I got a Badger Renegade Velocity as a gift from my son for Christmas 2019. I have been using it for a year; now. I can't agree highly enough with you. Badger makes very good airbrushes, at very fait prices. I have had a Thayer & Chandler siphon feed that they make; for well over 20 years. Both make modeling the enjoyable experience it should be. Nice to see someone outside the US in agreement. Good show, my friend!
I got the 56th anniversary Gold (not limited edition) SOTAR 20/20. It’s trigger is forward as your limited edition is. It works great, though it needed a cleaning first, as the trigger was a little off. But something may have shifted during shipping. It’s Badger and Harder and Steinbeck for me.
Very cool. I use H&S and Sparmax. Badger supplies dried up locally, but I'll certainly keep them on the radar. Quality, value, customer service all looks great. Loving the Sotar in gold too, works well, looks superb! Almost too good looking to use! Lol.
Also been using my birthday sotar this past week. Btw, the high trigger works with most of the badger line and improved sotar precision. Paint atomization is incredible.
I got a Sotar 2020. And world of airbrush change. Very good . It replace my Badger 150, with more than 25 years. Badger replacement, like needles in Europe is very difficult.
The Badger "Birthday Event" is based on Ken Schlotfeldt's President/Owners Birthday, not the business. 😉 also, Badger has one of the best customer service policies in the industry, and their parts are also the most inexpensive out there for a name brand airbrush. i have the gold one but no intention of using it.also have other sotar 20/20.the new virion has a screw in needle packing as were the old is push in. what i like about the badger airbrushes is their soft trigger pressure.
I own 5-Badger 150 airbrush they are the best for the price and one can now find a used one for $50.00 I custom modified the one I bort back in the 1970s to work even better then it did out of the box. So there is no need to spend $100.00 or more to have a great working airbrush.
I think I run an Iwata HP-CH HiLine so slightly similar. These Badgers are good workhorse airbrushes, not with the build quality or finish of Iwata but perfectly serviceable. The Sotar is like nothing else and I really like it ergonomically, I like the Extreme Patriot too for laying down base coats, it's like an Iwata Eclipse but with a wide nozzle and high trigger. The Renegades are the closest to the Hi-line range but not that similar, the Iwata is slightly more high-end and robust, with a better MAC valve. For for price, with the offer, I have been very happy with these and may well buy more. I use Iwata, Badger and H&S, even Aztek, all are capable. Badgers are cheaper and consequently less well made, but still a joy to use and perfectly acceptable. I would recommend all, but it depends on your personal preferences. For a beginner, I would recommend Iwata, purely as they are less fiddly to get set up and running correctly - also the needle is often less exposed.
I tried a Sotar and really wanted to like it as I like the design, however it turned out to be a sputtering mess that couldn't paint straight and was like trying to drive a car without a steering wheel. I checked the needle and nozzle to see if there was damage but there was nothing obvious. I'm not sure what the problem was. To Badger's credit they sent me a new nozzle and needle free of charge but I still couldn't get it to work right.
I can see how that might happen, my view on the Sotar and many of Badger's brushes, is they are good but variable in terms of quality, or build quality, or at least simplicity of use out of the box - not really for beginners (not that you are) or its pot luck if it works exactly as intended straight away. I would call the Sotar fiddly to get used to, but very capable. It's a bit like taming a wild stallion. I have given one to a friend who is a sort of airbrush beginner to see how he gets on with it. I find the Sotar very nice ergonomically and I like it a lot, but it took a while to get it bedded in and work out its quirks, and I am very used to using all sorts of airbrushes. I'd say not for the faint-hearted. One thing, did you check that the needle was seated properly forwards. It needs to seat all the way forwards in the nozzle or you will get splatter at some point in the stroke. Also, make sure there is no paint clog in the nozzle. Once I sorted that, it got settled and works well. For the price they are good, if you are a bit of a seasoned air brush painter. I consider it one of my preferred airbrushes now it is tamed...
Oh imagine the joy you felt when they started to arrive. Shame about the customs charges, think this puts many people off from buying from the US. Let's hope this year is better for all of us .👍
