Great score on that PTO skidding winch. You'll wonder how you ever lived with out it. A few self releasing snatch blocks, tree straps and a skidding nose cone (portable winch company out of Canada) and you'll have no trouble yarding out the most inaccessible logs from your property.
The fransgård is a brand from 1967 in Denmark and in 1978 they started to work together with professional loggers in Norway to produce loging winches so the winch is developed and produced in Denmark not Germany
A couple points to consider from a Farmi owner… Always keep some tension on the cable when you’re reeling it in. Loose loops will get bound up and it will be difficult to pull out. Also, the ropes have always felt like an accident waiting to happen. Loose ropes around a spinning pto? Be aware of what you’re doing and where those ropes are and avoid the urge to loop it around your hand for a better grip. Great piece of equipment but still a lot of work involved.
It is crazy that I find it so satisfying to just watch someone grease the fittings on an implement! I am definitely not afraid of work, I can sit here and watch you do it all day!
As a retired forester in BC, I love your channel. Latest episode brought back memories of being on Crown Zellerbach's logging crews in the Kitimat Valley in a the early 1970's 😊. I knew that you knew how to log when you set your choker to roll the log. Stay safe.
Good find Jason! Now you can tell your wife that you'll be spending you time in the wood with a wench that you paid good money for! 😉 And that's when the fight started. Looking forward to some good videos of log recoveries that would otherwise be left to rot. Great video thumbs up.
When pulling try and set your tractor more inline with the pull. The winch is strong enough that if the log fetched up you can roll your tractor over. A snatch block and recovery straps can make a good method to redirect the cable if you need to. Also can chain the snatch block to the log and run the cable back to near the tractor to get 2X pulling power if needed.
I had a winch like this, but it was a different make and it worked great. I managed a vineyard during the summer and cut cord wood in the winter. We had a 50hp four wheel drive tractor. You need to be aware of what you are doing. I had a guy working for me and he was skidding the logs out to a landing where we would cut them to length. He parked the tractor at an angle to the jag of logs, got off and tried to winch them in. Instead he rolled the tractor over on it's side. I was lucky he didn't get hurt and he didn't turn the tractor off. I unhitched the logs and hooked the cable to a large tree. With little effort I rolled the tractor back on it's wheels. He learned his lesson and never did that again.
You’re going to find yourself using it for all kinds of fun stuff. I once pulled the dent out of an old f150 with it. I used to use a farmi winch but have that back to the owner a few years ago and got a deal on almost the same winch you’ve got, just way way older. I am having a hard time getting it to pull anything more than small sticks of stove wood. Maybe that there is grease on the clutch. Have fun with that thing. It’s a blast.
Thank you, Bus! Your videos were the first time I had seen such a device. I never thought id be able to justify buying one but at $3,300, I couldn’t justify NOT buying it. Great job on the logging winch. I'm new at it and I'm sitting on 90 acres of forest. I have the cord version and you'll want to get the remote control addon if you find yourself walking back and forth to adjust the cable - If it isn't going to pull around a stump property etc.

I know that feeling - found second hand, 56hr working portable petrol capstan winch made in Canada - it will help me a lot, not only to pull logs from forest but to manage logs in front of my sawmill and will keep it above ground tanks to two part log trailer I made :)
Nice score! The winch is a game changer. I run the exact same one but considerably older and heavily used. Avoid excessive lube on the drive chain as it can run down and get onto the friction face of the clutch (its bonded to the driven sprocket and the cable spool has a machined face that acts as a pressure plate). They’re fantastic machines. Enjoy
WOW, what a great find! You're going to love that thing. I have one and it sure is a back saver. I had to shorten the PTO shaft too. Do you know what it is rated to pull? Looks pretty beefy.
It's tweaking that thing hard pulling from the top pulley, prolly should thread it down through the mid pulley before you put a load on it. That will get the load on the center mass of the tractor plus it will increase the pull force like a snatch block. I've got an old school Elkem Formtec 3500 ( Norse) kinda like this one, they're pretty awesome once you get set up with chains. On mine you can't remove the cable from the lower pulley, I found that interesting on your design. Nice winch, did'nt hear what ya paid for it but it will be worth every penny with what you got going on.
Nice find. You never know what you might run across. you should make some kind of vertical stand for it so it more closely matches the height of the tractor attachment parts.
I have to say, the whole time you were hooking up that three point hitch I was waiting for the calamity to start. You know, like when that plank hit you in the head, I was expecting something would happen any minute. That's the kind of stuff that usually happens to me working with a three point hitch. It never goes smooth
It's amazing to me how no one has the books on any equipment. I have the books for every piece of equipment i own.n they go w anything i sell.they also sell a cone to put over the cable then take the cable to the log to keep it from hanging up or digging into the ground.

@@gnillut I have a "Farm-1" log puller. after you have the log up to the top of the machine, You use chains to wrap the log to the chain rail. Then let off the cable tension . This way you save the cable end from extra stress.

If bad traction, I keep all the logs on the wire, so I can dump the load and climb the hill with the tractor, and then pull the logs back up to the tractor.
One should be very careful using pto implements that came off a different brand tractor, if pto shaft is to long when raising up implement.......... When I first got my winch they said to put a little grease on chain, little is right, one day I put a little to much and I couldn't pull a feather. That clutch disk pad is right under chain, the extra grease got onto the pad and disk so I had to take it apart and heat the clutch disk pad and and brake clean disk/plate, not a easy job.........
