I was sitting at the bar,and the bartender thought she was all alone. She had this song blasting while cleaning and singing along at the top of her lungs. When she noticed me, she screamed and almost fell over. Rock on Brad & Lex
Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Kristy, who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. The band members thought he was saying "Sister Christian" and that became the title.
Motoring was what they used to call Cruising - driving around with friends.
Motoring meant when I was in my early 20s. They were great by the way in concert. But motoring meant like puberty. Where their ready for sex. Mama says it is a gift to give to the right guy. Great videos guys. I'm glad I found you 💕
This song is how you ruin your younger sisters high school career. Everyone in her high school knew and teased her about this song.
Ruth Meow Well… a little embarrassment due to somebody who actually gives a shit how your life turns out, is a small price to pay to have somebody who gives a shit in your life.
@@TheMasonator777 But you have to admit, teenagers don't think that way. I am sure that after she grew up it was something she laughed about.
@@ruthmeow4262 Kelly Keagy was born in 1952, his Sister was born in 1962....She would have been 20/21 when this song was recorded, and 21/22 when released. Maybe he wrote it a couple of years earlier when she was a Teenager? So we can rest assured she wasn't tortured by her classmates -- at least for this. And to add a little to the Motoring question.... Christy was one of the kids who cruised the main drag in Eugene, Oregon, the Keagys' hometown. Cruising in cars was known as motoring in some places. (for years I never knew what he was talking about)
The whole album is pretty good. Brings me back to my teenage years.
Yep
Same ✌️😝🤟
absolutely! both the singer wrote and play instruments, the two guitarists are fire and sing great background and keyboard player is awesome as well!
me 2
I was about 10 when this came out... music was soo much better back then
"Don't Tell Me You Love Me" is their kick ass rock song.
Agree I loved that song more
U can still rock in America!
Ooh Ya! that a good one, they should definitely check that one out!
My favorite of theirs!!
They have so many good songs. I love "You can Still Rock in America" it's a fun song with a great guitar solo!
You should listen to the band Triumph too, they were another underrated band.
Guitar SOLOS! Jeff Watson and Brad Gillis trade off solos in that fun track.
This song will forever remind me of the weirdest scene in the movie Boogie Nights (the Drug Deal with Alfred Molina, Wahlberg, J.C. Reilly & Thomas Jane).
They need to react to this movie
YESSS!
PTA wanted Sean Penn for the Alfred Molina role in Boogie Nights
night ranger one of the most underrated bands. you guys should do “when you close your eyes” next
LOVE that song!!!!
Absolutely.
HELL YES!!! Jack Blades=TALENTED!!!
every song on that album is good for me.. when I cruised long road trips I played it through more than once.. both sides, I just like it, "don't tell me you love me" makes you wanna jump up and dance, or go faster... lol
Much better song
Brad frowns and says, "Hmm." One of the most iconic power ballads ever and it gets a "Hmm." lol. They have a popular, really fun song called Don't Tell Me You Love Me. It has a great hook and is easy to bop to.
One of the most iconic guitar solos of the 80's.
It climaxes so perfectly.
Brad Gillis is criminally underrated.
And to think some radio stations cut the guitar solo for time reasons , Aholes ,incredible song , near perfect 👍🎸🎸🎸🥃🚬
Loving your reactions to power ballads! Boston's "Amanda" is another terrific power ballad that topped the US charts in '86 and is a must listen/reaction for this sub-genre. Many forget about this hidden gem, probably because Boston is not a metal band and most of their hits are from the '70s.
That song, and HollyAnn popped into my head yesterday.
Totally Agree! 💯 Grew up a Big Boston Fan!! Like ELO, the Music was AMAZING! 😁🎸🇺🇲👍
I saw them in concert a few years ago and the amount of energy that they come out on stage with and continue for the whole concert is amazing. Watching Kelly Keagy the drummer sing lead vocals on many songs was awesome too. They have been one of my favourite bands since I was 9 in 1984. Some other songs of theirs that are my favourites are Passion Play, Sing Me Away, Goodbye and You Can Still Rock In America. This song was written by the drummer for his younger sister.
So glad to see Lex totally digging the song without reading the lyrics.
Just like we had to do when we listened to it on the radio back in the day.
Thank you! Yes! And unless we had the album we had to wait for the radio to play our favorite songs.
