I started this RUclips channel to help bridge the gap between beginner and experienced whisky drinkers. My hope is you will learn something interesting and hopefully spark your interest in Scotch whisky or whiskey in general. Thanks for watching!
You sound like you’re trying to play it off like you’re not drunk 😂
Decanters are for putting cheap liquor in a nice bottle so your friends are thinking that they're drinking something special and hide all your good bottles so they don't decide to go for them LOL
Frank Genner haha! I could not agree more.
Well Aged Scotch I was wondering if you could do a video of the difference between a cheap decanter and an expensive one
Thank you for the suggestion. I will keep it in mind. The only big difference between a cheap and expensive decanter would be the material it is made of. Cheap usually being made of glass and expensive with crystal glass, which is nice to look at but will not make the whisky taste any better.
Well Aged Scotch well thank you for responding . I meant I don't know the difference between a 100 dollar crystal decanter and a 500 dollar crystal decanter
Sounds good. I'll do a review on them if I can get my hands on some nice crystal decanters.
Shape is important, for the strong stuff you do not want it gushing out, plus with a tall bottle like you just filled can easily topper over. a heavy bottom is usually good for whisky, I would use that tall one for something like Gin or Vodka, and the round clear one for sherry or liquors.
but that's just me. thank you for sharing, good to know about the lose tops and corks.
I believe sunlight evaporates the drink, just like it does perfumes.
Decanter question: I have an old I.W. Harper decanter. Etched glass with the gentleman bowing to the lady. Sentimental old school. But it needs a new stopper cork to be put into service. This one is smaller than the standard size cork. Anyone know where I can get one or get it done?
This video was so helpful! Thank you!
Can you recommend (link) to the cork you use please. I try to find cork for decanters just in case the seal is not airtight. All I find is wine corks, not corks made for decanters or whiskey corks. Please help. thanks
Great and great information
Thanks I bought a crystal decanter today
I lreally like your set up behind you should do a tour on that
I think decanting whisky just speeds up oxidation and nobody is fooled anymore thinking it's "the good stuff" - we all know it's the cheap stuff dressed up in a handsome decanter.
Instead, I use my decanters for ready-to-go cocktails that are based on barrel-aged spirits. Eg. 1oz. Bourbon, 1oz. Brandy, bitters, 1/4 oz. Cointreau - all that it's waiting for is a glass with an ice-cube for those days when you just don't want to take the time to do it properly but "good enough" will do. Works great for a week and holds up well.
How best do you pour scotch/whisk(e)y into a decanter? Will pouring it straight in oxidize the liquid too much? My wife poured an entire bottle of lagavulin 16 into a decanter using a funnel. Just turned the bottle upside down and let it pour in. Is it ruined now due to oxidation?
Is there any difference of a decanter for whiskey or cognac? Or can you put both in the same decanter?
do decanters make good christmas gifts for high end scotch drinkers?
Very informative!
Think you can make me a box that is airtight? It can be the poor man's decanter/cask.
If we store liquor in a decanter ... does the alcohol evaporate and does it’s strength goes down?
I thought this young man had an opinion an spoke very well, and I did learn something about decanters.
can you recommend brands for whisky decanters / whisky glasses which look elegant and pretty for displaying (good quality) and still keep the whisky in a tasty condition? thx
I don't really have any suggestions for whisky decanters since I've stopped using them except on rare occasions. I will usually just pour the whisky back into the bottle when I'm done displaying it. The one thing to look for is a good stopper on a decanter, make sure it creates a really good seal. Your whisky will oxidize and thus not taste very good if it comes into contact with too much air. Finding the right glass will have to be done through trial and error since it according to your preference. Smaller mouth (Glencarin) will cause a strong but sometimes too strong taste and smell and wider mouth (tumbler) will make the whisky experience bland, but palatable. Also, don't get crystal (for decanter or glass), looks good but some people suspect it's dangerous.
Is it safe to store juice in crystal decanters?
Should i store Black Label inside a decanter?
Do you know about handmade leather decanters made in Italy? I've have 2 that have lion's heads that are probably early to mid century marked Italy.
kellie kells you can find some on eBay for $15-$30
can i mix different whisky together
just a tip, maybe you shouldn't be smashed drunk when doing the captions in your videos
jk
youtube
I always wonder what kind of whiskey is that, in the movies but now i know
I have a lead free decanter is that fine? Too. I put my 15 year old age scotch whisky inside.
If you store alcohol in a decanter with lead in it you're basically poisoning yourself.
🤣🤣some informative stuff but dang, you made me laugh through the entire vid! Keep on swigging!
