I grew up making Scale Military Models in the 70's ... we built Models with none of the kit you see today ... it was literally Glue and Paint - decals were pushed about with a soft toothpick and the tip of your finger. It's great to build up a tool kit but people would be amazed at how much you can get done with little to nothing also. I say this with the take away that I hope people don't see having gear as a barrier to just getting started on the Hobby - you can do a lot with next to nothing. Having the right tools for the job however makes light work, precise work and really NICE work ... easier!
Having YoTube makes a big difference Like many, I started building scale models and sculpting clay with almost no tools and no information. Getting into these things now, with a bit of spare coin and access to these RUclips videos, makes every thing easier and quickens the learning pace, as well as the spending pace. :) Whilst searching for my fifty litre air tank I found a dozen model planes in a storage closet, WWII era that are mostly unfinished and and not painted. Christmas in August. a chance to practice with the air brush while having to buy only new paint. Having access to people such as yourself makes the learning process much easier
I gotta say you're like the nicest guy on you tube. The most harmless model car builder in the USA. I can't really fault you on anything keep up the good work my friend
I've been building models most of my life but always enjoy watching these types of videos because there is always something to learn. So glad I watched this as I have been buying the Tamiya pointed cotton swabs for years not knowing you could literally buy thousands of them for the same price as 1 pack of Tamiya! You'll save me a fortune!
This is a great video. It exposes people to a whole range of tools and accessories for modeling, that you wouldn’t necessarily know they exist. Most people new to the hobby only know 3 things. Glue, xacto ,and maybe nippers.
I like the pop lid type bottles to store rubbing alcohol for cleaning up panel lines. It makes applying it to the Q-tips so much easier. 100% recommend.
Great and terrifically comprehensive survey of very useful tools, esp. needed by someone (myself) just coming back to the hobby after a few decades layoff.I went to Amazon for a number of these, and was presented with a variety of choices, types, & price ranges for every budget.Thank you.
Just caught this video today. I know you made it three years ago but just starting back into the hobby and I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for taking the time and effort.
Fantastic video! There are too many others out there focusing too much on YT hits instead of information. So glad this was more than "You're gonna need brushes, a knife, and paint." I'm somewhat new to this, so this was great to expose me to tools of the trade I didn't even know existed.
I like you because this is exactly how my brain works too. Overloaded with so much and so many choices ... i was going broke in other hobbies trying everything out .. and here we are. I love painting and i really like the building so im stocking up on most of this. Thank you!
You can buy extra tips and caps for your ZAP CA... If you put your clogged and gunked up tips in a jar of acetone overnight, they will be spotless in the morning, Great show!
I guess you are a kind person. This video is very good information for beginners. PS. You guys gotta have many super fine brushes with cheap or middle prices, that is better than have few expensive super fine brushes, just on my opinion.
I modified tweezers with a Dremal tool by grinding a concave relief into the gripping surface to keep round parts from launching out when picked up. Also helping hands with the two articulating alligator clips and magnifying glass is handy even to hold parts for painting. Modeling clay is used for holding parts too.
This video is awesome man. I'm trying to get back into scale modeling after 30 years, and these recommendations were exactly the kind of information I was needing and looking for.
This is a great video!!! The ONLY recommendation I’d make, is more for you than us. Take the time to put Amazon affiliate links in your description for every Amazon product you recommend. We can easily buy the stuff you recommend, and you’ll get a kickback. If you don’t want the money, you could always do giveaways for Amazon gift cards, but if I were you, I’d use the affiliate payment to buy more supplies or products to test!
Excellent info. Just returning to model making. Got so inspired by your video that I stopped it after first 15 min and ran out to Hoppy Lobby. Beginning tool buildup and haven’t even started model. Great info.
Another outstanding video, you always give out not just one option but usually two or three. makes it easier when you go to the hobby store you kind of know what you're looking for.
Some very nice recommendations indeed. And yes, those Raser are just glorified glass nail file... avoid them. Why not use glass pipettes? The markings are clearer and the best part about them is that they are easily cleaned - also double as stirrer at times. I bought a dozen of glass pipettes ranging from 1ml to 20ml and never had to worry about pipette ever. Yes, it cost much more initially but in a couple of years they will pay for themselves - as long as you dont drop them :P p/s: I am cheap, I just recycle runners as paint mixer most of the time. Just cut a stick, heat up one end and flatten it if needs be, stir and throw.
I literally put together my kits for almost 20 years with crazy glue, a nail clipper, some nail sanding sticks and testors orange tube glue. The only paint i had access to was common spray cans from a hardware store.