@@lynnschook6124 Holding the cassette player next to the radio and ready with the record button just in case a favorite came on.
@@snakerstran9101 😂 yep. Did that a time or two.
This is such a great tune, always loved the melody and the guitar solo is killer.
Saw them in concert in 2019. Still sounded great. Jack Blades from Night Ranger is also a member of Damn Yankees as is Tommy Shaw from Styx.
This song always makes me reminisce my young teen days, 40 years ago. The 80's were great to grow up in. Thanks Brad and Lex
Motorin, in this song means running head long into life. The drummer sang the lead and wrote the song about his literal sister, Christine. Loved back then, still love this song!
And motorin is what we called here back in the day dragging main where you drove up and down the street honking and waving at your friends!
Actually, motorin' means you're leaving, taking off from everything you know.
@@normlee6566 Not how the Band itself explained it at the concert I attended
Motoring is cruising. The band explained this.
Saw Night Ranger at Disney’s Grad Night in ‘84. They put on a great show especially this song. Brad Willis and Jeff Watson are phenomenal guitarists
Always loved this song! There were several bands back in the day who had this type of sound. Another was 38 special Hold on Loosely and Caught up in you.
Night Ranger is one of the most underrated bands, from the 80’s. You have both Jack Blades on bass and Kelly Keagy on drums sharing lead vocals. Then you had Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson sharing lead guitar on many songs. I cannot understand why this band is overlooked as one of the iconic bands of the 80’s. So many awesome songs which have been mentioned throughout the comments.
This is about one of the Band member's little sisters, who he thought was growing up to fast, instead of enjoying her childhood. Very sweet song.
If you are or were a Big brother to a younger sister, you know what this song is saying. Don't try to grow up faster than you should, enjoy being a kid, it only happens once.
This song has had a huge resurgence for some reason. While their other big hits are totally forgotten. You'd never know this band had like 6 top20 songs - most only know this one
This was the background song in the drug deal gone wrong scene in Boogie Nights. Used as a great tension-builder along with the firecrackers! Great tune. Great movie scene.
Idk if ruined is the word but now everytime I hear this song I see that scene in my head 😂
And in some slasher movies from the 80’s too.
My very first concert ever.. They opened up for Kiss... I was 12 years old and blown away!!! You can still rock in America, and Don't tell me you love me are other great tunes!!!
I always kind of liked four in the morning as well
These guys are still touring. I saw them in 2017, they were the opening act for "Boston". A great pairing for a concert!
I love how the drummer is the singer for this song, you need to watch the live version
Loved this song featured on the soundtrack for ‘Boogie Nights’, staring Mark Wahlberg❤️
this song was my first introduction to night ranger, absolutely love them. they were also my first concert
This was on the soundtrack to Boogie Nights and was a key part of one of the scenes.
Pop pop pop pop
My favorite scene in the movie.
I remember the movie in general but not the song or scene.
I thought it was "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield, but I am incorrect. It was just this song.
@@dunhill1 ruclips.net/video/cGp-4NP76MM/видео.html
Don't Tell Me You Love Me was their 1st hit and super popular on MTV back in the early days.
Really goes well with stimulants and firecrackers.
Boogie nights, lol
I take it that's in reference to the songs use in a movie... at least based on the reply you have here,
- But still a BIZARRE comment.
The guitarist in this band filled in with Ozzy for a tour, while they were trying to get their first album done. Luckily Night Ranger had the patience to keep him during that really bad timing
Don't Tell Me You Love Me, When You Close Your Eyes, Rock In America and So Many More !! Excellent Rock Band !!
Love Night Ranger still rockin today in 2022.
Dont tell me you love me,
When you close your eyes
So many more.
LEX : " WHAT'S A MOTORIN...?"
BRAD : "SHE'S OUT IN THE STREETS. "
I got to see Night Ranger with Lover Boy in 1983. Great Concert!
Yes! same here except , unfortunately not with Loverboy opening... (I don't actually recall who opened offhand, in Southern Oregon ) ....but same time period, within their 1st American Tour.
But was a fantastic show & great time to be alive. 🎸
Great Scene with this Song in „Boogie Nights“ with Mark Wahlberg!
Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Kristy (this is the correct spelling, he tells us), who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. "It's the big brother looking after his little sister when she's growing up - a simple, almost naïve kind of lyric," he said in a Songfacts interview. "I wanted her to be able to see what I was talking about, that I was protecting her."
Brad gets hung up on some interesting stuff, like "Is he really talking to his sister?" ......... What if he was talking to all of the good "Christian" girls saving themselves for their husband? .... Then again, what if the song writer didn't mean that when he wrote it, but that's what thousands of fans thought the writer meant? THAT's what is important! The listener's interpretation of the artist's work.... What does it mean to YOU!!
Nice reaction, great band- Don't Tell Me You Love Me, Sentimental Street, Good Bye, When You Close Your Eyes, You Can Still Rock in America are all great songs. Jack Blades was in the group Damn Yankees you just covered. They have such good guitarists, Brad Gillis played with Ozzy for awhile and he was in Hearing Aid, a metal artist version of We Are the World.
I will always love this song for the fact that the drummer wrote it and sings it. Seeing the live performance is definitely worth it.
"Motorin'" is what we use to call "Cruisin," basically just getting in a car and driving up and down a street or around a block. Back when it was really popular, you could have dozens in not a hundred or more cars involved. If you had a convertible, you would leave the top down or the doors unlocked, and people would just jump in and out of different cars, the speed was always very slow. It was considered a popular teenage activity and a way to meet people or hang out with friends.
I heard a story about how the song was written. Kelly Keagy, the band's drummer had finally gone home after spending a couple of years on the road and not seeing his family. He had a younger sister that he was protective of and when he saw her, he realized his "little sister" wasn't so little anymore, and the boys were coming around. He knew he could not be there for her and her birthday was coming up, so he wrote this song as both a birthday present and an apology for not being there.
First concert. Cincinnati Riverbend. Front row. The best concert!!!!! I still love them! Night Ranger was totally underrated.
This song has always stood out.
It's a classic.
Got to see them on tour about 5 years ago with Rick Springfield and MAN did they blow me away!!
Thanks for doing this song ,so many memories .
Seen them in concert when I was in jr high on this tour. The song always takes me back to a good place.
Great song!!! U guys r bringing back my youth. Thank u so much.
Boogie Nights. The scene with this song was intense.
Makes me think of that great scene in Boogie Nights!!
You two are lovely! I do think you are so very clever and understand the songs more than you let on. :)
"Motorin" was a term in the 80's for leaving where you were and just runnin, hitch hikin or bikin somewhere...gettin' away!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU! So many folks seem to not understand that song lyrics don’t always have to be taken literally. That chorus is waaaay more about how it makes you FEEL than what the words actually mean
This song always makes me think of cruising around on a Friday night down the boulevard, everyone in their muscle cars, just being young and free...
This song always makes me think of that scene in boogie nights where they're smoking crack and lighting off firecrackers, LOL.
Those were the days !! 😆
Lots of memories. I remember the low riders with the fat tires and tinted windows too.
Ah man. I could literally cry thinking back to how much I miss those days!
Back in 1984 this was played many times a day on the radio, nobody really cared what the lyrics meant, what mattered was that hook, that driving hook that pushed you along, while, you guessed it, motoring.
One of my favorite guitar solos. Brad Gillis is a beast. So underrated.
Amazing song and that guitar solo...PERFECTION!!!
🔥🔥🔥awesome!!! Happy new year
Lex, I, like many here, will NEVER get tired of seeing the music take hold of you... and move you.
🤘🤘🤘
Takes me back to high school,SOOO many great songs back there
This song is candy.
Spot on, again. You guys are getting good at this!
Add an Asian kid lighting random firecrackers and this becomes one of the most tense songs you ever heard in a movie.
TBH, you could do a whole stream with Night Ranger songs. But, then again, I'm an old-ass white dude. Love the channel.
This is their best song. Thanks for reacting to it.
If only everyone could feel and appreciate classic rock like Lex!
you should check some of their rockers.
Dont tell me you love me, Sing me away, Still rock in america , Rumors in the air. great 80’s guitar rock
Goodbye and 4 In The Morning are my favorite songs from this group.
I got to see them back in October and they put on a great show.
This is my favorite song from Night Ranger, The Music Video may answer alot of your questions.
