They're Back! - Episode 162 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 26 июл 2024
- Jack and Wes are back to do more work on Arabella. Wes's earlier visits involved stacking lumber and bending frames. Now he's back for a taste of planking and we hope he returns to help out with the interior.
Jack was a part of our planking crew last year, specifically helping with some of the cedar planks, many of which have been removed. Now he's back for another shot and working with the oak, which has been much more forgiving for us to get onto the boat.
This week, you get to look over everyone's shoulders as work progresses in the boathouse.
Thank you for watching! See you next Friday.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

Great therapy for an old guy no longer able to live in the wood shop. The enthusiasm puts a smile on my face and shakes a lot of the depression out of me. Looking forward to next week. Thanks
Take care Larry. I know the feeling. Watching those young lads going makes me happy too ! Wish I could be there helping out but my old bones won't permit that. Oh well, in another life, maybe. 👍
Tell me about it. I bought some hand tools here and there when I could no longer get out there with the young guys on yhe job site building new homes, thinking maybe I could get into finer work at the home shop. I bought used tools, for the most part, and was able to restore them. But when it comes time to push a plane through the wood... alas, my older bones, and worn out muscles and joints, just aren't up to the task any more. A smiple three board dove-tail jointed dog bowl stand took me three weeks to complete. I still do what I can, but yhe rest periods between working times are getting longer and longer, and the accuracy is getting less and less as my eyes start to fade as well. I am only 50 and some auto-immune disease is taking my life away while letting me still breath (for yhe most part). Life, without living is getting quite boring. Thank God for channels like this where I can watch other's with drive and working bodies build their dreams and live a little, if only vicariously, through their adventures.
@@marcryvon Appreciate the good thoughts.
East Heaven!!! That brings back some college memories!
Excellent nice to see Jack supporting these very important boatbuilding arts.
I really loved the honesty in the last exchange at the end...
This
It’s so humbling to see such a close group of friends just happy to be around each other working towards a common goal. It’s very inspiring.
Got my t-shirts guys....so thanks to all who took my order, processed it and mailed it.
Another great video 👍👍⚓️⚓️
Am 74yrs and you are teaching me videography! That still on the strap ‘winch’ and then the still on the well used tools was truly impressive....
I have to admit to being a bit in love with that strap winch!😳
The cedar plank shattering really surprised me as well. I'm glad you adapted and overcame that little hic-up !!!!!
Progress, some cold drinks, and good conversation. Does it get any better than this? Nice work guys. The compliments from 'those more experienced' always make you feel better and fill your cup with "happy happy joy joy" drive to keep going, and a feeling that "you can do this"! I know way less than probably anyone working on this boat, but I can see the drive to keep going and learn what is necessary to complete the task and what lies beyond to learn to sail her as well. I so hope we get to travel along the learning to sail trip with you as well, Steve and Alix, but the build has been a great ride so far and I most assuredly intend to complete this ride with you as long as you keep sharing it with us. Thanks for having us along. Cheers!
Uncommonly great content week after week. Thanks. 🇨🇦
Great talented young men and women with a drive and passion to bring arabella to life...thank you for sharing with us
Always fun to watch your progress. :-)
Summer Shandy....great beer choice Jack! Awesome work guys....
Fantastic work, Alix. We love the camera work in this one.
When you finish the planking, it must feel like getting a house to lockup.... 90% done.... 90% to go.
I so very much want to be there the day you finally get to put her in the water. I'm already super emotionally invested, and have been since I stumbled on the keel pour video.
Plank, plank, plank! All planking, all day. Remarkable progress through the course of the video. It looks more and more like the ship she’s intended to be with new video.
You guys are to be commended for the effort and skills that you have shown through this project. Keep it up. Planking is almost done.
Looking good guys. Great to have the planking crew back together. Let’s git her done.
Nice work folks. Can't wait for the whiskey plank.
Been watching weekly since you poured the keel. This is one of your best videos yet! Great camera work by Alix and great editing by Ben! This one had an even bettter "documentary" feel to it than most of your videos. Excellent work, gentlemen!
You have momentum on your side right now and I hope you can keep it. The progress is awesome!
A happy Arabella Day to one and all !
And to you too!
lots of interesting insights to be had from this episode
thanks for uploading
Loved this video. Keep up the great work guys. She’s coming together beautifully!
👍👌👏 Very well done again and as always.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Interesting editing in this episode. Almost ASML like...I actually fell asleep to the sounds of hammering and the background noises. Very relaxing!
It's great to have the detailed over-the-shoulder shots.
Had a good laugh at 20:46. Thanks Steve.
I can smell the corn fermenting!
Loving the oak planking.
Hello guys, I’m still watching every week, sometimes I don’t comment. But wanted to let you know I look forward to Friday’s and watching you guys build this terrific boat.
Always the fastest 23 minutes of my week.
It's great to see a group again working together on Arabella again.
Good job Alix with your perspective filming again.
Goes so quick.
A part of my Friday ritual... Get the tea prepared for cooking, have a shower, roll my Friday night "big cigarettes" and that's it for the night... The world can go %&£% itself until I wake up on Saturday come hell, high water, thermonuclear war or zombie apocalypse... It'll have to wait or go on without me.
Man Leo makes boat building look easy
I'm still here watching and waiting for it to sail, after 2 years...
got my Akiva shirt today and just love the design on the back. Keep up the good work :D
Great camera work! Thanks!
Well done on the editing of this episode. The multiple short segments showing different angles gave the impression of a beehive of activity. 👍
Great to see more hands on hull. 👍😀
Love Alix camera work! Been watching since the lead pour and I felt the same way Jack did, "Wonder how long these guys will last before giving up?" Look at you guys now! Must feel like the home stretch.
