sound that a locomotive makes when it’s off the tracks and still in running position
Hello! I wasn't aware of the major price differences there. Is this because of shipping prices? I know I've looked on ebay at some items overseas, and the shipping is often twice the price of the item -Mike
@MainTrack I guess prices are all relative. Our $ is about 66c US. But Transport does make a difference. I live on the West Coast and a fair bit comes from the east which adds a bit. In 2006 it cost me $ 3000 to bring a car over. Today, gasoline floats around $ 2.10 litre. We have had big bands play in the east and refuse to come west due to cost. Medical GP $ 90 per visit but can claim $ 40 back if you have a Medicare card. Filling on a molar about $ 350 . But stock availability is a pain. Currently there is a housing shortage being made worse by bloody migrants. I should not complain considering I'm a migrant : (.
Hello! I believe the West Plain club layout is 4x8 (someone may correct me), and the G scale layout is 14x7. I’m not sure of the exact dimensions of the others.
Hello! Good question! I suppose that definition can vary person to person. I figured a big layout would be along the lines of the massive modular club setups, medium size being something you’d find in someone’s house. Compared to those, the layouts on the video would be small-ish. I appreciate you watching!
Hi, Dad! Thanks for watching and for sending your thoughts on the music. I ended up adding that since I’ve had others viewers mention it’s boring to have minutes upon minutes of silence or nothing but loud crowd noise from the show. I’ll see what other options I can try next time around! -Mike
Hi there. Yes, N scale has been around for awhile- as has HO. We weren’t meaning to portray it as something new or out of this world. We just wanted to show off some other people’s work to provide ideas and inspiration. We appreciate you watching!
Hi! You bet…it’s a cool layout and great bunch of fellow modelers! I’ll look forward to putting out the video I recently took during the holiday open house. I had a lot fun! -Mike
Many people would agree with you! But, I think setting up displays at shows can pose a conundrum. Slow speeds would of course be prototypical and the preference of most modelers. But, at a public event, you’ve got thousands of kids and guests with a very limited knowledge of the hobby- who would be extremely bored with a train creeping by very slowly. It’s a balance of capturing their attention while providing a basic introduction to the hobby. I tend to overlook high speeds on a display layout- as opposed to a layout designed for realistic operations…unless one is modeling a high speed bullet train route! Haha.
Question of the day: If you were to model in any other scale than what you currently do, which would you choose?
I model in HO, but if I had to change, it would be Proto:48.
I model HO and I've tried N, but it was just too small, so I guess I'd try O scale.
I model HO but I have considered switching to N due to the ability to fit more trains in the same space. The only thing keeping me in HO scale is the greater variety of locomotives and rolling stock. I have several locomotives and cars that are not available in N. I might do a second layout in N though someday.
G scale outdoor layout.
I like the MKT SD40-2S HO SCALE DCC SOUND!

I missed the Springfield show this year but I'll probably be at the Bentonville show, so I'll try to look you up and say howdy.
Hello! Sounds good...I'll look forward to seeing you then. The Bentonville show is always a lot of fun and I do my best to make it down each year.
I seen that G-Scale layout last February 25th, 2023 in Bentonville, Arkansas at The 20th Annual Great NWA Train Show. I was very impressed as well at the detail involved with various scenes.
I made it to that show, too! They had a good turnout. This G layout is always a big hit wherever the club sets up! -Mike
Fun little tour. You have a great voice for narration.

I really don't understand the slot car speeds some trains execute on such small layouts! Totally unrealistic.

Agreed. It's surprising how many people run trains fast. Wears them out quicker too.
I feel like whatever speed is fun for you is correct speed. I personally like slower trains.
My grandfather always wanted to see fast trains
Awesome video Mike, thanks for checking out the West Plains Model Railroad Club's layout! It's definitely a fun little layout to operate!

I like these kind of the layouts at Springfield, missouri ozarks model railroad association train show!

O guage two rail needs to make a comeback
I’ve seen some pretty cool O scale layouts. If I had more room to spare and wasn’t already heavily into HO, I might consider it!
It never went away !! There are thousands of 2 rail O layouts/clubs. Maybe you meant Scale (1:64) which is way way rarer than 2 rail O...
Good stuff, fun to watch! Thanks for sharing.

I thought these layouts were pretty cool, too. Thanks for watching! -Mike
There is an old man who brings his windup trains to the OMRA show every year and he is nicest guy ever you should really show his layout next year
That sounds pretty cool. I will have to check it out! -Mike
I will say o gauge christmas train set!
That would be cool to have! I’ve always thought it would be neat to have a train around the tree. But, I’m sure my cat would enjoy it a little too much! Ha.
I do miss my Ho scale RR I had 28'x16' with home made Helix
Hi! Sounds like you had a nice layout. That’s a perfect size for a personal home layout. Mine is currently 20x8x16.
I have two of those gp39-2 locos one is MKT the other is CSX. They’re great!
If one wanted to build a large, full room train set and landscape, which scale will one find the most accessories available to purchase???
Hi, Michael! HO is by far the most popular scale with the greatest number of available accessories. I’d say N would be second. How do you do your grass on your layout?
Hello! I normally use Woodland Scenics ground foam on my layout. There also some other brands mixed in there. I also plan on using Woodland Scenics static grass on my layout under construction right now.
Nice video! But it’s would have been much more informative if you would have included the sizes of the small layouts.
Hi, Bill! Thank you for watching. I appreciate the feedback and will be more diligent in including that information next time. -Mike
I wish that the trains were run slower.
Hi there! Some of the layouts had trains running slower. I think some of them were just running a little fast as a display for the crowds to see.

I agree! I've seen so many otherwise gorgeous layouts made to look toylike with trains that are running too fast.
Great site!
Hi, Elizabeth! I appreciate you watching! -Mike

Lionel was the slowest mph of the show? Baffled😅
Haha. That’s saying a lot since Lionel layouts usually run at full blast speed!

Hi there! Let’s see if we can help! Are you using DCC or a standard DC engine and power pack? And, what in particular is making the chirping sound?
@@MainTrack I’m using DCC and a DCC controller on Bachmann track it makes sound that a locomotive makes when it’s off the tracks and still in running position

Geeze, what are the sizes of the layouts?
Hi there! Thanks for watching. I believe the West Plains layout is 4x8 and the G Scale 9X13. I didn’t get the exact dimensions of the others.
Ho N Mark O Lion Mark Amc Flyer
