There were about 7-8 years in the 90's that were a cultural island. Nothing like it before or after. Just prior to the internet being in every home, radio friendly music could still be good. A bright star that became a supernova, then disappeared.
You described it perfectly. I was about 13 or 14 when this came out, and there's something impossible to define about life in the 90's. I'm just glad I got to experience it, and miss it everyday.
Like a champagne supernova?
I stopped listening to AOR in the late 90's. 95% of new music today sucks.
Still touring..Seeing in 3 months
@@ninja_tony I was in college during this time. One of the greatest experiences imaginable. My heart aches to go back to those days and experience it again.
I would say Collective Soul falls firmly into "Alternative". They're doing their own thing, and doing it well.
Yeah, there's no grunge in Collective Soul @ all
@@gizzy2403 Eh, there's a bit of grunge in there...Like lex said, the "Turn your head, now baby just spit me out." Does have a bit of that grunge sound, so does Where the River Flows and Heavy IMHO...but if I'm being technical, I'd say it's post-grunge alternative, as the OP referenced...
@@42Mrgreenman maybe, but they definitely have their own unique sound, much like Smashing Pumpkins or Incubus do. I just hate that term "Grunge" though
I find that a lot of 90's bands fall into this category, as they exhibited several different sounds on any given album (Live and Faith No More are standouts in this genre).
It was a nice change after the 80's sound (which I loved and grew up with) became increasingly homogenized and repetitive (as all eras of music do).
Collective Soul…Should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! ! !
I really like these guys. They were different and interesting and have some really good songs. "Heavy" "Gel" "Shine" "The World I Know" "Where the River Flows", Thank you.
“And all your weight it falls on me. It brings me down”
They ABSOLUTELY need to react to heavy, it's SO GOOOOOOOD
@@MissRockabellaHart Yes!
Collective Soul is one of those bands that I feel like time forgot, which is a shame. They are still around as far as I know, but in the mid to late 90's, they were everywhere, and had a long string of great songs. But they never get remembered and talked about in the same way 'bigger" bands of the day are. I loved this, Gel, Shine, The World I Know, Heavy, and a handful of others they did around this time.
They are still touring with a few musicians changes.
They're still touring and released a new album some months ago. It is a nice one!
"Shine", the opening song of their debut album "Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid", might have Lex dropping that brush for about 5 minutes, then picking it back up. That whole album is 4-6 vibes that flow like no other and show why they're still touring.
Brad and Lex reacted to Shine about three months ago, so you can check that out right away.
At first, the song didn't have a title. Singer Ed Roland said: "That's the only song the band did not like. When I presented it to them, they hated it, to be honest with you. I talked them into it, we recorded it, and they did want the title in there somewhere, so I came up with the bridge, just to put 'December' in there. But it was basically a relationship breakup."
One of my favorite Collective Soul songs is "Heavy".
Love that one as well and also Why Part 2.
A great Collective Soul song. Also check out The World I Know
Collective Soul lead singer Ed Roland explained about lyrics of December, "We were going through a tough time with our first manager, and I just felt like at the time, a lot of stuff happened really quickly. You've got to remember, we had a hit song (Shine) before we had a label or even a true band. So, that relationship started to deteriorate. And while we were in the studio, it came pretty natural. I just wanted to talk about how I felt I was being used and whatever I did was not good enough ever." After the was released, the band got in to a legal tangle with Richardson (first manager) that froze their earnings for over a year.
These guys were kind of lost to time, but it can’t be understated how huge they were in the 90’s. It’s not an exaggeration to say they have 60 minutes+ (spanning 5 albums) of big radio hits from that time period.
Yeah, these guys were cranking out the hits in the mid-late 90’s. I remember thinking they were one, maybe two, hit wonders & they just just kept winning me over. They should probably be mentioned a lot more than they are.
Their name is so apropos, considering their music reaches in and touches your soul. Their debut album; Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid was one of those that you could listen to every song over and over.
I can listen to their first 4 albums on constant repeat! They seem timeless. They never seem dated.
Collective Soul = Clever song writing + high production value.
My daughters and I just saw Collective Soul last weekend. Great show. They are a band that rights catchy music. I recommend checking out more of their music.
