Hi, I have had this same winch for 15 years, great tool. I noticed a couple things while watching your video, and thought I would comment. I would try to square the winch up to your pull direction, when you pull sideways like it appears you are, you could flip your tractor over sideways. You seem to have your throttle up a little high, these winches work fine at a idle, too fast and things break. Get yourself a couple sliders , and a couple more chokers, you could drag 3 logs back at a time.
You’re not wrong. I was having to pull sideways to avoid blocking my narrow, one-lane road. I had actually ordered a slider at the same time as the choker but it showed up at the end of the day I filmed. I only ordered one of each so I could try them out but I’m definitely ordering more. That choker worked great. 👍🏻
Nothing better than to watch someone working hard, doing what they love while preserving/utilizing and otherwise wasted resource. That lumber will live on for years and years to come. Well done Jason!
Hey guys, we're going to need a bigger boat 🦈 I mean tractor 🚜 NWS! I know you love your little John Deere, but I bet you thought about getting something just a wee bit bigger. Sure is nice to have that sturdy anchor when your winching logs! -NES
You got some nice cedar there, get it now before it all grows up around it this summer. I used to use pully's and big rope. Lots of good milling you got now!🌲
That area changed so much since the fire. Im surprised your retired neighbors weren’t out “supervising”. Has the forestry (Hancock? I think it was) been busy on that other section? Loved riding up there thru the trees and seeing the old growth stumps. So peaceful.
I don’t do directional very well. 🙄 😅 To the right as you face the old clear cut, leaving your drive way. (My friend was the fence builder) We moved from the area, I miss it greatly and enjoy seeing the land thru your videos. Would love to see a drone of the full impact to your little community. I know logging is a necessary evil, but it leaves the landscaping to be desired and it’s hard to not to be sad about the tree and habitat loss.
I do the walking so you don’t have to!😉 Hardwood is better for decking but in the case of the boards I recently milled, even the hardwood boards break often. It’s much cheaper for them to have me mill several extras out of fir.
We had a wildfire back in 2020, I have some videos on it. The property was then logged but all of these cedars were left standing. After that summer, every slightest breeze would blow down a cedar or three. They’d knock out our power and block or dead end road. The power company finally came out and cut them all down and I bought them from the property owner.
That's some real north west logging it's a little like the way we swamp log in the south you make a lot of trips back and forth the only difference is you are going up and down and we are swimming God Bless Y'all 🙏🙏😂
Doug you got to tell Momma you need a grapple for the front of your tractor. You can do more with a grapple then lift logs. You get 100% control when setting a log on the sawmill lift. No more rolling and crashing logs.
Looks like a lot of nice lumber in the rough there, Jason. It was nice the way you untossed that chain (6:11). Also. at 11:52 I was trying to kill that bug on my screen but it was yours, not mine. Bill
Been looking forward to this video. You have a nice winch . Looking forward to watching you learn best ways to rig chokers & snatch blocks to get your logs downhill where you can load them.I used to help a firewood cutter that had permission to cut on WEYCO cut over units after they had been harvested & before they were replanted. He was a magican w/chokers & long line, he could put more english on a log than you could shake a stick at. Do you have a break away snatch block, would be handy for you. I see you learning the value of putting spin on a log when you want to move it. Good watch
Man, those logs made you work for them! You mentioned the 'bigger part of the work' is in positioning the cameras,. .I was thinking of this about 5 minutes into the watching. All I can humbly say is, Thank you for bringing us this interesting viewing Jason.
