Free Up Disk Space FAST - How to Clear Media Cache Files in premiere pro & after effects

- A tutorial about media cache data and how to delete unused files in Adobe Premiere Pro CC and After Affects CC. This is an easy way to troubleshoot errors and free up some space on your computer's internal hard drive or flash SSD.
What are media cache files?
When you import footage into Adobe Premiere Pro, it processes versions of the video and audio files that it can readily access for faster performance. These are referred to as "media cache" files. These are stored in the Media Cache Files folder. In addition, there is a folder containing a database, which retains links to each of the media cache files. These are referred to as "media cache database" files.
Default Media Cache Location:
Mac: Users - Library - Application Support - Adobe - Common
Windows: Users - (username) - AppData - Roaming - Adobe - Common
How to clean media cache files?
You can do it through the apps themselves like I show you in the video or
manually by navigating to the location of the media cache folders and deleting the files while Premiere Pro is closed. Be sure to empty your trash after.
More hard drive space will become available, as the media cache files can take up significant space. If you have older projects you have completed, it is a good idea to delete these files to save storage space and to keep your computer's hard drive tidier.

How much space did you free up?
This could not have been more perfectly timed! thank you sir!
Thank you SOOOO much for that!! You just made me clear up 60GB of space. Before that, my pc was lagging so hard! Seriously thank you!
56GB
I cleared about 200gb!
16 Gb! :D
You deserve much more attention on this video with how much effort and creativity you put into the transitions.
I hope the views will come in time, I think RUclips has a way of showcasing content that deserves it in the end
You just saved my life, I thought this was set up automatically but the settings must have change with the update, just deleted about 150 GB when I had 2GB remaining, I'm smiling a lot now
Super helpful. I was down to 2 MB free space. This saved me.
I had 35 GB of free space only the night before and using Premiere Pro was the only thing I was doing, so I knew it had to be generated by Premiere Pro.
Luckily, I came across your video only the day before by chance.
BTW: In Windows 10, cache settings are in Edit - Preferences - Cache Media.
Thanks!
That was an awesome way to illustrate how stuff stacks up. I was interested and forgot I was hearing general explanations until the actual meat of the matter came up. Well done, and thank you!
I just did a 2.5 hour episode so I cleared up 10's of gigs! Thanks for reminding me to do this! I need to put it in my calendar
Good to hear Yoni!
Saved me 63GB, on After Effects alone. That deserves a like! Cheers man
among all the tutorials on youtube, yours always help me! perfect easy explanations without unnecessary stuff. great job, thank youuu!

