I so hear ya, M&G! My greencheek chewed nothing but his toys; my Sun Conure/Hahn's Macaw hybrid chews nothing but the house (well, she also loves toys, but the house is preferable 🙄). She started on the door frame, then the window frames, and now completely totalled my curtains (She lives uncaged). She's like a one-parrot-demolition team 😂 That said, I love her to bits, couldn't live without her, or as Marlene said, couldn't live without a bird in my life! But definitely, folks, be aware of ALL this before bringing a blurb home. Also: beware your fittings and paint are non-toxic with chewers around!
This is an excellent video! I currently have 11 birds, I’ve moved for them, I’ve built for them. George is right, there’s no going back, and I don’t recommend them! They are wild, complicated creatures and all so very different even within their own species. Godspeed you two! I thank you for doing the work of a rescuer.
I only have 1, but he's a macaw. Destroys EVERYTHING. Still love him, but so much time, work, money, and energy goes into fixing the things he ruins. This is such a good video! People just don't understand what kind of commitment and sacrifice bird ownership is.
I have a female moustache parakeet too and she shreds everything. Beds, mouldings, doors, all furniture. Listen to George and Marlene and don’t go looking for the problems 😅. I always think about the time and money I would have if I didn’t have 5 birds and 2 dogs but it’s just too darn late. I’m in it for life now. 😊

Oh Marlene! You are so right about the chewing. I have a Moluccan Cockatoo named Kelli Sue. She has “cockatooed” many items and parts of my house as well. I think George makes a very valid point that people shouldn’t just get a bird before researching and spending time with a parrot. This is why I started a channels, however I am not a famous actress nor am I well spoken. I just want people to see what it is like to have a parrot in my home day to day. I only have a handful of subs, but if it helps even one bird it is all worth it to me. Might I ask, would it be okay to share this video on my own channel? You are both so lovely and well spoken. I have 5 cocktails and 1 budgie. They just adore chewing the fireplace. Then I figured maybe they were missing something in their diet. I got a Manu mineral block. It actually worked, they love that mineral block. No more chewing on the fireplace. I also have lots of paper for them to chew. We were changing up our bookshelves and there were chew marks on a lot of them. LOL one of my babies loved chewing on my pants when I sat, he was always in my knee. All my right knees have little holes in them.
Looks like they have been engaged and not caged. They are very healthy and doing what comes natural. Eating up the cabinets looking for trouble. 👿 Gotta love these little beings of joy!

Marlene, I wish you would have put this video out 7 years ago, when I bought my African Grey at 4 months old. Your videos back then made it look like having birds was a piece of cake and there were no issues with having them outside of the cage. I've had to learn the hard way with my Grey to prevent my kitchen from looking like yours. I'd say to myself, geesh Marlene's birds and others I watched on RUclips are so good and not destructive! Thanks for finally putting this video out and keeping it real, because birds are majorly destructive, when they aren't caged and watched closely. Best of luck on the kitchen renovation. 🙂

Yup. I have 2 cockatiels. One chewed the wall next to his cage and behind his cage. The other chews everything. (Paper,plastic,wall,my food, boxes,everything) Lol. Small but mighty. 😂
I have 3 rescued conures - it is the little one, a Greencheek who is a bully to our Sun Conure and also chews the wood trim. Fortunately, he has a lot of personality and can say a few phrases to distract us. I had to put PBC corner caps on top of all the window trim in the kitchen. Luckily, the rest of the house does not have much window trim as it is plaster. They were free to fly where they wanted before my daughter moved in with a newborn. Now they have a very well-equipped bird room with a large window. The time it has saved in tracking down poop from when they fly around the house has been amazing. While I wish they were still able to fly around more, I am happy they enjoy their room. Having the mess contained has saved me tons of time and worry.
Birds are very destructive, but I still love the little thugs ❤ I always wanted a capuchin monkey, but the thought of changing monkey diapers for 30 yrs changed my mind 😅 I'll stick with my birds lol
Its so true, when you have pets they cause a lot of damage. My rabbits have chewed baseboards and doors, my dogs have chewed baseboards and the bottom corner of my pantry along with ruining the grass and bushes. I am luckly to have a bird room and mostly small bird's but they have chewed the walls, top of the door, the mural etc. My fish are the best pets as they dont cause damage unless their tank leaks on the floor.
My dog chewed up my carpet 6 years ago. I just put the sofa over it. I have a cat that pees on clothes or blankets if she can get to them. I also have children with all kinds of flaws and imperfect behavior but I just deal with it and move on where they are concerned as well. Because they are all my family (human or otherwise) and I love them.
My little Meyer's parrot some how flies upsidedown and is able to grasp the strips that hold up the ceiling tiles and chews the tiles. I don't know how she does it. The military needs to come and study her flight patterns.😂 She chews everything. I love her and couldn't live without her.