Finding the runner stand is more than a notion. It is a revelation, and a game changer for organizing scale model builders...but it is not easy to find. I'm ordering the next best thing on Amazon.
You have a serious dose of gadgetitis. Seriously though, the availability of such a broad range of specific items and tools for the serious/professional hobby modeler, is impressive. I'm an Irish sculptor and I frequently cast multiples of my figures for painting, and am more than grateful for the gamut of of gadgets and mediums available. Love your vids, as they're a great approach to practicality and organisation, focused on the task(s) at hand. Keep those little gems coming 👍.
I paint a lot of warhammer models/do commission work. You have definitely earned my sub. I love watching scale model youtubers to see what sort of stuff i can cross-pollinate into my hobby. A lot of this i already use, but that flex sander looks magical, few other items too.
Some tools I started using after seeing a nail saloon girl at work, is the Nail art tools she was using. I got them from a large river in South America, there are dotting tools which are great for painting small hard to get to spots and they are good for placing parts when gluing. There are a quite few Nail art tools that can how uses in modelling.
Hi Rex, I’m a grandmother who does craft with her grandkids….interested for my 11yr old grandson. Learned from you and bought a compressor and airbrush. Was going to use craft paint like you showed us. Telling my son about all of this….and he brings me a big box of Tamiya paints….about a hundred jars plus thinner, gloss and a couple of Japanese models one no English, that he picked up at a sale. Older stuff one jar was marked$2.50. A few of mr color was dry but I put mr color thinner and am rehydrating them. Would love to see you builds model for us. I watch a lot of videos to learn and yours is excelllent. A couple of items to checkout is Tim Holtz scissors he has 3 sizes the small one is pointed, sharp the med one cuts metal leather etc. Hobby Lobby has them in the craft section under Tim Holtz items they are 40% off often so $6-7. Also nail painting has twizzers, tiny tiny brushes. I buy eyeliner brushes on Amazon in bulk. Also very small rubber like spatula to crape out jars also Amazon.
Thank you so much for the tips. I will visit Hobby Lobby tomorrow morning and do a little shopping 😉 So wonderful to hear you sharing the hobby with children, I love hearing that. Once I'm done testing all the paints, I'll try to shift to model building. I have to change my camera set up and what not before doing so. Thank you for the great feedback and thank you for watching. You made my day 👍
Liking the flex-file so I made one out of alloy bar and it works great, thanks for that one. Looks like the Zip Kicker is the same principal as Mitre fast for using on Super Glue but that can turn thing a bit white. Does the Zip Kicker do that ?? Once saw a video that said you can use sodium bicarbonate and it'll do the same acceleration ! Haven't tried that one yet though. The tooth flossing brushes are brilliant for cleaning air brushes and like you said they come in several sizes by colour codes. . . the ones they supply with the metal ends do scratch your airbrush for certain !!! The runner stand is a new one on me and it looks absolutely fabulous. Definitely getting that set. Really enjoyed watching your video even though I've been modelling for years. Just goes to show that there's always something new to learn.
hey bud, baking soda and water or alcohol mixture works awesome for a super glue kick starter to, thats what i use. and its instant as well, use like a tablespoon of baking soda to a half cup or cup of water or the isopropal* alcohol. works great and heck of a lot cheaper ; )
I’ve seen quite a few of these kinds of videos. None have kept my attention and taught me so many new awesome things man! Killer job! Fast, to the point, and extremely informative! You sir, have yourself a new subscriber! Thank you!
I live like 30 mins from megahobby over the bridge. They are a great place to go when i am in a pinch. Only downside is they do seem to be priced higher than most other places and are often out of stock of essentials.
Duplicolor is the best primer i used, very fine result, their paints also aren't bad, gonna order some Vallejo Plastic Putty for filling seam lines and pin holes, i currently used something similar to spackle paste used for drywall to cover up 3d print imperfections.
I learned a lot from this video and I’ve been a modeler for at least 60 years. Can you expand a little on the tools, especially tools for working with small wiring like decoder wire, 22 gauge for instance. Also your soldering tools and drills and taps etc. If that video already exists in your library could you provide a link?
I tried to find those amazing mixing cups on amazon Germany but I could not find anything so small and with a cup. I am talking about the ones on the video, not at the amazon link. Very nice video :)
For all new modelers, young and old let me tell you that you don't need 90% of the stuff showed here. Scale modeling is a process and with time you will know what you need. Get the basics and start building kits instead of becoming a collector of scale modeling stuff.
literally here for my first gundam. i am just just picking up a cutting mat, exacto blade, clippers (NOT godhands), some sandpaper, and maybe some tweezers. and that’s abt it for now. everything else you build up gradually
Yes, I'm starting to work on that. Just got approved by Amazon for affiliation links a couple weeks ago and I'm starting to go back and place them. I could use the extra cash for testing more products for sure.
