  • Here I test a Badger 105 Airbrush. I have a few friends that swear by these and I wanted to try one out for myself and for my viewers. While it appears to be an average quality airbrush it performs great. It's not going to win any detail contest but it does lay down a smooth coat of paint as good as I've seen. Check out my results using different types of paint.

Simple solution. Store the brush with the needle pulled back into the brush.
You would like the Badger Krome and Sotar.
The teflon seal you showed is actually between the cup and trigger. The new design allows easier replacement and adjustment if needed.

Just a fyi. The name on the box hasn't changed with the new needle bearing update. My patriot is over a decade old and it's the same box
What you missed out on and what trips up most new badger users is that badger backs off the needles for transit and recommends lubing the needle before seating it correctly. Add to that if you are going to put cleaning tools in there you use paper dental tips. Use of those wire things damages the bearings

Very good review. My first airbrush was a 105 from a few years ago and it has been an absolute workhorse of a tool. I even have a 105 with a super detail conversion kit which gives me the same airbrush but with a .3mm needle.
The only other upgrade I would recommend is Badger's High Roller trigger. It's raised up by quite a bit and lets you get a finer trigger pull for more detail work.

Badger is the only airbrush I own. Started using them back in the early 90's and became friends with the owner and never looked back. Iwata does not impress me even though they are very popular. I had an HP-CS Eclipse and was not impressed with the hype. I had 12 Badger airbrushes at one time including the Sotar 2020, Krome, Renegade Velocity, 100LG, Omni 4000 and others. Loved them all. Great company, great owner and the best customer service in the business.

Have a suggestion for better finger-trigger control. Hardware stores sell kitchen cabinet silicon bumpers, these items are meant to replace the ones that fall off. These silicon bumpers come as a dome or flat top shape and peel and stick to your airbrush trigger. Cheers

also its easy on the 105 to loosen the needle, pull the trigger back some and tighten down the needle. so u dont have to moderate your trigger pull for those long paint cessions.

  • @petersauvageau9792
    @petersauvageau9792 3 года назад

So the card included in the badger Patriot 105 states that the needle bearing is the 50-046 like the other badger airbrushes. However, the actual needle bearing is the R-007 for the R-0023 inner seal screw assembly. I learned this the hard way by trialing the 50-046 needle bearing. The 50-046 does not allow the needle to move in the bearing. I also contacted Badger regarding this issue, and this was affirmed. So when you need to replace the needle bearing, use the R-007. These part numbers are the same as the Renegade series. Thanks for your time.

If you want back pressure to clean or mix paint in the pot unscrew that end nozzle/spray regulator at the very front a little bit. Then pull back on the trigger just like you're painting and it'll bubble for you. When I'm cleaning mine I like to pull back on the trigger ALL the way back while I have cleaner in the pot then put a paper towel over the nozzle and apply pressure so it starts to bubble. The needle retracts all the way into the brush so you don't run the risk of touching the needle. It cleans that end nozzle too while I'm at it.

    • @LemurKrazy

Using acrylics even the shallow protector it comes with gets in the way. The 0.3mm detail set comes with an even better less obstructed cap like the sotar.
I'm removing tip dry with acrylics every 5 minutes when painting for long sessions - removing a protector just wastes time.

I bought Badger 100 (basicaly reviewed airbrush with not drilled backend cover) after two chinesee low ends, HS Evolution and Hansa 301. With 0,23mm needle (IIRC or is it 0,28?) it is very solid airbrush I use often. It is quite heavy when compared to other brands or types (I also have Ivatas, Krome etc.) and especially compared to HS Evolution comparing the weight is like comparing heaven and bagpipes. But that should be not so much a problem for revieved 105 Patriot as is in the case of 100 Patriot line. Anyway I forced a friend to make a CNC back end from aluminium. It is much lighter but quite nose heavy now.
Anyway I use it often, because it just works fine with any paint I have ever used. The trigger is acceltably precise, valve is working fine. I often recomend it when somebody asks for starting airbrush, because pricing is very near compared to IWATA NEO and other starting airbrushes and in my opinion it is almost indestructible and with 0,35mm needle has no problem with any paint. 0,23 needle is very fine too, so no problem with details.
This AB is awesome in my opinion. Only problem I ever had with Badgers is the weight.

I Picked up a 105 Arrow about a year ago. It’s basically a Patriot but It comes solely with the 0.3 needle and I believe it also has a smaller paint cup than the Patriot. Regardless, It’s my favourite brush. Very Even spray pattern and no it doesn’t take long for full coverage.
I Also run the Badger 150, an old favourite, and I have an old Model Master brush I’ve had since 1991. It’s non functional but it was my first so I keep it around. Lmao.

I've had the Badger 105 for about 6 months. I use it all the time for primers and Mission Models paint. i have to thoroughly clean the airbrush after each use, otherwise the needle sticks or the spay pattern is not good. I thought that the plastic cup cap was a cost cutting item, as all my other airbrushes have a metal cap. Nice review.

No adjustable stop on the back is a deal killer for me. There are times I need to dial that motion way down in detail work. When I set up my Iwata HP-BCS siphon feed, I got an adjustable stop for it. I'm beginning to look for a large cup gravity feed with a .20 or .25, perhaps a .30 needle nozzle for fine detail work. I would love to stay with Iwata, but now at nearly 70, I am more conscious of budget, so am looking at other brands, hopefully with the close to the detail ability of a Super Micron but with a better price point.