I totally understand. I have four parrots and we have had to replace blinds, one of my birds chewed through the carpet trying to built a nest, we have replaced tops of doors, repaint walls, blankets, cloth chairs, etc.. but we love them and they fly around the house and are happy and healthy. Not to mention we have three dogs and they have their issues too.
RIP sequined clothing!! LOL, I have studded Jackets that I will not wear around the birds, I feel you. DO you look at clothes and jewelry as bird toys? Literally thats is always the first thing that comes to my mind, when shopping.
Oh my goodness and I thought my bird was bad I can't even imagine having more then one at a time birds almost always are looking for trouble but I still love them.
LOL, I love you guys! This reminds me of my house- cockatoos eating walls and chewing up molding EVERYwhere; a macaw who tears up the couch, throws anything left on the kitchen counter (often glass), and won't let me do anything- and especially won't let any other bird or person near me when I go downstairs (I have MS and spend more time in bed than she'd prefer, so she screams- a lot). Despite this, and much more, I love them with all my heart. I often think about, and feel guilty about them having been bred as pets, and buying them as babies, and that as much as we try to do, they will never experience the lives they were supposed to live, in the wild because we didn't feel we had the experience to handle the issues that can come with rescues. I know that someone would have purchased them, and perhaps would be unprepared to deal with their natural behaviors- as you see in Maureen's video- and that they would end up in rescue situations, which will never happen in our house full of bird lovers. I know these 5 year old parrots will outlive my husband and I. It's possible they could even outlive our children, who will care for them once we are gone- and that scares me, though there are other family members, hopefully my eventual grandchildren who will grow up with the knowledge of how to treat them properly. As George and Marlene say, birds are a LOT- a lot of joy, as well as a lot of destruction- not to mention expensive, and not just due to the messes they often cause. Their care, nutrition, toys, annual visits to specialized vets, frequent need of nail and beak maintenance (PLEASE do not trim your birds' wings- or even have one without access to a vet specializing in birds!!). To us, they're worth all the grief because we love them so much and enjoy them flying about the house, and climbing the stairs looking for this or that person (or to cause mischief). They're a lot of work. We have multiple very expensive air filtering units, as my husband has lung issues due to Long Covid and was mis-diagnosed as having Bird Fancier's Lung (a life threatening disease). Fortunately the filtration systems have kept their dander under control, and the air quality under control. They are like our children, and we have made many sacrifices for them. Knowing what I now know, I wish people would not breed large parrots for pets.
I'm so glad you made this video. This is a common reason birds are surrendered in our area. People don't understand when i tell them they are destructive and expensive. The cost isn't just health, food, and toys but this as well. It's the hidden financial AND emotional damage. Especially when they destroy something sentimental. They don't know any better. 😢
Yes, this is all true. I have two African grays and two Senegalese at home and the story is the same, except that with one Senegalese it is dangerous the fact that he always bites every other parrot only in the legs, where it is most certain that the bird will surely be injured
My cat has never chewed or scratched anything. She had many scratching posts. My dogs never peed or pooped in the house. I used to pick up daily outside and used a litter locker to hold and dispose of the poop. I kept it in the garage.
My cats are pretty good but Cali did ruin this one chair, we weren't prepared because she had never scratched any other chairs, then we brought this one home and thats when we learnt she apparently likes leather. We did discover the yard issue, we have artificial grass but not pet turf, so it doesnt drain right. that and the guy behind us had 4 dogs.
One of my parakeets ate a hole in the wall at the top next to the air vent. She fell down to the bottom of the wall. Scott had to slowly break out 3 feet of the wall to find her. Such a mess she made. We have 17 parakeets and 5 cockatiels free flying in the bird room and Penelope is the only one that did such damage.
OMG!! BRANDO DID THIS EXACT THING!!! I have it on video George opening the wall to get her out!! They are so crazy!! And she acted like she didn't want to come out!
I had a cockatoo. She would sit on top of her cage and there never was a problem. She always just stayed there. In this room I had a large wicker Victorian baby carriage. One day I came back in the room and there was all this stuff on the floor. I'm like, "What the hell is that?" She had destroyed the whole top of the hood. My fault. I shoud have known better than to leave her alone in that room.
As soon as you said Wicker, I was like uh oh!!! I feel you!! thats the thing they are so perfect then theres that one new thing plus a little boredom and there it goes.
My smallest bird, a brown head, is the only one who chews on door frames. Not one of my other 7 birds, including my Amazon, chews on anything but their toys. They have wood, cork and paper to chew on. And they are terrified of my Christmas tree.
I have a 7 foot couch with 3 cushions. Well let me say USED to be 3 cushions. My sun conure made nests out of 2 of them. I mean literally half of the cushion is completely chewed up and gone! I have only 1 cushion I can sit on now. But you know what? I don't mind one single bit! Because that is NOTHING compared to all of the goofiness, all of the happiness, and all of the love that he shares with me every single day and I wouldn't change that for the world! He is my heart and soul and always will be! ❤❤❤
@Nancy-n4w4j yes I do and I take him in for a checkup every year and he is perfectly fine and healthy. He actually did this when I first got the couch about 10 years ago. It was a used couch so I wasn't too concerned. Anyway he chewed up the cushions until they were to his liking and now he just hangs out in them once in a while.
my window frames are holding by a thread, there are holes in every shirt I wear, my couch looks exactly like yours, and my furniture is crying out of exhaustion and constant ab*se, and I own just 1 little 4 yrs old african grey... but I wouldnt have it any other way :D
Yes our house is their jungle. Except the wood doesn’t grow back. We try to contain it to one room. We kept a camera on them when we left town. One stinker learned before we leave to unhook the feed bowl to his cage while he was free and act all caged up and sad before we leave. We were 40 miles from home when I checked on them. He was out chewing on our countertop and slowly heading to our laptop. Heart attack! We headed home as fast as we could! We got him before he got to the laptop. Needless to say we check everything twice before we leave. Like everyone learns you can’t watch them all the time. I have my holy clothes when at home (clothes are their favorite holes everywhere) Good idea about a separate room.

