The mid-late-90s was a great time for singer-songwriters, and I remember loving this song in high school.

I first realized how much vocal talent Paula Cole has when she sang "The Look of Love" on the Chris Botti LIVE with orchestra & Special Guests DVD.
If anyone wants to gauge there talent, sing this great Burt Bacharach song.

The radio version of Where Have All The Cowboys Gone cuts off this beautiful operatic singing that she does for the outro. It’s part of what makes the song and it shows off a bit of what she can do. Please check out the album or extended version, ASAP. 😉

This song grew on me when it was out but then it got so overplayed on the radio that I could not stand it anymore. I can appreciate it again now after not hearing it for a while and really like your interpretation of the lyrics. I do remember Paula having at least a few hit songs but then she seemed to fade away from the mainstream.

***PAULA COLE VS. RBS TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...ride 'em, Cowboy...... (2:40)
    - ...I can actually mix my 'Trivia Time' and 'Story Time', with this post; I was in the Music Industry (1994-2005), and sort of crossed paths with Paula....her 1994 debut Album "Harbringer" got her some notice with the 'College' crowd, and she became a critic's darling.....
    - ...but, her 2nd Album got her REAL acclaim!! ...this tune was the 1st single from the "This Fire" Album; the weird title made the tune hard to push at Radio, but thanks to TORI AMOS (at the time) Radio opted to listen......and, here's where RBS comes in....
    - ...I was asked to promote the Dance Club mixes of this tune (Feb. 1997); but I was promoting "Love Commandments" for singer Gisele Jackson...I asked for a 'promo' of the mixes, and .......I *HATED* them! (the Sylk 130 mixes were awesome, though....)
    - ...SO, I turned them down....but, then I got "Things Just Ain't The Same" from Deborah Cox, and I had a MASSIVE, MASSIVE HIT with Deborah! ...So, I forgot ALL about Paula!
....that is, until we ran into each other in 1998 at the Grammys at Radio City in NYC..... *OOPS* ....... (6:07) ...this tune peaked at #8 Pop in 1997....

Paula Cole is not really a country singer. I know it starts a bit that way but it's really not a country song, but I think your analysis of the meaning is right. Kind of "Where is my knight (or cowboy) in shining armor?"