Zup MR REX, love the video, very useful and informative. I own one of these Badger, and with my 3 kits of painting experience, I can say that it wasn’t a good one, if you remember me, talking to you about “orange peel”, I was using the badger, you mentioned a lot of paint coming out, even with a very low pressure(and mine came with the black back tip which is supposed to be a smaller needle), not good for beginners, in my humble opinion, but I’m only painting gundam kits. Also when fully cleaning the airbrush, the “back lever” (that’s how it’s called) is a pain in neck to hold the trigger and that part and thread the needle. I actually purchased an Iwatta, from Spray Gunner, one of your other airbrush recommendations 😎👍🏼and it has been a wonderful and enjoyable experience. Once again thanks a lot for all the work and time you spend making these videos. P.s: I have the Extream 105 and it comes with a black end

I just wanted to thank you for recommending the PS290 and giving reassurance on the compressor needs. I just got it and it is fantastic. It works perfectly on my 3 liter compressor.
Can you spray alclad chrome over Stynylrez? It looks like a nice glossy black....

Awesome workhorse. Had a Patriot for a few years now and it is still going strong and my goto brush. Amazing what you can do with it. I detest the crown caps on any brush and always remove (if possible) just need to be very very careful! Thanks
BTW Doesn't it have 'Patriot' embossed on the side of the brush?

I was looking to buy my first airbrush from amazon or something but this morning I picked up a badger crescendo 175 with extra needles/nozzles, cups and hoses at a yard sale for $10, it does use siphon cups but right now it has a side gravity feed installed.. I dont know anything about airbrushes.. is this a good airbrush for beginner painting gunpla? I'm gonna scoop up the mr. Hobby paints you recommended to run through it

Lol you just freaked out a whole plethora of viewers who probably have no idea why there's no spray head ;) I saw a few who said this was deal breaker having no clue why yet buying equipment. Great video as always!
BTW This is General/Heavy duty Airbrush designed to paint large areas quickly not for painting the Eyeballs of Warhammer miniatures lol.
P.S. These 105's ship with the .5mm needle/nozzle (Blue Needle back) but you can buy the full kit that comes with the .3mm (Black needle knob) and a larger .7mm (Silver Needle Knob) which is basecoat/primer body painters dream. I have 2 of these and would say kick it up to 20psi and yes with the .5 and .7 setups this thing drinks paint like nobodies business. The .3mm is a good choice and will still push thicker enamels properly thinned. All around a great brush when used for it's intended purpose. You can decent detail with the .3mm but this is really for painting large areas quickly, though you can blend/fade camouflage with the #3 easily enough and it does lay a good line though nothing close to hairline of course.

I use the badger patriot 105 and paint does sometime leak to the trigger. I do like to spray at 15 psi. You were using the fine needle (blue head). I have most of the top quality AB but I want to master the 105 before I go to another one. You sprayed a Vallejo game air at 15 psi. I thought you said that the Vallejo model air works best with a larger needle and at a higher pressure 25 psi. Why did it work here at 15 psi? Thanks for posting.

If yours is newer with the screw on the back side of the teflon needle seal, turn the screw in slightly and you can fix that leak on you own, easily.

It all comes down to the design of the nozzle, here on this one it just let's a ton more paint through a d in turn that helps with a thicker acrylic such as Vallejo.

A paint question. I am very interested in the Badger STYNYLREZ Gloss Black Primer. I am a model railroader and will be painting a fleet of locomotives black and yellow. Is this gloss black a suitable paint for a finish coat that will have decals applied and then a flat finish over that? Is there a better option for this? Thanks, Andy K

Mr. Barbatos Rex. Which would you recommend for spraying primers and clearcoats; the Badger 105 or Procon Boy Single action that you reviewed ? I have the GSI Creos PS270 as my main gun and I'm loving it. But want something that can spray the thicker stuff.

Hold your finger on the trigger properly and you would get better control of the spray. It will paint finer lines than you did with the first paint you used.

Thanks you for the review! You are the one I trust. The Patriot 105 is maybe going to be the replacement for my Paasche Talon GF which really sucks, crappy... Got some bubbles in the cap all the time, got it for camouflage purposes but too mush promblems with it... Can someone suggest me alternatives (or solutions for my Paasche?)

    • @epgrandpa9055
      @epgrandpa9055 2 года назад

I had the “bubble” problem with a Paasche VL I just picked up. Drove me nuts…until I read the “troubleshooting” section of the manual. The solution to that problem is to crank down really hard on the air cap and nozzle using that little wrench they include. That seems counterintuitive since most airbrush fittings are finger tight. Not this one. I used pliers to tighten down the bigger hex nut and MAN!!! What a difference!! Works like a charm! It’s nuts how much that tiny extra turn changed things.Give that a try before you give up on it.

You missed a great feature that it has, in fact most of Badger's airbrushes have it. The needle safety. Whenever you're done you just pull the trigger all the way back and slide it to either side into the side cut outs and the needle tip is protected.

Broke the thread on my Iwata Revolution Nozzle, ordered a new one, if i can't get the new one to work because of the thread if part of it got stuck i may order this since it has a compression fit nozzle and different needle sizes, i mostly just paint bases with the airbrush and will try to do shading next so it will prob be good for me.

Nice idea about using an inexpensive brush for additional nozzle and paint cup cleaning.
(Wonder what the 0.3mm needle version of the 105 would be like, performance wise).
Just wondering, I thought “stynylrez” (sp?) recommended a much higher air pressure for spraying the badger primers?

The manual that comes with the 105 Patriot says to set the psi to 15. I was shocked at first because of every airbrush I've used before it calls for a much higher psi but it sprayed everything perfectly at their requested PSI

Both are great but taking the price as a factor the Badger is great. Also the Badger has 3 different needle sizes you can swap out. The Badger is perfect for Primer and auto model colors. 👍