My Quaker Smarty Pants (named that because on day one he let himself out the cage) never damaged as much as my kids did. Kids also damage things. I remember as a young mom thinking if you just watched them carefully and taught them well... you had no problems. 2 years after my first baby... everything that had been out and breakable was either broken or packed away. My son (3rd child... we never learned) got the chocolate syrup and made a giant "drawing" all over our brand new living room carpet and furniture. He was 2. I found it and was like... Oh my... What did you do? (Trying not to yell and freak out)... He says... "Mommy, my masterpiece. " ... Ok, I had to turn around and not laugh and be proud at the same time that my son used the word masterpiece correctly at age 2. My middle child was a wall scribbler. The other two never did that. Oh... and the computer. Brand new monitor. Day 1... 2 year old blew it up by "cleaning it by squirting it with a whole bottle of fabreeze". It's life. Protect what you can... laugh about the rest.
@@iSheree True.... but it depends on how many human children you have and how they are spaced out. Mine were pretty spaced out so there was often at least one toddler around. Plus they go from unintentionally destroying things to still accidentally breaking things. Boys do this until they leave home... like throwing a ball in the house when they aren't supposed to or whatever. I broke my parents ceiling fan at 17 because I was supposed to be cleaning and was goofing around with the broom instead. AND they bring their friends... at least birds aren't inviting over other birds. The point is the same. Kids are our kids and mess stuff up. Birds are also our kids and mess stuff up. CRAP happens with either of them. Also ... it's a sad fact that birds often don't live their full lifespan in most homes for various reasons..... especially if like me you have rehomes and rescues. They come with with bad health.... shorter lifespans... and often bad habits. But we still love and try to give them the best of whatever years they have left. The main difference is that others in society find it acceptable to make excuses for those of us with human children that mess things up. But they just think you are crazy if it is pets doing it. It's not. It's love and FAMILY either way.
@@TheBioExplorer Yeah I completely agree. I have 4 birds and my latest rescue is a 20 month old GCC that has been in 3 homes before me. It breaks my heart. People need to realise that birds are loud, messy and destructive almost like human children BEFORE getting a bird. When you have a kid, you know, but when you get a bird, you don't get told this a lot.... you just see cute videos on RUclips or something and think "I will get a bird, it will be so cute and cool!". Sadly most of the time they get locked up in cages. I am at my limit now with 4 of them in a rental, I wish I could rescue more.
@@iSheree I've actually taken in more reptiles than birds. And it's true they don't (USUALLY) cause the same damage but we still have people that get them with the same lack of knowledge and it's just as heartbreaking. I took in two adult green iguanas from different "homes". One was pretty well behaved and had been handled an decently taken care of.... and was friendly to handle. The owners just got tired of buying larger enclosures. The other was an ill tempered crazy lizard that would whip you with it's tail at any opportunity.... but had good reason to be. The family had kept it outdoors ALL year (cold or hot) in a cage on their porch. All he had was a heating bulb sitting directly on top of the cage. The lizard was able to climb and get as close as possible to the bulb to try and stay warm. It actually had marks on it's head from being burned by the bulb. My current rescue is a juvenile Savannah Monitor. I