We have just got our second euro doberman, she's 4 months old and barks sometimes at strangers and dogs and is very timid (compared to our male doberman who we got at 4 months old this has been a real surprise as he has always been a very confident, friendly dog). my friend's sheltie circles us like a shark in anticipation of me throwing the ball. I find this behaviour dangerous as my friend is 75 and had a knee replacement only this week. I hoped she would pick up the clues as my dog has: left hand ball carry = walking (don't bother me) / right hand carry = game on, but it hasn't worked. She's a sweet girl, much smaller than the average sheltie and crazy fast at her circling antics. I would apply corrections but she isn't my dog. I do keep puting it in my friend's head that she can't afford a fall at this point in life; she says the dog has tripped her more than once. *sigh*

    Excellent video Joel! Thanks. My latest rescue dog (we think 4 yo APBT) is exactly like this guy. So far he’s loved everyone except my dad. 🤷‍♀️ Of course my dad (getting close to 80 years old) is a bit nervous about a dog that weighs about half what he does barking at him. But… we (my husband and I) have been able to handle him without a squeak since day one. Taking stuff he shouldn’t be eating out of his mouth, whatever). He knows my dad is nervous of him, so that makes him even more nervous. I’m going to muzzle train him, then have my dad walk up to him like a boss. He would have done this naturally years ago, but now… not so much.

    Just what I needed to understand better in dealing with my adolescent pup. Every now and then, I have noticed she has been going through a fearful stage. More often than not, she will bark at me boldly after separating her from my older dog. When barking at me, her body language looks fearful. I tried a clicker & treat method to put a stop to it. Because I was not confident it was done half-heartedly but after watching that young pup I can see I was on the right track.

    Story from my childhood. I rode the alleys of my neighborhood on bicycle a lot. One alley had a dog that would rush the fence, bark and snarl very aggressively. One time that dog jumped the fence and ran at me. I slammed my bike down, took a step forward, and in my most commanding voice said, "No, go home," Darned if he didn't do exactly that. Another alley I used had a "Beware of Dog" sign with a big red dobbie in the yard. Yeah, he barked at me. I made him my buddy. I loved that dog I never knew the name of. I probably shouldn't have rode the alleys.

      There's little devices you can get that make a high-pitched noise anytime they pick up loud barking. Dogs can hear it but people can't. They stop barking to see what the noise was and it trains them to stop.
      They're inexpensive and a lot of them are dressed up to look like little bird houses or something. I used one once to stop my neighbor's 5 small dogs' incessant barking.

    That looked like bold but insecure, I’m gonna look bigger than I am with Prince. Get him before he gets me, or he won’t come for me if I act a fool now, type of defensiveness. Which must be dealt with before he thinks that’s an Ok way to move through the world. Because right now it’s not bad, but if left unchecked as he gets older and bigger, it will inevitably become bad for the people and any dogs in his life. I love that you’re showing this and how to handle it. I have always a good read on Canine body language, since I’m a kid, and have always walked right past that, unsure dogs don’t know what to make of me but they can sense I’m not a threat and I’m not scared. I’ve been the friend that could handle the dogs that seemingly don’t like people for friends going out of town that need someone to feed and/or walk their dog or coming into their homes for a visit because they just can’t understand why it is but their dogs accept me 🤣 I just don’t buy their dogs phony front, so just they feel confident and secure in my presence.
    There is far too big of a growing contingency of people saying you have to let them be, you have to learn how to live with it rather that teach and guide that dog to get along safely and respectfully in the world. I see it every day on Reddit. People saying, insisting actually, things like territorial behavior, possessiveness and food aggression is an untrainable issue that you have to learn to live with and they sure have a million ways to accept that behavior. Not touching their dogs bed or toys, feeding them in different rooms, keeping them locked away when company comes over. It’s a miserable existence for those dogs. And it’s insanely dangerous advice. And I wish there weren’t people out here calling themselves trainers saying these asinine things.

    Awesome video Joel! 🙌🏼 I do have a question though (or if other viewers can also help answer my question). Our lab is 11 months old and has similar fear-ish behaviour. She is very socialized, but lately when she sees a stranger from a distance she will do this low growl, or a small bark when they pose absolutely no threat to us, or her. I’m thinking she’s definitely in her fear period, but what i’d like to know is do we correct this behaviour, or let her express herself until she gets over it? (When she is fearful of something, we don’t go anywhere and stay put until she relaxes again). Thanks!!

