I love my neos for background and basing. This tip is not my own but I’ve taken to activating them with and alcohol blender. No paper warping. Blends two or more colours seamlessly. Great for backgrounds. I found this technique however a bit harder for basing as it creates a really smooth finish and pencils glide too much on top. Happy creativity!
I take a box cutter and cut right down the middle of my masking tape (while it is still on the roll) and it makes it 100 times better...it doesn't matter if it isn't perfectly in the middle of the tape. Also, I run the edge of a card down the edge of the tape closest to the image and I hardly ever get bleed. You just have to be careful not to leave it too long so it won't rip your paper. You did a great job documenting your experience, you are very talented with using color, blending your materials, and teaching what you learn. Thanks for sharing!
This is a great tutorial! I love that you're learning with others that aren't as experienced, such as myself. I follow the same RUclips and Instagram pages too. They are so talented. As so are you! I love your tutorials because they are so helpful and you discuss a lot of the same issues I have as I'm learning with the process too. Can I say that I love your work and the colors you choose in your artwork. They seem so bright and cheery! 😊 Thank you for putting all of the helpful information in your video and other videos as well. And to the critical people who feel they need to say something so stupid as to complain about what microphone she uses, you're absolutely ridiculous! Who cares about something so little as that. Good lord! Can't we live in a world where we're not so critical of others and just enjoy the beautiful things in life?! Keep up the great work....I enjoy your videos so much! As well as watching you grow as an artist. Oh one thing with the masking off, I've found that using washi tape works great too. You can find it in different sizes so you can get in those small areas. Even if you have to use multiple strips. I like to use my cheaper washi tape, that I know I won't use as much as my nicer ones. I've found the ones from Dollar Tree work great. I hope that helps.
@ Yes they do! The pop of colour and texture is incredible! Like you said, the magic happens with the second layer. My first layer was a mix of watercolour pencils and pan. I have noticed that it should be used as the last layer on top (before acrylic). I tried adding watercolour and white pencils on top and that didn’t work for me at all. Thanks again :-)
I got the Neocolors for Christmas and I’m in love. I’m working on the galactic bottle page in rooms of wonder and I used these as my base layer. I did find that one light layer of these did the trick and I used the pencils for the rest. I knew I was getting these for Christmas so I borrowed 3 colors from the set (hidden in my moms office) because I was following a Christmas color along by Olivier Colours and I did sort of scribble the background and was quite splotchy. I’m happier with my second go. This background is amazing and I can’t wait to see what else you do with these
Just a suggestion, don't worry if people don't like something, you do what you want or need. They can buy you a mike, so there! 😂😂 idea: get a cute barrette and put mike on it? Love your video, such a beautiful smile!❤
I purchased the exact same set (30) a few years ago as my first set. BUT, I do not use them nearly enough. And despite not using them very often I have also purchased a large handful of open stock. LOL I have never been able to work with them very good. Now, to be fair -- I have only ever tried them on about 5 pages. I know, I know. 😆 I truly think if I picked them up again, after watching so many tutorials on them - I would fare much better. My issue is getting my pages wet. If the book is single sided I don't mind as much, however, the pages I have done in the past have been double sided. I guess I used too much water, although, I really tried to not use very much. I feel it is just my technique and well without practice I will never master this medium (or come close) I seem to do better with watercolor pencils, or one of my favorites, Inktense. You have inspired me to dig them out and give them a go, so we will see how this goes this time around. Thank you for sharing!
Yes absolutely a fan of neocolor2, don't think there is another product quite like them. I started off with a set of 12 I think and have now over 40. I like to use them for Hanna karlzon books as the paper is so good and yep deffo agree about trusting the process - pics sometimes need to go through an ugly stage.
This is an incredible tips and tricks for backgrounds with Neocolor IIs!! 🌹 You created awesome backgrounds!! 💞 I LOVE Neocolor IIs!! ❤❤ They are so fun to play with!! 🥰 They definitely caused my full set syndrome to come out- hard!! 🌈 I've had a lot of fun just playing with them. I am not an artist, more of a crafter, but I have colored many pages with pencil. But with these, I had a blast creating abstract pages full of color, including on wet pages!! 🌊 I've even created whimsical houses!! 🏘 That was so fun!! 🤗 I have seen people splatter with them by having the tip wet and using the paintbrush to send it off onto the page. One of my favorite RUclips artists who always works with Neocolor IIs in a sketchbook book is Art by Heather!! 😍 She does a lot of fun, different ways to create drawings!! 😊
This was such a useful video Kyra😊 your two backgrounds turned out so lovely, I received the 30 set for Christmas and have been to afraid to try but you have given me the confidence to just try them out, great tips from you as always🥰 I’ve said it before but I absolutely love your channel ❤
I adore the neocolor II 😁 for bigger areas i like to take an aquarelle brush size 10 in stead of a waterbrush. I think it lays down the pigment very smoothly. Coloring with Alena has a great tutorial on Neo II as well. Have fun experimenting 😁
Thank you for this video! I've had my neocolors for quite some time and struggle with them. Despite watching hours and hours of videos haha! I would love to watch your learning journey with them! And yes, nollisworld is an INCREDIBLE colorist! I love love love their channel and always learn so much!!
Funnily enough, I have very recently followed the exact same color along, to tame both my Polychromos and Neocolor II's :) I have small sets of both (15 neos), so any discrepancies were of course caused by lack of the exact colors. Definitely :D And what I've found is that the dabbing movement is definitely the key when it comes to neocolor background, smooth strokes do not work for me, as the medium seems to naturally give a bit uneven and "cloudy" coverage.
Being annoyed at a mic is so weird🤣Always coloring has a youtube channel, and she used to create awesome blends with neocolor ii. Unfortunately, she's no longer with us, but her coloring was amazing. I love my neocolor ii, (I also own 30 set) but I don't use them enough. You did great👍🏻
I loved watching the creation of the background you did with Neocolor. As for the tape, I did the same "mistake" ( I don't think of it as real mistake!😊) , I use a marker that matches the bakground just made and make the sharp edge I initialy wanted ! Or black marker and it looks 3D if used for one side and bottom of the picture !
Loved your video Kyra! I'm currently working on a page where I based with Neo II's for the first time. They're so soft and creamy. My issue is staying in the lines. I would have done better to almost go to the line then color in with pencils. I love them. Just need more practice. Your backgrounds are amazing!!! ❤
I love other water soluble media I've tried. Especially tinted graphite, though I prefer Spectrum Hour's Co!our Tint (now discontinued) over Derwent's Graphitint. I just can't seem to make friends with these. That's why only have the set of fifteen and a few open stock colors.
That’s so fair! I think sometimes there are some mediums out there that don’t gel with our art style. I’m definitely not great when it comes to painting 😅✨
@@apicturedpurpose True. Hopefully, I'll find a way to use the ones I have, in a way that works for me. It's better that I don't get to where I want the full set, because of my fixed income. In a way, maybe it's a good thing that I haven't fallen in love with using them.
I love your videos and your energy! I have to admit, I am among those who don’t like the mini mic….I wouldn’t have said anything but now that the subject was broached………😂
I absolutely adore my Neocolors, the jade green especially is STUNNING. Although I just received the set and have yet been brave enough to use them in my books 😂 I got to get passed that fear and take on some of your braveness! 😅
Great video. You’re very engaging to watch. Plus, watching a colourist try new things for the first time, and hearing how they learn, is really enjoyable in its relatability. At this point, it’s both a happy and sad thing when I have to add ANOTHER medium to my (ridiculously long) colouring supplies wish list! .. I WANT IT ALL! So on the list the Neos go! 🤷♀️ Laughed out loud re the mini microphone, but also glad the ‘elephant in the room’ has been talked about 😂 I’ve been wondering for a while now why you would hold that thing! 🤭
I only have my inktense and 2 albrecht dürer pencils for water activateable (is that a word ? xD) mediums. Maybe I will get some neo II's for testing. I'm also impatient xD Tested my inktense on a page I liked the least in mythomorphia xD Still haven't finished that page xD
I definitely recommend the Neocolors! Especially if you’re already a fan of water mediums. Coloring your least favorite page in your book with a new medium is a great idea 💡
Thanks for the video. Niko Simi Colors is also a great reference channel to show how to use the Neo2's. I just adore your style. Have a great day.
I love Elm colors as well.
Thank you so much! I love Elm colors but I’ve never watched Niko Simi Colors before so I’ll have to check them out 🤩💕
@@apicturedpurpose niko simi colors does amazing work.
I second this. Neko is the best!

