Where in the Brain Does Creativity Come From?

  • We’ve all heard the talk about left-brain versus right-brain, “Creative and innovative people are considered right-brain thinkers; analytical and logical people are left-brain thinkers.” For years neuroscientists who are skeptical have argued against this theory. They believe creativity is so complex, creativity must depend on both sides, not just one. That’s where the findings of a new National Science Foundation-funded brain-imaging study come in. See where these scientists think where in the brain creativity comes from.

Practice and persistence fueled by passion (personal meaningfulness and joy) lead to increased self-identification with creativity and reduced fear of taking risks or failing. Wonderful research reflecting lived-experience. Kudos!

This knowledge has become somewhat of a lost art. I was introduced to a book called "drawing on the right side of the brain" as a young child and I was a talented artist back then. I did the exercises in the book and even experienced feelings of intense euphoria from stimulation of the right brain as described in the book. I stopped drawing years ago and started studying math and science but also started playing guitar A LOT. I recently think I may have stumbled back into right brain euphoric experience when I play guitar and sing at the same time. It is similar as drawing because speech is also a left brain activity but music and creativity is right brained. Im not sure how to describe it but it is an incredible feeling to play and sing highly technical guitar music like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy GIbbons of ZZ Top. I think it is highly a right brain activity. I think you guys should remeasure brains but compare guitarists who play and sing vs guitarists who soley focus on playing just the notes. Playing and singing is so much harder and requires way more focus or, lack of focus as you go into a trance like state to perform at that level of brilliance.

I wonder what the findings would be if they did this research on visual artists and other creative fields??

Those studies haven't been done yet. Hopefully, the resources to do them will become available.

This is so interesting. I wonder if there are findings where what we’d expect to be reflected on the left side is reflected on the right side with time and experience. Something like scientists or surgeons reflecting more use of the creative side of the brain the more experienced they are. I imagine similar principles would apply....or would they?

Hi Bezvlel, Thanks for your interesting question. I am not aware of any research that shows a left-to-right shift. But this research is still in its infancy. Who knows what we will find?

It's not due to a difference in experience. Musicians who learn music theory (Jazz theory included) learn how to analyze music, so they think through the music more logically. Art forms like music aren't so much a "creativity" thing than it is a language. Music is a language, and works the same way as language.

Thanks for your comment. It is a difference in experience. Our highly experienced musicians didn't have any more musical training than the less experienced ones. The difference was how many public performances they had given.

No practice, no passion, no development of skills in any area of life.
