Hands down, my favorite composition ever! Fun fact: the song is composed not in 3/4, not in 4/4, not in 7/8. It is composed in 22/8! The initial pattern ostinato can be heard in almost the whole tune.

JP, you have some very interesting insights about “The First Circle”. To me, it is one of the greatest musical compositions of all time. It has a complex time signature (22/8), complex rhythm, chord progression, and orchestration. And, it is just plain beautiful! I bought the CD in 1984 when it came out. I have to this song hundreds of times and never tired of it. Each time I listen to I get inspired. Joy bubbles up through the song. Pedro Aznar’s voice as an instrument is the cherry on the icing on the cake. 200 years from now people will be playing and listening to Pat Metheny’s music. He is one of the greatest musicians of all time and my favorite musician of all time!

Very astute observations. Pat Metheny years ago said people always have told him that his music is best appreciated driving on the highway. There's an open spaciousness to much of the PMG music.

Congrats on discovering a true American treasure. You will find endless inspiration in Pat’s music. The light airy feel you describe is intrinsic in most of his music. It’s like a cross between jazz and Americana the open pastoral heartland landscape (Pat being from Missouri). The main rhythm in this song is in 22/8 (3+2+3+2+2+3+3+2+2). By this album they were getting a very slick, produced sound. I prefer the early albums where it sounded much more stripped down and like just a band playing in a room. Try the live album Travels.

@JustJP - news hit Feb 10, 2020 that Lyle Mays, co-composer and co-arranger with Metheny for the PMG, passed away in Los Angeles after a long battle with a recurring illness. His solo on First Circle, as well as his playing on Ozark, San Lorenzo, Until The End of the World, September Fifteenth, The Way Up, Au Lait, and so many other pieces are plaintive, piercing, joyous, and solemn - often within the same piece.

Your definition of Pat Metheny's work is as good as one as I can think of. I started listening to him in 1982 when I was in the army. Through the years I have had the pleasure of listening to his music. Many times I have been a bit down and was brought up by it. Thank you for this. If you get the chance, The Search is a beautiful piece of music.

The First Circle stands out for me, because I had been listening to Pat Metheny and owned several LPs at the time, The First Circle Tour, was the very first time I saw Pat play LIVE! They played the concert in a Church in Grand Rapids Michigan. It was amazing and I have been hooked on seeing Pat play live, for the 40 years since! I’ve seen over 30 live performances. They never disappoint.
You mention the song reminds you of stained glass. What better place to see this performed than in a church.

Perfectly said. Pat Metheny's song "The search" has this... shearing feel to it. In a good way. It's a windy song who's strong gusts strip away the pain. The intro always makes me grit my teeth. Connecting with and pulling away the pain of everyday life. When the intro ends and the song kicks in, you feel nothing but Blissful emotional weightlessness. A good feeling for reflecting on life.

Pat Metheny was introduced to me in my first year of college 1981. From his earliest work with Jaco Pastorius thru The Way Up were all part of my library. Love his melodic playing and writing. Soothes my inner being. IAl DiMeola and Pat were my staples as I moved into other music genre besides rock. Hope you enjoy the ride thru the albums.

Thanks for this. This is one of the PMG albums that made me appreciate jazz. I have every PMG album made. Glad to know you dig it. If I thought you’d be into jazz I’d have suggested the Pat Metheny Group (PMG) a looong time ago.
36 Grammy nominations and 20 Grammys won.
Pat Metheny (Meh-theee-nee) is THE finest guitarist on the planet...and maybe the universe.
Phrasing, intonation and melodic romanticism that no other can match. There are only 4 guitarists to ever be named to the Downbeat Magazine HOF and Pat is the only one of the 4 still alive. And while I love First Circle...there are other PMG songs that better hallmark his guitar genius. Try “3rd Wind” or “To the End of the World”. BTW Pat still tours. Do yourself a favor. If he comes anywhere close to you...go. Your wife will dig it too. Pat is a great date concert.

Hands down, IMHO, one of, if not THE greatest jazz compositions of the last 50 years or so, and the PMG is one of my favorite groups. Pat has an extremely wide range of influences - ECM label stuff, the Beatles, Ornette Coleman, folk, rock, bebop, etc. This cut was from his trilogy of Brazilian influenced albums including 'Still Life Talking', and 'Letter from Home'. His 'More Travels DVD' is a great visual reference to the PMG group at their best.
That being said, when you talk about the ethereal, uplifiting beauty of that song, a recommendation or two from another group does come to mind ... 'Grazing Dreams' or 'Ghostbeads' from the group 'Oregon'. Oregon was more or less the rhythm section of 'The Paul Winter Consort', a jazz group who dabbled in Brazilan sounds, but found later fame in pioneering 'New Age' by mixing jazz improv with sounds of wild animals. As much as I love the PMG, and acknowledge their larger impact on world culture, I think a good case could be made for the members of Oregon being every bit the equals of the PMG group in instrumental virtuosity ... and with their own unique and instantly recognizable sound.

