It was only when I was in a hospital bed, heart failed, needed a new one and a pacemaker that I received God's grace and said I'm done. That was 5yrs ago and not ONCE have I ever thought about coke, heroin, crack, or meth....the utter gratefulness I have for being alive, the ability to see my nephews grow up, and see my family every day are all reasons to never relapse. I know it's different for everyone, and each has their own experience, but for me, going back to that lifestyle will never happen.

I grew up in an emotionally and physically abusive home where often times I didn't know if being at home or if being away was safer. Sometimes it was better to weather the storm and sometimes it was better to sleep over at a friend's house for a week or two. It's real hard to love my son in a way that doesn't reflect that abuse back onto him. Sometimes I catch myself thinking ill of him for succeeding, or I get angery and my first thought is to hit or hurt him, and that crushes your soul when you know that's not how life should be for any child. It's hard to explain, but the reaction is almost instinctual, and though it doesn't rear its head every day it still shows up from time to time. Be better, bros. It's a struggle, but you have to do it.
I'm having that problem with relapsing now. 3 or 4 years cultivating my cold, dead heart. Until recently SHE walked into my life. I knew her 16 years ago and just thought of her as a kid. I'm 55. She's 33 now. But recently we crossed paths. She single, no kids, church family, great parents and family, strong father, small town girl. Zero body count. Never really had a boyfriend. Very traditional. Understands that she's too old to start having kids and is ok with that. Simple tastes. Saves money for the future. Doesn't care about brands or status. She doesn't even have a social media account of any kind! Believe me, I checked extensively! She has a RUclips account from 2012 that's just a few Christian music videos and a few cooking tutorials. And that's it! Cute as can be. The perfect girl next door look. Not overweight. No tattoos. No piercings other than one in each ear. Long, feminine hair style with her atural hair color. Works as a secretary for a law firm and totally understands a man's need for a prenup and legal protection. Seriously this girl has everything a man could ever want. Is she the unicorn we all look for and don't believe actually exists anymore? I've known her friends and family long enough to know that she's not pretending just to trap a guy. But I also know how quickly they can be corrupted and change. I'm fighting HARD to resist thinking about giving it a try. I feel like fate has thrown her in my path for one of two reasons. Either 1) because I'm a good man and have worked hard and deserve to be happy and grow old with someone who loves, respects, and appreciates me. Or 2) to check and see if I'm still stupid. I might need an intervention. My cold, black heart is beginning to thaw out, and I don't like it one bit. Somehow I think I'll manage to walk away. I was made to grow old alone. But I know I'll always wonder about what might have been.
This makes me sad. I am truly sorry that you went through situations that have made you feel this way. It also makes me sad because it reminds me of my man before we got together. His ex of 6 years was so terrible, absolutely horrible to him... When they broke up he was completely done with women and at his lowest. He had to start pretty much everything over again. During this time we became extremely close because I was the person he could talk to about his small or deep problem. When he got his new place I completely cleaned, organized and unpacked for him when he was at work. I did anything I could to make his situation easier on him and to see him smile. I showed him not all women are the same and I am still so happy 8 years later that he decided to take the risk of opening his heart to me and so is he. I will love this man and be by his side till the day I die trying to make him smile. Sometimes taking the biggest risk have the biggest rewards. But if you don't see yourself ever able to open up again it may be time to let the lady your around go. It's not fair for you to lead her on. Especially if she is a good woman it will affect her heart being led on just to be let go. And at 33 she doesn't have time to waste especially if she wants marriage.