In the MV, the girl is either in Christian school or she was trying to be a nun, but she enjoyed going out with the boys.
Motorin' meaning joy riding or just going out. she eventually pays the price for flight, she left the church. my interpretation.
I can see reacting to song without the Music Video can make you interpret it for yourself, but having the Video will often answer most of your questions, although many MV will have no impact on the song what so ever. So Keep on doing what you do. I love it
"YOU CAN STILL ROCK IN AMERICA!" IT ROCKS!!!
I believe he's talking to his sister about riding around in cars with boys and telling her to be careful and don't "give too much away" to them.
Night Ranger had a lot of good songs. This is the only anyone remembers. Try "You Can Still Rock in America" and "Four in the Morning"
Please check out "Dont Tell Me You Love Me", "(You Can Still) Rock In America", "When You Close Your Eyes", "Sentimental Street" and "Sing Me Away".
Another Night Ranger song I would recommend is “Goodbye”, but a Live Performance version where it starts with 2 Acoustic Guitars then the lights go out and then ends as a loud electric performance.
We are one people. Where we go one, we go all. We won't be divided!
Almost every Friday growing up my mom and I would go eat at taco via and I would play this everytime on the quarter juke box, and play frogger. Good times
Great vid. The original title was "Sister Kristy," but the rest of the band thought Keagy was singing "Sister Christian," so that became the title. Keagy grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where "Motoring" was a term for driving around with your friends, often trying to pick up girls. If you like Night Ranger, you should listen to 'You can Still Rock in America'.
Such an 80s iconic song, one of those songs that instantly transports you 😉
BRAD: street motoring
LEX: that was good
My 64 y/o ass agrees with Brad. It's all about driving around. At least that is the way I interpreted it. Great reaction. Love you guys. Good New Years Eve song.
Hard to hear this song without thinking about the scene from “Boogie Nights”.
This song always does something to me. Very nostalgic
☆LONG LIVE THE 80'S☆
So many good songs, probably their hardest rockin' ones , " Don't Tell Me You Love Me". Have to give it a listen.
Great band. Amazing live band to this day.
You guys must have never watched the hit 1997 movie "Boogie Nights", as this classic 80's power ballad plays a memorable part in a VERY intense scene. Highly recommended.
I agree. That song along with Jessie's Girl is one of the greatest scenes ever filmed imo.
Oh to be a teenager again. Saw them a few years ago in concert and they sounded just as good
You nailed it….it’s about his sister getting her act together….😊👍🎸
Lead singer and bassist Jack Blades revealed who inspired his bandmate Kelly Keagy’s lyrics.
“Kelly’s sister’s name is Christy and so he was writing a song about his little sister growing up in a small town in Oregon and cruising up and down the street on a Friday, Saturday night, you know, motoring, everything like that, but it was sister Christy. He’s singing ‘sister Christy oh the,’ and we all thought it was Christian.
This song is an absolute staple among great 80s songs. Its an all time great.
Loved this song when I was a kid. Now I can't listen to it without thinking of the scene in Boogie Nights.
i always interpreted "motoring" as spinning your wheels, not making progress, not knowing what you want to do with your life --- a song about a girl fresh out of high school, trying to find her place in the world, but not knowing which direction to take.
Seen them in concert they are amazing
Loved Night Ranger in the 80's. Still do.
Nice review, excellent song.
This is what I spoke about on a different reaction of yours, about songs after 1985... most songs were made to be accompanied by the official music video.
Your questions would have been answered by watching the official music video. I'm not being harsh or mean, just trying to help you get more out of the experience.
You're not wrong, Green Jelly - Three Little Pigs, a perfect example of music & video being a greater experience when viewed together as intended.
@@kaidenorgana5151 It's one of those things that proves the song "Video killed the radio star". I remember pre-1985, music really had to be super descriptive, and stand alone on the audio. But once MTV came out, the labels and artists realized over the course of about 3 years, that they really change the experience by melding the audio and visual, it was a game changer... not always for the best, not always for worse. But it completely changed the game.
OMG, remember listening to this first time in a basement party. The 80's you just had to be there. Sister Christian was a song about GOOD GIRL'S!!!
Amazing Song...it's better everytime you hear it !!!
Gorgeous ballad takes me back to my youth. The whole album rocks btw
Loving the Snap on jacket