There are many different phases to Metheny's (pron.Metheeny)career. I'd probably start someone out with his first big album called "Pat Metheny Group"(1978) . This is the band he had for a long time with co-writer and synth player Lyle Mays. A lot of memorable melody lines. There was a period where he was playing a guitar synth using a sort of trumpet sound to play almost rocky lead guitar - see "Offramp" (1981), and the live "Travels" (1983). There is also a performance at the 1990 Mellon Jazz Festival with Jack DeJohnette (dr.), Herbie Hancock (p.), and Dave Holland (bass), all of whom played with Miles Davis. If you see this comment - I just found your channel, and found a lot of things I have info on. I hope the comments are more useful than inconvenient. One word about the copyright thing: It's all about ECM, a record label situated in Munich where I live. On a concert I took the opportunity to talk to him about that his label is so restrictive according to the music they published. He refused to talk about it with me...... Quite disappointing to me as I'm owning minimum 100 CDs that has been published on this phantastic record label.

Hey man, just saw you reacted to Pat Metheny group as well so I had to drop in a recommendation to something you may enjoy and also a little disclaimer about him & the band:
-First song on "We Live Here" Album, called "Here to Stay"
-The entire "Letter from Home" Album is just incredible and deserves a full day to ponder and listen to. Kinda treat it like it's your only music for a day and you'll love it :)
Disclaimer about Pat Metheny: Dude's a genius but at times a little hard to enjoy, and I may add I've got the nostalgia bonus of having listened to him in the car as a kid. You can tell very clearly if he's out for harmony or complexity and at times they're a bit exclusive to each other. He's also got a Solo career with incredible gems of music throughout a 30 year career (Listen to "New Chautauqua" and "Secret Story", my 2 fav Albums). I really you hope you do some more of his stuff, even though I must warn you his label is pretty strict about copyright infringement so 90% of his songs aren't on YT anymore.
Listening to New Chautauqua now and smiling very much :)

Yes ! Here we are ! This is exactly the kind I ... hate! I am not able to give a single explaination. It's visceral, I have an allergy, I just can't.
It's not so much musically speaking. I can eventually enjoy jazz fusion or whatever the name you want to give it. It is the musical treatment of these pieces. The choice of instruments and sounds, and the use of these voices. Oh, those voices! I'm sorry but I can't. Really.
Initially, I believed in a sign of a Power beyond me, without knowing if it came from above or from below. The copyright problem seemed to want telling me something.
But then, I still felt that I had to make the effort to go and follow the link to listen to the song. New sign! Geographical restrictions didn't allowed me to access the video. What should I do? Take it as a warning? Why did I force destiny by searching for other sources? I did it yet. A live in Japan. I knew I should not have!
But then, why did I insist again? I found another video. So, I've listened the thing twice in a row, as a fool I am! Well, it wasn't so bad! A live version with a symphonic orchestra. The adaptation with other instruments made me find the song a little better. But all the same, it was hard.
There are very good moments, the score is good, but these sounds ... definitely, it's too much for me.
Thanks to this space and to his master to exist. This time we are not agree at all, butd it is also what makes it interesting.

Thank you. I, too, find Metheny's music to be a mixed bag, leaving me in a love/hate relationship with him. I'm not sure what annoys me at times, but maybe I'll just say the closer it is to traditional jazz, the better it shines; the closer it gets to New Age mood music, I'm outta there.

This guy is a wonderful musician. His name is pronounced Muh-THEE-nee. I bet you would love his album Still Life Talking and also a record called One Quiet Night. But Pat is a busy, active working musician and has probably released 30 albums.
I hear ya on weightless. What a fine observation.

@@JustJP I got curious and looked up his discography. It's over 40 albums. He is magnificent. And he tours. I saw him in Philly with drummer Jack DeJohnette in the 90s and I also saw him in Chandler, Arizona a few years ago. Another song you may enjoy by him: Roof Dogs.

Don’t feel bad about mispronouncing Pat’s name. I’ve been mispronouncing Zeppelin’s song title, “D’yer Maker, as “Die-er Maker” for 40 years until I was corrected...and of course laughed at.

I love your reaction to this tune and your ideas about it. It brings me back to the first time I listened to it two decades ago. This is my all-time favourite piece of music, I've listened to it thousands of times since, about on average once every day of my life, and it always amazes me. The interlude that comes in around the 7 minute mark (written by Lyle Mays) is my favourite part of the tune, especially because of those drums you mention. On their 2002 tour, Richard Bona played that drum part in a new way that really touched me. This section of the tune was likely inspired by a movement from Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" called "Dance of the Earth": ruclips.net/video/3cCa2y4iX68/видео.html
If you don't know "The Rite of Spring", that's a piece of music you need to know, but it's a long one. If you've seen Star Wars, John Williams lifted a section from it for the score.

Whatever you listen to next, DON'T listen to Zero Tolerance for Silence. I'm a big Metheny follower and have seen him live several times, but to this day I don't know what the meaning of this album is. Definitely recommended is Still Life (Talking) with the amazing Third Wind.

Hubert Van Calenbergh - agreed. I am an enormous fan of Pat, but I can’t stomach ZTFS at all. However, I like that it exists at all because it shows the depth of his bench (to use a sports metaphor). Agreed on the Still Life album, but my go-to is Minuano.

@@jimbricker4982 That was one of the three pieces I had to do for my last guitar exam! Admittedly, the fast syncopated bit halfway through was dropped, but I was allowed my own solo. It also helped that I was accompanied by the teachers (bass, drums and piano) who are ace players.

Not to be anal about it, but his last name is pronounced Meth-eenee. I hope since you've listened to this you decided to dive into the world of Pat. He has so much great music that would likely take you on a musical journey.
