It is interesting because this isn’t really accurate to the real mad cow disease. It took about 5 years for people to begin to display symptoms and then it was 100% lethal

Another fun fact. Lethality in this game essentially calculates how long it takes for an infected person to die, as infected cannot recover without the cure in Plague Inc (unless you're doing Cure Mode, in which case Prion is given an automatic 100% Fatality Rate
Creators of a Plague Inc. had to do a lot of simplifications and compromises when it comes to prions. In real life they are literally uncurable and can manifest spontaneously, but can be transmitted only by ingested. Moreover, some people are just blatantly resistant or immune to it. Although there are rumors about the possibility of prions transmitting through air, in which case we're screwed
Prion diseases are also incurable (at least at the time of me writing this). Genuinely now idea how you’d cure widespread protein misfolding in the brain on a massive scale. Tracking infection sources would also suuuuck given it’s ridiculous incubation rate.

I was saved by the fish once too. I got detected super early and Caribbean shut its port before I could infect it. I wanted to give up, but decided to keep going as if nothing happened. When I only had around 100 000 people left alive someone in Caribbean ate infected fish and I immediately devolved some lethality so I could infect the country, and managed to complete the scenario. It felt really really good. This was on normal and I can't even finish the scenario on brutal becuase it's so darn hard.

I love how Pravus explains his strategies. Many of his plays have also carried me to winning a lot of different scenarios (as well as just the normal disease types)

fr how do scientists in this game do even 1% of cure progress while confused, with dementia, paralyzed, with no sleep, while insane, while in a coma, etc.
I gave up after 4 attempts in normal and 2 in casual. I realized that if I could not beat it in casual there was no way in hell I was ready for normal. I'm actually still trying to beat it in freaking casual.... *Sobs forever*

I remember doing a scenario and waiting for Genetic Reshuffle 3 and saving up. They finished the cure just as I had saved enough. I did it anyway. It worked.

Well,even if they make 100% cure and start curing people,you still can reshuffle or take a symptom like coma and they will have to make it to 100% before they are able to start curing people again. And those who were cured can still be infected again if cure is not 100%.

Omg...your videos are so fun to watch. Your reaction to your victory here is memorable to say the least. I found this game probably a year or two ago. Played for a while and gave it up. After stumbling upon some of your other videos I have reinstalled the game. You seem to have a different version. Looks different. Anyway, had to leave a comment and say hello after watching this one.
It only took me 3 attempts on mega brutal, I just bought a lot of transmission and traits with mutation chances, therefore, I can focus on ability traits, which really helped me so yea, but good one, Pravus, you really did well
damn! gg, I haven't played mad cow yet, but I've herd that it's pretty crazy, been trying to look for some strategies before I dive head first, cause I know Ill just end up playing it over and over till I got it, and I'd end up driving myself crazy, thanks man, didn't actually know severity worked like that.. It explains A LOT! 🤔
Mad cow's disease is the "common" name for Bovine Spongiform Encelopathy (or BSE). This condition on humans is called *variant* Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease or CJD-v (the variant refers specifically to the one that is acquired by consuming infected tissue)
The BSE outbreak that happened in England started due to, as a meaning of cutting costs, cows were fed with sheep remains, and sheep were already commonly enough affected by Scrapie (their version of the prion infection), so cattle meant for human consumption developed BSE, which passed consequently to human hosts. Prion diseases have a very slow onset and are hard to detect for the very same reason (nowadays can be detected by clinical exams such as the Western Blot, but coming up to even suspect a prion infection is the tough part)
Prions are misfolded, anomalous proteins that cause other nearby proteins to misfold as well, and its onset in the brain results in a sponge like texture in the brain, giving it its name of *spongiform* encelopathy (sponge-like brain pathology).
Unlike what the name "mad cow" might make you expect, no one goes in some sort of rage, the affected person or animal suffers brain deteroriation and starts losing mobility and physical control, in its last stage the host will be unable to move and will die when it reaches the point it can't even function properly. Prion diseases are a death sentence basically, and due to the nature of the pathogen (a protein) medical advances haven't gone too far into the matter, tried measures aren't able to cross the hemato-encephalic barrier (the barrier that works as some sort of firewall for your brain) while the prion has no issues. Most places have to get rid of cow brains and neurological tissue just in case, English veal has been unbanned in most countries relatively recently (I believe the last to lift said ban was France) and blood banks mostly rejected blood from people that spent time in England or Europe when the outbreak happened (this ban is also starting to get lifted as the pandemic left us short of blood donors in general). Some other interesting facts about prions is that soil that was used by infected sheep or cattle is deemed risky for further animal raising, as proteins are VERY HARD to actually destroy. They tried sterilizing procedures for medical equipment in contact with prions, but heat will only briefly inactivate the protein and said equipment is rendered unusable and has to be destroyed. Prions are also behind that moose disease that also had some sort of sensationalistic name (something in the like of zombie moose? Thrashing syndrome? Something like that, honestly I forgot) and has suspected links with Alzheimer's, though nothing can be confirmed as of yet, there's also suspicion that there might be multiple types of prions.

It's not even a case of basically. All known Prion diseases in both humans and animals are 100% lethal so far as we know, and are completely incurable. We know of a few others besides vCJD such as Familial Fatal Insomnia and Kuru. They also are usually only transmissible through the injection or consumption of contaminated fluids or tissues, most often brain matter, but it can also spread through blood and muscle tissue (though cases from consumption of muscle tissue are usually believed to be due to that meat being contaminated with brain matter). Some evidence suggests that prion-infected matter can be aerosolized and spread through inhalation, but this basically cannot occur naturally (though there are regulations regarding using pressure washers in slaughterhouses for this very reason).
@@jamesdinius7769 Yeah yeah, went mainly on vCJD because that's the one emulated in the scenario, and naturally making prions in game 100% lethal would bring balance issues. Prion diseases have long latencies and even if caught early by protein exams such as Western Blot... Uh, it doesn't help your case much, you are just getting more palliatives lol, I guess a realistic prion gameplay would be kind of boring as it's rather slow and silent, and the in-game prion's "prion features" are low infectivity, and evolutions taking longer to present themselves, supposedly they are harder to cure as well if I'm not mistaken, but I have a hard time buying that when some random country just goes and whips out a prion disease cure in like two minutes 🙄 are prions amazing in science? Yes. In-game? They are kinda one of the most boring pathogens to play as for me at least lol
Try doing a custom scenario of Cholera, there are quite a few and it is often the "forgotten" plague because it usually happens in poor nations and does not usually spread out from them (like the outbreak in 2010 in Haiti)

I think why Plague.Inc is less realistic is because once someone gets infected, they will be infected with it forever until some cure comes round or they die, as well as more.
I’d like a game where rather than win or loss, the game will rate you out of 10. Yeah where wiping humanity is a challenge even on minimal difficulty. And the score scales on how much damage you do

Ah, I can't seem to get this right! Imma keep trying because this seems like a very solid strategy and you sound like you know what you're doing.
Mainly my problem is not getting to kill off the world before the cure is finished, or them working on it too early or quickly. Or I'm not spreading quickly enough in Greenland and in two recent playthroughs in other countries that aren't islands.

This disease has two variants: Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in bovine (especially cattle) and vCJD (Variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease) in human (also known, to differ form former, as human mad cow disease).