someone's prolly said already but just in case, OLFA may be also available at your local sewing store, they started (afaik) in cutting for quilters and the like, that's how I know of them anyway. Funnily enough a lot of my quilting/crafting supplies do double duty for scale modeling/miniatures I wish I'd known about the canopy glue during my last build =/ maybe it's just old, but my Testors clear canopy just didn't work (hold) Those runner stands are def something I need too - thanks for the video! enjoyed
New subscriber returning to the hobby. I’m a retired aircraft mechanic. Your videos are fantastic. Will definitely pick up some if not most of your recommendations on the products. I want to get a new compressor for my airbrushing. The one I’ve used is an oldie and very noisy. Do you have any recommendations for a new one? Very glad I found your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and videos Artie 😊😊
Well that's you costing me money again, stop finding these must haves lol, looking forward to starting the kit in the new year, that and another load of kits I've stashed, but the spit is top of the pile ,keep up the good work👍
I love all these videos you make. Your enjoyment of the hobby shows and it's infectious. Thanks! Also, I love all the glue for testing purposes... that's like me and all my paints for my minis ;D
I like that mat. I have a Fiskars white and grey mat. It's a great mat but the white and grey colors start to mess with your eyes after a short while when working with white and black plastics and I think its the white/grey/white/grey grid that does it instead of a solid color with lines.
Thank You for taking time to put this video together. I'm gonna start this hobby and I'll be attempting WW1 & WW2 fighter planes. If Brush painting, what would you recommend as Best paints to brush with, Acrylics etc? Thanks
Wish you could tell how to remove old glue residue and how to soften glue holding two parts together. Maybe the oven cleaner will work. I have removed old paint from models down to the original plastic color. Can't use too much or it can soften plastic.
Can you tell what the black mat is on your workbench? Not the cutting mat but the expanse of black covering your entire bench. I have a nice table in my office I’d like to use for modeling but want to cover it with something to protect it. Great video!
What is the difference between a surefacer and a primer? I'm getting back into model building, and a lot of the things you discuss are new to me to say the least.
Looking forward to the next hour of learning from you! edit: Well that was fun. I love tools and gadgets. I'm looking forward to some of your gundam building vids. Personally, I don't do gundams or cars, but I just started doing warhammer miniatures. Many of your tips are helpful for all model builders. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I always learn something from your vids.
What do you use for a primer when using acrylic paints? Through an airbrush? But you just use a spray paint enamel primer or what do you use for primer everything has to be primed before it's painted are the colors don't come out right.
Some excellent tips. I’ve been in hobby for about 36 years and still managed to learn something. One nitpick though...you didn’t credit the clothesline hanger...shame.
Great video on products needed, used along with finding in departments once only reserved for beauty, paint section in WalMart, etc Link for brown bottles with glass eye dropper. Link or product number for Tamiya empty paint mix bottles. Thanks again.. feels great getting back into model making after many years absent
The quick painting demo misses a good brush cleaner to be used after cleaning the brush with thinner. I use Davinci brush soap (I only use acrylic paints) but "the Masters" brush cleaner and preserver is very nice for oil based paints too - it will even clean old oil and paint from brushes a bit. On the wax tip parts picker: the metal end (with the small tube) is indeed for small parts. Stick the tube in the wax and you have a very fine tip to pick up the smallest parts. I am a big fan of the Vallejo primer, especially the acrylic polyurethane surface primer for the airbrush is amazing (yes I know, you're not that much of a Vallejo fan) CA glue (super glue) comes in different types: thin, thick and gel. They all have their use from time to time. You can fill cracks in a model with "glass bubbles" and a little drop of thin CA glue. Put a piece of sellotape on the rear side if the crack is open. This gives a nice hard surface. "glass bubbles" is a filler material sold mostly by companies that sell epoxy resins and glass fiber stuff, try get a bit from someone using this stuff. A small bottle lasts a lifetime.
Just wanted to share because I've never seen anyone do this. What I use for nippers are cat claw trimmers from the Dollar Tree they cut pretty close and for $1 they're definitely worth it been using the same ones for over 2 years
I know you live in RI, but do you live on the Island itself? the only hobby shop I know of on the island is Newport Hobby House and would like to know of those other stores you mentioned.
The 2 stores nearest me are Appanuage Hobby and AA Hobby. In Fall River there's Gundam Pros and the store I visit the most is Harry's in Norton, Massachusetts. They have a great stock of car and modern aircraft kits and almost half of them are rare kits
Hi, love your video! I am going back to modeling after almost 30 years and your input is fantastic, much needed to kick off. I cannot find the elastic sanding paper/film. Can you tell me where to look for it? Many thanks

