Very good looking Golf. Find it a real achievement on how VW is able to keep the Golf so fresh, but also able to preserves much of its heritage. Love the Infotainment system idea and look, but really disappointing that it is to slow. I thought manufacturers would at this time not fall into the trap of underpowering the CPU. I agree with Thomas, that for some basic functions, like temp and volume a rotating knob is still the best experience.

Honestly don't know why it works so laggy, on my car works awesome, just like a smartphone! Maybe I got an update, who knows. Also, live doesn't look that cheap as on these RUclips reviews. :) Anyway, good job Thomas, personally I like the car, leasing it was awesome, so not sure if I would buy it but receiving a nice offer for a lease, that worked perfect for me and I am happy with it.

A very fair review. I think that if even Thomas would 'rage' about the controls in this car, VW probably needs to take another look at them, though I think the design of the dash is nice. I don't really like the exterior look of this version, not that the previous one was particularly attractive. The Peugeot 308 that Thomas also just tested is so much more attractive and stylish I think. The stying wouldn't matter so much if it was obviously the best car in its class but I'm not sure it's so obvious in 2020.

Touch and screens is the way to go, then all of a sudden it won't matter because full autonomous driving will be the way to go. And then we dangerous humans won't be allowed to drive anymore, just touch giant iPads and spit voice commands...
And come on guys!! Are you really buying a car based on number of gas struts?? In the engine compartment?????
Style and look wise, felt weird initially but now it's kinda growing on me. Matter of taste for sure. Just wait for R-line, better all-around with the fancier gti seats and steering wheel!

Thomas, can you comment on how the DSG DQ200 with the new MHEV 1.5 TSI compares to the older Golf 7 1.5 TSI Evo DSG, since you drove the older as well, if you recall from the GTI/non-gti/Sportswagen combo video. I just cannot seem to leave mine to D (auto), particularly over speed bumps in my university campus or in pedestrian crossings everywhere the gearbox seems to get confused and does a very weird move similar to: 4 (regular gear) to 3 (because I'm slowing down) to 2 (because it thinks I need hill descent assist), then to 3 (??? I'm still slowing down, I just need less brakes maybe, so it shifts up), to 2 (the correct gear it should've stuck with) :-/
I'm tired of the gearbox always shifting up and down in confusion, it's trying too hard to be good but instead it wastes clutch ant nothing else :-D

@@autogefuehl Ah well, I'm happy with the 7.5 as you've said at the end; I prefer the "older" interior design, actually the new A3 looks incredible on a side note. The old A3 was too empty for me, the new driver oriented one just works great I think.
Back onto the gearbox; maybe I'm exaggarating a bit in my own head, coming from a manual 308 1.6 petrol to my first dual clutch system. Whilst I love the great upshifts with the preselect, I might look into a torque converter type automatic the next time, who knows :-)
Thanks for a great video as always! I hope VW goes back to the traditional interior but they seem to be trying very hard to differentiate the A3 this time round, the Golf was so much better than the old A3 after all.

Hi Thomas, great review of this new Golf! When I leased my new Jetta back in Feb, the Jetta was much less to lease than a standard Golf. I've never understood why it costs more than a Jetta when in many ways, it should be the economy car of the brand here in the US? I would have preferred to lease a new Golf, but had to save money and leased the Jetta. Its ok, but not so great. Cheers!

    • @autogefuehl

Thanks! That’s because the Jetta is built in Puebla Mexiko and the Golf hatch in Wolfsburg Germany. U dont pay import taxes for the Jetta and transport is cheaper as well. Also, the targeting of the Jetta rather aims at a little cheaper than the Golf which shall more be put towards premium

    • @DavGreg

Autogefühl In the US, the Golf Mk 7 & 7.5 was sourced in Puebla. My Mk 6 was made in Wolfsburg. The last 2 generations of Jetta are noticeably cheaper feeling than the Mk 7 Golfs- right down to the switchgear. The Jetta is a rental car at best. Americans generally associate hatchbacks with cheap. The most expensive Jetta feels cheaper than the base model Golf and both are built in Puebla.

Thomas, your reviews are as interesting as always. I have seen 1st one in Portugal, too. In this one you said that fuel consumption is about 40mpg (7l/100km). I wonder how much would 1.5 eTSI consume in the city drive. A friend of mine has Seat Arona 1.0TSI, which is 2 years old and consumes more than 10l per 100km in city drive. On the highway consumption is much less, under 6l. I was told in VW exhibition room that mild hybrid saves 10% of fuel. I am a little bit hesitant about that. Diesel probably goes below 5l, maybe 6.5l in the city. Regards!

I am aware of the fact that diesel engines are being discontinued. I don't see much use of mild hybrid other than getting a subsidy from the government (in Serbia not even that, only full eV, plugin hybrid and classical hybrids like Toyota get subsidies from the state, not eTSI). 1.4 TSI plugin hybrid is a perfect choice, but a lot more expensive. Good thing about Golf8 1.5 eTSI is the price.

The missing gas strut is a bit odd as there is a fixing point for it in the engine bay. One reviewer made the comment that maybe it was a safety issue when testing the bonnet crumple zone as it’s possible the strut when in the closed position could stop the bonnet crumpling properly. He also pointed out that they have fitted two bonnet catches instead of one and that a bonnet catch costs more than a gas strut so they haven’t saved money on the overall bonnet design.

I have a Vw Golf 1.5 eTSI 150cv Dsg without the drive mode selector and find the freewheel system very intreventive. When you take your foot off the accelerator the gearbox de-gears to save fuel, which sometimes makes the car loose/unsafe in some situations.

I hope Golf 9 reverts to ventilation/infotainment/climate center stack. In the era of virtual cockpits and head up displays, there is no justification for the high-raised infotainment screen. There is absolutely zero information one needs for driving on it, especially if it comes at a price of wrist-killing vents. Sadly, Golf 9 is 5+ years away and I don’t expect the change from mid-life refresh.
I was on the market for Golf 8 and after test drive I must say, I like its overall appearance - it looks way better in person than on camera. It drives well, seats and seating position are very comfortable, steering wheel and door handles feel pleasant to touch.
But the infotainment, missing buttons and overall UX are really subpar. I am not willing to support such trend, so Golf is off the list for me.