To be honest the waiting was part of the fun, as the anticipation built. These days everything is so instant, Prime, downloads, Deliveroo, it's nice and analogue to have wait patiently for something, to slowly see it being built, packaged, sent, the extra three months in US customs for batch one made their arrival all the sweeter. I had already budgeted for some import charges, luckily the delayed first batch were spared any UK customs dues. Most of the charges are the Royal Mail handling fee that's £8-£12 in itself...
I don't know how I missed this. I am looking for a fine airbrush. I mostly use Iwata brushes for the 36 years. But now I am finding parts issues. I found the BADGER SOTAR 20/20 for $118 US. I am very hard on my guns. Would this one be a good sub for my Iwata?
I have the Khrome Renegade and it is Awsome. I have a Sotar 20/20 as well. But I have a Question. What was your PSI and Thinner Ratio on your Mission Models Test with the 20/20 I use mission model paints, and I could not get mine to spray anywhere close to the lines and precision you got. So please could you tell us your settings you did to achieve this. Thanks.
Yeah I find my SOTAR clogs easily but with the same needle set up my Krome sprays great. I put it down to thinning paints properly as the SOTAR is really an artists brush and should be used with inks and washes while the Krome is a custom paint job brush and can handle thicker paints.
When I looked back at this, I can't remember honestly, but to me it doesn't look that thinned, maybe a small bit of thinners ( a few drops). You can see the paint going on thick in the video. Suggest you start straight out of the bottle at 2.5 bar and reduce to an ideal operating pressure of 1.5bar. If it spits and splutters, the paint is too thick and so dilute it gently until it sprays smooth. You will need to empty paint cup and spray through with thinners each time you try a new paint/thinner ration to know it's an accurate test. It's all trial and error I'm afraid but I literally loaded some paint, few drops of thinner, backflushed and began spraying with the SOTAR so it implies to me the Mission Model paints should be pretty good without too much thinning - at least in a SOTAR. Start with high pressure on a test piece and then lower the pressure to see what happens.
@@lordseriqolm4898 Here is a trick that may help you use a small piece of sponge soaked in windex in your off hand. Use it to clean your tip every once in awhile just a quick grab pinch the needle it'll clean that tip off and keep spraying fine.
Hi, just a quick question about the Gold Sotar 2020, does the nozzle on yours unscrew completely? Both me and a friend bought the gold one and only the very front part of the nozzle unscrews but not the back part that contains the needle “cone”. I have read on some forums that the newest ones ar welded and cannot be removed.
Good question. I've not taken it apart to that extent. There was definitely a difference in construction from the black one but it appears to have a thread at the base of the paint cup for the nozzle assembly but I honestly couldn't say if it is welded or not at this stage - I hope not!
Scale War Machines I will email Badger and ask them about it. I am not sure if it is supposed to be like that or not. Cos other Badgers you need to change that little needle cone/collar if you change the needle size. But if it is welded in place then it is a one size only airbrush, which wouldn’t bother me but its a need to know thing. Can you see if you can unscrew yours or not?

I have one of the early SOTAR 20/20 -2 fine airbrush’s from 2005 .It’s been my go to airbrush for super fine detail work and I own 4 other “Japanese” types which I cannot get to do the fine work the SOTAR does. It’s flawless in my opinion.tho I have seen reviews on line that trash them out right….just don’t buy into this B.S.

I own a Sotar 20/20, it's a really fantastic airbrush. I would recommend getting one as your second airbrush, first one should be a real cheap beater.

To protect the exposed needle simply retract it some 10 milimeters when not in use. 😉
I've tried using badger airbrushes. Not a fan.just too finicky for me. I use iwata, grex, and Tamiya. Mostly its grex because of my arthritis.

How does this compare to the iwata hp-b plus hi line?

I notice all the airbrushes you highlight are gravity/top feed. I have under bottle fed brush, am I at a disadvantage?
Not really, whatever works for you. Bottom-fed is good for base coating and general painting tasks.

Badger quality is going downward. They don't take much pride in the quality of workmanship in the products they sell.
