- In this weeks video I explore some simple magnet hacks in the workshop. Magnets are very useful for shop organization like storing you push stick. I also build a cross cut bench hook and a set of trammels

I use hot glue for the magnets on my drill press for my chuck key and my band saw top cover for the allen key and another magnet I love is a magnetic parts tray that I have on the little outboard bed of my lathe that I put all the lathe tools in. They are always handy, never get lost and have never vibrated off (yet). A rare earth magnet glued to the end of long dowels really make it easy to reach that screw or tool you dropped too.
I love magnets too! I have them on my table saw to hold my common blades and wrenches. And on my bandsaw to hold the Allen keys for adjusting everything. So handy.

I’m a sucker for magnets. I use them all over the place. That also makes me a sucker for any videos that give new ways to use them. Two more to add to the shop.
Add a drill bit hex head onto the wood block above the concrete nail and then you can use the ruler compass with your handheld drill. Maneuver-free circles at the touch of a trigger.
One thing I've found a magnet useful for is holding a razor blade in my tape drawer. I always prefer using the blade because I can grab it with one hand and it's ready to go. I put the magnet toward the bottom of the drawer on the side, so there is no risk of grabbing the blade, and it has that thicker portion at the top that your fingers want to grab on to. Love these tips.

Good video. I screwed a couple to the underside of a shelf then used epoxy to fasten a washer to the back side of the remote controls for my shop vac and shop radio. they now never get lost and are never covered in sawdust. I also hold my rules and squares in their locations with them.

Your video editing is getting better and better. Love the small things you do like have the drill bit bottom out in time with the music at 1:35 and how it continues with the next screws you put in. Awesome video as always! This has become my favorite channel

Putting the magnets into the steel cups which are made for them doubles their holding power. Lee Valley sells both the magnets and the cups.
I have them in my tool cabinet to hold both chisels and planes securely. A single magnet will hold a #6 standing on its tail.

Compass was cool. Like the cross cut saw idea too. I'd like to see what you come up with for the 45 degree cross cut.

Great ideas. I use magnets from old hard drives. If you take them apart there are usually 1-2 great magnets and they are stuck to plates with screw holes in them. Have them all over the shop to hold adjustment and misc tools. Find your local tech guy and tell him you will destroy his old drives for him. Keep up the great videos.

I use these magnets a lot ways but 3 everyone can easily use 1) epoxy magnet to 6 ft FAT MAX tape measure and tack to bench vice 2) epoxy to remote control for dust collector and hodt to whatever tool you'dre using 3) attach to 2-3 ft long dowell as pickup stick for dropped parts. Another little trick for the Chuck key is add a retractable keychain cord to it to drag it back up to the magnets so that you can't possibly set it anywhere else

Great tips for using magnets. I used some to hold my dust boot on my CNC router.

Drill various sized holes (through holes or partial) in the edge of a 2 x 4 for holding common stuff like pencils, chuck keys, drill bits, brushes, etc... Mount magnets on the side and stick it where you need it (drill press, workbench, etc...). I also drop a ball bearing or nut in my super glue bottle so I can stick it wherever I can mount a magnet.

Not necessarily a shop idea, but when we were hanging doors when building our house, we used either 3/4" or 1" rare earth magnets epoxied into the top of all the closet doors, and a steel washer screwed into the header of the door jambs. Then we put a little clear bumper like you'd find on kitchen cabinet doors or drawers on the stop strip and the opening and closing of all the doors is effortless, totally silent, and they stay closed. I'll never go back to bullet/ball catches again. Working great for the past 16 years...

So cool I am going to use a couple of them
neodymium magnet, most powerfull magnet and costly for sure but worthed, i used those on my wooden fishing toys and very strong magnetize.

Been using the same chuck key magnet hack for years, I'm not saying you stole it from me because, well, I don't have YT videos where you would have seen it and umm....hell I'm just glad we have something in common , love your videos :-)
Great vid! how well would they hold if they were hidden under a veneer?
Beware if they chip ('cause they're fragile) - those things will mess machinery up. Lots of great ideas - I have them holing up most of my hand tools in my shop. Great for making "minimal" shelf-style storage for my hand planes - I can grab & go with a snatch.
I've got some rare earth magnets out of some old-school big platter hard drives - and they will do some serious damage to a finger if you have it in between them and let them fly.

