Ratatoskr, I've tried getting into outward several times, but can't seem to ever get truly into it. I found it... idk... it felt like the difficulty Spiked to extremes sometimes. The combat was also very clunky 😓

Let’s go!! I’m so excited, I discovered your channel AGES ago with your Outward coverage, it’s been a joy to watch your channel explode since then, you really deserve it and your style and analysis is peeress and unforgettable. The Dostoevsky Elden Ring video is a masterpiece. Keep up the great work, love the podcast and your collaboration with other creators. Top RUclipsr
My biggest problem in Outward 1 was that exploring the world felt at odds with progressing my character. I want to go on really big trips where I travel long distances, meandering across the map all while just camping and making do with whatever I can find. However, what I actually ended up doing was clearing one cave, filling my pack, then going to a town to sell things so I could buy new skills/gear/supplies and meaningfully progress my character. Having skill progression based on a resource that relies on selling items that fill up your carry weight seems so antithetical to the adventurous spirit of Outward. Filling your inventory weight or wanting to get a new skill just absolutely halted any sort of adventure I was having and made me walk back to the same city for the 20th time. The quest design made you walk back and forth to the same places. The skill system made you walk back and forth to the same places. Overreliance on gold made you walk back and forth to the same places. Too many things wanted you to walk back and forth, and if you wanted to do it efficiently it was on the exact same routes over and over. My biggest hope that they design the map / quests / skills / gold / inventory weight systems so that I do more big adventures and less walking back and forth. Combat was fine in the first one, but an improvement is much welcomed. For me though, I just hope they put just as much effort into improving the other systems.
What I found different in Outward compared to RPG is that you don't have to be "perfect" hero when fighting the enemy. In other RPG, usually you have to grind a lot before advancing to the next quest, otherwise the fight will be hard. Therefore grinding is encouraged while the next boss is waiting for you to level up. In Outward however, you are never meant to grind too much. Even grinding too much can lead to bad outcome (destruction of Cierzo for example). In Outward, the game was designed for you to rely more on your wit and tactics rather than just pure stats. Even with weak equipment, good preparation allows you to kill stronger opponent. On the contrary, good equipment with higher stats doesn't always equal easier fights (try using full steel plate in the desert). My suggestion is try to approach the game with that perspective.
@@Colesign Yeah, I think it would be nice to have traveling merchants be a very frequent encounter. Also make getting skills not reliant on the gold system and instead a more traditional xp system. For skills, I imagine a system where you visit a trainer and buy a skill book for a branch of a skill tree. Once you have bought it from the trader then you can unlock skills in that book from anywhere once you have the experience points for it. That way you still need to take trips out to the specific trainer but it will be less frequent and allow you to gain skills while adventuring.
I am one of those people that bounced off Outward 1. In theory, it's a game I should've loved, but I couldn't quite get into it. Excited to hear there's a sequel with improvements - I will definitely give this one a go
i had a really weird experience with outward 1 i played it on launch and loved it, but recently i got my friend to buy it when deluxe was on sale through steam and we had to force ourselves to finish the game, and idk if that was down to multiplayer being a worse experience or what happened.
Same...I had to keep putting it down...and coming back to it...because like you said, should've been a game I loved...but the clunkiness frustrated me everytime I picked it back up...for sure gonna give 2 a go also...
Oh man, this is exciting. I have been looking forward to your coverage of this game! As others have commented, your Outward review was the first video I saw of yours, so this feels kind of special in a way, which I'm sure it must also feel like for you. Can't wait for more of your videos covering Outward 2!
Smoothing it out and giving more options for combat is a big yes for me I was one of those that loved the concept and the general vibe they where going for but felt the overall gameplay was just a little too clunky for me This sounds GREAT
I bought Outward 1 at full price because of your recommendation, and only got about 8-10 hours of gameplay before throwing in the towel. Hopefully the improvements in the sequel will retain more players. I still think it's a cool game though
Seriously can't wait for this one. Outward one took me back to playing Morrowind when it came out, the sense of adventure and mystery was done so well.
Outward was one the more refreshing surprises in the last few years, always welcome when the developer respects the player. Looking forward to what they do in the sequel.
