- New VW Golf 8 eTSI 2020 Test Drive & Review.
With the new Golf, Volkswagen has started a hybrid offensive. As the first model of the brand, the eighth Golf will be available in no less than five hybrid drive versions. Its debut also celebrates 48V technology: a belt starter generator, 48V lithium-ion battery and the latest generation of efficient TSI engines form a new mild hybrid drive in the eTSI. Tangible benefits: consumption has been cut by up to 10% (on the basis of WLTP) and the vehicle is extremely agile and comfortable when moving off. Volkswagen will offer the Golf in three eTSI output stages: 81 kW / 110 PS, 96 kW / 130 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS.
The eighth generation of the best-seller will also be available as two plug-in hybrid drive variants. A new efficiency version generates 150 kW / 204 PS while the very sporty GTE delivers 180 kW / 245 PS. Both Golf versions with plug-in hybrid drives will launch with a new 13 kWh lithium-ion battery on board that enables larger electrically powered ranges of approximately 60 kilometres, and temporarily turns the Golf into a zero-emissions vehicle.
The drive options for the new Golf also include a petrol (TSI), diesel (TDI) and natural gas drive (TGI), two three-cylinder petrol engines with 66 kW / 90 PS and 81 kW / 110 PS, two four-cylinder diesel engines with 85 kW / 115 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS, and a TGI with 96 kW / 130 PS. The new TSI variants have particularly low consumption values and emissions thanks to elements including the innovative TSI Miller combustion process. An innovation in the TDI powertrains: Volkswagen uses twin-dosing technology (two SCR catalytic converters) to significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) by up to 80%; in addition, TDI consumption is lowered by up to 17% compared with its predecessor.
The systems have not only been linked to each other, but thanks to an online connectivity unit (OCU), they have also been connected to the world outside the Golf. The standard OCU featuring integrated eSIM links to “We Connect” and “We Connect Plus” online functions and services. The new Golf is also the first Volkswagen to connect with its environment as standard, via Car2X: signals from the traffic infrastructure and information from other vehicles up to 800 metres away are notified to the driver via a display. The Golf also shares these warnings with other Car2X models. Swarm intelligence is becoming a reality, representing the beginning of a new phase of traffic safety.
Never before has a Golf been so progressive. With hybrid versions launched at the same time, it is electrifying the compact class. Its digital interior enables a new dimension of intuitive operation. Speeds of up to 210 km/h are possible with assisted driving. It is the first Volkswagen to use swarm intelligence from traffic via Car2X, meaning it can warn against hazards on an anticipatory basis. Its world premiere takes place in Wolfsburg, where the Golf was invented, and where it has been built and refined for the last 45 years. The new Golf will be available on the market in December.
Your Golf recognizes you - and activates your personal driver profile automatically and depending on the equipment: * from seat adjustment to lighting and comfortable climate. You can conveniently make your preferred settings in the optional Innovision Cockpit: with the 25.4 cm (10-inch) instrument cluster digital cockpit paired with the 25.4 cm (10-inch) navigation system «Discover Pro». In addition to classic content such as a rev counter, speedometer and odometer, you can also display other useful data in the digital cockpit. For example, the entire area can be displayed as a navigation map.
The huge screen area of the “Discover Media” or “Discover Pro” navigation system is used to display many functions in appealing graphics and animations, based entirely on your smartphone. You can assign photos and favorite functions to the home screen yourself
The Golf comes with LED main headlights in series. Visibly dynamically drawn into the deep-drawn front section, laterally into the fenders. Also standard: the integrated fog lights. Also typical: the striking 4-eye look. Everything is also in order at the rear: narrow LED headlights dominate the rear view. Optionally available: the IQ.LIGHT - LED matrix headlights with dynamic high-beam regulation «Dynamic Light Assist», which automatically adjust the light distribution to the traffic.
Particularly striking: the fully digital driver's cockpit with a large display landscape, consisting of the 25.4 cm (10 inch) instrument cluster digital cockpit and the 25.4 cm (10 inch) navigation system «Discover Pro». Thanks to the intuitive touch operation, a number of switches, buttons and controls are no longer required. The ambient light, with optional up to 32 different colors, creates a personalized lighting atmosphere. With all digital innovations, of course, the typical golf feeling remains.