    I’ve got a 7 month old prapso pup (type of shih tzu) who barks at only certain strangers, with no particular reason or pattern.
    He pulls a lot and even with your technique for leash pulling he just seems to not say no at certain times.
    He drags our other shih tzu Alfie (standard tan and white) by the tail, grabs at his skin and when you block him or correct him with a lead he’ll still keep going.
    He’s not aggressive in any way, he just wants to play harder than most other people with dogs around us don’t like.
    What would be the best way to socialize him more? We are in Scotland and every dog trainer I’ve found has been pure positive only, no operant conditioning and no corrections.
    So I’m kinda stuck doing it myself, He was a single pup litter (apparently most prapsos are) I didn’t know what it was and he had to get dna tested. He’s a full bred shih tzu and crazy smart but he has a tenacity where he just keeps trying and trying no matter what it is.
    He’s mega food and toy driven. I hold back his ball toys to keep their high value aswell for training.

    But I was walking her by a gulf corse and there were golfers about 60 feet away and she freaked out and ended up I was holding her leash with hultie and collar and she ran out in the rd away from where the gilders were . Since then I changed the reg collar to a prong so if the hultie would slip off I wouldn’t loose her .
    So should I have stoped and made her face her fear or do what I did and made her stay with me ? Well tried to make her stay with me ,

    Hey Joel, what is your opinion on American Pitbull terriers and their reputation?
    Is the problem just with backyard type breeders and not with quality more expensive breeders? Or do you think they are going through a bad phase because of bad breeders like what happened with the Doberman many years ago with their reputation? Or something else?
    It's very hard to find good answers, I've found that most sources say that all breeds are the same and its 100% based on how you raise them. Which is partly true, because obviously raising them has to do with a LOT, but not all dog breeds are the same. I'm sure in general most of the dog breeds your clients bring you for aggression based work are the more fearless guard dog or fighting dog type breeds (such as German shepherds, pitbulls, bully type breeds ect...) rather than breeds like Labradors or Golden retrievers. On the other hand some people think that they shouldn't be owned at all, because they are too dangerous, which isn't true either because many people own them without a problem.
    Anyways, hard to tell what's going on with them, so knowing that you have first hand experience with hundreds of breeds, and knowing that you have been into breeds I'd thought I'd ask.
    Also congratulations on 120k subs. Just a month ago you had 20k less, lol.

    My Newfie pretty much never stops barking at me for no real apparent reason and it’s been driving me crazy. It’s like he’s just got an attitude/like demand barking. It’s not aggressive, or fear. I like to think I’m pretty dog savvy but all of my attempts to get him to stop have failed.
    There are some triggers to it I’ve noticed but other times it’s out of no where and obviously very frustrating.
    Like him being not neutered yet he constantly wants to hump and is obsessively sexual and when you correct him he goes bananas barking and will not stop. When I try to correct him he only gets more amped up and continues to bark at me like a big game making me chase him down and correct him for him to just continue barking. Just simply moving or picking up my kids can trigger him to feel the need to get up and bark at me.
    But other times very random
    For example: I’ll just be sitting on the couch he’ll be laying down and just randomly get up and start barking in my face and he’s very persistent.
    He’s just so stubborn and never stops barking I try to correct him, reward him when he stops barking and etc but nothings made a difference.
    You’d think in a whole as a dog he’d be a big barker but no he really rarely barks out on walks at other dogs at other people besides the people who reside in the house or when he’s left alone.( which is a whole other issue since he’s a pandemic pup) I can never really get him to just settle down. I’ve never experienced any dog like this and have owned many dogs and breeds so if I could get some helpful tips or any advice, be able to send a video or just anything it would be greatly appreciated. It’s hard having twin toddlers and a dog yelling at you all day.

    Is it completely hopeless for an adult rescued pit bull + German shepherd? He never got out of the fear status and he's a 75 lbs bold boy who bullies when possible. That barking at your face? That is every night when we are on the sofa after he's training and exercise of the day...

    Any tips for how to deal with a 6 months old Border Collie puppy that is going through puberty and barks at people, unless they have a dog with them. Or to other (male) dogs across the street. He plays with new male dogs at the dogpark, but he can be very reactive to high energy dogs. He is a fearful, but bold dog that is smart and likes to test me.

