I first realized how much vocal talent Paula Cole has when she sang "The Look of Love" on the Chris Botti LIVE with orchestra & Special Guests DVD. If anyone wants to gauge there talent, sing this great Burt Bacharach song.
I’m a 48 year old black man and I used to be in love with Paula Cole and this song back in my college years. This song was also on the charts around the same time as Sarah McLaughlin’s ‘Building A Mystery’. Another artist you should check out.
The radio version of Where Have All The Cowboys Gone cuts off this beautiful operatic singing that she does for the outro. It’s part of what makes the song and it shows off a bit of what she can do. Please check out the album or extended version, ASAP. 😉
...this was around the time Music Artists were allowing their tunes to be used in TV Shows, Ads, etc. then, the "Dawson" thing made SERIOUS moolah....Paula was used in a LOT of them........
This song grew on me when it was out but then it got so overplayed on the radio that I could not stand it anymore. I can appreciate it again now after not hearing it for a while and really like your interpretation of the lyrics. I do remember Paula having at least a few hit songs but then she seemed to fade away from the mainstream.

Paula Cole is not really a country singer. I know it starts a bit that way but it's really not a country song, but I think your analysis of the meaning is right. Kind of "Where is my knight (or cowboy) in shining armor?"
I was JUST thinking that. It is similar to Fast Car, without the poverty. The wife sits at home while he’s out drinking, and doing lord knows what else.
The mid-late-90s was a great time for singer-songwriters, and I remember loving this song in high school.
The second single fom that debut album is I Don't Want To Wait. Another great track from a very talented artist.

This is one of my favourite songs from 1996/97. Great choice to review.

@@shorty9617 my FAVORITE by her.
I think I remember hearing this from a movie or television series. Cool song. Nice vocals. The end of the song lifted it with the yippies.