So do you think the DSG has become trustable on the golf 8? Would you recommend it over the manual?
I think manual transmission it is always more reliable and last longer ....but the comfort and the advantages of this wireless automatic transmission make me choice it as an option and maybe it is better then before....👍

Hi Dan I’m stuck between getting a hatchback and a suv, if I get a hatch I will be getting this Golf 8 1.5 eTSI DSG STYLE and if I get a suv I’m thinking of the Volvo XC40 1.5 R-DESIGN what do you think?
Hi Will , depend for what you need. If you dont need big space in the car or you just drive most in the city Golf is perfect ...if you want to be more safe in case of accident or you need more interior space Volvo ...but Volvo will cost more and consumption will be bigger

There are many many useless electronics in the cars nowadays. Too bad they are linking good options to the sale of these junk electronics.
It's a case of why fix it if it ain't broke
Obviously if I would put myself into a Tesla and do a review, I would sit and fumble with all the controls because I don't know how it works. The same if I you would give someone a smartphone with a completely new OS and expect him to quickly work out all the features. Cars and infotainment systems are getting more advanced, of course there will be a quick learning phase first. Autoreviewers have just a few minutes to get familiar with the cars before they go on a test-drive. Obviously they will not know all the features and how to use them right away.
The volkswagen's vehicle equipped DSG shows shifting position like S2 or S3 where car shift. But the video do not show it. Is it DSG right? or is the option that delete showing shifing position added ??? im really curios it.
This is the new technology also DSG but the shifter is wireless, so much better because they can make it smaller 👍👍

Hey man, I watched your Honda Civic E:HEV reviews before, and now as I am looking into Golf as well, so I'm watching this one :)
On that topic, I have a question: Would you rather have this Golf (exactly this eTSI 1.5 model, with Style equipment) than Honda Civic E:HEV (Sport), if you would have it way cheaper than Civic? For example here in Germany, you can get one year old Golf eTSI for like 25k (Civic only 2024 starting from 35k+)?
This video is an excellent showcase as to why touchscreens are a terrible idea in cars. It took him literally forever to turn off the climate control. Thank you for posting this video.

@Joe Kinchicken The issue wasn't with the interface itself, as it was easy to use. It was with the time it took to load, for the most part.
My particular issue with touchscreen/touch button interfaces in general is that you can't feel where the buttons are, thus you're forced to take your eyes off the road to make sure that your input is 100% accurate.

Hello we have golf 8 and we are not able to display navigation on the central console and on the dashboard at the same time.
I try pressing the VIEW button but it not changes anything. I'm able to show the navigation on the dashboard but then central console is becoming a giant compass. Any hints?
Adrian unfortunately you can't have it on both at the same time....it is strange but they do it like this.....only on new version you can have both ....😪

Both are very similar in terms of mechanical stuff. The difference is in the design and materials. It is an subjective choice both are great. 👍
35,000 euros for a car based on the chassis of its predecessor, with only a few minor changes and a new set of screens, is really crazy. At this price tag, I would definitely go for an authentic premium car instead.VW's CEO has found a brilliant way indeed to cope with VW's losses after the Dieselgate.

How come golf in your country comes without the rear camera? It comes as standard in mine, I thought it would come as standard for all trims

mathias61 that has nothing to do, it’s about the tech package that VW or other car manufacturers offer there, in my country even the most basic trim level comes with the rear camera, but I know now that in some countries like USA for example it’s not the same for different cars

How it feels and drives against Mazda 3 in your opinion?
They are both great cars. Both have different styles. I like both. But.... Golf 8 have an amazing multimedia system, fantastic pedals, very good visibility, cheaper replace parts. Mazda have a nicer look. More beautiful, look more expensive and more unique.....but still fun to drive
@@SDADanCars thanks for an answer, i like mazda's exterior, interior, materials and analog buttons more than golf's ones. But doesnt Golf's turbo motor + multilink susp. outclass the mazda in terms of comfort and fun driving or there is really just a small difference between them. I unfortunately cant test myself cause Golf 8 wont be released in my local market till 2021 so i dont know if i should wait...

You have to turn on "Adaptive Lane Assist" ... then you will see how good it is :)

@@SDADanCars "Lane Assist" and "Adaptive Lane Guidance" are different things, once you turn on "Lane Assist" the car will stay in the lane, you can then activate "Adaptive Lane Guidance" (in the Lane Assist menu) to keep the car from ping-pong within the lane lines.

It is an button on navigation system on multimedia, there you have to push it and choice to see it on cockpit. 👍

I have a 2019 Golf R mk7.5 stick of course, and man, it's simple, I get in and DRIVE!!! and rear view camera is like automatic when I put in reverse, how no reverse camera in these days, one of the best things they came up with, the best being fuel injection, and get rid of Carburetors! All this stuff , too much STUFF. In the U.S. it's mandatory to have a backup camera, maybe not in Europe?
In Europe not yet ...here are also many cars whit no reverse camera 🙂
How much is Fuel consumption?

