- "I always try to think a little bit out of the box. A little to the left. Everyone does 4/4, 4/4." Watch metal guitar legend Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe dive into his early inspirations, his creative process, and how he gets his signature tone with Ernie Ball strings.
String Theory is a web series from Ernie Ball that explores the sonic origins of some of music's most innovative players.

"they called me up for an audition and i went over there and i actually auditioned them.." Fucking legend man!!!
When I was first playing in bands, my mother told me the same thing. She said, "Make sure that they are good enough to play with you, as much as you want to be in their band. Don't waste your time on guys who aren't good." The funny thing, now that I think about it, was one of the songs they played for the audition was Looks That Kill.
Yep, and he drops the bomb with irony and wit so he doesn't sound like an asshole AT ALL!
The man's got class!
Carrying an entire band for 40 years is the real reason his back is fucked up.
@@soundguyor I auditioned for a band way back in Germany, just for fun, but this was also the first cover we played as part of that audition.
Man came to this video expecting sht, this guy is a tone monster, that sound is massive
His bones are literally fusing together, yet he's still going out there and shredding it. Dude's a god.
I read an article that Mick may get surgery to be able to turn his head. He explained it as them chipping away the bone. He said it would eventually grow back, but it would give him some yrs. (idk how invasive it would be tho 😕). I’d love for him to be able to drive again, if only for a little while. But honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Mick roll out on stage in some bad-ass revised standing wheelchair in the future. ❤️
Right!!! Most underrated guitarists of all time...
Absolutely agree.
LOL! God? LOl!
He dosen't realise it either! You are wicked talent Mick!
I don’t know of ANY other band where the guitarist is the most underrated musician in the band. And he’s easily the most talented member.
Do you know why? Because he's not underrated he just sucks. Guitar players always grab a ton of attention in rock/ metal bands. They usually make solo albums to express things they can't in their band. But even if they don't, they are right up there with singers as being focal points of the band. Except with MC it wasn't like that. It was all about the other 3 guys. Because Mars had nothing going for him. Why do you think Nikki was always looking to replace him? I believe he approached Demartini and Lynch, among others because they could really play, not just use the same tired blues scales for every fucking "solo". And because they had "the look" that fit much better with the band. Why do you think Mars was always on the end of the line in band pics? Cause half of their success was the look of Nikki. Tommy and Vince. That's what the teenaged girls wanted not Mars.
He was NEVER, NOT ONCE, included in any list of great guitar players of the 80s or any other time, as far as everything I've read in 30 years. If you like him that's fine. But let's not create a rock guitar hero from a guy who his own band wanted gone.

Looks That Kill. First video I saw of them on MTV.
He’s responsible for Crue’s success. His guitar playing wasn’t just technical and with feeling, he is a fantastic riff master and composer. Mick Mars guitar playing is special.
Eric Rios I agree with you, to a point. Nikki Sixx wrote the tunes, lyrics and general direction of the music.
totally agree, his sound what turned my ears to the bands music. this guy is different, always an unexpected hook. pretty much made crue into what they are imo.
Totally. Never cared much for his solos. But as a metal riff master, and songwriter, hell yes. Up there with Iommi that way.
I agree. Always see myself playing air guitar to his songs in motley crue. His riffs are original and simple but cool and unique
As a former musician myself I’d like to say that every member was just as important.Being super successful like them is something where every single thing matters from the members involved, the creativity that comes from those 4 members being together and the right management. Mick and Sixx were definitely the more creative minds from what we know. Even if Vince never wrote one lyric he brought his voice, stage performance and looks which is huge, tommy brought amazing drumming ability yeah other drummers can easily play his stuff but those drummers wouldn’t have played the same memorable stuff. If it was just mick and Sixx I bet they definitely could have been successful but not on the level that the Crüe became.
This is something a lot of people don’t think about or understand unless you are a musician yourself and many musicians make this mistake. Often when you have 4 members in a band everyone argues when creating music, that arguing creates tension and generally better music. When bands kick out members over creative differences they then get members that don’t put up a fight when creating mucus or they just use touring musicians. Well now that they always get their way when creating music the music tends to suffer and be too tame. This isn’t always the case but it happens a lot then the members realize that they need those members they fired because they help give the songs attitude and emotions. Some changes that seem relatively small can change a band completely.