went to my favorite local pet store one day. They know me well from all the stuff I have to buy. They thrust him in my arms and said.... "You need to take him home. We will give you all his stuff." Turned out the owners brought him hoping to get the pet store to sell him for them. They had only had him probably a few months.... but then must have figured out that how HUGE they get and expensive they are. To the pet store's credit they refused to do that... but said they would try to find him a home.... meaning me... knowing I'm a sucker for such situations. This baby.... now a foot long... while eventually be at least 4 feet long and hefty. He will need a room basically to roam around. I've already bought one larger tank... and am looking for the next step up. If anyone has 6ft long and fairly wide tank sitting in storage... and willing to take a cheap price or donate.... I'm ALL EARS! Just feeder animals; bulbs; and other equipment is so expensive. Also I guess it also needs to be at least within a few states driving distance of South Carolina as shipping is expensive.
Our Rosie is currently burrowing a nest in our box spring.. besides locking her in her cage I don't know how to stop her..Our Amazon doesn't do a lot of chewing but he throws his food on the wall and because both are always free there's pee pee pads all over our house
I'm so lucky, my Amazon Gigi does not chew wood!! She chews on soft material, my clothes!! I have clothes that I wear only when I'm chilling with her on the couch. She will sometimes chew on some of her toys. Years ago I had an Amazon named Martha...now she destroyed my sons wood bedroom furniture! So, I know what you're talking about! 😅
I tell people all the time, don't get birds. Love them but damn they are a lot! I see spots all over that the animals have ruined. Tempting to fix them but i know they will do it again. Luckily ours haven't gotten to the cabinets... yet
Thank god you found another who loves animals and is willing to accept all the problems that comes with owning pets ✨ I only have one bird and because it’s only one, I’m able to prevent a lot of damage to my house with just paying attention and giving him a lot of toys to chew. But for those with multiple birds it’s much more difficult to do that because you can’t really keep you eyes on more than one or maybe two at a time. My cats really does damage too though, but remember they don’t destroy velvet and alcantara fabrics, so we saved ourselves a lot of problems by buying chairs and a couch with velvet ✨
Primates (monkeys) do not make good pets. All species are intensely social animals, and should be housed in groups for the benefit of their mental health. They often (like birds) develop an affinity for one member of the family and may display aggression towards other humans in the house. Monkeys housed without members of their own species often develop behavioral problems. Each species has a specialized dietary requirements. If you don’t feed them the right food, it can result in permanent harm to the animal. Monkeys are generally tropical species, so they need a lot of direct sunlight to stay healthy. If they don’t get enough sunlight, they need a vitamin D supplement to avoid rickets and bone deformation. So best to house them in groups with access to both inside and outside enclosures.
One of my cats would wait till I would go to sleep & he would Chew my charger until it really didnt look like any thing I Could Repair !!! Also I will not have another Man live in my house with me. Id get a another Kitten because They are easy to Train & Do Not Talk !!! My black cat Was 17 & was the last of my Cat Family. They were with me though some of the most diffcult & depressing times in my life. I really do feel empity inside now. Its just not the right time to have another Cat/Kitten in my home.