    Hi, my 13-week old female pup was attacked, I had just begun lead training after playing in the park. as we were leaving she was attacked by a pitbull-type dog, how can I help her as she seems to have retreated into herself. I was using your methods we began having results, now however when she hears a dog bark she cowers yet at times shows she still wants to play but is sore, I can see she is different. Hi from Ireland..

    My dog very rarely barks, but he does do those chups you mentioned. Any insight into this, typically done in an alerting fashion. He’s an aussie so maybe a herding thing?

      That sounds like an outlet to relieve nervousness. My collies tend to whine instead of chuff. I correct them when they do it and praise them when they are relaxed.

    Hi, I absolutely love your vids. One thing I have noticed is that I've never seen you use or recommend a prong collar, obviously you're more about using your own strong energy, prince and psychology techniques. But I'd love to know what your thoughts are on prong collars and trainers using them? Thanks

    • @MB-lf8rm
      @MB-lf8rm 2 года назад +4

      Joel has talked about prong collars, in several of his videos. I think he thinks they are useful sometimes; but he also thinks those collars can make things worse, especially with a fearful or reactive dog.

Should I go over to her, lead her away, or try calling her and then do the go get method if she doesn't listen or say I see them and then call her away?

    You have him pegged! My 2 year old Dane (covid pup - socialized for the first 4-5 months, then very little thereafter). He's scared of every stranger that comes to the house (but once he knows you, he's super friendly)....unless they treat him as you did: with confidence. So far, after numerous attempts of getting a dog sitter to come to the house, only one person 'qualified'. He can sense fear - in even the best actor (although they're really not that good, because I can tell they're nervous :-) - and that scares him (I think he is confused as to why people are afraid of him - since he has no concept of his size). No day care will take him because he barks at any staff that are nervous around him, so I can't even get him socialized. Oddly, as long as I'm around, he's fine with strangers, so taking him to training classes hasn't worked; he's like the perfect student - but if I leave the room, he's exactly like this guy.

      How is he on walks? How would he behave hanging out on a public patio with strangers everywhere? I have a collie that is afraid of strangers. She lives on our secluded ranch so I'm not sure I can ever get her over that fear.

      @blujeans9462 2 года назад

      @@pamelakrumvieda3153 I live in-town so he sees people walking with or without their dogs past my porch all the time. He goes crazy - but has one eye looking back to see if I'm there. I give him one verbal correction and he stops. Because of his reactivity to dogs - along with dog attacks that have happened in my area - I don't take him for walks. I only take him to the park when no one else is there. Someone else comes, I leave. He won't say no to an altercation if the other dog starts it; but is a perfect gentleman when I take him to group training sessions, with dozens of dogs around him. So the trainers don't see his reactivity and hence can't show me how to train him. It's been a challenge for me - I've owned danes for decades and none have been so confused (under socialized) as this one.

    • @Flippokid
      @Flippokid 2 года назад +1

      Look away. That's the best signal to them that you're not looking for a fight. Closing the umbrella could help too, but then you would be empowering that dog to bark at people with umbrellas. But that's for the owner to deal with 🤷‍♂

    • @Flippokid
      @Flippokid 2 года назад +1

      @@Jordan-zt1ky Yeah the best way is to completely ignore them. Not standing stiff 'actively not looking', but pretending they're not there. Walking past them, not acknowledging them. That's usually too hard if you're afraid, so the next best thing is looking away, or even turning around. Dogs don't sucker punch people unless they're trained to do that.

    • @jillsy2815
      @jillsy2815 2 года назад +1

      Depends if the ears were pinned, backing up, tail low like in this vid that would mean the dog is barking because it was afraid of you. I always say something like , "Hi Sweetheart. Who's barking? Hi Sweetheart" and they usually stop🐾❤️

    "...this dog, who has some fear, but is also a bold dude..." Looks to me he's just at ease around other dogs. That's what he understands, what he likes. They met properly (as far as the video shows) with them smelling each other and Prince walking away on your leave it. And then he initiated play.
    He doesn't seem fearful to you then, but his parents are also right there. So it looks like he's insecure without them, or just fearful of being put in a room with a strange guy that acts like he's the boss :P

      It was a mostly peaceful slap so let’s reward that behavior with a standing ovation. Well, it was within criteria for an elite. When he walked (lunged) up there, he needed to hit the end of the leash and give himself a correction. Putting aside my weird sense of humor, I can’t help but feel pity for such a broken man.