“I know I’m gonna lose some fans”
Mick..... you will NEVER lose fans. I cannot believe that came out of his mouth!! Your are an absolute GOD!
I get where he's coming from. I mean look at what happend when John Corabi stepped in, and the album didn't do so well. Also because they wanted Vince back. But they didn't like the change, a lot of the fans found it too "heavy". Some fans can't stand change somehow and will always compare it to their old stuff. The album with John Corabi is one of my favorite albums if not my favorite. And I think if they would have brought the album out under a different band name the album would have done better.
Man don't let the Crue define your style. The stuff I heard on this video that I haven't heard before was awesome.

He always seemed to me to be the quiet member of Motley compared to the other 3 in the band but without Mick, they were nothing.
I think he wasn`t joking when he said: "I auditioned them"...Since he already had played in a number of bands since the early 70`s...
No doubt.
Mick was the cruest of them all.
He is also older
It was Nikki's punk and glam rock influences and Mick's traditional 60's guitar hero influences (Beck, Page, Clapton, etc.) that made the Crue the Crue. I love Mick, but another man was needed to create that Crue sound and attitude. And when Mars says he auditioned "them," he wanted to see that they weren't some kind of joke band. There were so many skinny tie bands like the Knack in L.A. at the time. Mick hated that crap. Another thing that separated the Crue from the joke bands that followed the Crue like Poison, Cinderella, etc.,, were the lyrics. For every song like "Ten Seconds To Love" there was "Danger." For every tune like "Girls, Girls, Girls," there was "Primal Scream." Nikki's lyrics, unlike so many hair metal groups of the 80's, addressed serious subjects.
The world needs more Mick Mars...

I've looked up to this Man for years and years! He is THE BEST GUITARIST THAT EVER PLAYED imo. I was completely devastated when I learned he had AS (Ankylosing Spondylitis), a name a knew all too well. My beloved Uncle had it. Then one day we were told our middle daughter had AS. My Uncle had passed the year before she was diagnosed (@15yrs old), I was way too young to remember the early years of when he had AS. I took a big chance and reached out to Mick. Maybe he could give me some advice on how to help her as best as possible. I was blown away when I seen I had a reply. Mick not only responded within 2 hours of me sending my message to him, he gave me the best advice in helping her. My love for this man grew deeper. Mick is truly a badass and that is still an understatement. Mick Mars is possibly one of the most underrated guitar players ever.
Whenever people talk about "Best 80s Guitar Players" they only say guys like Kirk Hammet, Dave Mustaine, or Jeff Hanneman. They are indeed great guitar players in their own right, but Mick Mars I believe deserves to be mentioned more in the conversation of greatest metal guitar players ever. His riffs are memorable and he is a damn good solo shredder. His guitar added a sense of danger, edge, and grit to Motley Crue that many glam metal bands lacked.
I couldn't agree more. Truly never seems to get enough credit for his mad skills and great sound.
I guess because Motley Crue were glam, Mick is never given enough credit. Same goes for Warren DeMartini of Ratt and George Lynch of Dokken
@@metalhammer5 That is unfortunate, despite some cringey artists, Glam had some genuine talent and great artists that came from that era. Same for nu metal or metalcore/post hardcore.