Sorry to see all the damage that was done to your house. I love birds very much. However, I think they need to live in their natural habitats with their on flock. I understand the need to rescue the birds that will not survive on their own in a natural habitat because they always lived in captivity. We need to stop taking birds from their habitat. This is where they belong.
I love my bird and I’ve had up to 17 at one time and they never destroyed anything. I watch them while they’re out and now that I’m down to one 29 year old grey it’s never going to be a concern. I would never let any animal destroy what my husband and I have worked so hard for. That’s just outrageous and that stain and paint can be harmful to your birds .
Oh boy, I can identify. Birds are very destructive, it's their nature to chew. Yes, you buy them chew toys but they are wild and need to roam. You can't lock them in their cages because that is abuse to the bird. Just know what you are getting yourself into if you want a parrot.

I tell people the same thing with caring for house rabbits. They will damage your house. Chew cables. Rip up carpet. Eat base boards. Rabbits are not easy pets.

This is gonna sound critical i'm sure because i have autism and everyone always says that, but instead of spending all that money on the molding and fixtures and everything why don't you just build an aviary in the yard before you fix everything just to have the birds destroy it again? Again, not trying to sound critical i'm truly curious about why you don't build an aviary. I donate mice to a raptor rescue - now as you said - farm - they have a giant aviary for rehabilitating wild raptor birds, but for indoor animals, surely a smaller one would work, then you can take them inside a few at a time for supervised time ya know?
Not critical at all, its a valid question. We do have an aviary for our birds and if the weather is nice, (and it is a lot here in California) they love being outside but I would never keep them outside. What we normally do is eat breakfast with them and then some go outside, I can tell who wants to go and then they come in before dinner and eat with us. We are building the bird room so they can have freedom all the time but without bars.
The best advice they gave is just don't get a bird. But this place is out of hand the bird should not be allowed to roam loose in a home. There are many toxic materials in common home products that they can get into, including finish on cabinets and other things. The problem is they have too many pet birds. Having too many single pet birds is a disservice to them. You can never provide the correct attention to that many. I have 3 pet birds and I believe that is too many. My birds have their own room.They do stay in the cage when not being watched.But they come out they live full.Happy lives.They are full flighted well.Fed and well cared for but my home is also not destroyed
Why on earth would you want to keep so many burds. Birds however beautiful are basically destructive. With so many birds what on earth do you expect. Birds are not home friendly by nature they are meant to be free.

I have 5 cocktails and 1 budgie. They just adore chewing the fireplace. Then I figured maybe they were missing something in their diet. I got a Manu mineral block. It actually worked, they love that mineral block. No more chewing on the fireplace. I also have lots of paper for them to chew. We were changing up our bookshelves and there were chew marks on a lot of them. LOL one of my babies loved chewing on my pants when I sat, he was always in my knee. All my right knees have little holes in them.
Looks like they have been engaged and not caged. They are very healthy and doing what comes natural. Eating up the cabinets looking for trouble. 👿 Gotta love these little beings of joy!

Marlene, I wish you would have put this video out 7 years ago, when I bought my African Grey at 4 months old. Your videos back then made it look like having birds was a piece of cake and there were no issues with having them outside of the cage. I've had to learn the hard way with my Grey to prevent my kitchen from looking like yours. I'd say to myself, geesh Marlene's birds and others I watched on RUclips are so good and not destructive! Thanks for finally putting this video out and keeping it real, because birds are majorly destructive, when they aren't caged and watched closely. Best of luck on the kitchen renovation. 🙂

Yup. I have 2 cockatiels. One chewed the wall next to his cage and behind his cage. The other chews everything. (Paper,plastic,wall,my food, boxes,everything)

I have 3 rescued conures - it is the little one, a Greencheek who is a bully to our Sun Conure and also chews the wood trim. Fortunately, he has a lot of personality and can say a few phrases to distract us. I had to put PBC corner caps on top of all the window trim in the kitchen. Luckily, the rest of the house does not have much window trim as it is plaster. They were free to fly where they wanted before my daughter moved in with a newborn. Now they have a very well-equipped bird room with a large window. The time it has saved in tracking down poop from when they fly around the house has been amazing. While I wish they were still able to fly around more, I am happy they enjoy their room. Having the mess contained has saved me tons of time and worry.
Birds are very destructive, but I still love the little thugs ❤ I always wanted a capuchin monkey, but the thought of changing monkey diapers for 30 yrs changed my mind 😅 I'll stick with my birds lol

Its so true, when you have pets they cause a lot of damage. My rabbits have chewed baseboards and doors, my dogs have chewed baseboards and the bottom corner of my pantry along with ruining the grass and bushes. I am luckly to have a bird room and mostly small bird's but they have chewed the walls, top of the door, the mural etc.
My fish are the best pets as they dont cause damage unless their tank leaks on the floor.
My dog chewed up my carpet 6 years ago. I just put the sofa over it. I have a cat that pees on clothes or blankets if she can get to them.
I also have children with all kinds of flaws and imperfect behavior but I just deal with it and move on where they are concerned as well. Because they are all my family (human or otherwise) and I love them.