Lex likes it because it's post-grunge, alt rock. lol. They were a little on the chill side, Collective Soul was pretty underrated back then to me. Very good band. They had lots of good songs and videos during the '90s and '00s.
Also, Brad is right! Lex, too.
Thank-you for reacting to Collective Soul. You're the first reactors I've seen do this! I would recommend "Heavy" and "The World I Know" by them as well.
Having been a Metal Head for all of the 1980's & essential demise of Metal in 1990, Alternative Music of the 90s (including that from Collective Soul) is what made the 90's a great decade in music 🎶 🎵 😀
THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD. My dad had this album and I wore it out in the early 00s. Great band
Collective Soul - Where the river flows
This was a HUGE hit. I would say one of the biggest radio songs of the 90's. Also haven't found anybody that dislikes this song.
😎 no other band had more #1 single releases than
Collective Soul in
The 1990's
Run and Precious Declaration are 2 great tunes from them.
Run is such an excellent song!
Precious Declaration is a classic. Heavy is great too.
This is alternative. The true definition
I love this band, not just because they’re from my home state but they had had a really unique sound. This is my favorite song by them. I love the vocal arrangements.
Collective Soul was one of my go to bands when I was a kid. Thier first three or four albums were great.
These guys were the kings of the catchy guitar riff and melody hook.
They had a great sound. My favorite of theirs is "World I Know"
Completely different vibe - very powerful and somber sounding. The video is nearly a tear jerker.
Finally!! Instant classic all-time mega-smash from mid-90s. Why Pt 2 is their best song.
"Part of the lyrics sound Grunge-y."
Yup, this was contemporary with the Grunge era, and would have been played alongside Nirvana and AIC on the radio. If you liked this, consider checking out Collective Soul: "The World I Know" or "Where the River Flows."
This was one of best alternative rock songs of 90s when alternative rock was legend, the vibe was don't worry be happy
I remember it was like 1995, they were scheduled to play at a nearby festival I was set to go to with my friends. We skipped out of work a couple hours early. (Boss was cool since we came in early all week.) Anyways, we showed up at the festival when they just opened and they were the opening band. There are maybe 50 people in the crowd and they kicked ass. Their debut album was out and I and my friends all went to get a copy from the guys selling them right there! They were very chill and we overheard them saying their lead singer's idea to play for themselves was a good one since there were so few there. But another guy in the band said those few dug the music. One of my friends yelled out "Damn, right!" They all laughed and signed the CDs for each of us before they piled into their bus for the next gig. I still have the CD and it is resealed over the original seal they all signed. I went out and bought a second one and listened to that one forever. Matter of fact, I'm gonna go pull that one out of my closet with my CD collection and play it again... just for me.
Fantastic band. Still great today.
"December" was an anomaly on this particular Collective Soul record. It was a big change of pace, for the most part. It was more on the lighter, acoustic, grungier side of things. Or Alt Rock, if you will. The rest of the album was straight up Post Grunge Rock with heavier guitars, but still pretty light in terms of vocals. God I hated the 90s...lol. Just nothing came out of that era that was worth saving. And it was all due to the industry's higher ups in the Record Companies and Distribution Companies like MTV, VH1, and others who all of sudden, one day in like 1992 that said, "the 80s Metal scene is over, and now we're just focus on Grunge, Hip Hop and Boy Bands."
Their debut album had sooo many hits! They were a different sound with their melodies, but also brought a hard edge into a lot of their songs... December is a GREAT tune! 90's music was all over the place, Collective Soul brought bits and pieces of all the sounds of that era into their music.
the Band is called "She Wants Revenge"...the song is "Out of Control"......."We got nowhere to Go, We got nothin' to do...Instead of Dancing Alone I Should be Dancing With You"... and just gets more intimate and intense...it seems to be one of those songs that invoikes a certain feeling.......
Somewhere Down that Crazy River....robbie robertson a feeling
Catch the blue train
Places never been before
Look for me
Somewhere down the crazy river
So good in concert!! Seen them 4 times and 1 of my top 5 favorite bands!!
