The BRIDEAR band jetted out to Gothenburg, Sweden to record their sixth studio album with the legendary metal producer Fredrik Nordström [IN FLAMES, AT THE GATES, HAMMERFALL, BRING ME THE HORIZON] at Studio Fredman.
Alongside the announcement of the new album, the band have released a new music video for a new song lifted from the upcoming album; Still Burning. The new song’s accompanying music video was also filmed in Gothenburg and gives a taste of the band’s live performances, captured by Patric Ullaeus [ARCH ENEMY].

When Bridear started in 2012, they were the heaviest japanese female heavy metal band at the time. Now with these two guitarists, they have returned to their roots. Great development.

This is THE band that I earnestly wish would get some U. S. tour dates…the most underrated group in all of J-metal, with an absolute wrecking machine of a drummer behind the kit. 🤘🔥🍻🇯🇵🙇‍♂️

This is definitely a return to their roots. Their original sound was hard and heavy, then they spent some time exploring other styles (which also coincided with a period of lineup instability). But they've updated the sound too.

I've been curious about a number of things, but I'll just ask something that can be answered without specifics. Part of the lyrics in Still Burning is: "Don't be satisfied yet / the show is just getting started." Would you say that works as a hint for the rest of the album?

@@zephyr835 Could be taken that way, though I don't know if they meant it that way. The songs were all written and a lot of the recordings done before a final decision was made on which song to use for the first video.

Glad to see you come back to Bridear! I really enjoyed the reactions for Aegis of Athena (and I've only seen one other person go through that whole album).
The richer tone here helps this song to hit harder, but I think it's similar to two of their other albums: Baryte and Expose Your Emotions. Pointing out some punk-rock energy in the chorus is interesting, and that has been at least a small facet of their style before.

I have heard almost one hundred percent positive comments for this song, which is great. A lot of longer running fans have pined away for them to bring back some of their early sound. I think they did just that, but with fresher version of that sound. Ayumi and MOE just released another Sukiyaki sisters compilation of songs with a similar flavor to this song. They were and are certainly capable of any genre. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album and will be interested in where they tour following the release.

Yeah, it's a very good song with a great vibe. I wouldn't say it's one of their absolute best, but I love the style and I'm very optimistic for the upcoming album after hearing it. They went to a studio in Sweden to record it, so I expect the whole album to have a consistent sound.
Btw, I don't want to distract from Bridear, but I have to mention that Asterism released an EP today "Planet of Metal", and I absolutely love it. Quite a bit more than Ignition, Animetic and Decide. There aren't any MVs yet, probably because it's part of a collaboration with a visual artist, and there will be promotions to come around that. But anyway, the lack of MVs means that nobody else is reacting to it yet. Not that I'm making a hint or anything.... 😂

I think this was produced at Studio Fredman in Sweden. I really like the resulting heavy sound. Great drumming by Natsumi. I think the song is not very catchy, at least so far. I'm really curious for the rest of the album. Bridear will always have a special place in my heart because they were the first band I saw live when Covid restrictions were slowly being lifted in 2021. I really needed something like this at that time.

Yes, they have always been very metal ... especially the first version of this band. They have always featured dual guitars and the Sukiyaki sisters are wonderful now. Kimi and Haru are the OG members. Natsumi (ex-TELECiDE drummer) was added in 2019. Finally Moe, Ayumi's sister was added most recently to round out the guitar section.

There's a buzz about the new album. Natsumi posted today she has lost a lot of weight with training/studio work and is having to cram junk food to keep energy levels up. I guess a tour is coming 🙏 UK fans can't be greedy but I hope they return soon.

I think the reason why this sounds pretty heavy is because the new album (releasing next month) was recorded in Sweden and produced by an expirenced Swedish metal producer (Fredrik Nordström) who produced for a lot of metal bands, from melodic death metal to black metal from what I can see. I don't know their early output as well, but I have heard it was a mix of metalcore with power metal and the little I have heard was certainly heavier than the last album. They are also on a Western label for this new album if I am not mistaken. As far as the track goes, I think it's pretty good although I can personally do without the melodic chorus (like with so many Japanese bands). I am also still not 100% sold on the doubling/production on Kimi's vocals and her vocals in general, but I am looking forward to the new album and I honestly like this more than most of the tracks on Aegis of Athena. I hope it does well for them.

Psychomanteum Records is a rebranding of Setsuzoku Records. Kept Bridear, Exist Trace and Mari Hamada and dropped the idol and pop related stuff. If I understand it correctly the label felt the need to distance themselves from certain aspects of japanese pop culture in order to move on internationally.

Maybe because of all the crazy stuff that came out a while ago with one of the big J-Pop/Idol companies or something. It's pretty unique at least for a Japanese label to operate in the West like this. I pre-ordered my copy in Japan because it was cheaper as the label doesn't have their European store up at the moment and the US shipping is more expensive than the Japanese shipping (especially if you include custom fees which are not a thing for me on a-zon jp). But for people in the US it's probably going to be way easier and cheaper this way, which is a good thing.

@@MaartenTI think they are still transitioning, the rebranding happened at the end of 23. But its s western (UK I think) label started during the pandemic. Seems they are going for a mix of japanese and western artists which makes sense for japanese bands who are willing to go outside of their comfort zone (and bridear was always up for that)

Easily one of the best things I've heard from them. My only problem was the growling, it sounded like an afterthought that was just kind of thrown in.

    • @zephyr835

I think it was probably deliberate. Before the pre-chorus the first time through, the instruments all lay out for a measure and there's no cymbal hit when they come back in. That seems like a setup and emphasis for the harsh-vocal entry.