Thank you, Reg! I was using 2 GoPros, my drone and my iPhone on this one. It makes editing a challenge as well when you’re trying to line up the audio. Especially because the drone doesn’t record audio. Everything you hear during the aerial shots was from the GoPros.
Just a couple of observations of a job well done... Youre actually lucky this was a 'hill-site'. You could take advantage of gravity to help you. For heavy logging, your tractor was kind of a light weight base. Makes for a bit of extra work and a lot of mental consideration. I think using a pulley and external anchor might make for a bit less exertion (maybe a bit more easy foolin' around with placement)(Can't beat mechanical advantage ! ). Fantastic job ! Keep on loggerin' !
Thank you, Gary! It definitely would’ve helped if I could line up with the pull but I didn’t want to block my narrow road. I could see needing to run back down the hill to move for someone.
Jason, what a workout, I lost track of how many times you ran up that steep incline, but looks like the reward in beautiful logs will be wirth it. Be careful my friend, John. Don't ya just love that skidder?! Now if you just had a log truck.
Man, you truly had me on the edge of my seat while you were skidding down hill. Scary but job well done. I always look forward to your videos and what you have going on. Stay safe
Some of those logs on the hill were straight as arrows and quite a good sized diameter. How long until you tackle the downed trees from the storm on your property?
I was looking at the storm trees on my property yesterday. For the most part the ground is still too went to be able to effectively get much done on them. It’ll probably be later in the spring before I can get to them.
Is that road as quiet as it appears to be in the video? Glad there was not any traffic. Wow the next guy that says pulling logs down hill should be easy really doesn't understand the situation. Great video Jason, lot of work! Thumbs up.
Thank you, Craig! Your perception is correct. There’s only 9 houses on my street and most of my neighbors are retired or work from home. I did almost run into 8 deer the other morning. 😂
great video I at one time used cut logs even with the right tools logging is still hard work and I agree what cbenoit1056 said the way you are pulling the logs you could turn your tractor over
I would’ve rather lined up with the pull but I would’ve had to block my dead end road. If I had a choker-setter I could stay with the machine and move as needed.
I'm curious if you went back to the site with a limb mulched to clean up the cut limbs or if you leave them there for possible future wildfire fuel? My uncle Randy was a logger. He used to say, and I'm paraphrasing, 'if I cut a limb I'm responsible for it, if mom-nature falls it she's responsible for it.'
After the fire in 2020, there was a lot of irresponsible logging out here. This site was no different. I bought these logs the way you see them. Down and for the most part, limbed. There’s no way I’d be able to do any cleanup of that land other than by hand. The logging company should’ve done better.
Yup that filming is hard work there ...I'm surprised they haven't re planted yet but they probably have another year before losing timber deferral ...cheers
Hello Jason, I'm just going to say it; you had me scared. Figured if I was watching the video, you made it out alive. You really need a spotter with you. You know, someone to call 911. Maybe it's just because I know all the close calls that I've had working alone and remembering when one of those close calls resulted in a ride in a helicopter. I'd like to suggest a few more cable chokers and, if you think that you are going to go more of this, a set of "corks". Like to see you stay around for awhile.
@@NorthwestSawyer they make a (smart) snatch block block, it will release when the load you are pulling hits it. This allows you to possibly just keep pulling after load changes direction. Not cheap
You scored with that winch. That is going to pay for itself many times over from the looks of it. I’m tired just watching you scamper up and down that slope.