Mick is probably the most underrated guitarist I know of! I’ve loved his sound and creativity since the Dr. Feelgood record. Much like some of his heroes (Clapton, Beck, Hendrix) his tone changes with each record and I can’t wait to see what he come up with next!
Shaun Matthews i always said his playing was overlooked by nikki and vince. mick is my favorite player, i names my strat 1313 after him
That true, I've never heard of him
Mick and C.C. DeVille. Were and probably still are two of the most underrated guitarists from their time. Even Nuno Bettencourt was when he was with Extreme. These lead singers get all the attention and steal away the respect and recognition these guitar players deserve.
I'm really not a fan of the big hair metal bands but some of these guitarists were and are incredible....I just wish they would come out and do solo projects like so many other greats like Marty Friedman.
Wow....I didn't even watch the whole video even I mentioned the solo project and 30 seconds later he said he is going to release one.....that will be awesome.
His live sound is amazing, he has a rig rundown video that shows everything he uses. Truly underrated player
I also have ankylosing spondylitis like him. He is a true inspiration.
Deniz M same here! Mick is an inspiration to keep following my dreams. That this is just a bump in the road.
I got it too and with the Indiana weather rain and damp fucks my joints up
To Deniz M - I suffer from the same thing. It never stops, seldom lets up. I can’t imagine how Mick stands on stage as long as he does, nor how he plays so well. Amazing!
Yeah Michael I take embrel shots but I've had it scents 1998 so I think it's not working as well cause it going in my right wrist to my thumb and licks are fucker up at all yet they got hi. On some good drugs
Ryan, I am gonna take my Enbrel shot today! :) We are still lucky to have Enbrel. Before the latter, my life was a mess because of the constant pain. The pain is relatively under control nowadays. Stay strong my friend.
This man can play a riff exactly how it was on the album.
Probably because they're HIS riffs... What a stupid comment. lol
@@ShutTheMuckUp not so stupid having mind bands like dragon force
Please never stop going “another further”, dearest Mick...Who cares about the response anyway? Looking forward to your Music. Lots of love from Italy.
Is it just me or does he look a lot better in here with his condition and all? Wish you all the best Mick!
I was thinking the same thing.
SuhariPelaa he does look better
It's probably cause he doesn't have to deal with immature fuckers like his bandmates anymore.
Looks worse. Cant even bend his neck.
It might be since he's inside more so his eyes aren't in pain from the light? And maybe he's been relaxing a lot more too
Been a huge fan of Mars for 32 years. When Decadence came out in ‘91, Nikki and Mick were on the radio and I’ll never forget Mick said he’s never been on the cover of a magazine by himself. The DJ said no way that can’t be true. And Mick said you show me one bud. Truth is, he probably still hasn’t. People didn’t started speaking highly of Mick until he came out in their autobiography the Dirt and admitted his back was fucked up. Personally, I hope he lives forever. His music certainly will.
Motley fan since the 80s here, around the time Girls came out, I used to buy the metal magazines every week, or month, and I remember one of those magazines mentioning that he had Ankyolosing Spondylitis. Don't remember which one, but I didn't know what his condition was (no internet yet), just it was a strange name.
I'm a bit late with a reply but I have the Guitar World issue June 2014 where he is the only one on the cover. Not sure if it's his first or not, but he finally made it for their farewell tour.
One of the first guitarist I started learning how to play guitar on. Hard to believe he’s still playing, but glad he is! My health is going to shit now, but he gives me the inspiration to continue to play. Thanks Mick!!
The silent shredder!!! 1313 Long live the Mars Man!!!!! Love that dude!
Never really paid much attention to Motley Crue because all the drama in their personal lives, especially Tommy Lee. It was a turn off to me. Having said that, I definitely have a new found respect to Mick. He is definitely the real deal.
Mick is the only reason I ever enjoyed Motley Crue and I didn't realize it until I saw their "farewell" tour when Vince was singing in tongues.
Same ! Mick is the only reason i like them . Sixx and Tommy are pukes .
@@SJ-ty5rw Nikki Sixx is at least 50% more tolerable than Tommy Lee.
@@omgvague He is somewhat more tolerable . But what's annoying is he tries .. to pass himself off as intelligent ! in interviews like Larry king etc . Then he jumps on stage with a backpack filled with spit ! at shows , and spits into the crowd . That speaks volumes about his intelligence lol Vince to me is still way more likeable than Sixx lol
@@SJ-ty5rw If Vince could even speak English now, you might have a point. Vince is struggling much harder than Nikki though. Sure, Nikki is a douche, they're all douches except Mick, but Nikki could at least sing the songs better than Vince right now.
Tommy just plays enough to get through the songs. I don't think his heart is in Motley Crue anymore. That's why he made Methods of Mayhem.
I heard Motley Crue jam for 3 hours (after the Scorpions had just jammed for 3 hours) and this guy!!!! His intro to Home sweet Home was about 5 to 8 minutes and it was absolutely divine! One of the most beautiful guitar moments I've had the pleasure of hearing. Ahhhh Mick.
Brandon Munson I saw that same tour. Both bands were on fire.
I want to hear that...
He keeps getting better as time goes on he can play in so many different old styles and new. I always had a great time listening to him play live
He sums up perfectly why I love guitar so much. I've been playing for nearly 30 years, and I still learn new things almost every day. The guitar is a constant companion and friend.
2:34 I started doing that finger drag during my first year of guitar intuitively, and my guitar teacher was blown away. He had never hear it. But I can now say Mick also does this.
Is there a technical term for that kind of style of picking or is it just at random?
Classical players do this, specifically flamenco players.
I believe it’s called, picado.

@@kristiangenge7773 if it is an actual piece then I don’t know. It could just Mick being awesome. Haha

So much underrated musician!!!!!!!
He is one of the greatest rock riff composers, IMHO.
Calm down.
He honestly just got lucky.
Quit overreacting.
Lucky, really? It´s a shame that his band was noticed more for clothes and private lives than for the music itself. He did compose some hard rock gems. Great riffs. The best musician overall in the band (I am not the biggest Motley Crue fan, but they do have great songs).
I am a guitar player myself, Is he a guitar idol? Not.
Is he a great musician and composer? Way above average? On his style and niche? IMHO yes.
Let´s just peacefully agree to disagree!
You're right! I love Mick Mars/Crue songs, he wrotes the best riffs along with the others members!

