  • Ok, I must be the last one getting hands on with the Omega X Swatch MoonSwatch. But I have to say... To call it anything but landfill is a bit of a stretch.... but for some strange reason..... I just freaking love it.
I don't know why! I can't tell you logically why my heart chooses the MoonSwatch... but it does! :'(

This reminds me of bad business practices similar to Nintendo where stock of the product is purposely launched in limited quantities to hype up a product to sell more Swatches. You bring your a really good point about Swatch, Britt. When I was in high school, swatches were EVERYWHERE. Everyone had one and you could - brave yourself - go to the department store and buy one. Or you could go to the fancy Swatch store at the fancy mall where all the people with their German sports cars went. Now? If I want one, I can order online or take a train to NYC. And much like Mordor, one does not simply take a train to NYC. It’s great they have a cool new product that people want, but it makes no difference if you can’t buy it.

So I been thinking about this for a few weeks. I have only been into watches this year, so I am pretty new to the hobby. I agree with your points, MoonSwatch is plastic and cheap and the availability sucks. But as far as it being just hype, I am going to push back. It kinda depends on what you mean by hype. The people buying this watch (my wife for instance) are not choosing it because its Omega (she doesn't know what Omega is). They are not picking it over a Seiko 5 SKX. They are buying a fun space themed widget. They wouldn't buy a watch otherwise. Most people don't wear watches. They don't buy them. The MoonSwatch is an entertainment item like a new video game or a wacky case for your phone. The "watch" part of it is almost irrelevant. I love them because I love space and I love the colors and I think most people could give two s**ts about the functionality. So I would say its not hype without substance, but the substance isn't the "watch" part of this watch. Its everything else.

Could have bought a couple of paganni design speedmaster v3s for the price of it or a seagull 1963. So many better options. The moonswatch has devalued the brand and legacy of the Speedmaster professional (not that we landed on the moon anyway) but, I am glad they released it as it's totally deleted my desire to buy a real Speedmaster, in turn saving me ££££

I’m glad you’re not jumping on the “I hate Moonswatch” bandwagon. It is what it is, for £220 it’s a fun toy but definitely not a beater watch, which the new G shock is and cheaper though. Those scratches can be buffed out by polywatch if it’s not too deep.
Also, shout out to Kraft mac and cheese! I tried it in Toronto and get it imported occasionally too 😂😂😂

Completely agree on most points. I still want one, but instead I have picked up more vintage watches for my collection. I have Swatches going back to the 80s, Rolexes, Omegas, and a lot more. I consider myself an enthusiast/collector, but don’t live geographically near a Swatch store, so not likely to get one anytime in the near future.

Whoa, looks like I've just dodged a bullet... Let's be honest, for some people price for a real, proper Omega is sadly an unbreakable barrier, so I was initially quite excited, when I've learned about these watches recently. Mainly though, I go for quality, then the price. So when a watch bears a logo of Omega, I was expecting, that the case will be actually ceramic. Hell, it could be even generic stainless steel, but some cheap plastic? No, thank you. I torture my G-Shock at work on a daily basis, but even though it looks like it was already run over by a train, it still works, and I can always relatively easy buy online parts, like a new strap or bezel. And even replace them myself. While I could still live with that plastic case, I can't believe these Swatches have plastic glass. Well, I wouldn't expect top-tier sapphire for the price, but not even standard, hardened mineral glass? Really? I don't buy a watch to flex, I want to use it for as long as possible, and I want it to be reliable (in regard to its price). Lately, I was looking at Vostok's Europe Energia series and now I guess I stick with choosing one of those - these are really nice watches. And to complement it, I'm going to buy one of the original Vostok Komandirskie watches, which are currently priced around 65 USD... And I'm going to wear it proudly. From what I see, it's still made from better parts and with better finish, than those Swatches.
However I must admit, the name of one of these Swatches, the "Mission to Uranus" sounds quite catchy - it could be a perfect gift for a new girlfriend 🤣🤣🤣

Agreed, with everything you said- If you are wearing this "Watch" as a beater watch (Adrien) 🙂 maybe you should rethink that. Clearly the marketing of this "product" was brilliant. The Quality is below par but its a "Collectable" item. (Swatches are Collectables) Disposable is a little extreme I think. Yeah a little too expensive and they should be available "on line". However, I'd rather see people stand "On Line" for a watch than a Phone. Thanks.