I think mine has just been broken enough times that the pieces are too small to put back together. I know I almost didn't survive the loss of my marriage. My doctor even wanted to put me in the hospital for observation. My heart was literally giving out. I'm physically better than ever now. And I'm actually quite happy and living a great life. I have more money than I could ever spend. I take care of my parents, but I also travel around the world whenever I want. And soon I'll probably be doing that 100% of the time. So I'm definitely not sitting at home and being a sad sack. I'm a big giant ball of joy and energy! That's one of the problems I have. I know the right woman would add value to my life. But I have so much now that I just don't know if I could justify the risk. I can protect my money and assets. But my heart is still so incredibly fragile and vulnerable. And I mean that in a literal sense. I've dated almost thirty women in the last three or four years and they were all great. Not wife material, but definitely a joy to have spent time with. I'm honest and up front with every one of them and tell them that I'm a broken toy that can't be fixed. I let them know that there's absolutely zero chance of a long term relationship with me. All but one has been ok with that. The one that wasn't thought she could change me. She was a wonderful girl, but not the one for me. It crushed me to see her crying and heartbroken when I broke things off. I let every other girl I've dated go after 60-90 days so that no one could catch feelings. But this one I let go for about a year because I really liked her. I told her over and over that there's no relationship to be had. But I think she always held out hope. I feel like a criminal for that. So yeah, I won't make that mistake again. This girl might be a once in a lifetime chance for me. But I can't bear the thought of hurting someone so sweet and good. And I don't think even the perfect one could fix me. One of the things I loved about having a wife and kids was having someone to protect and who I would gladly give up my own life for. So I guess that's what I'm still doing by letting this girl go. I'm giving up what my heart wants in order to protect her from myself. That's one hell of a tough sacrifice to make. It's funny how some of life's toughest battles are fought when no one else even knows they're happening. So you're probably right. Gotta let her go. Not worth the risks to her. I'm a slow-acting poison behind way too many walls. Your hubby is a very lucky man, by the way. I hope you wake up and choose to love him every single day. :)

But don't think that your poison... You're a human who got hurt who does still deserve love whether it's from yourself or maybe even by someone else in the future. But please don't think you will be poisonous to someone just because of what you went through. Sometimes it's the hard things we go through that show us how to be better people and it sounds like you have worked on yourself a lot to get to a better point in life than where you were. You should be proud of yourself. But who knows maybe one day someone will be able to gain your trust enough to break those walls down but if not it sounds like you have a very fulfilling life and that's what truly matters. Well I can tell ya from experience, I’m 56 and took a chance with someone. It did not go as planned but one thing, no regrets. No “ I wonder how that would have turned out”. Cost me a little time, a little money but nothing inconvenient. I went in with boundaries and when they started being crossed I ended it. But had I not tried, never would have known.

I'm in real estate and my dream car since I was a child playing Need for Speed 3 Hot Pursuit back in 1998 has been the 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV. Damn if that isn't the whole truth. The struggle is real, my dude. I grew up in an emotionally and physically abusive home where often times I didn't know if being at home or if being away was safer. Sometimes it was better to weather the storm and sometimes it was better to sleep over at a friend's house for a week or two.
It's real hard to love my son in a way that doesn't reflect that abuse back onto him. Sometimes I catch myself thinking ill of him for succeeding, or I get angery and my first thought is to hit or hurt him, and that crushes your soul when you know that's not how life should be for any child.
It's hard to explain, but the reaction is almost instinctual, and though it doesn't rear its head every day it still shows up from time to time.

I'm having that problem with relapsing now. 3 or 4 years cultivating my cold, dead heart. Until recently SHE walked into my life.
I knew her 16 years ago and just thought of her as a kid. I'm 55. She's 33 now.
But recently we crossed paths.
She single, no kids, church family, great parents and family, strong father, small town girl. Zero body count. Never really had a boyfriend. Very traditional. Understands that she's too old to start having kids and is ok with that.
Simple tastes. Saves money for the future. Doesn't care about brands or status. She doesn't even have a social media account of any kind! Believe me, I checked extensively! She has a RUclips account from 2012 that's just a few Christian music videos and a few cooking tutorials. And that's it!
Cute as can be. The perfect girl next door look. Not overweight. No tattoos. No piercings other than one in each ear. Long, feminine hair style with her atural hair color. Works as a secretary for a law firm and totally understands a man's need for a prenup and legal protection.