I made a garden variety toothbrush and razor holder for the inside of my bathroom mirror that used them to attach it, but I also sliced off a portion, planed it really thin, countersunk 3 of the magnets and then reattached the thin piece. I'm able to hang tweezers, nail clippers and small scissors without having to fool with hooks or brackets. Modest project I know, but it solved an annoyance that had been bugging me.

Where did you buy your magnets and you were using the counter sink drill bit for flat head screws, do you remember what brand and where you might have bought it? mine are small and always seam to jam up with wood chips. Thanks Ryan as always great job on your videos.

There are some hefty ceramic magnets in microwave ovens. I stick them to things like my table saw, drill press, etc. They are handy for holding wrenches, chuck keys, and other odds and ends that go with those tools.

I use rare earth magnets for stage work like securing props to scenery that needs to be removed and replaced. One thing your viewers should know is that these magnets are brittle and if you tighten a screw down too much the magnet will shatter. I find it safer to use a screwdriver rather than a drill. Also, the magnets are very strong and will pinch your digits if your fingers are in the way.

I JUST made something very similar to ur circle jig..I didn't use a rule though But I probably should because then I can measure how big the circle is

Be careful around metal grinding or cutting. Strong magnets will find every particle and can be a pain to clean off. Thanks for posting

I did not know the rare earth magnets with the hole in them were so accessible?! Although they may be less strong. But that may be a good thing in some instances. Now I don’t have to always epoxy them into place.
OK. Great ideas for the magnets. But I've seen a couple of videos where you are using a bit in your drill. I wanted to look for one but I don't know the actual term to do a search. You are using it at 2:05 in this video. What is that called???
They are a counter sink bit with depth stop. I got mine from Lee Valley tools but I've seen them elsewhere:)

They build those magnets into dovetail fixtures for the same reason. Clearly a good idea.
I use one to hold my church key on my tool crib!
One problem with them is that they are not very durable, they really need a bit of protection if you plan to use them like that. Someone on youtube used to epoxy them to things instead of screwing them, the epoxy provided a thin durable layer to cover the magnet as well.

I used rare earth magnets in the fifty to seventy pound pull area to convert the power switches on my 220 volt dust collectors to corded switches. This both allowed me to avoid reaching over the collectors to access their switches and to avoid bending over to access their switches. On a whim, I added a few feet more to the cords so I could mount the switch on near by equipment when I was doing repetitive cuts, sanding and so on.

It's not worth buying, you have to change the batteries in them so often they end up costing a fortune.
I used a couple of them on my fliptop cabinet that my sander and planer or mounted on. I cut notches in the top of both of the side panels for a 1" wide X 3/4" thick oak strip that supports and locks the top in place. The magnets are glued in holes in both ends of the oak strips and I sunk cut off 10p nail heads in the notches. So I don't have any hardware to latch/unlatch, screw, buckle, or what ever. I just pull the oak strips out and flip the top over then stick the strips back in place where they are held by the magnets and good ole gravity. Every machine I have has at least two pencil's with magnets stuck to them. Never have to look for a pencil.

Dont be so picky. Do you know how hard it is to pick the right music? It is damn impossible to please everyone. I have seen a lot of videos with music choices that have been a lot worse!!
I agree, and if you must put in music, perhaps it can be at a much lower volume, takes a great video and makes it almost unwatchable.
Ignore the haters, I love the music. It's part of the content. You can always listen on mute if it bothers you that much, or just watch other channels -- there are so many to choose from
i'm constantly torn about music in video. obviously not everyone has the same taste in music so I will always have people that are not happy. The reason why I have always included music is because I personally enjoy the video more with it. It gives me something to edit to and helps to keep the video pace.

You are free to watch channels that don't use music, or just use the mute button, if it bothers you that much. Seems pretty arbitrary to come to a channel that has been using music for years and complain now though.