Totally agree with the assessment. I went last week into one of the London stores. Just to check the watch and to my absolute shock what I found was that the stock is still extremely limited that you can't even hold one in your hand at the store forget about getting hold of one. The staff said that they get stock twice every week. No fixed number, no fixed days. People queue up from 6am everyday and if its their lucky day, they get informed at about 10am that they have the stock today otherwise goodbye. Absolutely horrendous for a piece of crap! People will still buy it for being the Moonswatch but a GREAT failed opportunity from SWATCH!

Great video Britt, but I don't think you should dismiss the price to quality argument. Just my 2 cents but I believe that's a major part of why Swatch was flopping before the Moonswatch release. $200 for disposal, fun crap is too much for even non-enthusiasts. A plastic Casio for $20 will last pretty much a lifetime, so Swatch really has been overpricing all their stuff and suffering for it.

It’s genius in every way. Of course it starts with what possibly is the greatest watch the original Omega Pro Speedmaster Moonwatch. They are fun and silly, and not to be taken all that seriously, yet the design and concept is brilliant. I also think that many young people and adults as well will get into fine watches because of this, and into Omega. Not to be repetitive but it’s bloody genius. I need them all!!! All 11.
By the way the next colab is on the way between Swatch and Blancpain the legendary Fifty Fathoms. Excellent comparison between Mac’n cheese and this. Same with cheap ramen noodles in a bag, also knows as Crack-Head Soup here in the Big Apple. :)

I have no interest in the moonswatch. But I did pick up a snoopy swatch a few months ago thinking it will be just fun colorful watch. Wore it once and I ended up giving it to my sister. I do have a few Casioaks that I find more enjoyable and they are 1/2 the price. I think the moonswatch can be a gateway for some people to get into watches. My friend was just gifted one and even though his bf has a few Rolex watches, he has never been into watches. Now after a few days of wearing the moonswatch, he is talking about getting a Speedy.

I wonder how this will effect omega in the future. I thought one of swatch groups ideas with the moonswatch was the brand loyalty and the idea of catch them young and they will stay with the brand. Will in the future the young people who bought the moonswatch think, "O I remember that moonswatch I had" and go out and buy an Omega. Or will they " I remember that price of shit moonswatch I had, there's no way I'll buy an Omega". They may well have shot themselve in the foot for the future.

Prices now for mint examples are around 1k,and a decent example runs around £600.00. I personally think its fantastic.
Watch collecting, in the journey at somepoint we all want to own one of the mega brands. The history the luxury the Nod from fellow watch lovers at a great time piece and most of all The brand recognition.
The average individual that works a regular job, after bills and living doesn't have allot left to play with. .. This watch allows people with much smaller budgets to say they have a omega, to enjoy the conversation with everyone and own a piece of history without a £6000+ price tag that for most is unattainable.
Celebrate that everyone can join in here, I don't feel it damaged omega brand atol because if you can afford the real deal you will still buy it over this.
This simply allows everyone to be apart of the conversation and community.

Maybe they think other people will be impressed or envy them. Nope. They love them because they love them.

In the UK the university student union bars get the biggest discounts from the breweries who’s theory is that if you can get someone drinking their beer for their first three years of drinking, then they will drink that beer for the rest of their lives.
Swatch just put thousands of watches on the wrists of young people who never wore a watch before, who’d never been a watch store. And what watch do you think they’d be most likely to buy in ten years when they’ve got some real money. Meanwhile, sales of the real Speedmaster have increased and used prices have risen in a declining market. It’s genius. 🤩
