Oh, I like this van!! Have been looking for a van or bus for several years. I have an old classic E-150. And I have a 4x4 truck. They are both okay but I don’t buy vehicles and change my mind (unless they are faulty, and then I want a replacement of the same type). Once I find what I want, I drive them several hundred thousand miles. The van has only 160k but I bought it used a year ago. I knew when I bought it that I wouldn’t keep it but it is a conversion van with a wheelchair lift that I needed that week and I got it cheap. The truck was what Husband wanted 15 years ago and loved it. Well, in a way he still does but I am the driver and not even remotely interested in jumping up and out at 0500 after a big storm to put the truck through its paces on ice under snow. So it’s no fun, anymore. It was my intent to get a bigger truck to carry a bigger camper when the time came and we turned in our beepers and office keys. Then the wheelchair came. I don’t want a big class A like the rest of the family drives to and from Florida each year, parking in the same space in the same RV Park in the same town every year. Occasionally going to a campground near their home if they get restless. Nope, no thanks. Drove in-laws back and forth for several years and understand their limitations, which are many. But every van is set up to make it hard for him to get in and out. And they are limited like the one I’ve got so why bother spending more money on the same? I saw the articulation the axles in the stock photos going over the boulders. Positraction squared! He can get in and out easy. So can I. He can turn his chair around in the passenger seat space. He can get to the bed. And the side door opens enough to accommodate the #*!& wheelchair lift. I have found my van! Enough about me. Carry on and I will contain my enthusiasm. 😁

Everyone is complaining about the price but Sportsmobile will add the pop-top to most any newer van Check out their website, it's affordable. They had to do a lot of customizing on the chassis when Ford stopped making the Econoline. You can get the 4x4 Sprinter and add the pop-top and use a WayFarer interior system. It doesn't have to be tricked out like this.

    • @Weretherussos

Exactly. This is kind of the top of the line, go anywhere vehicle.

Chevy Express is the last full-sized van manufactured. And it's not quite as large as the Econoline.

    • @BrokerBarbara119
      @BrokerBarbara119 5 лет назад +1

@@braddowns17 I would still want one if I got a Sprinter because my honey is 6'8" and it gives the extra loft area for the extra bed so grand kids could go on weekend adventures. I'm looking at the Metris or Ford Transit Connect. With the Pop top on one of those I'm almost at 8" of head room. If you're a shorter person the pop top is most likely not needed as you said.

    Looks cool.
Last year, we saw a couple from Germany that had a 4WD overlanding vehicle with HUGE tires that looked like they could traverse anything. They shipped it from Germany to South America and were driving their way up to Alaska. It literally looked like a high end tank!
    Lotto dreams.

It's funny some of the comments. What I don't think they understand is just how custom built this is!! I mean the ability to get an all wheel drive camper van into places that usually only Jeeps can go!! That's a big deal 🌟 and there's a lot of overhead probably and money put in to getting all those special parts made in the USA.
That being said, I am curious to know if the pop top could support solar panels and an AC system? Looks nice and roomy. Great idea to put commonly used items together for storage. I do that at home too. So much easier to cook and simple clean up. Can't wait to see more of your videos of this rig.

    • @Weretherussos

I can,t wait for some of the Australian off-road trailers to come to the USA. Vans are cool and all, but in my opinion a trailer is more practical for a family to use for weekend use. You can use a truck or suv for daily driving and tow the trailer on the weekend, set up a basecamp with the trailer and explore in the truck or suv with the family. These are super cool though.

For me, a pop top camper and 3/4 ton 4x4 (probably used) is better value. I used to have a Taco and it would go a lot of places. You get old and those trails start to beat you up, but I'm glad i did it. I didn't find the really rough trails necessarily led to great places. Mosquitoes have incredible off road capabilities. I know I don't need the drivetrain, but it's great people do that stuff. Great guy!

Do you own a camper/RV or just borrow? I've watched a few of your videos, seems like you borrow them for review, is there a set period?. $185,000 seems way too steep for a 4x4 van, Atlas t-case is nice but they are adaptable in a number of vehicles. $40k +. Guaranteed you'll go over budget as everyone always underestimates how much stuff costs, and you have to provide your labour, which may be free, but only if you value your time at zero dollars. If you do, you can come and help build my RV and I will pay you zero dollars. Otherwise you need to add in your labour cost, which could be $20 to $100 per hr or more, depending on your skill set.

Honestly the reason is costs 185k is because of the off roading capabilities and if you aren't going to utilize that you're really wasting your money. You can buy just a normal 4x4 camper that's small and has all the interior features of the Sportsmobile. In fact I used to have a Ford Transit 350 2wd that I was going to do a Sportsmobile conversion in and they quoted me roughly 43k for the package i was interested in. The 4wd system in that Sportsmobile is very advanced and very expensive. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome setup I just hate to see you spend that sort of money when you aren't going to take it off road and use it to it's full potential...but hey if that's what makes you happy then go for it...congrats!

@@geraldhenrickson7472 I have owned a few expensive toys over the years and this would be another great toy to own if your budget allows but it's not a home and wouldn't be a very comfortable RV. Like all vehicles it is a consumable product that loses value when you drive it off the lot and keeps on losing value.

Interesting that they decided to use leaf springs up front. I wonder if the Nevada location is due to the cost of being able to do business in California?

Thanks Paul! You know I thought about the crowd funding thing after you and a few others mentioned it and honestly I don’t like asking for money without giving something of value back. That said, if you do want to help out my new book is on sale: amzn.to/2Kymd5x and if you do make other purchases through Amazon, consider using the link in the description below. You pay the same amount and we get a small commission.

If u want a pop up why don’t u consider four wheel truck camper? Those are very well built and way cheaper. You can upgrade vehicle and still keep the camper in the future.