I've been a fan since Hints came out in the early 90s. Finally saw them in concert a few years ago. They still kick ass!
90's was a good decade for hard rock.
this was the very first song i had ever heard as a child after coming to this country! Brings back so many memories as a kid telling anyone in every car when this came on to turn it up!
Just saw Collective Soul for the 3rd time last year and one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Ed Roland is a terrific front man.
One of my favorite bands. I think they often fly under the radar. One of those bands that you hear a song and go "Wow! That's Collective Soul?" Need to check out "The World I Know" official video. That'll touch you. Also, I believe another one of their great songs "Smashing Young Man" is directed at Billy Corbin of the Smashing Pumpkins.
MORE COLLECTIVE SOUL PLEASE!!!!
Great song... Please react to "The World I Know", by Collective Soul.😀
A very under-rated band.
One of my all time favorite bands
Lots of great Collective Soul songs- my favorite 1990's band, and into the 2000's! Please try "Heavy" and "Precious Declaration".
As a 90s kid, Collective Soul was one of my absolute favorites along with Bush and the offspring
They were my first concert lol. They opened for Creed. They put on a good show and they sound just as good live as they do on their albums.
Never understood this song. But it was their time to shine. That album was pretty huge
Ed Roland didn’t write story telling lyrics in the 90’s. They were all symbolic poems. Their newer music he has taken a different approach to writing. I kind of dig his older writing style than the newer writing style.
What a vibe this song gives off
I appreciate you doing Collective Soul. They truly are a phenomenal band. "Shine" was their first big hit. "Gel" and "Where the River Flows" from their second album is a bit heavier. But as others suggested, "Heavy" is a very good and well produced song of theirs that has good guitar riffs and lyrics.
Collective Soul was kind of its own thing. Like grunge-lite.
Underrated band. Great song
I saw these guys live in 98 and 99. amazing show.
Atlanta Grunge! North Georgia alternative rock was eclectic. REM, Collective Soul, B52's ect were just different.
Collective Soul is definitely one of those '90s bands that left the public consciousness in the years since, but there's a whole lot of gems in their catalogue. I recommend "Heavy". Definite jam.
So many memories of my dad playing this album in the 90s and us rocking out in the living room. 🙂
Runaway Train from Soul Asylum would be another good pick for 90's rock.
In the strictest sense the term Grunge only applies to bands that were formed or based in Seattle in the late 80’s and flourished in the 90’s. In the wake of it’s massive success “grunge” bands sprang up all over the country and even the UK. They are usually called “Post Grunge” or alternative. Soundgarden was originally marketed as a Heavy Metal band but the recorded company rebranded them as grunge after it became a phenomenon. Alice In Chains also considered themselves to be a metal band.
6:41 Loved Lex's impersonation of the singing... 😊
Their songs The World I Know and Gel (off of the same album) are both great listens.
Saw them in Nashville, IN a few weeks ago. Fantastic show, Where the River Flows is one of the best live rock songs of all time.
Lex reminds me of Jerry Cantrell with the hat and the awesome long hair.
This song brings me back to the 90s taking trips to the swimming pool with friends and family. :)
They were part of the broader 90s alternative rock scene that some have labeled as grunge.
Another one of my hometown bands from Georgia - PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS ✌❤☮
One of my favorite bands back in the day so many great songs and none of them sounding the same
Fun fact, the first song I learned on guitar when I was about 15 back in 1995. Yes, I'm 42 now Einstein. (I know you all did the math)
Great positive band spiritual band. Watched a live show they did in Morocco and this whole album was done nicely done live in the streets and on stage.
Collective Soul is such a vibe!! Honestly, there is nothing like them. They are a one of a kind band! Name 1 band that has this vibe. I don't think you can. They are something special.
Collective Soul was not grunge. They were an alternative to grunge. They came out after the grunge wave hit. Many more great CS songs to react to. Personally my favorite band of the 90s.
Agree. I see them as southern rock. Like a modern Lynyrd Skynyrd or ZZ Top.
Saw them live few years ago and it is still a memorable concert love CS
Every song on that first album they put out is darned good IMO. Used to listen to it driving to work. Originally listened to it just for the sound but then began to slowly piece together at least some of the meaning and recurring themes.
