Hi Ben thanks for making this video! I wanted to know if you knew how to make a look a like campaign without a "purchase" section, I don't have that on my site and want to make a lookalike audience list using a pixel I have on FB and basically make a look a like based on that pixel, is that possible?
Hi Katie, thanks a lot. Yeah sure, instead of creating a purchase custom audience, you can create a website visitors custom audience and use that as a source audience to create your lookalike. This video should help with the custom audience element: ruclips.net/video/2PZIK8Sm8AI/видео.html
Hello Ben , does the website traffic work for an old Websites with new pixel. Here is what I mean, my website is more than a year but I just installed pixel last month, so using lookalike form web traffic work fine?
Hi Ben. I'm in your FB Group but not getting your notifications. question: can I create a look alike audience from a boosted post? My relevance score is always an 8 or 9. I want to run test ads to this audience to see if I can get them to opt-in to my freebie. (list building).
Hi, yes you can. You can create a custom audience of people that have interacted with that post and use that as a source audience to create a lookalike audience. If you're in the group but not seeing the posts then I would recommend you go ahead and like a few of them and leave a comment or two. Facebook will work out that you want to see that stuff :)
Hi Ben, this may be a daft question but here goes...if I reuse a Lookalike Audience in a subsequent campaign, will it send to that same list of recipients or will it start afresh based on the original criteria?
Hi Chris, if you use the same lookalike audience in different campaigns or ad sets, the audience will contain the same people. If a lot of time passes between using it once and using it again then its likely to change as people's interests, demographics, etc. change.
Great video. Only I find it's misleading that in the title it says 2021 and yet all the dates in your footage are from 2018 and the video is uploaded 2 years ago...
Question: can one just use email lists and add them on Facebook? Doesn’t that interfere with privacy or something? I really like the idea, I just don’t want to do something wrong and put my company on the wrong spotlight...
hello ben i'm in the affiliate marketing space , i have a US custom email list in the weight loss niche but i am going to promote a french product in france but in the same niche( weighloss ) , i asked myself if i can use those US email list to create an LAL in france to find similar client but who's speaking french ..... can i do that ?????? if yes what is the best way to do it . thank you
Hi, yes you can and that's what I would recommend starting with. Once you generate more conversions in France you may be better off switching to a lookalike audience based off a French email list.
Thank you Ben I really appreciate your response, but when I make the LAL in the audience area do I need to put my customer email list location or my targeting location because all my email list are from us and cad and the country I need to target is France ???
Hey Ben, I market in B2B and most of the email addresses on my list are business email addresses (not the same emails they use for Facebook). Is there any way around this (short of creating an audience with website traffic or video views)? I tested this by marketing to this custom audience and my reach was dismal.
There isn't I'm afraid and you are right that your match rate will be lower. That doesn't mean you can't use that list to create LALs from though provided your list is big enough. Otherwise you could focus on other types of LALs as you mentioned.
I just recently installed my pixel a few days ago. Can I create a custom audience of website visitors in the last 2 months? Would the pixel obtains data from past visitors as well or only starting from when it is installed?
awesome video. question: I did a 1% lookalike audience for a client that was having a giveaway contest. when we follow up most of them told us that they don't have babies or their kids are adults. how was my targeting off? I did the lookalike based on the email list provided
Hi Jocelin, if the lookalike audience wasn't accurate that's probably because of the source audience. Did that contain people that are not your target customer? How many people are included - lookalikes are more accurate with source audiences that are larger.
@@JocelinCarvajal if that's the case, that's very strange. If it's time sensitive (as in during their life) the people in the source audience could be older and therefore the corresponding lookalike could contain people that are older. You may also want to run the campaign for longer because Facebook will have only put ads in front of a small portion of that lookalike audience.
@@BenHeath the ad run for two weeks. We got a lot of people who signed up but when we follow up with them with the prize they say "no kids, kids are adults, " etc I was wondering if I did something wrong
Hey Heath excellent vid my bro. I am somehow caught in a little dillema as I'm unsure as to why my look alike audience is always so large when targetting the whole United States. Percentile increments increase in 2.1 Mil / %. How can I decrease this size to zero in further on my audience.
Hi Hakeem, lookalike audiences in the US are always around 2.1 mil. That's because the US has roughly 210 million Facebook uses. That's how lookalike audiences work - they include the top x% of a location's Facebook users. Why would you want your audience to contain zero people? 2.1 mil is a perfectly good size audience to target.
@@BenHeath Thank you Heath your a legend. On a side note of these percentiles they are guessed by algorithim to be the ones that will have a higher chance of clicking with your ad ? Hehe had difficulty finding the right word
Hi master ben! Good day! I just wan to ask , i run a car dealership fb page and created custom audience/lookalike audience based on the data from closed sales, can i use the custom/lookalike that was gathered from closed sales automative in real estate? Thank you so much. ! Stay safe 💪
Lookalikes, particular based off previous customers usually outperform interest targeting options. That because they contain people that are more likely to convert.
That sounds like you don't have things set up correctly. Do you have other targeting criteria selected? With lookalikes you should leave everything else open.
fastlearner thanks a lot. Im afraid it’s not possible to create a custom audience from people that like another page. You can do it for your own page but not someone else’s
That's strange - you might need to accept Facebook terms and conditions around custom audiences first. Or has your ad account been disabled previously?
I have a question, i have only 2 sales so far but facebook is suggesting that i create an audience off of those customers. Wouldn't that limit me since i only had 2 so far? Ive had 250 page views and i can create an audience off those but i feel it would be severely limited too.
Hey Ben! In one of you past videos you say that we need to go for conversion campaign even when we test. However, now you say that based on traffic we could still create a good look alike audience. Is not it a good idea to go for traffic initially and so that we create look-alike audience for much more data
