    Procrastination is often a strategy of self-sabotage. You have to go deeper in yourself to find the causes of this way of dealing with things. This kind of strategies has a meaning about the way you think of yourself. But it's so hard though. I've been so used to self-sabotage myself, because I'm so used to think that I don't deserve success, or love, that it feels like it's a part of me. And I can't get rid of it. It's almost comforting, since it's the way I always "loved" myself.
    But getting rid of those habits asks a real work on a very long relationship you have had with yourself. You clearly need a therapist for that.

    • @talyahr3302
      @talyahr3302 4 года назад +15

      This the real shit right here^!
      I dont think you "need" a therapist to solve this (and I say that as someone going to school to be a therapist) but can definitely be very helpful. Spending more honest time with yourself and actually intentionally spending time to think about how you may be self sabotaging yourself is a great start.

    • @antoniomartin3955
      @antoniomartin3955 3 года назад +17

      This. If you don’t see yourself as worthy of success or the love of people around you, you will adopt behaviors that actively ruin you, with a “why even try” mindset. Yet the decision to try is already 90% of the hardship

      Procrastination works because it is a very efficient solution.
      Why would you brain work a week if all the work can be done in one evening?
      This is because of evolution. Such a waste of energy would be fatal for the organsim in earlier days.
      The brain is specifically designed to work as efficient as possible.

    Use self-discipline only for the important things in life.
    1. Education - Finish your education.
    2. Food - Make the right food choices.
    3. Exercise - Get your physical activity in at least 4 times a week for at least 20 minutes.
    4. Social life - Be social but with the right people that also have the same goals as you. (1-3)
    5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 - Success.

    It's not always about the action of the person or external factors which definitely have huge influence in self-dicipline department. I got to face the difficulty of being discipline, being on-time, and being accountable for the rest of my life no matter how hard I tried. Then I was diagnosed for having inattentive type of ADHD at the age of 27 years old. After knowing the right treatment suits me the most, I start to acknowledge much better way to deal with my challenges and stop beating myself up for being unable of having me accountable as an adult.

Also, don't fight or try to suppress you urges, simply observe it for what it is(dont act on them), and just as it came in randomly, it will eventually go away,not easy, but SUPER effective.

      work in your environment, find cues that you spot almost if not all day so that you can rewire your brain to follow a routine and get a reward that excites you and that promotes your human needs (like survival, food, sex, etc). Be consistent and over time you'll see how your willpower to stick increases, but also the amount of effort you put into following the routine is way lesser the first time you started. It feels like disciplin is 20% effort and 80% the result of your goals and past choices.
    As soon as you put yourself out of the equation, self dicipline becomes a natrual habit.
    I don't need to have a pleasant feeling while doing what I have to, I don't need comfort, I don't need luxury, I just need to function, I just need to work.
    It's that easy to explain, and once the ball is going, It's literally a no brainer. For me It's having a good job that gets me going. But when I have nothing to strive for, or if I have set the wrong goal then my discipline is horrible.

      addictions such as cocaine ad alcohol are physical addictions. Even if your friend wanted to, he probably couldn't just stop them because his body would no longer be able to function normally for a while if he did. Depending on how HOW dependent he is, he could even die from not taking them anymore.
      Best solution; keep trying to talk him into going to a rehab center (and watch John Oliver's episode on rehab so you don't get screwed over). They're the best way for him to get away from drugs in a healthy manner that won't harm his body and body functions.

    Alternatively, learn to be mindful, and just follow your heart. When you understand that every moment is a miracle and it can only be bad if we let our minds judge it as bad, then you can effortlessly do anything you want, and “delaying gratification” becomes natural and irrelevant.

      TheDrB0B that sounds a little new age propaganda to me, "no negative minds, man!", I prefer a more Jungian approach of confronting the shadow (rather than pretending everything is good).
      Some times you have to face the beast. Also pretending everything is always good does not prepare for when, inevitability something bad will happen.
      Mindfulness should not be about ignoring/suppressing emotions, but letting them pass with out clinging to them and allowing them to take control, if your mother dies you don't not greive because you decide not to make a negative judgement.
      Also my opinion, is " mindfulness" is just the initial phase of meditation, which is much more beneficial. (But if I'm really honest and put my tinfoil hat on, the kind of mindfulness you described is government propaganda, like religion, and the new age movement, half truths hiding oppressive social controls, "be mindful, don't judge" hence you don't judge and see the fact the state/government corruption is rife and we live in a kakistocracy )