I'm going to see these guys on June 11th!! So happy to see them again. Great band!
First heard this in a pool hall, had a great sound system, fell in love with the song right there. Great song to play pool by, if you're winning... lol
Glad to see that you guys are using many of the videos of the songs for your reactions. Sometimes the video really helps to bring the arist's vision to light...of course other times they're just a means to an end and add nothing, contextually, to the song.
I remember when I first heard this on the radio in the late 90's.
My fave song.... Of ALL TIME! the throw is King!
I really like this song and I think Lex is adorable.
Collective soul have a lot of good songs, but my Favorite is "Heavy", The Guitar Riff is Great & it Rocks.
It’s kind of like one of those SAT questions, yes all grunge is alternative, but not all alternative is grunge. Lol
Thank you! I love these guys! "Gel", "Shine", "Where the River Flows", "Heavy", "The World I Know"...all of them amazing songs! I hope you give some more of their stuff a listen. There are only so many Alanis songs to go around, right Brad? :)
Ooooo I LOVE this song. Havent listened to it in a couple years so I was glad to see you play it and refreshed my memory. Such a fresh sound. A little grungie, a little sinister in a couple of parts, just a smooth, sweet sound. Mostly alternative if you ask me. Thanks for the reminder of how much I love this song... off to add it to my playlist :) Shine is probably my favorite song by them and I think you would both like it for different reasons.
Please check out Collective Soul's song "Cut The Cord". They just released their 11th studio album today and this is on it! Collective Soul is known for their upbeat rock and roll tunes and you haven't heard ROCK until you've heard "Cut The Cord"! Like I said, it's brand new so please show some love to this band that is still rocking for 30 years! Please please please don't skip this suggestion. I help work for the band with their social media stuff and it would be AMAZING for them to see you react to their new song. I'll even show them!
Absolutely fantastic new release along with their release latest! Good stuff!! They sound great!
For a newer Collective Soul song, check out "Good Place To Start" They have so many good songs though, you could literally pick anything.
What a great band, so much great stuff out there by them.
They are christian alternative thank y'all for doing this band it reminded me of my dad ❤️
They are not Christian band. Ed and Dean’s father was a minister and they grew up in a Christian home but they have come out and said “We are not a Christian band. It’s just not our gig.” When Roland was asked about his spiritual and religious sounding lyrics, he said it was because growing up the only book and stories he knew was the Bible.
Plus going to many concerts to see them, I can tell you, they may be Christian’s but they don’t represent Christianity by their live shows.
Collective Soul came around when Rock and Alt Rock blurred the line. I heard their hits played on both the Classic and Alt Rock radio stations. Ha! Radio stations.
Collective Soul is Christian Rock, that got popular. I know they claim it is not religious based, but the lyrics definitely have biblical meaning. It is alright, James Hetfield grew up the kid of a Preacher Man also, and "Creeping Death" is a rocking religious song. Collective Soul also made some good songs, and I listen to this on regular rotation.
Another good one is "The world I know - Collective Soul"
Best Collective Soul song in my opinion and I'm a die hard fan, even took my kids to see them once because I couldn't get a babysitter and they were playing on the beach. Kids had a blast and so did hubby and me. It's not grunge it's rock or alternative rock.
“Don't scream about, don't think aloud
Turn your head now baby just spit me out
Don't worry about, don't speak of doubt
Turn your head now baby just spit me out”
So many people in the 90s were convinced that this song was about receiving head. Yeah, it’s cool if you wanna spit. Just don’t talk about it.
I seen live back when Kid Rock just started he was the opener at a Halloween Concert too Fun..!
One of my favorite bands of the 90s . For Brad I recommend Run , Forgiveness and or World I know .
For Lex I recommend Heavy
Great band. Great memories. Shine, and Gel are great songs too. They are on tour.
Collective soul has some great songs. Try "Heavy."
Gotta listen to "Heavy" by Collective Soul. Such a good song.
You guys gotta check out their song: Gel
good memories of teen years
They have a wonderful collection! A fascinating rabbit hole
Awesome Georgia based band! Seen them twice up here in Canada.
