I've been having this issue (intermittently running on one cylinder then kicking back on) For 6 months now and have had brought the machine in twice without them being able to figure out what's wrong with it... And now I believe I have found my answer, thank you!!!
A friend of mine has the same problem - just getting worse - gonna do a coil replacement - he has the “ module “ type - May have to go with the “ upgrade “ - since the machine is 10 years old- might just as well replace both of them .
I just wanted to thank you for this great how to video. I just converted my older Exmark which has the same kohler engine which was suffering from the same issue. You made it much easier to understand than the instructions did. Thanks again
So let me get this straight - Kohler sells you a problem, then they sell you a kit to fix their problem when they should fix it themselves at no charge... smfh
Hope you got the latest parts. Kohler is now on the third go round for these coils/engines. Replaced mine on a Gravely and it was fine for about a year. Now when it is cold, it drops a cylinder until warmed up. Then all is fine. So one of these days, I expect to have to pull the cover again and replace them. At least Gravely didn't put anything in the way so the shroud can come completely off.
Very good video. This will help a lot of people do the mod. I use an old business card to set the coil gap. I have gotten static about that so I measured it the last time i did it and the business card measures 10 th. (perfect) I think what bothers the folks commenting is that a business card could be different thickness. So the solution would be to check them, for thickness.
I like using a business card but for this machine with everything being so hard to get at I wanted to make sure it was right. I did check my business card for this job and it was .015" too big did not want to risk it.
The engine shut down delay is caused by not having a ground connection on the ignition switch that is connected to the white wire on the coil. The older 12v system shut off the engine by cutting voltage. The new upgrade requires it to be grounded to shut down.
I have this same toro...2010 model with apparently coils that need replacing as it does the same thing...loses power after it runs 5-10 minutes and shows a weak spark on the left cylinder. Had a heck of a time identifying the engine because the flap under the seat rubbed the writing of the engine specs off the barcodes....really a cruddy place to put the barcodes or a bad place to put the rubber flap by Toro to hit the labels like that. In any event, had to call the Kohler engine facility in Wisconsin and tell the lady all I had to go by was it was a Kohler Command 27 sp to get the kit you have listed. The Toro facility could only tell me it was a 2010 model and had no specs on the engine. I know it was hard to use camera with the horizontal engine, but it would have been nice to see the actual work happening....still appreciate the video very much.
I just traded for CH730 in a Lincoln Ranger GXT welder. This engine is running on one cylinder only. Both cylinders have 150 pressure. And both cylinders have blue spark. The non firing cylinder had had bent puck rod. I replaced that and the valves move freely. When I try to run that cylinder it is backfiring through the carb. Do you have any videos on this topic? Thanks and new subscriber !
I’m in the middle of doing this job right now and while I appreciate nearly all RUclips instructional vids posted by individuals trying to help this one misses a few points. That plastic fan for example has four spacers, 4 washers, 2 gaskets along with the four long bolts. The flange this poster removed one bolt to pivot needs to be removed on both sides. Another 4 bolts (each side). Anyway the vid makes it look like a snap. It’s not. You’ve got a half a days work ahead of you. Maybe less if you use power tools. I’ve got an old school rachet. A droplight is helpful. Clean your oil cooler if you get that far. Mosquito repellant if you’re working outside. Sunscreen too. Pray I get this back together in this life. It’d be nice if I don’t have extra hardware left over. Really special if it runs.
more than 1 issue here? the 2004 25hp kohler command had the 1 weak coil problem and carburetor shut off solenoid gets sticky. if this one's newer it might have adjustable rockers
Seems like the engine is not being shut off by the kill wires, but by the carb solenoid causing the delay. Are there diodes inline with the kill wires to the coils? They may be bad, but I would think the engine wouldn't start to begin with. Maybe the kill wires aren't hooked up properly.
I would think, your 1 second delay turning off, after key is in off position is when fuel solenoid closes and carburetor empties out to avoid backfiring out the exhaust, like old style ignition systems do. Just my thoughts, let me know. Thanks
Thank you for your time. Well done. Am going over so many patch. jobs it's not funny. Need to rewire the whole thing. Nothing connect ed. Need a diagram? Thanks!
I got a walker mower. Its got kohler ch20 engine. Misfiring at high rpm and has bad misfire on idle took the carb off twice to clean it completely. Was thinking of changing the fuel pump but im starting to think its a bad coil. The carb solenoid was getting me alittle nervous too but im pretty sure it would be way worse and when i dissembled it it looked fine. I think im testing coils later.
I have a CH23 and I have a strange ticking sound come on after about 15 minutes of cutting. Thinking coils. Used 2 inline spark testers today and all looked good and mower started on 1st crank unlike all season 6-8 cranks? Not sure what is going on. Solenoid?
FYI, this entire engine can be removed in minutes, and makes this repair much easier. You can do it on your bench, or just slide it rearward in the engine bay for easier access.