Might consider getting a breakaway block to
the aerial view of your attack methods really gave a great perspective!
Thank you! It helps me see things I don’t so I can make better plans next time.
That skidder attachment is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing better than to watch someone working hard, doing what they love while preserving/utilizing and otherwise wasted resource. That lumber will live on for years and years to come. Well done Jason!
Thank you! I milled one of these logs yesterday (stay tuned) and the lumber was magnificent.
Well done from Scotland
Love the videos.Watching from eastern Canada.
Thank you!
Great job! Lots of cedar for sure. Love the winch. Other than uphill hiking, they take a lot of grunt work out! Stay safe, and God bless
Thank you!
Thank you very much for this video. I hope to be doing this soon. I'm glad you include the challenges when there are difficulties. You are a teacher!
Thank you, James! If you’re watching a logging video with no difficulties, it’s been highly edited. 😉
Hey guys, we're going to need a bigger boat 🦈
I mean tractor 🚜
NWS! I know you love your little John Deere, but I bet you thought about getting something just a wee bit bigger. Sure is nice to have that sturdy anchor when your winching logs!

I would probably overwork the biggest tractor available. 😂
Good looking logs.
Thank you!
I'm worn out just watching you!! It does look like alot of fun though. Wish I had the back to be able to do all that.
Choking and decking logs is hard work!
I remember doing that with our property..I was in my 20s. I am impressed my friend nice hard days work!
Thank you!
All those lovely logs and so much easier with that winch, brilliant bit of kit.
Those are some real beauties for sure and I don’t know how I’d do it without the winch.
@NorthwestSawyer it was meant to be, trees then winch, really makes your day, good for you.
Jason, are your legs still burning!? Sheesh! Good shots with the cameras and drone. Definitely a beer break and a hot tub dip after THAT day!
Great filming of the video. Glad to still see the "signature" reverse moves. Truly a work out on that hill! Must have felt that afterwards!
Thank you, Jeff. I certainly did sleep well that night. I milled up one of those logs yesterday. Stay tuned!😉
It is a good work out .
Wow I didn’t realise how big those cedar logs were until I saw the drone footage they are massive Jason!….great job 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you! There’s some really nice wood there.
A sawmill operation looks like a lot of work! Especially for being retired!
It sure is but it pays pretty well 😉
You really earned your money on this video. 👍🏻
Good looking stuff. Is it time to find or build one of those mini log trailers with a grapple ?
I’m thinking about a way to skid them into my dump trailer 😉
You got some nice cedar there, get it now before it all grows up around it this summer. I used to use pully's and big rope. Lots of good milling you got now!🌲
I have a big rope too but it scared me to use it😉
The new winch rocks!
It does!
That area changed so much since the fire. Im surprised your retired neighbors weren’t out “supervising”. Has the forestry (Hancock? I think it was) been busy on that other section? Loved riding up there thru the trees and seeing the old growth stumps. So peaceful.
Oh I had several “supervisors” stop by😂
I’m not sure what the other section you’re referring to is?
I don’t do directional very well. 🙄 😅 To the right as you face the old clear cut, leaving your drive way. Takes a bit of time for the scale of those logs to sink in. Huge undertaking.
I couldn't walk that hill once let alone all the times you climbed it.nice looking stuff.can soft wood work for trailer decking or just hardwood?
I do the walking so you don’t have to!😉
Hardwood is better for decking but in the case of the boards I recently milled, even the hardwood boards break often. It’s much cheaper for them to have me mill several extras out of fir.
Just some nice logs you got there. Where they cut for land development or a fire came through

Doug you got to tell Momma you need a grapple for the front of your tractor. You can do more with a grapple then lift logs. You get 100% control when setting a log on the sawmill lift. No more rolling and crashing logs.
I have a grapple but these logs are too heavy to grab with it. I’m already pushing the tractor’s limits with just my forks.
Money trees for sure! I used to cut cedar stumps, the rippled part of the buttress has beautiful figure for bowls or jewelry boxes.
Good to know! I’ll go after them next
We love what you do for us who can’t do what you do buddy. Thank you always good sir!! Stay safe kid😅.
I appreciate that, Mike!

Thank you! I definitely need more accessories for it.
How are the seedlings coming after the fire? Getting any that look like serious contenders?
They’re coming up but hopefully they’re going to outgrow the weeds in time.
This kinda looks like Jenga in opposite land, figuring out how to topple pieces in some sort of order. Stay safe out there!
It’s more like pick up sticks😂

Thank you!
Those logs were well worth the work to get them home.
I agree! Some of them are high grade lumber! I’ll be milling some of it soon.
Jason noticed a nice feature on that winch would be a remote control, so you could operate from uphill of the logs.
You’re right. I’ve seen the remote unit but it costs almost as much as the winch did, unfortunately.
Dang. Jason! All of those trips up and down that hill. I'm feeling the burn all of the way down here in Texas. Well done, brother. 👍
Thank you, Bob! It’s my fitness program 😂
Man, you truly had me on the edge of my seat while you were skidding down hill. Scary but job well done. I always look forward to your videos and what you have going on. Stay safe

Whoever invents a camera that can accurately depict slopes and angles is going to be rich. Nice cedar.
I agree! Somehow the camera adds ten pounds to a person but removes 20 degrees of slope😂

Great video....................too short. Those logs look kinda small..............until you stand next to them.
Thank you! I’ll definitely bring yo along when I get the rest. It’s funny how the camera makes me fat and the logs skinny!😂😂😂
Yeah, I know. The camera makes me look 73.
Very impressive work completed! Both the logging and the filming. Thank you for taking the extra time to show us how to do it!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I did bring one with me but never used it. Lucky I only bound up once.

Filming and editing.
Wow, you earned every inch of that wood. You were very clever in the way you moved those enormous logs. Thanks for filming it for us to watch. 😊
Thank you very much!
You probably know it but a snatch block or two would really make a difference going from one stump to another redirecting your pull

Closed captioning please
Why use the forks instead of the grapple? You can pass on the gym. i think you got your workout for the week!
My grapple is so heavy that I’d probably damage my loader with these logs. I’m already pushing the limits with just my forks.
All that and some people believe you're ripping them off when you quote a price on your work.