Far from the home stretch. Don't know if you watch Salt and tar as well, but they were at this stage a long time ago and still a few months away from sailing. There's still a lot to do
@@ariebenschop4632 True... guess I was hinting at all the progress made to this point.
My first video was the lead pour too!
@@movingchips 90% done, 90% to go....
"Another two years..." as Leo Goolden of Tally Ho keeps saying. That's his and his team's 'in' joke on the likely timescale whenever anyone asks how long it'll be before the restoration/rebuild is finished.
In a similar vein, have you seen the 'Wintergatan' channel's MMX (Music Machine X)? If you haven't I recommend taking a look. It's another amazing 'build' channel with a timescale that feels like 'another two years' despite his (Martin Molin) constant progress over the last 4 years or so. Equally impressive design, quality, materials, teamwork and craft skills.
The really amazing thing is that most of the work is done in silence. Everyone knows what to do, what to expect next.
Cool progress. This video had a different feel to it somehow. Looking forward to seeing her shape once the last bit of planking is done.
We never had any doubts my friend whatsoever. Ok maybe a couple. lol
Boom! its taken awhile but im finally up to date!!
Lot going on! Good to see. Nice progress. Keep up the good work.
a rather monastic piece of film, love the aesthetic
Well... it's called Acorn to Arabella - She just wanted OAK siding and was not to be denied.
Nice "gettin it done" episode with good flow and good chat at the end. Great to see the form coming together.
Fantastic video and great progress, but I'm sure glad I don't live next door to them. Wow the noise!
You've always had great help with people that were willing to grab it & growl. Glad to see Caroline coming back.
I have a couple of questions for "Acorn to Arabella":
1) What's the biggest happy surprise since the project has started?
(Suggestions but not exclusive: something worked way better than expected, found something unexpected)
2) What's the biggest mistake since the project has started?
Thanks. I've been watching off and on since your project started. Very enjoyable and I wish you guys the best.
Just a beautiful boat.
Great work on the filming guys.
Dang, the videos are getting (artsy):D
Wow, prises de vues hallucinantes Alix ! Du grand art cinématographique ! And the editing too Ben. The silence, only the tools sounds was enough.
Dramatic fiming guys ! Du cinéma vérité à son meilleur. Bravo ! 👏
Thanks for posting and sharing. Great to see how the planking is going.
Great progress guys, great music Ben. Look forward to seeing the continuation next week.
Been a long, hard grind but you guys are getting there! Still a long way to go but nearly half way, once the hull and deck is done the rest will just happen, that will be the easy part!
Fantastic video..............again! I love fridays with you guys. One week closer to the final result. This build is going faster than we think. Maybe it's time for another episode with like a time lapse from the last one. Then we can see the progress sped up and really see how much she has grown in the last year. Keep on keeping on. Can't wait for next week.
👋🏼happy Friday, Kathy!
Cheers team!
Proper hearing protection for that hand plane usage...
Just awesome. Keep up the good work
Best way to spend 25 minutes on a Friday afternoon. Nice, even progress on the planking.
Allways nice to watch you!
Thanks for watching, Lena!
Having been following this build from the start I watched this vid and it struck me just how sleek a boat this is going to be , it has a beautiful line ..
Thank you all for another Friday night delight. Great progress on the planking. That is some beautiful oak going on Arabella. Take care all and have a great weekend.
Nice change of pace! Sights and sounds. Reminds me of the 2010 Film, Boxing Gym.
Great progress!👍👍
I enjoy your chanel and this amazing journey for many month now. If there wouldn't be this little 7.000km gap between us I would love to help on this project any free second... With ❤ from Germany!
Nice work Guys. Is looking Good.:)
Nice episode! Great camera work Alex.
Excellent stuff
That was a great video.
Hi Alix! It's your favorite and loudest neighbor Kristen! I finally found your page and HOLY SHIP! You guys are doing such amazing work! Feels like I'm jumping in at the perfect time and can't wait to keep watching the progress
One of the best episodes ever! Great job telling the story in a different way.
I love that, talking about shipwrecks "boding well" for Arabella!
Glad to see it coming together so well. It shouldn't be too long until it could safely float.
Boy you guys got him fooled🤣🤣🤣😂
Random comment for the RUclips algorithm. It looks more and more like a complete boat. Great job.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Elissa!
Part of my Friday routine now!
Great video.
great film making, more please
never disappointed with your Vids- slow and steady- good work
Can't wait for the whiskey plank! Awesome craftsmanship!
thumbs up! looking forward to the whiskey plank. weather's gonna treat you better for a bit i hope.
Looks good, a great crew and amazing results.
Thanks guys. Have a great week.
Good work guys, thanks
Great video!! Knew exactly what everyone was doing and why they were doing it. It was fun to just watch it being done. I do have to say that my heart jumped when that pattern snapped. I first thought it was a plank. 😄
I know, usually you put a coin under the mast, but ... considering the name of this series (which is iconic to say the least), it'd be nice to add an actual acorn there. :)
You should talk to bigstackD casting (RUclipsr) and see if he could cast you a coin with an acorn on...
Love watching this every week. one of my highlights!
Love the East Heaven T-shirt! Went there a lot when I was at UMass lo these many years ago.
*- Good work crew.*
Great Progress!!
Great video and work guys 👏👏👏👏👍🇬🇧
i love what you do guys! keep it up!
nice camera work on this vidoe you can clearly see that alix has put a lot of work in it... Thumbs up
Jack is a very pragmatic articulate dude. Good progress.
Always good to see what you guys are up to now.
I like the Japanese hand saws!
There was less narration and talking in this video, and I found that I kind of missed it. But, not a lot to say that hasn’t already been said. Top notch work.
