Honestly, both are beautiful cars in their own unique way. The CX-9 gives more of a mature/sophisticated appearance and feel. Whereas the Highlander give more space and a comfortable feel. Either way you cannot go wrong with either choice. My personal preference here would be the CX-9.

Why would consumers purchase a midsize 3 row crossover rather than one of multitude of midsize 2 row alternatives offered by virtually every automaker other than Mazda? Presumably because they need/want a third row of seats on at least an occasional basis. With that in mind, how do the CX-9 and the Highlander stack up?
Not well. The CX-9 has 29.7" of 3rd row legroom. That's near the bottom of all its rivals, nearly all of which offer at least 31+" of rear seat legroom. In fact, the Mazda offers only 110" of total legroom in all three rows and 135 cubic ft of overall passenger space. (legroom/headroom/shoulder and hip room). But all is not lost for the Mazda. The Toyota Highlander is just as cramped if not more so. It provides only 27.7" of third row legroom, 109" of total legroom, and a total of 136 cubic ft of passenger room.
To get an idea of how inefficiently packaged both the CX-9 and Highlander are, the KIA Sorento is the shortest midsize 3 row crossover. Only 189" in length compared to the 195" Highlander and the 199" CX-9. Its 3rd row legroom amounts to 31.4". Its total legroom in all three rows is 115" and its overall passenger room is 154 cubic ft.
Does all this matter? Not if you don't need overall passenger space and seating for more than 5 passengers. But if that's the case, why bother with any 3 row crossover? As noted above, nearly every automaker offers two row midsize crossover, almost all of which offer more interior room for four or five passengers and as much or more cargo capacity behind the second row of seats.
