I installed the same motors on my Cat but I kept the bellhousings and made an adapter plate to mount the motors. I also put both hand throttles into the same housing and got rid of the old cables. If you had taken off the flywheel it would have lightened the engine a lot. I also had to change the reverse power in the program because was not as fast as I liked. I am now working on getting the motor info on my chartplotter.
Very clean setup and love the innovative idea. I was looking at purchasing a very similar motor - a 25kw ‘Paraglider’ electric motor to put into an electric motorcycle build so it’s awesome to see you using this 10kw as an engine for the fantasia 👍
Those Paraglider 25kw motor look very interesting. The open style housing would obviously aid air flow and cooling, but you would need to filter the air. Cooling is a key thing which I will be looking at in detail in my coming videos.
Glad to see you doing this conversion .. optimising the prop size and pitch is important with e motors as they produce more torque lower down .. Ive tried persuading Mark from Wilding sailing to power his Wharram.Pahi with a couple of these in the 15kw form . Instead of 9hp two stroke outboards. I thought Golden motors only introduced the Axial flux motors recently ... and these were the radial motors. I will go back and read it again. Looking good mindyou ..theres a guy in the UK with a Heavenly twins cat with twin these motors... and it performs exceedingly well.
Hello Clive. The prop aspect is interesting, but not something I have a huge grasp on! I have been running tests and noted yesterday that the 10kw actually develops thrust faster than the 30hp diesel, which relates to this low down torque. I'd say these motors would be great on 9hp outboards.
@@AndrewStransky-cc2dr I ve just seen this I will see if I can supply you with some comparative information tomorrow.. The extra torque of electric motors puts them ahead of most ICE motors. So they can swing larger props with more blades usually. .. they are also more controllable as you don't have to rev to generate a given thrust.

Will be interesting to see the performance. I'm doing a similar thing 14m powercat, ex sail boat, initially was going to go with a 48v possibly 96v setup but have now gone with nissan leaf motors - 150hp outboard conversion and will most likely use Tesla lfp batteries.
@@ecojet8384 They come in various lengths now .. from the original long Rhino ones are half or a vehicle width to a very short briefcase length version or what looks from the outside as a prismatic.. it helps with voltage and space fit. On a boat you should have less restrictions on space. The other person who was headed down your route was a German guy converting a cat lifeboat. .. Heart of Gold 🥇 but he hasn't posted for some time. Theres a uk guy whose built a converted Al fishing cat hull with Leaf motors.. its featured in PBM.
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough but no, we have a motor in each hull. We have just converted one of them so the other 30hp diesel is still there... So we basically have a hybrid system now.
Hello Jon, I'm still happy enough with the foot throttle arrangement. It's very simple and keeps the electrics all safely away from exposure to the elements. It also manages to sync pretty nicely with the diesel motor throttle. I might change in the future though, although the issue with an electric throttle with this saildrive arrangement is that electrically changing gears doesn't work like it would for a shaft drive. The forward gear on the saildrive cant spin in reverse as the clutch lets go.I know this as when I first installed the electric motor I had it spinning the wrong direction and was very puzzled as to why the prop was barely spinning.
Not sure how happy Carolyn would have been getting engine grime on the linen during the removal process.☹. Although I am sure she will be happy about the much cleaner result.. What are the advantages of the 48v system? Such an interesting project, watched the vid 3 times now! Looking forward to the performance test results in terms of distance and run time capacity etc. Well done for now.
Haha, so much grime came out of the engine room! In this first part of the conversion you really notice how much cleaner life will be! 48v seems to be the max voltage for DIY projects. Compared to 12v the wires need only be 1/4 the size. Higher voltages do gain more efficiency though but moving to 48v was enough of a leap for me!
Amazing boat and project !Just a bit of clarification, you only had one 30hp diesel engine aboard your boat ? If so that was not much compared to what is generally offered. Has that been a problem in some windy situations ?
Thank you Fredrica! When we launched Fantasia we had 2 x 30hp diesels and never had a problem in any wind condition. At times we have had to do with only one motor and while it is possible 2 motors is definitely the way to go. So now we 1 diesel and the one 10kw electric. The 10kw electric certainly seems very much an equal to the 30hp diesel as you have perhaps seen in my other videos.

What was your reason for choosing a box-type enclosure for the motor? Is it intended to provide some type of protection against water flooding the motor, in the event of a leak?
Yes, the box enclosure is quite important . For one it distributes any loading on the saildrive over a large area, so in case of grounding the box takes the pushing load into the forward engine mounts. It means the set-up is just as strong as when a diesel was mounted there. Also as you point out it it protects the works in case of engine-room flooding. I have sealed it and the top of the box is well above the waterline and the engine bay is also sealed from the rest of the boat. Yes, I have seen Oceanvolt owners building guards in front of their saildrives which are only supported by a small radius.
Are you going to have any sort of fire suppression system on the motor or battery? Wouldn't want any sort of overheating problem or short to cause any damage.
Yes, I have 16.5 inch diameter and 13 inch pitch. 2 blade folding Gori prop. We did originally have a 17 x13 and this may well have offered a bit more thrust.
@@AndrewStransky-cc2dr yea water cooled, they are powerful enough but atm I'm using potentiometers to control them and I can't figure out how to make a dead spot in the middle so it easier to find the off position. Looking at a way to use hall effect instead and make something with levers and detents. The bought ones are either very cheaply made or extremely expensive
@@Sailingon interesting to be using potentiometers. I used the foot type throttle attached to my morse controls that the diesel used, to keep it simple. I was surprised how little travel it had when I tested the motor, but now that it is under load it is fine and the position of the lever is fairly similar to the diesel side. Yes, they are a very simple thing these throttles as I had mine apart hoping to adjust it, which lead to to trouble which I had to set it back to how it was. They just look like some kind of magnet passing over a sensor. I am quite happy with my throttle now, having made some adjustments via the EZekontrol app and a slight tweaking of the throttle insides.

Yes, 96v gives better efficiencies. I wish you good luck with this project. Plan things well and press on.
The other super safe option and easier to maintain is the Blade lfp batteries that were originally developed by BYD..