Good vid, nicely edited and useful, thanks!
Appreciate you taking the time to comment Charlie! Great channel btw!
oh man, lately I was playing games and recording with OBS and sometimes edited some cool footage. Was doing everything I know of to save disk space and it seemed I still lost space no matter what. Found this and it cleared over 150 gigs of disk space, THANKS A LOT!
Just freed up about 9GB of storage from both Premiere Pro and After Effects. Thanks for this tutorial 👍
Ayyy that’s awesome!
Like. Didn't even get to the point of actually deleting cache, just really enjoyed the intro. Well done!
YO I LOVE HOW YOU EDITED THIS. SO useful too, thank you Javier!!
Thanks Tommy!
Thanks, man! My Premiere was crashing for hours. And I didn't have nothing more to delete. Now I cleared 40 gb deleting this folder.
I love your videos. always straight to the point!
holy shit I had SO much space taken up by this. Why did I not think to do this before. I cleared 400 gigs. Will be passing this video on.
can you think of anything else that would cause adobe to take so much space? I tried this, yet it still says adobe is taking over 200 GB of space. I'll go to the files, yet it says there's nothing there that I can delete- I can't seem to locate what is taking so much space. Any ideas?
If you are still working on and edit will it delete the clips you are using or will your project still be saved
I was able to clear 184GB of media cache storage just on After Effects, crazy! thanks :)
ok so im only working on 1 project that is 23 minutes at 4k and it has eaten 100s of gigs that i cant locate and they arent in media cache. the media cache only has a gig or 2 in it. there are hundreds that have been taken somewhere else. please help
My “empty disk cache” button is grey? I haven’t emptied it which is weird...
Just discovered your channel. The videos I've watched have been really useful so far. Thanks for the content you create!
Hi, I've tried this but seems that even when changing cache locations from c drive to the d drive (the c drive on my laptop is only 100gb), the storage still goes up. How is this possible?
I am confusing that what should I do ?
Deleting my video previews file or not ? Please respond my question ? If i deleted then its effect the current project that I working on it
The creativity in this tutorial 😭😭😭😭♥️🔥🔥🔥🔥🌹 you a G.O.A.T🐐
Thank you so much!!! This fixed my issue with the spinning beach ball of death I was getting when trying to open a project! Thank you so much for ALL your very informative, clear, and entertaining content, I really appreciate it.
Thanks for this. My disk drive will be thankful as well as my computer of course.
nice man glad to see some original videos. love the jump cuts. cool way to explain visually pre-computer explanation nice job
i subscribed without even watching the video for long!Nice stuff
My video preview files are what's eating up my HD, is there a way to easily delete these through the premiere pro application?
how about in the internal ssd sir? in program files I only have 111GB internal buti have external which is 2TB and I already put a location where my cache and scratches. But still in my internal it almost 90% of my ssd used. when editing videos. It's like my external is useless. what should i do sir ?
most helpful video this year. thanks man
If I delete my video previews file on my pc then is it affect on my current working project?
I accidently allowed 46GB's on my ssd and It took up all the remaining space. I went back and cleared the cache manually and I still don't have my space back wtf.
hii I have a question, I cracked ae and plugins, I’m a Instagram editor sooo. If I clear my cache on ae do I loose projects or files for plugins?
Thanks for the video. Every time I attempt to clean up some media & Disk Cache, I still see the same available amount of space on the right hand corner, which is 76 GB Free. Note, I had it once at 90GB. Do I need to remove items in the PTX folder?
Hi, just need to know and m really stuck in my office because of this premier problem and my boss was yelling on me…what I did was I took my 1 hour Documentry to another computer(Apple M1 ) through HDD and it started generating peak files, and which took 4 hours to complete, and I was like….awwww…so is there anyway through which we can avoid peak file generation again and again..kindly help me on this..I was researching on internet since many days, and i don’t find any information
I'm so thankful for your video! I'm not sure about the amount of space but now I can export!! Thanks Javier!
This free'd up 13GB for me, holy crap, thank you!
Hello Javier, I am working in Windows 10. premier pro 23.2v how to fix Encode requires at least 6.37GB to finish successfully?
I was this close to buying a new laptop! THANK YOU!!!!!! YOU'RE THE BEST
I came from doing music/audio to doing photography. Barely made any videos during those days. But now that I got the R5, I got back into video again and started to notice that massive cache files was a thing.
hiii i just wanted to know what is the recommended amount of space i should get for an external drive?
Thanks man...this video was usefullllllll and got rid of almost 15 GB of
cache files.
I don't find that thing "After Effects" on my ae bc i have and hp. Help i worked 1 week and it doesn't want to render bc of media & cache.
what type of microphone are you using... sounds great
How big ssd is prefered for sctrach disk? 500gb is good enough?
@Javier Your Location for these files that you listed doesn't exist on my PC. What am I missing?
thank you so much!!! for the past 2 years i have only 6 GB available on my disk. omg i feel so relieved
what is the difference between "Media Cache Files" and "Media Cache Database"?
Thank you!!! I often sat and wondered why my Ae was just eating up disks space on my hard drive. Thank you!!!! Subscribed
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS Javier, thank you! I have a technical question though.
For some reason when I go to open Adobe LightroomCC, do some photography work and then close the program to jump back into Adobe Premiere ProCC. Well for some odd reason my Premiere Pro cache file destination keeps changing on me to "Library/Caches/Adobe/Lightroom/Video" I don't want this to happen lol. And yes I have changed my Adobe Lightroom Cache file destination to my dedicated external SSD drive.
My ssd drive is prioritized for collecting Premiere Pro, After Effects, and now even Lightroom cache files. But Premiere's cache destination keeps changing after working in Lightroom. Any reason why this could be???
Its driving me crazy given that I like to be an organized person and know where everything is are going lol. I have tried looking this up myself and unfortunately I couldn't find any solid answer. So thought i'd ask you for help. If you're not able to find an answer either then no sweat. But I had to ask. Anyways keep up the great videos and thank you for everything you do for us Javier!
I haven't run into this before but wish I could help.
@@JavierMercedes No biggy. The best practice I can do for now is always remember to change my cache file destination when working back in Premiere Pro. Thank you for the reply though Javier!
your channel is so helpful for those of us that do not know much. You make it so simple and easy to solve a problem! thank you! New sub!
Thank you for this video! Just cleared my After Effects Media Cache.....239GB of cache files deleted!