Hi Simeon, those two things are not contradictory. If you want conversions, you should run a conversion campaign with almost no exceptions. You can also create a lookalike audience based off website traffic and that perform very well. Website traffic can come from many sources (not just a traffic a campaign on Facebook). A conversions campaign will still send people to your website that can form a source audience for a high quality lookalike.
@@adamng7245 because then you're campaign won't be optimized for conversions and that makes a big difference to how Facebook's delivers your ads - not just who they target.
Thank you. By the way, has anyone used an already "hashed" email list as an upload? I understand facebook hashes emails during the upload process, but what about lists which are already hashed? Facebook appears to be looking for an email field format with letters and @ symbol, vs number codes for hashed emails. thx.
I don't think you would have a lot of luck as Facebook probably won't be able to match the identifiers. You can always give it a go and see if it works :)
@@BenHeath Thx. It's getting facebook to accept the file data, which is the issue. I have been given a few seed lists from different companies to create audiences and they have been hashed. I'm missing something, but thanks for the reply:-)
@@BenHeath Actually, I just researched a bit more and see that youtube (as opposed to facebook) has 2 options when uploading email customer files: hashed, and unhashed. I didn't see in facebook, but so far this is my finding-in case anyone else encounters. Again, thx for the vid and reply, Ben.
Hi, Ben I have a problem. I created lookalike audiences but it says " the size is not available yet". Can I use this lookalike audience right away or I have to wait until it populating. Thanks.
Facebook will probably let you run ads to that audience right away but I would give it a bit of time to let it populate. It should only take 30 mins or so.
Hey Ben. Please help me with this. How can i narrow down lookalike audience based on an entire country to specific locations? If i will choose lookalike audience based on an entire country, can i narrow it down by targeting specific location from the choose location option?
Hi, you'll have to check Facebook's terms and conditions around custom audiences. That's not something I would do and if those subscribers are in the EU then you'll be in breach of GDPR. In my opinion it's better to build your own list.
Hi James, in this case just the lookalike. Custom audiences (particularly when they are your previous customers) are very different to lookalike audiences and need to be treated differently.
Hey Ben, thank you for sharing your experience :) Can you please help me understand what's the difference between an audience size 1% and an audience size 1 to 2%.
Hi Irene, yeah sure. Those two audiences would be the same size. A 1% lookalike contains the 1% of Facebook users that are most like your source audience. A 1-2% contains the next 1% of Facebook users that are most like your source audience. You can also create a 2% lookalike audience that would contain both of those two lookalike audiences you've mentioned.
Ben Heath thank you! But what’s the different with the ‘first 1%’ and the ‘next 1%’ it’s just a way to have 2 difference pool of people, but the similarity to the source is the same in both of them, right?
@@irenedussin6204No the similarity to the source audience is not the same. The first 1% contains people that are the most similar to the source audience. The next 1% will contain people that are still very similar to the source audience but not quite as similar. If you have 100 people in a room - 1 of those people will be most similar to you (That's your 1% lookalike). Then another person will be 2nd most similar person to you (That's your 1-2% lookalike). then someone else will be the 3rd most similar to you (2-3% lookalike) etc. etc.
I am having problems getting my lookalike audience to show up once i have created them to put into an ad. I can see the custom audience from which I created the lookalike, but not the lookalike. I have repeated the steps many times and still nothing. Can you help me to figure out what is going on?
It sounds like there might just be a bug in your ad account. These usually resolve themselves quite quickly. But if not, you will need to contact Facebook about that.
@@BenHeath Actually I figured it out last night. I have to run ads under "special category" as I am a Realtor. Once I removed that just to see if that was the issue, my lookalike audience appeared for an ad! problem is if I make the ad, FB will reject it in review because of not being labeled as a special category! Which is utterly ridiculous because I am not discriminating against anyone as I was compiling my lookalike from visitors to our business website. I dont know what color, age, sexual orientation and other protected things they are. So how is FB even justifying this. I sent them a message on FB, but who know when they will respond! So as Realtors we cannot do lookalike audiences. Perhaps you could look into that and expound on it.
Uploaded 2018 but tutorial for "2021" ? 2021 Lookalike has changed.. for new ad account can no longer set the location of LAL when you set up lookalike..
I tried this in ads manager but it prompted me to switch to business manager which I am extremely hesitant. Any idea why I can't "create a custom audience" using "customer file" in ads manager?
It sounds like you already have a business manager account? If that's the case there is no difference between operating your ad account through business manager and through your personal ad account.
Why would i create a custom audience and than create a lookalike from it? why don't i directly create lookalike -> source -> event->location? whats the difference?
You need a source audience to create a lookalike audience from. Custom audiences such as previous customers are by far the best type of source audience for lookalikes.
Hi Shivam, if you don't have any warm audiences to create a lookalike audience from then you'll have to wait I'm afraid. It won't take very long for you to generate enough website visitors if you're running Facebook ads. Once you have more than 100 website visitors you can create a lookalike from it.
@@ShivamYadav-be2yj as long as you have more than 100 people visit your website, you can create a lookalike audience from those people. You can get more specific and create lookalikes from people that opt in or purchase instead.
Audiences will be an option in that menu somewhere. Facebook may be testing a new interface in your account right now and it might have moved, but it will be somewhere.
Hi Mich, if you're audience isn't engaging with your ad creative. That's most likely because your ad creative isn't engaging and interesting enough. Also, are comments what you really want?
This is a detailed tutorial for 2020, but the video was uploaded in 2018. This is very outdated and a lot of things have changed in 2 years. I can't even find asset library....
Hi Liviu, the process is exactly the same as it was then. The interface has changed a bit but all the options are still there. You can still go through all the steps demonstrated and create lookalike audiences as I did here.