My little Meyer's parrot some how flies upsidedown and is able to grasp the strips that hold up the ceiling tiles and chews the tiles. I don't know how she does it. The military needs to come and study her flight patterns.😂 She chews everything. I love her and couldn't live without her.

I totally understand. I have four parrots and we have had to replace blinds, one of my birds chewed through the carpet trying to built a nest, we have replaced tops of doors, repaint walls, blankets, cloth chairs, etc.. but we love them and they fly around the house and are happy and healthy. Not to mention we have three dogs and they have their issues too.
Our cockatiel likes the chew off the sequins on my sister’s dress! We still love our birds!! 😊

LOL, I love you guys! This reminds me of my house- cockatoos eating walls and chewing up molding EVERYwhere; a macaw who tears up the couch, throws anything left on the kitchen counter (often glass), and won't let me do anything- and especially won't let any other bird or person near me when I go downstairs (I have MS and spend more time in bed than she'd prefer, so she screams- a lot). Despite this, and much more, I love them with all my heart. I often think about, and feel guilty about them having been bred as pets, and buying them as babies, and that as much as we try to do, they will never experience the lives they were supposed to live, in the wild because we didn't feel we had the experience to handle the issues that can come with rescues. I know that someone would have purchased them, and perhaps would be unprepared to deal with their natural behaviors- as you see in Maureen's video- and that they would end up in rescue situations, which will never happen in our house full of bird lovers. I know these 5 year old parrots will outlive my husband and I. It's possible they could even outlive our children, who will care for them once we are gone- and that scares me, though there are other family members, hopefully my eventual grandchildren who will grow up with the knowledge of how to treat them properly.
As George and Marlene say, birds are a LOT- a lot of joy, as well as a lot of destruction- not to mention expensive, and not just due to the messes they often cause. Their care, nutrition, toys, annual visits to specialized vets, frequent need of nail and beak maintenance (PLEASE do not trim your birds' wings- or even have one without access to a vet specializing in birds!!). To us, they're worth all the grief because we love them so much and enjoy them flying about the house, and climbing the stairs looking for this or that person (or to cause mischief). They're a lot of work. We have multiple very expensive air filtering units, as my husband has lung issues due to Long Covid and was mis-diagnosed as having Bird Fancier's Lung (a life threatening disease). Fortunately the filtration systems have kept their dander under control, and the air quality under control. They are like our children, and we have made many sacrifices for them.
Knowing what I now know, I wish people would not breed large parrots for pets.
I'm so glad you made this video. This is a common reason birds are surrendered in our area. People don't understand when i tell them they are destructive and expensive. The cost isn't just health, food, and toys but this as well. It's the hidden financial AND emotional damage. Especially when they destroy something sentimental. They don't know any better. 😢

Yes, this is all true. I have two African grays and two Senegalese at home and the story is the same, except that with one Senegalese it is dangerous the fact that he always bites every other parrot only in the legs, where it is most certain that the bird will surely be injured
My cat has never chewed or scratched anything. She had many scratching posts. My dogs never peed or pooped in the house. I used to pick up daily outside and used a litter locker to hold and dispose of the poop. I kept it in the garage.
My cats are pretty good but Cali did ruin this one chair, we weren't prepared because she had never scratched any other chairs, then we brought this one home and thats when we learnt she apparently likes leather. We did discover the yard issue, we have artificial grass but not pet turf, so it doesnt drain right. that and the guy behind us had 4 dogs.
One of my parakeets ate a hole in the wall at the top next to the air vent. She fell down to the bottom of the wall. Scott had to slowly break out 3 feet of the wall to find her. Such a mess she made. We have 17 parakeets and 5 cockatiels free flying in the bird room and Penelope is the only one that did such damage.

I had a cockatoo. She would sit on top of her cage and there never was a problem. She always just stayed there. In this room I had a large wicker Victorian baby carriage. One day I came back in the room and there was all this stuff on the floor. I'm like, "What the hell is that?" She had destroyed the whole top of the hood. My fault. I shoud have known better than to leave her alone in that room.
As soon as you said Wicker, I was like uh oh!!! I feel you!! thats the thing they are so perfect then theres that one new thing plus a little boredom and there it goes.
My smallest bird, a brown head, is the only one who chews on door frames. Not one of my other 7 birds, including my Amazon, chews on anything but their toys. They have wood, cork and paper to chew on.
And they are terrified of my Christmas tree.