Just picked up a Mk8 Style.
After trying for some time to get the NAV to display on the Virtual Cockpit, I gave up and called the dealer...
Turns out, my model doesn't allow for this feature! Absolute madness as the hardware is clearly capable of it.
I'm massively disappointed in VW.
My previous cars, (Golf Mk7.5, A1, Q3, Leon) all allowed for this!
Had I known, I genuinely would not have gotten the Golf!

NEW GOLF8 タイプはeＴＳＩの動画ですね、ディスプレイ、ナビ画面とも7.5より、大きくなり見やすくなりました。日本上陸の仕様は未定ですが、画面の解像度等、同等の仕様をして欲しいです。
また、ＳＷ類が殆んど無く、シンプルになりましたね。早く右ハンドル日本仕様タイプを日本に上陸させて下さい。

i have seen a ton of reviews of this model, which i ordered one month ago. It has come to my attention, that pretty much the rest of the EU countries start this models price around 30.000 euros. im from Cyprus and i bought this car for 21.000 euros. its starting price is 21.900 euros but i added a few extras adding up to 24.000 euros and VW gave me a good discount. i havent seen a single country that sells this model for less than 28.000 euros. in the uk, this model starts at 28.000 pounds, in germany 40.000 euros, croatia 35.000 euros and italy 28.000 euros. the difference is huge and although i can think of reasons i cant figure out why the price is SO MUCH higher in the rest of the EU. it would cost much much less if everyone buys the car from Cyprus and ships to their country of origin, shipping wouldnt cost more than 1.000 euros as i have shipped cars from the EU before. it hasnt been delivered yet but i cant wait.

They shat on and completely ruined the logo
Logo is ugly. The car is a low effort change compared to Golf 7. They added those stupid touch interfaces and as a result it takes you some minutes to figure out how to turn off AC. That proves my point. The steering wheel is ugly. The buttons especially looks cheap and nasty. Great that they put buttons on the steering wheel, but all the other important controls on the dash are touch.
Don't get me wrong, feels like a very nice car, but the prices are just insane.

Such a shame....GTI was on my short list for our next new car..not anymore thank you....I hate touchscreens (old fart here)....I simply refuse to partake and compromise in this nonsense. I guess I'll keep my 2012 VW Beetle (with real knobs and switches) a few more years or look for a used MK7 when the time comes.

cheaper production quality than previous generation, cheap mild hybrid with just an added 48 V battery and a BSG with still a high fuel consumption as a result, starting prices are way too expensive with a lot of features still missing... overall its a poor car. But it is a VW, so people are gonna buy it anyways

Its not about getting use to it....it's about taking your attention off the road for more than 6 seconds each time you have to change something.......that's dangerous.....we are all used to using touch screen phones for years but we still have to take our attention off what ever we are doing and focus on navigating through the phone to be effective....that's why using your phone is dangerous and prohibited

@@tmtmolokwane6357 absolutely agree with your point. Touch screens force you to take your eyes off the road which is a way bigger distraction than just fiddling a knob to adjust the A/C. This was my first thought when I saw the Tesla touch screen. Perhaps if it could be adjusted with the steering via the heads up display (similar to changing a radio station) that would be less distracting.
Stop groveling tell the truth,review ,mention the things theye have taken out of the golf, draws cubty holes,the horrible green tint on mirror at night ,that you can not turn off,
The 2.0lte tai manual is only 115 bhp,where are the two draws under the seats,the slide cover over the cup holders, no knobs ,its been downgraded, to pay the diesle gate fine,
I just show what I see at the first glitch. My Model 3 have also tinted mirrors at night.
@@SDADanCars no you don't understand, the mirror is green in the middle and has a strip around it only 3 mm but its hard to focus on when you just glance at it ,on all my mk 5 6 7 you could turn it offsets just a cost cutting things would rather pay extra to be able to turn it off,
the draw on drivers side next to door, where I keep my gasses cleaner,deoderant,and small pack of tissues ,its gone, the draws under the seats wear I keep cheque book etc gone,
ext ext, I dont want a cheaper golf, if I wanted a cheap car hyena,toyata ford fiat ect are much cheaper, and to top it all the drivers car the 2.0ltr diesel is only 115 bhp, i dont care about the
