The story Andy tells about Charles Stanley changing the worship time so parishioners could avoid the Pride Parade took place in the mid 1990's. First Baptist Atlanta moved from downtown Atlanta to suburban Dunwoody around 1996. Stanley did this for two practical reasons: 1) because the Pride Parade creates a traffic nightmare that makes it difficult for people to leave the area, and, 2) Pride Parades are not polite events. They are open, in-your-face displays of confrontation. They were in the 90's and still are. There was no benefit to Baptists and their children to have to view such a spectacle while leaving church. The parades were specifically scheduled to coincide with the end of church services so that Christians and their kids would have to be confronted with it. It was done to make people feel inconvenienced and uncomfortable. I guarantee you that Andy's embarrassment about it now is retrofitted. It's almost certain that at the time he was aware of and sympathetic to his father's concerns.

Looking back on it, and now that i am a reformed homosexual, i would say that Christians are not homophobic and bigots. There are plenty of gays out there who condemn one another in their own camp. Call it "homohomophobia" if you will. Gays needed and still need to confront each other. i don't think Andy would stand up for all this transgender nonsense and mutilating children. Andy is welcoming all people into his congregation. It is not up to him to convert them, just as it wasn't up to him to convert me. Charles Stanley was trying to let his church out early because the homosexuals were coming to confront him in an antagonistic fashion. They weren't coming to say hi. He wanted to avoid conflict as well as avoiding what Jon said about the open displays of debauchery that characterize gay gatherings. One would have to assume that the Methodists who were there to express their acceptance of the unrepentant were among the many in their denomination who had fallen away from Biblical orthodoxy.
The incident that Andy Stanley described to CNN probably happened well back into the 20th century. I think it was probably not real long after Charles Stanley had gained the ire of the perversion lobby by saying that AIDS was God's curse on homosexuals, which happened before Jon was born. (I remember at the time thinking that was a gaffe because what about lesbians?) The reaction Andy Stanley describes within himself of thinking that the Methodists were more sound in their response to this situation than his own father shows that Andy was already heterodox at that point, and it was apparently a very long time ago.

The litmus test for anyone (I think) is “Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?” “Is He your Lord?” It is apparently not possible for a person to say they know Jesus when they don’t. I am amazed at the efficacy of the question. Some are angry when I ask them gently if Jesus is real to them. Often they will not deny Jesus but admit they are not walking with Him. Surprising how many admit they know Jesus but do not attend any church. The true church actual borders have little to do with traditional churches. Connecting fellow believers with other true believers is what we most need to do. The false church is way more visible now than the true church. The best answer I can come up with to the whole "we only have two commandments" is to simply reply "and has God been silent on how we should do that?" What I find is most people hold that position thinking that they are open to interpret how to love God and how to love others however they see fit. Suggesting the two commandments statement by Jesus is actually a summary of the whole law usually leaves such people in a difficult spot because they simply don't understand what they're saying.

Stanley ignores a requirement of salvation, repentance.
Never did Jesus invite sinners to join Him and to continue to sin.
To love God, is to obey His commands.
We cannot invite sinners to continue to be sinners.
Being born again means we condemn our sinful ways, repent, and commit to a NEW life in Christ.
Stanley is saying you can be a Christian and continue your adultery, homosexual behavior, thieving, wife beating, etc. You do not have to give up anything sinful.

The trip-up is to stipulate enormously that there is a conflict between Christ's call to love and the various restrictions in the Bible on behavior. The Holy Spirit is exhibiting love for each individual woman through the restrictions on leadership, just as He is demonstrating love to the individual men and women who are participating in the sin of sodomy by clearly stipulating the sin and how that sin will destroy a person. There is NO conflict for God; there is only conflict in the sinful hearts of those who choose to ignore this truth and go their own way.

The story about the gay pride parade and FBA letting out church early definitely occurred back in the 90s when FBA was still located in midtown Atlanta. I would’ve been one of those innocent kids they were worried about sheltering. I have vague recollections about the controversy, but I was young enough it mostly went over my head. To my knowledge, Andy Stanley would’ve indeed been there at that time, as he was the youth pastor for a time prior to taking a position heading up the “North Campus” in Dunwoody.

The idea that general commands would overrule specific commands just sounds bizarre to me, but perhaps that's because I'm a lawyer. In the law, it's a fundamental rule of interpretation that a specific rule will supersede a general one.
Of course, when it comes to biblical hermeneutics, you're already far afield if you're reading any moral command to supersede any other, because that presupposes contradiction, which can't be present in the word of God.

I was at First Baptist Church from 1982 until 1992. I knew Andy, Layne, and Reggie and many of the first pasotrs at the Avon Property. I was asked to lead the college dept, at one time, but, I could not leave my corporate engineering job behind. (My wife would not have it) I went to Navigators with Layne and Reggie Joiner baptised my baby sister in his home church in Albany High School. I graduated from Westover high school in Albany, the same year that he graduated. His mom and dad were origonally from albany GA, I believe.
I have a better view than most, first hand, as to what happened up in Hotlanta. I was advised, by God, to get out of ATL in 1995. At that point in time
in most ATL churches, the mega-donors controlled the church start-ups. And most of the demographic of the North Atlanta location around the Avon Property was made up heavily of Gays.
. . . . namely sons and daughters of the former FBA big donor pool. In fact, FBA was guilty of moving its chirch closer to its largest donors, which created a blank-check for Andy to experiement in journalism and public-speaking at the upper campus.
My view and opinion, just because you have found out how to get the unchurched into your buildings and groups, doesn't mean that there are any quality-converts happening.