His ex of 6 years was so terrible, absolutely horrible to him... When they broke up he was completely done with women and at his lowest. He had to start pretty much everything over again. During this time we became extremely close because I was the person he could talk to about his small or deep problem. When he got his new place I completely cleaned, organized and unpacked for him when he was at work. I did anything I could to make his situation easier on him and to see him smile. I showed him not all women are the same and I am still so happy 8 years later that he decided to take the risk of opening his heart to me and so is he. I will love this man and be by his side till the day I die trying to make him smile. Sometimes taking the biggest risk have the biggest rewards. But if you don't see yourself ever able to open up again it may be time to let the lady your around go. It's not fair for you to lead her on. Especially if she is a good woman it will affect her heart being led on just to be let go. And at 33 she doesn't have time to waste especially if she wants marriage.

I was married to my ex for 25 years. I loved her and overlooked all the horrible treatment. Even the violence and 13 years of cheating on me. Love does funny things to people.
Please don't ever break that man's heart. I think women carry a little damage from every heartbreak. But they get over them easier than men do.
Men get heartbroken less often. But they can do far more damage. And there's a time when it's just one too many and they can't try again. It's a different number for every guy. I suppose it was two for me.
I think mine has just been broken enough times that the pieces are too small to put back together. I know I almost didn't survive the loss of my marriage. My doctor even wanted to put me in the hospital for observation. My heart was literally giving out.
I'm physically better than ever now. And I'm actually quite happy and living a great life. I have more money than I could ever spend. I take care of my parents, but I also travel around the world whenever I want. And soon I'll probably be doing that 100% of the time.
So I'm definitely not sitting at home and being a sad sack. I'm a big giant ball of joy and energy!
That's one of the problems I have. I know the right woman would add value to my life. But I have so much now that I just don't know if I could justify the risk.
I can protect my money and assets. But my heart is still so incredibly fragile and vulnerable. And I mean that in a literal sense.
I've dated almost thirty women in the last three or four years and they were all great. Not wife material, but definitely a joy to have spent time with. I'm honest and up front with every one of them and tell them that I'm a broken toy that can't be fixed. I let them know that there's absolutely zero chance of a long term relationship with me.
All but one has been ok with that. The one that wasn't thought she could change me. She was a wonderful girl, but not the one for me. It crushed me to see her crying and heartbroken when I broke things off. I let every other girl I've dated go after 60-90 days so that no one could catch feelings. But this one I let go for about a year because I really liked her. I told her over and over that there's no relationship to be had. But I think she always held out hope. I feel like a criminal for that.
So yeah, I won't make that mistake again.
This girl might be a once in a lifetime chance for me. But I can't bear the thought of hurting someone so sweet and good. And I don't think even the perfect one could fix me.
One of the things I loved about having a wife and kids was having someone to protect and who I would gladly give up my own life for. So I guess that's what I'm still doing by letting this girl go. I'm giving up what my heart wants in order to protect her from myself. That's one hell of a tough sacrifice to make.
It's funny how some of life's toughest battles are fought when no one else even knows they're happening.

But don't think that your poison... You're a human who got hurt who does still deserve love whether it's from yourself or maybe even by someone else in the future. But please don't think you will be poisonous to someone just because of what you went through. Sometimes it's the hard things we go through that show us how to be better people and it sounds like you have worked on yourself a lot to get to a better point in life than where you were. You should be proud of yourself. But who knows maybe one day someone will be able to gain your trust enough to break those walls down but if not it sounds like you have a very fulfilling life and that's what truly matters. Well I can tell ya from experience, I’m 56 and took a chance with someone. It did not go as planned but one thing, no regrets. No “ I wonder how that would have turned out”. Cost me a little time, a little money but nothing inconvenient. I went in with boundaries and when they started being crossed I ended it. But had I not tried, never would have known.
