🤣 I thought i was the only geek that did this with picks! 🤣 I have never tried the loomis or the Dava neon green but already know from past picks i have tried that i would not like them. I seem to always come back to the Jazz III XL, they are the standard black Jazz III but normal size. Used the original Black Jazz III's for years then for whatever reason wanted that pick but normal size. Prob solved with the Jazz III XL. I also really like a pick by V picks called the "pearly gates screamer" I really can blaze with them but they are over $5 each 😱 that is the cost of a pack of strings! The Dava reds are real good too. Something that i found hilarious is i no longer can use a traditional pick like a Fender heavy.
I also recently went through a pick re-evaluation process, where I transitioned from the Dunlop Jazz III XL to the Dunlop Jeff Loomis Signature. Prior to the Jazz III XL, I used the Dunlop Purple Tortex 1.14mm for many years. They are all good picks, all standards in the guitar community, and I would recommend any of them. The Loomis pick however, was the most difficult pick to adapt to that I have ever experienced. It is a large pick, very stiff, very pointy, and the raised texturing does enhance grip. It took me an uncertain month to get comfortable with it. Finally it clicked in place, and the geometry and precision of this pick became organic and indispensable to me, and directly enabled developing increased proficiency. They are a bit costly, and the sharp tips eventually round over, but worth the investment. Cheers~
I left all the picks save the red dava and my ultex jazz III's at my bass player's joint. No reason to make my life harder. I always come back to the ultex.
I started using the Ernie Ball Prodigy’s but have since made the swap to the Jazz IIIs. The only advantage I found with the Prodigy’s is I personally find they’re easier to hit pinch harmonics and can pick slide/ scrape better. But Jazz IIIs all the way now.
Doug, you turned me into Jazz III's probably 3-4 years ago, and it changed my playing & took me to the next level. I'd been playing with Fender Medium tortoise picks for years and this was a game changer for me. I'd like to thank you again for that! Still learning!
I bought the Jeff loomis sharp picks recently (the black one), it has great amount of attack and clarity. However, I'm just not very used to these kind of sharp picks. For me it is very good for rhythm, but it feel kind of stuck between strings when playing lead. I used to use jazz iii XL stiffo picks and I'm not a experienced player so i think part of the reason is my picking technique is not very good. But i think it has a good potential so definitely worth trying it out
It's hard to beat the Jazz III's. So many similar picks, all different materials and sizes but nothing quite competes. I really prefer the XL Jazz III's, the bigger pick feels more comfortable in my opinion. The ultex and the normal black ones are my go to. I tried a red one and it felt like sandpaper lol.
I have used so many different brands over the years, starting with the purple 1.14s, to swiss picks, teh pointy ones, then to chicken picks which are fairly expensive at 9 dollars a picks, starting with the round ones, to the shredder, then finally the bermuda pointy, then to boutique picks from iron age, then to V picks, and weirdly back to swiss picks, I highly recommend those, theres jason becker ones, rusty cooley ones, and they have their own jazz ones too, I prefer a bigger pick personally, around 3.5 mil.
The black Ultex Jazz III 2.0 mm has the perfect shape, thickness, and feel. They would be my dream pick but they are unusuable due to their tinny sound. Can't play anything clean on it, even stuff like Metallica's One intro. I tried bevelling them but not even that can bring the mids back. It's all treble. Still have to try the Prodigy Mini 2.00 and the Jazztone 205. Since Jazz III are too thin, I switched to Ibanez JTC picks. I would recommend them. Great size, 2.5 mm, 26.5mm length, and good longevity. Not as durable as Ultex but really nice for a mass-produced pick. Of course it's not a Chicken, V, Gravity, etc. Can't find many videos about the JTC and feel that people sleep on them
Dude, I have about 5 of these, they are NUTS. Wouldn't use it live, but I'd warm up with it for sure: www.timber-tones.com/jazz-tones-black-horn-1-guitar-pick-205-p.asp
The problem for the tortex version is the grip... After two songs if you are the kind of guy to sweat a bit there is the chance that you see your pick passing in front of your face during the show 😅

The red ones are thin..I think those are the Eric Johnson ones.

Yeah, I think I had V picks as well.