In the below text, let me explain to you what God is now up to in my life & yours, really, really soon.
As a 17 year old non-Christian I encountered a UFO, the event bothered me and my friends so much so that I became a Christian by the time I was 20, while at Auburn University. I reached out to my friends 20-30 years later and I then found out that they are all professing to belong to the WIckam cult. I have so many testimonial stories of how God got my attention to come into relationship through the Holy Spirit and by the testimony of Jesus. I dreamed in 1997, that I would be working in Cape Canaveral FL as a contractor for NASA. (20 years later that had & has become my reality)
Ever since September 2017, I have had rapture timing dreams projecting out at least what seems to be the End of this age in time.
Angels are about to take dominion back from the humans and the luciferian, fallen angel types will protest the change of venue and dominion. (Revelation 12)

I also knew several people who were on staff at FBA back in the day who would tell you that Dr. Stanley was a great preacher / teacher, but not a great pastor. As with any large organization with a renowned leader, there was internal politics, people getting let go for not being yes-men, and this constant feeling that the church itself largely existed only as a platform from which to launch his larger, global ministry / missions organization, In Touch, and that’s where his heart really was.
I don’t say any of this to denigrate Dr. Stanley, Lord knows he’s done more for the kingdom than I ever will. However, he’s a fallible human being just like everyone else, and I think it’s very obvious that he made mistakes in how he handled his own marriage and family.

I agree with Andy in that it’s better to invite gays to church and never turn them away bc how will they draw close to Gods love if we who represent Jesus do not accept all sinners into church whether they’re Gay or any other type of sinner of which we all are. I’m not gay . I don’t advocate for homosexuality but I would never shun them away or insist they aren’t allowed in church . The hope is that they will come to Christ and do everything in their power to not sin in the same way we try to do everything we can to not sin. If a homosexual asked to come to church with me , I would say yes in the hopes that God will touch their hearts. Jesus always hung out with sinners didn’t he ? So there’s a fine line here bc I see Andy trying too hard to please everyone at the cost of unwittingly moving away from biblical truth and that’s sad bc I’m not sure how intentional it is .

Andy's sermon starting at 17:00 is spot on! The Gentiles were never required to live under the 10 Commandments, let alone expected to. This was God's law written down for the nation of Israel, and the distinction was the entire basis for the Acts 15 council's proclamations. Why are so many in the Church quick to forget that we are saved BY GRACE, as they rush to immediately subject us to living under the law again?
"We are saved by grace SO THAT we might live according to God's law!" they might say. What!? Israel thought as highly of themselves as well (see Ex. 19:1-8; Deut. 5:27-33). How'd that turn out for them? "But we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us SO THAT we may obey God's law!" they'll retort. Yet Paul writes in Galatians 5:18 that "if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law."
Grace and law are 100% at odds with one another (see Ro. 11:6). If we are able or empowered to live according to the law, we have no need for grace, which would be anathema to Christian doctrine. The desire to subject ourselves back under the law when we have a better faith, a better covenant, a better mediator, and a better high priest is mind-boggling, and frankly heretical as it misleads people away from victory in the Christian life.

In the not so distant past, knowing that issues such as SSA are.delicate, and the circumstances and severity differed from person to person, these issues were dealt with on a case by case basis. Some Pastors may have come down very hard on individuals who were unrepentant and adversarial, but the majority of cases I saw were handled with great sensitivity. I am not sure where all of a sudden the church has to do an about face and repent for anything, and why now all the prominent Pastors are folding like a deck of cards on this issue. I makes me think they are either being threatened or there actually is some money coming in from somewhere. I pray that we do find out the truth. This issue has become too divisive and the folks who actually are struggling are being hurt the most.

You cannot expect pastors who are emotionally aligned with the Democratic party to be solid on this because the Democratic party has made it clear that exaltation of perversion is at the very top of its list of values. Anybody who's looking for a church need not concern himself long with whether they should be going to a church like Redeemer NY where they hear Democratic party talking points from the pulpit. Obviously the answer is no.

Do you think these bad actors are getting paid by the Democratic party or threatened by them? If so I really hope they are exposed. The stakes are high. I am glad I turned to the Lord for salvation 25 years ago and not today. I think I would really be led astray.

@@shamish-2960 I don't think the Democratic party needs to pay them. The problem is evangelical seminaries and colleges are loaded with faculty members who are worldly-minded and who strongly lean to the Democratic party and they are influencing and corrupting an awful lot of pastors. These evangelical educators want the respect of the world they love the praise of men more than the praise of God, they are more attuned with the high-and-mighty then they are interested in going outside the camp where Christ is and sharing His reproach as it says at the end of Hebrews. Ultimately the problem of a corrupt clergy is something that cannot be overcome unless we are willing to reclaim the institutes of higher education. This sham of evangelical colleges and seminaries that are scarcely different from Catholic and liberal Protestant institutions has to be exposed fully and has to come to an end.

Jesus said to the Samaritan woman, ““Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.””

Remember Andy’s comments about small churches and selfish parents essentially? 🙄🤯. He did issue an apology for that one. 😒

Some wonder where Andy went wrong. Who knows, I don't. But being popular and having hundreds of people every week tell you how great you are is very intoxicating. I can name a dozen pastors that have gone the way of being almost to good to answer to anyone anybody. John MacArthur heads the list. Andy is right behind him.
I must ask the question I already know the answer to. Where are the elders?
The answer is.....they are men of low or no courage. They have sold out to a paycheck and a job. They have become apostate. They have left their first love.
I ain't talking about Bennie Hinn, or Kenneth Copeland etc. They're always about $$$$.
