  • This is an extremely simple DIY baby gate with a fence look. My son started crawling and we needed a good way to block the stairs. This was quick, easy and it looks great too!

    Good job on the gate! For the latch hardware, you could have possibly pounded it around a broom handle or something to help it match the shape of the stair spindle. But it looks like you managed anyway. Subscribed!

      +Bruce A. Ulrich thank you very much. That is a great idea to get the curve for the latch. I wish I would have thought of it, but yes it worked out in the end. I appreciate your subscription. I have subscribed to you as well.

    THANK YOU! First time making a gate (or really doing any functional woodwork) and this saved me so much trial and error. I even ended up making the same mistake as you and needing a little piece of wood to extend the latch. Your fix saved me a TON of panic

    One of the best reasons to use shellac for a baby gate is because it is baby safe, non toxic once dry. One of the best finishes for all baby toys. Can basically eat the dried shellac.

    hi, great job , but i have a question , how you managed that the bottom corner from the latch side didnt swing when the boy was pushing the door since you put the latch at the top corner ?

    • @MadebyMitch
      @MadebyMitch  5 лет назад

      Thanks Ali. The gate was plenty strong enough that the bottom doesn't move much. You could certainly add more latches, move the latch to the middle, or use a different latch. Thanks for the comment.

    Do you recommend using a board to hang the gate? Or would it be ok if I mounted it directly to the wall? I'm so new to all of this! And if I do mount it directly to the wall, should I try for a stud? Or are drywall anchors ok to use for this type of project?

    • @MadebyMitch
      @MadebyMitch  4 года назад

      Hey Maeghon. You do not need to use a board but I would definitely try for a stud. Drywall anchors will hold for a short while, but the gate will eventually start pulling out from the wall dsgging the ground.

    Would there be any way you could suggest attaching this gate to a skinny cast iron railing? I’ve thought about using super strength command strips. But I’m not sure.

    • @MadebyMitch
      @MadebyMitch  4 года назад +1

      Hi Elena. That sounds tricky. I don't think command strips would hold long. I would probably use ubolts to attach a piece of wood to the rail and fasten the gate to the piece of wood. I would have to see it but from what you described that sounds like what I would do. I hope this helps

    Mitch - I love everything about this build except my wife will not allow me to drill into the pole where the latch goes. Do you have any recommendations as to a solution to that?

    • @rustybones99
      @rustybones99 3 года назад

      Get two blocks of wood and drill a semicircle down each. So that when placed together there is a hole down thru them the size of the pole. Then put them on each side of the pole and screw them together on the corners. It will essentially wrap the pole with a block of wood. You can then attach the latch to the block of wood without drilling into the pole. You just have to make sure you size the hole properly so that the wood block, when screwed together, clamps tightly to the pole.

    A second latch near the bottom. Did you see this problem?

    • @MadebyMitch
      @MadebyMitch  6 лет назад

      +Jimmy Gomez that is a good idea. The bottom of my gate is pretty solid. With mine, my son kinda figured out the latch. So I have added a clip so the gate can't open.