You need to generate traffic whilst the Pixel is installed for those people to be counted.
We updated the title, because what I demonstrate in the video still works in 2021. That's still how you create lookalikes :)
Very good video mate! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Josh, will do
Question: can one just use email lists and add them on Facebook?
Hi, the Pixel needs to be installed for it to add visitors to a custom audience. So no, it won't be able to obtain data from past visitors
awesome video. question: I did a 1% lookalike audience for a client that was having a giveaway contest. when we follow up most of them told us that they don't have babies or their kids are adults. how was my targeting off? I did the lookalike based on the email list provided
Hi Jocelin, if the lookalike audience wasn't accurate that's probably because of the source audience. Did that contain people that are not your target customer? How many people are included - lookalikes are more accurate with source audiences that are larger.
@@BenHeath I asked my client to give me an email list of customers who purchased from him and he did. the list was about 1k in size.
@@JocelinCarvajal no it doesn't sound like it - you might just need more time.
! Stay safe 💪
Hi Aris, those audiences wouldn't be very effective in another niche so I wouldn't.
Good day to you too!
@@BenHeath thank you so much. 🙏
thanks this video save me on Lookalike Audience Setting.
but 1 question to ask..why if i running using Interest is more perform then Lookalike Audience?
You are very welcome :)
Lookalikes, particular based off previous customers usually outperform interest targeting options. That because they contain people that are more likely to convert.
@@BenHeath ooo i see..thanks for the answer 😉😉😉
@@Yasinamron you are very welcome :)
Hi Ben please help me. My looksalikes aren’t working as the deliver says no ads? Are we meant to include out creatives ?
That sounds like you don't have things set up correctly. Do you have other targeting criteria selected? With lookalikes you should leave everything else open.
hi Ben - superb video. can you please advise - how can I create a custom audience from page likes of someone else's page ty!
fastlearner thanks a lot. Im afraid it’s not possible to create a custom audience from people that like another page. You can do it for your own page but not someone else’s