      @TheDrB0B 6 лет назад +2

      I'm not sure why you think that my comment implies that mindfulness is about ignoring/suppressing emotions, I don't think it is. Learning that every moment is a miracle means to find value in every emotion/sensation you can experience, see it as something that doesn't hurt you, but rather something you can learn from (confronting the shadow if you will). You're not pretending everything is always good, you're merely realizing that bad things have value too, and you can appreciate them.
      My life long best friend passed away on Monday, I cried for days on end, and still do, but rather than curse the world and let that sadness turn into anger or despair, I relish in it. After all, I hurt because I loved her, and that love is what I'm feeling with every tear. I had never felt something so intense and shocking as this, and for that I thank her as well, I've always had a hard time opening up to my emotions, but this left me no choice. I'm coming out a better person from this grief.
      In my opinion, mindfulness is the very essence of meditation, by not judging your experience in life you see it just the way it is, not tinted by your predispositions or paradigms, you just let the present moment be. I have no idea how this can hide oppressive social controls, if anything it makes them clearer. These controls often (if not always) work from your insecurities, telling you the answer to being happy in life is one way or another (wealth, sex, power, etc), which is the true definition of a religion, a set of rules to live happy. In reality, mindfulness is the essence of non-religion, to not attach yourself to any rules or any paradigms, you live from your heart, you let your inner wisdom dictate your path.
      If you want to have a more complete dialog about this, please message me through Google hangouts, have a good one.

    1:54 I think "will" doesn't fully capture it. I think what happens it's having a desire so strong about something that suplants everything else (having a punishment correlated also helps), a good vision of your life or a proper plan, or all three are what actually is going on. But of course Resilience it's a skill in and of itself, the ability to tough it out and endure pain it's common to all Chess players and fighters and it's what people commonly think when they use the word "Willpower".
    But they ignore that this ability to focus is grounded in lots of training in other skills such as the planning and execution of your job. Think Kojiro while he fought Denshishiro and in Sekigahara, the only reason why he was able to fight beyond his limits was that he didn't have to worry about technique, readings and planning, it was all second nature to him at that point, so he could free his mind to live in the moment and focus on performance.
    I think it's not simply a matter of desire, almost all of us have dream careers, something we love more than anything and maybe already do but that we don't turn into our jobs, simply because we don't have a fucking clue on how to do it!!!
    And conversely having a plan can make diffcult situations or actions not only more bearable but less of a big deal. This is what happened with me and nutrition, i never liked eating so when i was wanting to grow muscle i needed a more strategic approach instead of my usual "eat a lot". And since i had an already established system and habits for how to train and organize my life i've builded my eating plans around that. This made me go from 2 meals to 4-5 meals really quickly. There were a buch of external and internal incentives as well tho. Like not wanting to waste training, time and food, and physical limitation (having to get out to by junk food when you're already tired it's a pain in the ass) and i would say that motivation may be even more important than planning cause the desire to become better were always hammering in my mind but i would say that without a plan to channel that desire and intensify it wouldn't have lasted, it would be just like a bunch of sadly wasted energy.
    I think plans are a form of "energy concentration" or "engine", when working effectively they use your power (motivation and physical energy) to it's max potention and when don't, this energy is wasted and scattered all across the place.

    One of the most dangerous myths: is that you need self-discipline to succeed.
    You don't need self-discipline. What you need is... obsession.

    Seems like a lot of people in the comments haven't watched the video all the way through. In order to develop good discipline, you need a supportive, positive and fulfilling environment. But in our society, we ask people to use discipline to create that environment. The concept of self-discipline is another "pick yourself up by your bootstraps". The strength you want is not discipline, but a good and generous community.

    Thanks ! I'm glad to see this sort of video, because it shows that the external factors in happiness or success are very important, and more than we think.
    In deed, the well-known myth of self-made man is pretty exagerated because the chance and the environment take a crucial role in ascension. I'm tired to see all sorts of personal development's methods, because this philosophy is often made on the fact that our problems come only from ourselves and that we are alone to erase these difficulties, but forgets external causes.
    Yet it's important to become aware of the environment. So I say thank you to you and your video which doesn't forget that.
    I'm sorry for very potential english mistakes, I don't use this tongue very frequently.

    Even though I went to College for some tech experience, there aren't that many jobs out there right now that will hire me, let alone be available for the chance to be hired. What I learned is, I got to be less picky about what job to take, and perhaps even do some volunteer work if I can afford to.

    To add, remember that people don't change when things are comfortable. We discipline ourselves when there's a big challenge ahead of us and if we don't change, we die. Let's say having a health problem due to too much sweets. If you love your life enough, you'd make a 360 turn and change and never look back. We're creatures of habit and the amount of effort to change our habit is harder than getting a habit.

    This is why we must break up with people who are a bad influence (alcoholics, abusive friends, narcissists etc), have separate rooms physically and mentally for recreation and productivity and to give ourselves healthy doses of isolation where no one watches your every move. To give us the environment, to reinforce discipline and encourage long term routines. No one can beat you into it as long as you decide to stay where you are.
    I definitely think because of this, our childhoods do not encourage enough self discipline in modern society.
    Education is done by instruction, not by provocation.
    School hierarchy classes people in a trapped environment, where only elders are superior but not of equal standing that could encourage heart and merit. Its a prison, where you can only reflect but not move forward.
    There are too many influences of avoidance (punishment, pressure from authority and peer resentment) rather than influence of curiosity (praise, freedom of thought and trust).
    Why develop self discipline as a child when there is no environment to seek long term desires.
    Why should we work for random qualifications, we are told to do it when we do not understand the merit in it. Its overwhelmingly painful for young people who do not understand.
    Only when we grow older, can we put our authorities aside and work on our foundations for discipline.