Thanks for this. I added some Neocolor ii’s to my latest colouring page and it turned out beautifully! 😊🎉
That’s so exciting! They really do add something special to a page don’t they? 🤩💖

I'm so glad you're loving the Neocolors! It's always fun to find a new favorite medium. 🤩
Great job! I really like how you masked off the pages too. I’m gonna have to remember to do that.

I love that you built your own collection! It’s always so satisfying 🥰
I don’t get why people don’t like the mini mic. 🎤 lol seems like an odd thing for someone to get bent about.
😂 I totally agree. If you let the mini mike bother you then you need to learn to let stuff go ❤
Thanks for your understanding! 😅❤️

It’s just a cheap brush from the dollar store! But I’m hoping to upgrade to the Arteza water brushes soon 🥰
I think they came out great. Do you spray a fixative after doing your coloring pages.
Yes I do! I use a matte workable fixative spray 🥰
@@apicturedpurpose thanks for that info
I would try the liquid masking I haven’t myself, but I’m thinking that might work
Masking fluid isn’t great for creating crisp edges but a good option for masking the foreground elements in pages 🥰💖
@@apicturedpurpose oh good to know. Thank you so much. And by the way, your work and your channel is just fabulous. Great job.😉
Hi, do you have water in the brush or do you dip it in water? I am always scared that there comes too much water out of the brush
Yes I use a water brush! I promise that it’s fairly easy to control the water flow 🥰✨
Tried tape and pen
That’s where I have trouble. I cannot look at a picture and figure out the colors used☹️