The People: "Strats aren't for metal"
Mick: "Change those shitty pickups!"
You’d be surprised what you can do with single coils
Active single coils sound better.
Godzilla Simpson I’ve never in my life seen an active single coil
@@someone___1240 EMG makes them. I have one in my Ibanez.
They still have the thin sound of a single coil but they are somewhat more versatile. For example david gilmour used emg active single coils. Look them up and you'll be suprised.
His playing always had that cool “growl” sound that I just couldn’t figure out. I can’t think of another player who has it. I’ve tried different amp and distortion combos but I guess and they say “it’s all in the fingers “
Jeff Stanford i think that it is the Mick playing style, huge amount of different amps, handmade pickups and hotrodded amps
Yeah you can definately hear Micks tone change a bunch from the early crüe albums to the later ones. For Dr. Feelgood they had a full wall of amps that they used to get as big of a sound as possible. And when they ran out of the marshalls they even took the clean Fender amps and stuck screwdrivers through them to make them distorted😂 just a fun fact
I tried recreating that Harley engine growl of his guitar. I think you can get pretty close by using a fender strat(prefferably with humbuckers, but mine has single coils) with a marshall amp on pretty high gain, but not max, and a distorsion pedal also with pretty high gain. It sounds close and i can hear that growl and that "sparkle" that 80s guitars had.
One of the things he does is instead of stringing his guitar normally, he basically puts two e strings instead of a normal sixth and fifth string, and then tunes it up to normal, but that string thickness gives the guitar a much heavier sound. so basically get a pack of ten gauge and get an extra e string.
First Last thanks! l like that idea. I think l will give it a try. Ive recently been using a wound g on my Acoustics and l am really liking it. I know most seem to prefer an unwound G, but l like the feel and especially the sound. And l am actually wanting to try it on my electrics.
Thanks for the great idea!
I always thought of Mick as a heavy metal Chuck Berry- some of the most memorable riffs in modern rock n roll. No matter what he plays, it sticks in your head- that's what separates him from most of his peers.
This is so great to see! I don’t think I have ever seen him speak on camera in all the years I’ve been following his band. I bought the first album right when it came out.
I’m happy to see him working and pushing forward. He is an inspiration.
Go Mick!

Hell yeah! I love how all his influences fused together to help him create his style. One of my favorite guitarist of all time. Excellent song writer.
Excellent video EB! Very inspiring to hear Mick commenting on his work; great tone! Thanks!
A beast of a guitar player. This video made me want to pick up a Strat again...
Fantastic video. Mick is still the man and his sound is fantastic. He was the backbone of Crue as his playing was awesome. Can't wait for the new music.
Mick, "The other side of Mars" is amazing record. It was well worth the wait!
Huge Respect for Mick, never any drama, always on top of his game as a player, older wiser and has been around long enough to be inspired by all the greats, an awesome guitarist in his own right, looking forward to hearing his solo project, I have a feeling it will be more of a Blues based hard rock sound from which he was schooled.
So many great riffs played by Mick. Friggin awesomeness. Mick Rocks.👍

1 of my guitar heroes
For true.
Mick Mars is THE MOST underrated guitarist. So cool to feature him on here. I wish there more videos like this, about him. The only thing that sucked about this video was it was too short.
When I first heard of MC, I just assumed they were a 5 piece. A drummer, a bassist, the singer, and a rhythm and lead guitar. I remember seeing my first Crue music video and asking my best friend, "Where's the fifth guy?" Mr. Mars is AMAZING! I honestly didn't know one guitar could make all those sounds. The beginning of Kickstart My Heart is UNREAL! That's Library of Congress preservation shit! In famous bands with only one guitar player, he is right up there with Hendrix, Clapton when he was in Cream, and Eddie Van Halen. My opinion, and MUCH respect!
He’s literally amazing, I could listen to him talk all day🖤
@Rush Y'all are the damn best. I'm honored to have the kind of support that you show me, thank you. How are you doing it is nice meeting you here btw
His one hell of a guitarist that’s for sure. Mick is a big part of Motley’s sound. I forget how many big riff driven songs motley has done. Mick guitar is just a big wall of sound.
