      thats why part 3 was so iconic during the serialization of part 2 jojo struggled with popularity and so everybody in the industry told araki that he should make a tournament or his series will flop but he said "nah" and instead made part 3 epsiodic so that people who didnt read previous parts could just hop in without the worry of getting confused araki was a damn visionary, people be complaining about stardsust crusaders being epsiodic but that episodic nature is what saved the series alltogether and I think thats damn awesome

    my favorite trope is when a character is seemingly about to get beat but suddenly reveals their 700iq big brain strategy. often times it can feel like an asspull but when it works it's so satisfying.

      @mrgar4446 Год назад +9

      I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but as a trope I love it. When you have a smart character fighting a losing battle, half the fun is seeing how they're gonna pull it off against all odds. It's only an asspull when there's zero foreshadowing and doesn't feel believable.

    Senku from Dr. Stone has one of the most interesting takes on the "dead parent" trope. His dad basically set him up for success throughout the entire story. Senku has no trauma from this, but rather immense respect and admiration for his dad. Even before the world was petrified, he had the same feelings due to how hard his dad worked to become an astronaut. Even though he's dead during the main story, it's great to see an MC with a fantastic relationship with their parent.

    Battle Spectators aren't an anime trope, they're a manga trope awkwardly inserted into animes.
    Because in manga they make sense. You can't animate a whole action easily with the little space you have. So you need a character who explains the nitty-gritty of the action (or whatever could be missed, as in the case of JoJo, where battles are often about tactics).
    But that obviously doesn't translate into anime, because it's an animated medium.
    But they still fucking keep it because ???????
    To be fair, the 2007 Phantom Blood JoJo movie got rid of Speedwagon, who was basically ONLY a battle spectator (like, he was NOTHING else, even his first fight with Jonathan was battle spectating, only he also got his ass kicked during it) and that movie fucking BOMBED. So hard I didn't expect there to ever be another animated adaptation of JoJo.

    • @thehomiedamian
      @thehomiedamian  3 года назад +125

      That's true too. Even still, a lot of shows manage to make it translate well enough to anime to the point where I'd say it's become a trope of its own in the medium.

In Black Clover these rankings are also a reflection of societal standing and how you are perceived by your peers which gives the MC an added obstacle to overcome. In MHA its like a popularity gauge, like in music or even combat sports ,also giving the heroes in training something to aspire to. And honestly I just think the Hashira are cool as fuck lol.

You hit the nail on the head when you said tropes exist for a reason and what really matters is execution, every genre has tropes and the best writers know when to subvert those tropes and when to lean into them as story telling devices. I think the power of friendship is one you should lean into for sure.

    I like how the Organization with Power Ranking in JoJo slowly got removed over time ever since Stands got introduced since most Stands can throw hands at each other and win only needing to be clever thus not requiring that trope, like in Part 1-2 got the zombies,vampires,santana and the 3 pillarmen, then random stand users and vampire stand users on part 3 then eventually a town serial killer who got a plant and a dad as an ally, who's weaker than most of the cast but happened to be clever with the way he uses his Stand which is why he can keep up with the more stronger Stands

The best examples I can think of would be the Admirals and Yonkos from One Piece.

    Hey Damian, have you considered at any point writing your own story? It's quite apparent to me you've got keen takes on the medium as seen in this and your other videos.
    I find the OP Mentor trope can be utilized in another aspect too -- in that he is another goal for the protagonist to overcome, aside from the antagonist. Feels quite rewarding; if done right; to see the student to become the master.
    And on another note: Did you finish reading Attack on Titan? If so, what were your thoughts? Mine are full of disappointment.

    Honestly, you really changed my mind on 2 things: the op sensei and the ranking system. Especially the ranking system. On paper, it makes sense why it would be a good idea: you can't really have too many asspulls if you have everyone ranked: the higher powered dude will probably win, but you don't really know for 100% sure. But now that I think about it, I can't really stand it in practice, and my favorite battle anime (jojo) has a pretty limited power system; no one really powers up (bar koichi or whatever), and so they use finesse and creativity to win fights instead of having them be predetermined.

    Tournament arcs are really one of the best tropes if not the best one in anime. It always hypes you up no matter what.
    One of my favourite tournament arcs is actually the autumn selection from Food wars s2, since
    (Food wars spoilers if you care about that)
    Yukihira actually loses in the end. I also feel like the OST and everything else was executed really well and even if the series fell off afterwards, this will be an arc that I will always think of as an great way to execute the tournament arc.

    I think Power of Friendship is, as you said, fully dependent on the quality of the writing. There is nothing wrong with drawing conviction from those close to you and the bonds you have with others, it’s a simple but versatile theme and has a lot of potential for emotive and hype moments in a story. But I find it works best when coupled with a sacrifice or an interesting strategy rather than just a basic burst in power. Fairy Tail is arguably the worst offender for this, with the majority of the series’ major conflicts being resolved by the main cast inexplicably rising in strength or tenacity following a reaffirmation of their love for their friends. It feels cheap, becomes bland incredibly quickly, and in my eyes is a mark of lazy writing that quickly burns out the emotional potential of the trope.
    A good battle shounen can rework this trope to be much more engaging. I’m not the biggest My Hero fan, but (although I can only comment from seasons 1-4) I found it’s use of the friendship/“nakama” idea to be very compelling. Many of Deku’s biggest moments come at the cost of him injuring himself and going through immense amounts of pain, e.g the Muscular fight, which means when he does win it truly feels earned. Another brilliant example I can think of comes from JoJo part one; both after Dio first becomes a vampire and kills George, as well as on the boat with Erina, Jonathan draws from his love for other people to find a genuinely clever way of outsmarting his opponent (piercing Dio on the statue and using the Chinese zombie dude’s corpse to blow up the ship). He also makes a major sacrifice both times, nearly burning alive and dying in the Joestar mansion, and actually dying after using the last of his Hamon on the boat. My favourite example comes from Part 5 but I don’t wish to spoil it so I’ll leave it at that.

      @cobrak1ngs Год назад

      I love fairy tail but it is completely ridiculous with the friendship thing. I realized this when natsu was getting completely pulverized by cobra. He hadn't even hit him yet. But all of a sudden he had a flashback to his childhood and screamed really loudly which paralyzed cobra. The troop is fine when it actually makes sense but it's unbearably sometimes.

    i think dumb protagonist works in characters like luffy, where it is consistent but also gives them a realism. some of luffys actions are absolutely idiodic, but they've made for some of the most iconic moments in one piece. and his his simple world view and beliefs are sometimes beautiful, ex: the way he handles the duel with usopp in water 7. and luffys talk no jutsu is often so perfect for his character, and often isn't to change view but to crush or boost dreams

    Speaking of JoJo, I think there was a missed opportunity when talking about how they handle exposition. There's nothing wrong with what was said about Speedwagon, but I wished you would've touched upon the inner monologues we see when characters first encounter stands. How, in these scenarios, the viewer is just as lost as the character and we slowly get clues and exposition on the enemies STANDO POWA as we see the ability in use
    Great video btw, 10/10

    Anytime there's nudity (atleast I think), it's never meant to be sexual for the audience to enjoy in that way.
    I dont want to give spoilers, but in Part 8 there's a fully nude woman, and it fits into the story well for that arc, doesn't hinder anything storywise, and it's overall a reference to The Shining

Naruto does this a few times, like vs neji when the jonin are like "yoo he can control that fox now no way?" or when he does the 2k barrage against gaara and sasuke literally does not believe it is really even naruto. My hero did this a lot in the first two seasons as well. lots of other anime do this but those are the most mainstream examples i can think of