The right tools are great but it’s doesn’t replace passion and ingenuity passion for the hobby will get you father than any tool
I'm old school. All you need is a good nail file kit, alligator clips an exacto blade and snips to cut parts off the tree.
Gold. We have an Arabic saying : the stick in the hand of hero is a sword.

Another great hobby video. Building since 1966 and thanks to social media I still can learn some new tricks and tips.

So many tools I learn existed from this video. Thank you!!
Thanks Emily, I'm filming an in depth look at my paint racks now to go up today plus a bonus paint test video, a 2 in 1 day bonus 😀
i love the way you get straight to the point and steam through all the stuff you want to show us
Thanks, I try my best. Pretty new at this stuff. I try to make videos I would like to see myself. Thanks for watching
Great video for an old retired guy getting back in to modeling.

I like the clothespin holding the paint brush. Thanks for the video.

I modified tweezers with a Dremal tool by grinding a concave relief into the gripping surface to keep round parts from launching out when picked up. I like that mat. I have a Fiskars white and grey mat. It's a great mat but the white and grey colors start to mess with your eyes after a short while when working with white and black plastics and I think its the white/grey/white/grey grid that does it instead of a solid color with lines.
Yeah, I shifted over to black work matts, makes a big difference on my eyes
Thanks for the tips. Have a great day.
Thank You for taking time to put this video together. I'm gonna start this hobby and I'll be attempting WW1 & WW2 fighter planes. If Brush painting, what would you recommend as Best paints to brush with, Acrylics etc? Thanks
That wing gundam is amazing
Great picks, thanks!
Thanks for these great modeling tips, I'm getting back into it the hobby after a lone time off, sure has come a long way.
Thanks for watching. Be sure to watch my earlier video on more tips that are more about saving money

Excellent video thank you for posting
Very cool video!... Thank you!
Great job! I picked up tips for my 3D printing, if you can believe it! Thanks again!
Your welcome buddy
Seen a couple of your vids now mate ,,, Fantastic, and many thanks 🙏 No BS model channel,,,,, cheers fella 🇬🇧👍👌👍🇬🇧
One of my favorite model hobby channels. You give the best tips my dude, thanks!
Wow thanks my friend, you guys make my day. Thank you for watching.
Great video. You turned me onto some new supplies 👍
Love supplies, I think a bit more than the kits at this point. You just can't beat a great tool for the job. Thanks for watching
Now this is a class you don't mind attending 😉
I have most of already still have to get more I think I will be getting those runner stands next
Excellent well detailed video. Any link to the flat mixing cups with the spout and covers?
What do you use for a primer when using acrylic paints? Through an airbrush? But you just use a spray paint enamel primer or what do you use for primer everything has to be primed before it's painted are the colors don't come out right.
Excellent video very very informative thanks for posting
Thanks for watching
Great video but can you link me to the acrylic shelves. Please
Thanks for this, some great ideas and options!🍻👍🍺
Nice tips. Thanks for sharing
I'm definitely into the hobby. I love you and this channel thanks man!
Love you too buddy 😉 thanks for watching
Some excellent tips. I’ve been in hobby for about 36 years and still managed to learn something. One nitpick though...you didn’t credit the clothesline hanger...shame.
Z series blades can be bought at staples as well.
Great video on products needed, used along with finding in departments once only reserved for beauty, paint section in WalMart, etc
Link for brown bottles with glass eye dropper.
I am a big fan of the Vallejo primer, especially the acrylic polyurethane surface primer for the airbrush is amazing (yes I know, you're not that much of a Vallejo fan)
CA glue (super glue) comes in different types: thin, thick and gel.
What I use for nippers are cat claw trimmers from the Dollar Tree they cut pretty close and for $1 they're definitely worth it been using the same ones for over 2 years
Thanks dude.... Very helpful. Cool products
Have you heard of Flashmaster xacto blades? they're flexible so I guess can contour to car bodys and curves etc.. Havent tried them myself yet
I have a set of them on my bench.ill review them soon
@@barbatosrex9473 ... the best around! look forward to seeing it. thanks for all you do for us newbies
Keep up the good stuff. What do you feel is your best and strongest glue?
I also got the quick release blade :)
Many thanks

For cutting decals, I use needlepoint scissors.