@@coachash no worries
i'm not finding any option for customer file. it shows website traffic, app activity etc.
That's strange - you might need to accept Facebook terms and conditions around custom audiences first. Or has your ad account been disabled previously?
Tanx a lot brother for this tutorial
Thanks Ajeesh
Very helpful! Thank You.
Thanks for letting me know Yordan :)
Hi Ben, why when set lookalike audience 5% its be splitted (such 1-2%,2-3%,3-4% & 4-5%)? Its not totally 5%. Thanks Ben. Good video
I don't split my audiences like that - I go with a straight 5%
I have a question, i have only 2 sales so far but facebook is suggesting that i create an audience off of those customers. Wouldn't that limit me since i only had 2 so far? Ive had 250 page views and i can create an audience off those but i feel it would be severely limited too.
Yeah it's way to early at this point.
Thanks Ben, useful info
You're very welcome Sham, glad you enjoyed it
@@BenHeath since the LLA is high quality then why cant we re-target them with reach obj instead of conversion obj
@@jzeeTV Oh that's interesting. I don't believe it's possible in Facebook at this point but I could be wrong.
Hi, Ben I have a problem. I created lookalike audiences but it says " the size is not available yet". Can I use this lookalike audience right away or I have to wait until it populating. Thanks.
Facebook will probably let you run ads to that audience right away but I would give it a bit of time to let it populate. It should only take 30 mins or so.
hi, great tutorial on Lookalike ads.. how about if the 1% is about 40000 audience? should we raise the percentage to 3-4% percentage points? thank you
Thanks a lot Ann. Yes 40,000 is quite small. I'd start with a 5% in your case.
@@BenHeath thank you for your reply .
@@annmma4252 you are very welcome :)
Hey Ben. Please help me with this. How can i narrow down lookalike audience based on an entire country to specific locations? If i will choose lookalike audience based on an entire country, can i narrow it down by targeting specific location from the choose location option?
Hi Mansi, you are 100% right. Create your nation-wide lookalike and then narrow in the location targeting section of your ad set.
Hey thank you for thé video I Want ask you if I can get paid email list and put them in custom audience??
Hi, you'll have to check Facebook's terms and conditions around custom audiences. That's not something I would do and if those subscribers are in the EU then you'll be in breach of GDPR. In my opinion it's better to build your own list.
What about if you're a new business with no previous customers? Is a lookalike audience not possible?
No you'll have to wait until you've built a source audience
Thanks for the video very helpful
John Harvey thanks a lot
Good one bro. keep on keeping on
Thanks a lot.
Is it possible to use another page data who is successful and who sell the same product as us to create our look a like ads?
Unfortunately not, that would be a breach of privacy regulations.
do you add in the custom audience + the LAL audience in to the ad set? or just the LAL?
Hi James, in this case just the lookalike. Custom audiences (particularly when they are your previous customers) are very different to lookalike audiences and need to be treated differently.
Very helpful video
Thanks a lot Alan
hi Ben is LLA cost for CPM always much higher than normal interest targeting
Not always but sometimes - I wouldn't worry about CPM that much. Cost per conversion is much more important.
@@BenHeath couldn't agree more
what Ad will they be shown? How do I create the actual Ad (verbiage)
Hi Barbara, I've created a number of videos around that. Different ones for video ads, copy, etc. so I would recommend you check out my channel.
Then another person will be 2nd most similar person to you (That's your 1-2% lookalike). then someone else will be the 3rd most similar to you (2-3% lookalike) etc. etc.
Ben Heath thank you very much your example makes everything clear! Amazing!

Do we have to pay first before any ads go live 🤔 just we try to make a advert, but Facebook said " its not live please update your payment details"
You don't have to pay before you launch an ad but you do have to add a payment method

@@WCWMidnight ok that's interesting. I agree that a lot of their rules are way over the top but unfortunately there's not a lot we can do about that.
Hello I have a new shop no visitor or so whatever how do I get lookalike audience?

Tony Ferguson yeah that would work. You just need 100 customer in a list of registered by the pixel and you can create a lookalike
@@BenHeath no I have a business page ran through ads manager. Not business manager. Thanks

Why would i create a custom audience and than create a lookalike from it? why don't i directly create lookalike -> source -> event->location? whats the difference?
You need a source audience to create a lookalike audience from. Custom audiences such as previous customers are by far the best type of source audience for lookalikes.

The advice in the video still applies - where that's the case, we update the dates.

Audiences will be an option in that menu somewhere. Facebook may be testing a new interface in your account right now and it might have moved, but it will be somewhere.