I have a 7 foot couch with 3 cushions. Well let me say USED to be 3 cushions. My sun conure made nests out of 2 of them. I mean literally half of the cushion is completely chewed up and gone! I have only 1 cushion I can sit on now. But you know what? I don't mind one single bit! Because that is NOTHING compared to all of the goofiness, all of the happiness, and all of the love that he shares with me every single day and I wouldn't change that for the world! He is my heart and soul and always will be! ❤❤❤
Do you realize that there is toxic material in sofas, chairs, etc that could harm your birds. Read the labels on them and on your mattresses.
@Nancy-n4w4j yes I do and I take him in for a checkup every year and he is perfectly fine and healthy. He actually did this when I first got the couch about 10 years ago. It was a used couch so I wasn't too concerned. Anyway he chewed up the cushions until they were to his liking and now he just hangs out in them once in a while.

Yes our house is their jungle. Except the wood doesn’t grow back. We try to contain it to one room. We kept a camera on them when we left town. One stinker learned before we leave to unhook the feed bowl to his cage while he was free and act all caged up and sad before we leave. We were 40 miles from home when I checked on them. He was out chewing on our countertop and slowly heading to our laptop. Heart attack! We headed home as fast as we could! We got him before he got to the laptop. Needless to say we check everything twice before we leave. Like everyone learns you can’t watch them all the time. I have my holy clothes when at home (clothes are their favorite holes everywhere) Good idea about a separate room.

My Quaker Smarty Pants (named that because on day one he let himself out the cage) never damaged as much as my kids did. Kids also damage things. I remember as a young mom thinking if you just watched them carefully and taught them well... you had no problems. 2 years after my first baby... everything that had been out and breakable was either broken or packed away. My son (3rd child... we never learned) got the chocolate syrup and made a giant "drawing" all over our brand new living room carpet and furniture. He was 2. I found it and was like... Oh my... What did you do? (Trying not to yell and freak out)... He says... "Mommy, my masterpiece. " ... Ok, I had to turn around and not laugh and be proud at the same time that my son used the word masterpiece correctly at age 2. My middle child was a wall scribbler. The other two never did that. Oh... and the computer. Brand new monitor. Day 1... 2 year old blew it up by "cleaning it by squirting it with a whole bottle of fabreeze". It's life. Protect what you can... laugh about the rest.

@@iSheree True.... but it depends on how many human children you have and how they are spaced out. Mine were pretty spaced out so there was often at least one toddler around.
Plus they go from unintentionally destroying things to still accidentally breaking things. Boys do this until they leave home... like throwing a ball in the house when they aren't supposed to or whatever. I broke my parents ceiling fan at 17 because I was supposed to be cleaning and was goofing around with the broom instead. AND they bring their friends... at least birds aren't inviting over other birds.
The point is the same. Kids are our kids and mess stuff up. Birds are also our kids and mess stuff up. CRAP happens with either of them. Also ... it's a sad fact that birds often don't live their full lifespan in most homes for various reasons..... especially if like me you have rehomes and rescues. They come with with bad health.... shorter lifespans... and often bad habits. But we still love and try to give them the best of whatever years they have left.
The main difference is that others in society find it acceptable to make excuses for those of us with human children that mess things up. But they just think you are crazy if it is pets doing it. It's not. It's love and FAMILY either way.
@@TheBioExplorer Yeah I completely agree. I have 4 birds and my latest rescue is a 20 month old GCC that has been in 3 homes before me. It breaks my heart. People need to realise that birds are loud, messy and destructive almost like human children BEFORE getting a bird. When you have a kid, you know, but when you get a bird, you don't get told this a lot.... you just see cute videos on RUclips or something and think "I will get a bird, it will be so cute and cool!". Sadly most of the time they get locked up in cages. I am at my limit now with 4 of them in a rental, I wish I could rescue more.
@@iSheree I've actually taken in more reptiles than birds. And it's true they don't (USUALLY) cause the same damage but we still have people that get them with the same lack of knowledge and it's just as heartbreaking. I took in two adult green iguanas from different "homes".
One was pretty well behaved and had been handled an decently taken care of.... and was friendly to handle. The owners just got tired of buying larger enclosures. The other was an ill tempered crazy lizard that would whip you with it's tail at any opportunity.... but had good reason to be.
The family had kept it outdoors ALL year (cold or hot) in a cage on their porch. All he had was a heating bulb sitting directly on top of the cage. The lizard was able to climb and get as close as possible to the bulb to try and stay warm. It actually had marks on it's head from being burned by the bulb.
My current rescue is a juvenile Savannah Monitor. I went to my favorite local pet store one day. They know me well from all the stuff I have to buy. They thrust him in my arms and said.... "You need to take him home. We will give you all his stuff." Turned out the owners brought him hoping to get the pet store to sell him for them. They had only had him probably a few months.... but then must have figured out that how HUGE they get and expensive they are.
To the pet store's credit they refused to do that... but said they would try to find him a home.... meaning me... knowing I'm a sucker for such situations. This baby.... now a foot long... while eventually be at least 4 feet long and hefty. He will need a room basically to roam around. I've already bought one larger tank... and am looking for the next step up.
If anyone has 6ft long and fairly wide tank sitting in storage... and willing to take a cheap price or donate.... I'm ALL EARS! Just feeder animals; bulbs; and other equipment is so expensive. Also I guess it also needs to be at least within a few states driving distance of South Carolina as shipping is expensive.
Our Rosie is currently burrowing a nest in our box spring.. besides locking her in her cage I don't know how to stop her..Our Amazon doesn't do a lot of chewing but he throws his food on the wall and because both are always free there's pee pee pads all over our house

