Innocent Mutanga fled his home in Zimbabwe to Hong Kong in 2013 as a political refugee.
After at first ending up sleeping on the streets, Innocent found a way to overcome his challenges and enrol in a local university before eventually becoming the first asylum seeker to graduate from a Hong Kong tertiary institution. Now an investment banker, Innocent has been paying it forward by helping other asylum seekers process their claims in Hong Kong, which does not recognise refugee status. Innocent is also helping to raise awareness about African culture and break racial stereotypes about the community through a social enterprise he set up.

@Roz Henderson your facts are wrong. HK is indeed very expensive, but to say that to be ranked a success one needs to be a billionaire is ludicrous. If you have 100 million you are not a success? 🤨
You can get a decent apartment for HK$ 5-10 million, and you can get amazing meals for HK$ 100-200. Where did you get your numbers from? HK's real estate market is the most expensive in the world, but other than rents, other expenses are not even close to the highest in the world; they are middle of the pack.

It also accounts for nearly 75% of the world's coltan, an important mineral used in electronic devices, including cellphones. He says in the clip as verbatim "nobody is going to really help you", but in the clip SCMP narrated that "An NGO helped pay for his food, and other living expenses", can he refute that? To me this is ungrateful attitude, he should leave Hongkong and find a paradise in Europe or five-eye countries.

At 3:08 it said he "began volunteering at a church to teach English" and as a result a NGO (Non-Government Organization) gave him food and shelter. Apparently, he made the effort to help himself by going to volunteer at the church without asking for anything, and thus they were connected with the NGO, who saw his benefit and provided him with food and shelter. I didn't see anything ungrateful about his actions at all. He then put out the effort to pass high school exams and qualify to take college classes.

@@tedaspane1493 What I heard was he took the initiative to get off the bench he was sleeping on and find a church where he could help and he was the one who put out the effort. He didn't depend on the government, nor did he go begging. I think they were making off of him teaching English, so it was a fair exchange. I'm sure he would have scrubbed toilets and mopped floors, if that is what they would have needed.

@@Jibbie49 -When I was a graduate student, I volunteered as tutor for local refugee children, I didn't receive any in return. So you think you volunteer and receive "helped pay for his food, and other living expenses" is a fair exchange, no need for gratitude expressed?

@@tedaspane1493 Wow, can you sit your graduate school self down please? Stop misinterpreting his words. He said 'no one is going to really help you' as in, a lot of the work you must do on your own, despite being given aid. Yes, NAO fed him. But did they teach for him? Do all the work for him? No, he did that. Why do you come here after he works to pay it forward, then act like you had the same experience as Innocent, him being a refugee, and you volunteering as a graduate student and being "more grateful"?
