    i think the reason why creativity is unfortunately becoming more and more rare is that there are too many distractions in life these days, an over abundance of things to consume. And when you are spending too much tine in consumption mode, you never develop those creative muscles and if you already built them, they will slowly wither away when not used.

    • @mandlin4602
      @mandlin4602 2 года назад +17

      Nah I think it’s because society at every point doesn’t value it enough. From a young age school teaches the importance of rules. EVERYTHING is rule based, even how they teach art is based on fitting things in boxes.
      Then you go to work and again most of it is rules and putting things in boxes.
      It’s why dyslexia is associated with creativity, it’s not because dyslexic people are born more creative they are born unable to think the way the system insists we all think. And have to be creative to survive.

    This hits close home. I've been trying to make a videogame for over a year and noticed I can only progress by working on it and failing on the process. Some weeks it makes me feel like sh*t because I keep looping on the same problems over and over, I get frustrated and instead of working I stop to think, but it never helps, the only way is to keep trying.

    You absolutely have to give yourself an opportunity to come up with junk. I used to write down 10 ideas a day, 9 of them were pure trash, but it was worth it to get that 1 good idea!

    I was surprised by the fact that I had meditated on these topics before this video and had the same conclusion with only different wording. And some of these even work in self-improvement if you reword them. 1. permission to fail 2. reiterate old thoughts based on new information 3. be open to combine all you know, art, physics, chemistry 4. force yourself to see things from a teachers perspective and contemplate how you would teach it to someone with limited theory. 5. the fewer unknowns you have in the process, the more accurate your prediction of the end result is. 6. goof around with any and all ideas. Jules Verne was the science fictionist of his time, and now his fiction is reality. Most scientific discoveries are by accident but with the ability to explain what has transpired, OR a really over the top idea that might not be in the realm of possibility but the even the dead end road might still have a few lessons to give.

    this video is what i needed to hear, it feels like i have been stuck in a creative block for months, but creativity is my passion, it’s how i thrive so it’s obviously quite bothersome to feel like it’s so out of reach. this may be due to some mental health obstacles and a huge fear of failure i’m trying to overcome, but this video gives some good perspective, it reminds me that there’s ways to nourish my creative brain again and i can work through this with time

    I struggle balancing the old adage “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is insanity” with the idea that you have to storm through failure after failure to get to something that is great.

    • @hi-gf5yl
      @hi-gf5yl 4 года назад +4

      Dudadius you’re making the assumption that you fail the same way but there’s many ways to fail. As long as you try something slightly different each time, then you aren’t insane because doing a different thing doesn’t necessarily guarantee success.

    This reminds me of the Warren Buffett method of goal-setting. Make a list of 10 things you want to achieve in the next . Rank them by importance/feasibility. Remove the bottom seven and forget about them, because you can't achieve that many things at the same time. Focus on the top 3 and formulate a plan to accomplish your goals. Letting go of those bottom 7 things, even though they are important to you, is the "what you don't put in your art is what matters" section of this video.

    While I agree that people can learn to be more innovative or creative and agree that "creative" people exist in any field, I don't think a person can "learn" to be creative in personality, because for many of us, it is an innate quality. We are drawn to the creative arts in the ways that others aren't. That passion can't be learned. A few people look at a setting and want to paint or photograph it, but many don't feel compelled to at all. (Yes, I realize that Einstein was uber-creative in his way, I would think that a scientific study would require order and consistency except maybe in the first stages. In any case, beyond a certain point, we're comparing different kinds of thinking and knowledge gathering. If everyone is "creative," then no one is.)

    This video makes a lot of good points, but the conclusion is incomplete IMO. "Quantity breeds Quality" is not the full story. Quantity helps you find the seed of something awesome, but once you find that seed, you don't instantly have something of quality. Quality requires pausing your quantity mindset and turning toward a more nurturing and explorative mindset in order to grow that seed into something of high quality. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Many people skip this step and ship the seed, or a half-watered seed, instead of truly polishing it into something great after it has been discovered. But you can't just polish the first thing you encounter, so the quantity step at the start is also very important.

    Resisting all criticism is dumb, this will lead to delusional thinking and narcissism. You have to be your own critic, only allow the very best through the creative process and nothing less.

    There is world of difference between _Creative Junk_ and _Creative Genius_
    Throwing paint at a canvas is not creative. Having the skill to paint a _Mona Lisa_ is.
    The difference is having the *intelligence to identify a good idea* and ability to make it happen.
    It's easy to be a Creative Genius all you need is Intelligence, Inquisitiveness, Intuition, Analytical Thinking, Vast Knowledge, Practical Skills, Belief and Persistence.

    hmm Chuck Close is technically really great but most definitely one of the least inspiring artists out there.His works lack complete imagination and so he justifies it by saying inspiration is for amateurs.. He just uses his tools masterfully to create a copy of reality. I wouldn't consider that creative because it is almost the same of what a machine can do. So in that sense the argument of the schedule is not to be taken as 'too 'valid. However for sure you need to put in the work, but it has to be a balance