I tell people all the time, don't get birds. Love them but damn they are a lot! I see spots all over that the animals have ruined. Tempting to fix them but i know they will do it again. Luckily ours haven't gotten to the cabinets... yet

I only have one bird and because it’s only one, I’m able to prevent a lot of damage to my house with just paying attention and giving him a lot of toys to chew. But for those with multiple birds it’s much more difficult to do that because you can’t really keep you eyes on more than one or maybe two at a time.
My cats really does damage too though, but remember they don’t destroy velvet and alcantara fabrics, so we saved ourselves a lot of problems by buying chairs and a couch with velvet ✨

Monkeys housed without members of their own species often develop behavioral problems.
Each species has a specialized dietary requirements. If you don’t feed them the right food, it can result in permanent harm to the animal.
Monkeys are generally tropical species, so they need a lot of direct sunlight to stay healthy. If they don’t get enough sunlight, they need a vitamin D supplement to avoid rickets and bone deformation.
So best to house them in groups with access to both inside and outside enclosures.

One of my cats would wait till I would go to sleep & he would Chew my charger until it really didnt look like any thing I Could Repair !!! Also I will not have another Man live in my house with me. Id get a another Kitten because They are easy to Train & Do Not Talk !!! My black cat Was 17 & was the last of my Cat Family. They were with me though some of the most diffcult & depressing times in my life. I really do feel empity inside now. Its just not the right time to have another Cat/Kitten in my home.

I love my bird and I’ve had up to 17 at one time and they never destroyed anything. I watch them while they’re out and now that I’m down to one 29 year old grey it’s never going to be a concern. I would never let any animal destroy what my husband and I have worked so hard for. That’s just outrageous and that stain and paint can be harmful to your birds .

Oh boy, I can identify. Birds are very destructive, it's their nature to chew. Yes, you buy them chew toys but they are wild and need to roam. You can't lock them in their cages because that is abuse to the bird. Just know what you are getting yourself into if you want a parrot.

I tell people the same thing with caring for house rabbits. They will damage your house. Chew cables. Rip up carpet. Eat base boards. Rabbits are not easy pets.

This is gonna sound critical i'm sure because i have autism and everyone always says that, but instead of spending all that money on the molding and fixtures and everything why don't you just build an aviary in the yard before you fix everything just to have the birds destroy it again? Again, not trying to sound critical i'm truly curious about why you don't build an aviary.
I donate mice to a raptor rescue - now as you said - farm - they have a giant aviary for rehabilitating wild raptor birds, but for indoor animals, surely a smaller one would work, then you can take them inside a few at a time for supervised time ya know?
Not critical at all, its a valid question. We do have an aviary for our birds and if the weather is nice, (and it is a lot here in California) they love being outside but I would never keep them outside. What we normally do is eat breakfast with them and then some go outside, I can tell who wants to go and then they come in before dinner and eat with us. We are building the bird room so they can have freedom all the time but without bars.

The best advice they gave is just don't get a bird. But this place is out of hand the bird should not be allowed to roam loose in a home. There are many toxic materials in common home products that they can get into, including finish on cabinets and other things. The problem is they have too many pet birds. Having too many single pet birds is a disservice to them. You can never provide the correct attention to that many. I have 3 pet birds and I believe that is too many. My birds have their own room.They do stay in the cage when not being watched.But they come out they live full.Happy lives.They are full flighted well.Fed and well cared for but my home is also not destroyed