dude, thank you so much. You literally saved me buying a new laptop. Previously, I thought all my memory was being taken up by shitty WINDOWS updates, but after discovering your video I realised it was PP. So now I literally deleted 100 GB worth of Cache. Thanks man, Liked & Subbed :)
Do you know how to access the preferences tab in windows, I can’t find it :(
@@resident1793 open any project, then: Edit > Preferences > Media > 'media cache database' and press Clean
HOLY! Your edits are insane! You deserve 1m subs!
oh man; 185GB! still waiting for it to show up in my storage bar. Thank you!
I had over 300 gb of media cache files. I had to go into the file manually, because there is no option to delete it like on this video.
Love an entertaining intro, nice work. Makes me want to make more videos.
Here's one for you, every time I render my 51min video in Premiere Pro 2023 (takes about 16hrs), my timelines turns green (rendered), then I go to export it in Media Encoder, and my video in my timeline will just go back to red (not rendered) -- EVERYTIME. Also, each time it would render, it would mysteriously take up about 120GB of my storage space!! So instead of being able to resume my large project, I end up doing it FOUR times, all to lose about 120GB every time. Deleting ALL media cache files didn't change anything either (maybe a few gigs). I got so frustrated with this, I finally backed up my projects (about 1GB total) and uninstalled my entire Adobe Suite - guess what?? I never got my 500GB storage back!! I also cleaned all my cache. What's going on????
Helpful and nicely done video. Thanks, Javier!
This is pretty great. You are really entertaining as well! Nice video and thank you.
Will any of my footages be deleted if I delete all media cache files?
no
Just what I was looking for, this was really helpful, thanks.
How come my disk cache get filled up so fast everday i have to empty it

Dude, awesome video! Adobe forums usually suck for any kind of help, so there's always people like you who provide quick, to the point solutions. Also love the video editing, the clothes changes were awesome! Very helpful, thank you!
Thank you mate! now i can edit more :D

Ok, what can i say!! i had *10GB* left, suddenly i have *40GBs* huhuhu. *Incredible!*
How do i do this on a pc instead of mac?
TY! Very helpful Javier.
No wonder my HDD keeps running out space whenever I'm making new videos for my channel... Thanks for the tips.
No matter how much I delete, no matter show much storage I buy, when I try to export my first video for RUclips it says disk full, error code 4. Every single time, trying not to get discouraged but I’ve tried everything and watched almost all of these videos for a week straight and nothing is working for me. Someone please help me😂😂😂😂😂
Excellent, thank you very much.
THANK U!!! THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH
Thank you. I was working on an animation off my C drive, a big no. I'll switch to a SSD and do all of this. ❤
wait whats the matter with using the c drive, honestly curios
@@SCOUT_YT Oh the space useage! Also SSD is way faster. Adobe was taking up huge gigabytes of space the other way. The video was really helpful.
@@auroraghost6462 Oh, thanks a bunch I just transferred my youtube stuff to D :)
@@SCOUT_YT You're welcome!
thank u so much, it's so useful
I had to watch this video twice. I was too interested in your editing. lmao.