WHICH IS BEST, CRYSTAL OR GLASS DECATERS?
Wow! I had no idea about the lead poisoning from using crystal. My mom just gave me a crystal decanter and was looking up which whisky i should put in it
It might depend on the age
Yeah she must want to end you
So you poured half a bottle of whisky into a decanter which is only half full. What difference does that make? Surely the whisky will oxygenise just the same in the original bottle if it has a decent top. Sounds like a bit of a fad to me.
Gary Robinson great point. I never thought of that perspective. I guess decanters serve no purpose besides looks.
How many ounces are those decanters?
Is it bad taste to put silver decanters under decanters please ?
What about the silicone cap? Do you think it's better to put it in a bottle that seals correctly? Or just with the glass cap? I heard that the whiskey evaporizes and can change the taste because of the air....
A silicone cap sounds like a great idea! I guess I never really thought about it since decanters really don't do much besides nicely display the whisky. Anything that seals correctly will work better than more decanters, which don't usually seal well. You're right about the air, it oxidizes and makes the whisky taste odd.
I have a glass (definitely not crystal) decanter with a plastic 'cork' which I'm now assuming is silicone. It does make the thing completely air-tight and I doubt it has any affect on taste. You can fill it, hold it upside down and get zero leakage. imo it's better than having a natural cork.
I don't know if you've heard of 'infinity bottles' but I'm going to use that decanter as mine. It's perfect for one.
Tell me if I’m wrong but to not pull chemicals you just simply need to buy a un-leaded decanter?
I bought a cheap decanter a few days ago
but it plays with the hermetic cap (silicone seal / plastic seal?) and does not close the decanter if it is full ............ jumps out as if the air pressure pushed it
some advice to solve? :(
Diego Dandaza drink some whisky so your decanter isn't as full.
Mines pops off even if empty. How can it be fixed?
Sober up before your next video
Do you mean lead crystal bottles?
shiftcon he is referring to lead crystal bleeding lead into your drink. however lead free crystal will be fine.
All true crystal contains lead .....non lead crystal is synthetic crystal , its not really crystal.
Decanters (with good cork) makes for good infinity bottles. Besides that, it's useless.
Just look for a lead free crystal decanter
Easy on the drinking buddy it’s slowed your brain
I love how this guy is drunk while doing this video!
The whole damn decanter.
Teachers taste funny from the moment it is bottled in the factory.
“Chemicals and what not”... really? doesn’t sound very well thought out there bud.
It absorbs lead from leaded crystal decanters which are the highest class of glass decanters. That is why you'd only like to store them short term, which generally only pulls a very small amount, even less than two water.
crystal is just cut glass.....why would it pull chemicals?? it's simply glass made from heated quartz instead of a sand quartz mixture..
Steven Dix good point. I only say that because it’s what I have always heard. Maybe it’s an issue with the finishing process.
Leaded crystal will leech lead especially if it's filled with a solvent like ethanol (alcohol).
I actually exact opposite about the glass not crystal
Crystal is typically made with lead sonny. These days you would get a non-lead crystal decanter (zinc, potassium or something instead) and continue to use the lead tumblers.
He's absolutely plastered.😂😂😂😂😂
Ok so that was terrible. The blanket statement of “crystal” decanter was poorly used as there are different crystals (some with lead some without) that can have stored liquor, crystalline for example. I would have done into the science of each crystal a bit myself.
Didn’t mention anything about important decanter maintenance. Probably worth updating to a new video mate.
To be honest, I can't see the point of decanters. I'd much rather show my bottles off!
That's a really good point. It's probably for people like me who put cheap whisky in there and act like they are special. I have another bottle of HP 12 that I can display.
I'd rather hide my bottles and keep the cheap nasty shit like jack Daniel's or Jim Beam out
@@lockedon8953 why even buy those brands if something a few bucks more, same price or even cheaper is going to taste better. For my cheap whisky of choise I keep mine stocked up on buffalo trace, cheap, available and pretty good whisky IMO (at least as a more "everyday" drink)
The point of them in the old days was the exact opposite . It was considered very poor manners and ungentlemanly to brag or showoff your liquors or tobacco, thus making guests feel less inclined to consume your choices out of guilt . Hence cigar labels were removed and re boxed , tobacco was out of presentation jars , and Scotch/wine was served from decanters .
Times change though. A more Jewish tradition to show your guests you are giving them the best you can afford .
This dude needs is spaced
You lost me at 1.38
U drunk?
Stuff and nonsense!
Didnt learn a thing. Thats why you get a lead free crystal decanter so you dont get chemicals in your hooch. Butthead. Just keep the whiskey in the original bottle. Lol.