How about a video showing how to do this......I have the same problem now with my 2014 Z Master 700 hours on it, has been kept clean and serviced.....now runs a few minutes and loses power....in researching this, I believe it is the same problem. Trying to get the local dealership to do anything in midst of the covid mess is not possible
I’m replacing the coils that already has the updated coil but one is dead. I don’t need the entire kit just the coils cause the wire is already hooked up correct. The part number for the one I thank are the same is 325 8406 s. I hope these coils will work on the command 27sp. Do you have any idea if these coils are the same. I saw the kit just don’t wanna pay the extra $60 for the wire
Agreed send in the old parts for the new and keep good customers. May work that way if you are a Kohler or Toro dealer, might be if you had wrote them they might have supplied the parts?
Great video Bob I hate it when they put a horizontal engine in a zero turn mower seems to make a lot of things harder to work on Is that an older toro I didn't think they were still using horizontal engines on their zero turns. that is weird how one cylinder would drop out like that. Tell the little guy hello and we love him and are still praying for him. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!
Yup the Horizontal engines are harder to work on for sure. But the horizontal engines are know to hold oil better on hills than vertical engines, so they are a good choice on a zero turn. This is the only issue I have every had with this engine. 550 hrs.
I have that style coil on my raptor. One cylinder was intermittent to fire, bought s new coil and same problem, realized if I unplugged the white wire from the coil that was not firing it would instantly start firing? Any help appreciated
I have the same engine 2012 Toro 27 HP Kohler Command - the other day i was using the lawn mower and then out of nowhere i lose power in my blades and when i turn the blades on it takes a minute to power up. then when i try to mow the it barely moves with the blades on. Is this a bad cylinder?
To hell with the E.P.A.! The more they mess with what works and that's not broken A former old school outdoor power equipment tech. I feel sorry for you new techs.
amzn.to/2JrDoav This is my bosch great from small engine. amzn.to/2sBhC9H This is my Milwaukee a bigger set. Either of these are perfect. I have both sets and use them interchangeably.
The shutdown delay could be because the carburetors shut off is the only part working. The shut-off to the coils may not be functioning and I'm wondering like somebody else's talking if they're are some failed diodes evolved here
I have a Kohler 750 EFI in an Intimidator when it gets hot it loses power and starts spitting and spurting. Changed the throttle body fuel pump o2 sensor and map with no luck. Any help? Maybe a coil?
Why don't they just replace the coils with hall effect sensors and use common coils you would find on something like a GM LS engine? You could mount the coils in a better spot for future service.
I have a 05 dixie that starts runs drives but when I engage blades it loses a little power then when I go to cut it bogges down to almost nothing when I stop it goes back to more power then I move forward it cuts but barely running
interesting that the repair is reverting to old technology.... the reason for the delay is that wiring harness for the coils has a diode,or should. briggs are known for the diode harness going bad which can cause running on one cylinder or not being able to turn off
I am familiar with diodes there should not be a delay as far as I know, but I do think that it is an electrical component such as rectifier or regulator?
I have a 2004 Z-Master w/27hp Kholer Command. I only have 450hrs runtime (home use only). I'm having an intermittent shut down problem (but it starts right back up). It's worse on inclines. I replaced the fuel pump & filter, spark plugs and it did not help. I was leaning towards electrical switches or ignition. Do you think I have defective coils? It's sometimes sputters and oscillates before it shuts down. Thanks!
Update, took several hours but I traced it to the 60deg tilt switch. Not sure how this goes bad but it was causing my bizarre cutting in and out problem. Bypassed it and all runs good. My ignition module (PN: 24-584-15) was not listed on the Toro Bulletin so I guess mine are ok.
I had to replace a diode on a Cub Cadet 1440 , I had to take the engine off because there was no way for the cooling shroud to go back far enough to get to the coil.
My 26hp kohler mounted on a YS4500 Sears 54" tractor started this intermittent losing a cylinder, now it's lost completely or near completely. Thanks for the video, and links on tools. Luckily mine is vertical shaft, already had the cover off for a starter rebuild. Seems to start fine, but after running 20 minutes starts losing cylinder.
One or both of the coils is most likely the problem. My neighbors have a 09 YTS4500 with a 26 hp kohler when it was newer it started running on one and would backfire while running new coils fixed it and it has ran great since. It was only a couple years old or so when it did it.
Thank you for that answer, I will be ordering new coils today. Oh, one other thing, I changed the oil and attached hose to end of yellow plastic piece for oil changes....well, I turned and gently pulled out to open plastic valve to release oil..... Oh it released all right, all over the brand new concrete floor. Plastic piece broke apart, so, went up to hardware store and converted to metal pipe for oil changes. Par for the course as they say.....
@@sleepingwiththedog eh your better off with your conversion long as you fixed it to not leak it doesnt matter if you have a briggs kohler or kawasaki or whatever with those yellow quick easy oil drains they always leak oil some people have even lost thier motors because of those drains. The engine shut down delay is caused by not having a ground connection on the ignition switch that is connected to the white wire on the coil. The older 12v system shut off the engine by cutting voltage. The new upgrade requires it to be grounded to shut down.
Make sure that the red wire going to the solenoid on the carburetor is turning off and on with the key and you don’t have a constant 12 V
It aint that it's prolly the kill wires not grounding the coils. Bad install