Right? Not gonna name names but some devs could really take a note from Nine Dots. Build upon what is good about your game, and actually pay attention to players' issues with it. Long as they keep up this trend they have the potential to become one incredible game company. Notably the customer isn't always right, but take From Soft. They have a formula, it works, and it's proven to be appealing to more than hard-core gamers with Elden Ring. But they stay true to what they do well while still putting in effort to make a game that works for more people. Nine Dots could do it.
I'm very excited to see how the magic system evolves. I loved the combo system, it was just a little barebones. I'm glad it's not going in some dramatic redesign direction and is just building on it's previous system and improving it.
Playing Outward as I saw this video, got back into it after DD2. Really hype for the sequel, Outward is one of my favorite RPGs ever. I think what excited me the most in this preview was the double skill slots which was MUCH needed.
Wow, your analysis of the Outward 2 preview was much better than that of the gaming company IGN, thank you for the possible information so far, I really liked these details about the use of two different weapons, the possibilities, hopefully it will be possible to use 2 pistols too, it would be really cool and more agile since it's a weapon that takes a while to load the shot, another good addition was more slots for us to use, because it helps a lot to equip more skills, more weapons for status and potions in the shortcuts without having to access the backpack .
Hell yeah. Outward one was an absolute gem, an unpolished for sure but still a gem! Excited for the sequel. I hope the very interesting philosophy behind the magic systems returns.
I found you originally for your outward guides and was so sad when you stopped making content for it. So happy for the potential of this game and getting to see you make outward content again!
Was waiting for this vid! Loved Outward, but it always felt like it missed some polish. Can't wait to play this and recommend this to all my friends if it improves Outwards base mechanics :D Amazing showcase of the combos. They really blew my mind. I'm so insanely looking forward to this!
I heard you talk about it before but never looked up gameplay. The fantasy setting looks a lot more colorful than I thought it would be, and the creature designs look nice. Might have to try it out.
I saw the Outward 2 announcement, and immediately thought "I hope Ratatoskr has a video on this soon", and boy do you not disappoint. I was scared off of Outward by the clunky combat and seeming lack of polish (I am basic, I know it). This sounds like great improvements, and I'm very excited to play Outward 2.
Outward was an amazing gem of a game that I saw and got interested in after watching CohhCarnage back in 2019 and I bought it and put in over 70hours. Can't wait to try the sequel, since it's been announced.
Outward's unique adventure against personal adversity is something I absolutely cherished, made Dragon's Dogma 2 such a delight to travel through after accepting it, and a big part of why I'm very much looking forward to more of it from Outward 2. I just desperately hope the world and its denizens "interact with you and your exploits" more. I want more meaningful relationships with others in the world to really make it very clear just how much you're improving, and also keep your expectations of your capabilities somewhat in check, with rivals who are just like you and can be just as strong, and others who are vulnerable and need you to be as strong as you're growing. Opportunities for heroism and that fantasy fulfillment of self-actualization and recognition, etc. Despite having three "factions" everything not combat was just background scenery in the first game.
Outward has a classic no hand holding rpg feel to it and it's why it's so loved by a handful of people who understand how fun discovery was in open world games back in the day. You could wonder in on direction, end up in a cave, and find amazing enemies, loot, lore and experience. It seriously brings a different type of vibe. Hard to explain
This is good to hear, I was one of the people who bounced off the combat. Not og lords of the fallen clunky but it still just didn't click, excited to try this out when it comes out!
As someone who loved the first Outward despite its clunk, I'm really excited by the polish seen in this gameplay! The basic combat mechanics (particularly the tap for light attack/hold for heavy attack feature) seems to have a lot more depth (which'll reward players who master them when they start a new game cycle).
i still play Outward all the time, so fun to pick up and start a new char. i hope they keep a similar loot system, i love getting random stuff and also how all the chests respawn ❤
Outward 1 was such a great expieience playing through it blind and spoiler free. After that I played through it multiple times with different builds. never got around to playing the DLCS though. I'm really looking forward to the sequel and you covering the game :)
Sorobor is worth a play. Adds enchanting, both skill trees are fun, and side quest is one of the best dungeon crawlers in history. Personally, I feel like Three Brothers is amazing in concept but takes way too long with way too many steps.
Heck yeah, now this is probably the most exciting change I could have ever wanted for a sequel! I also am in love with the freedom to slow 1H weapons however you like and really mix and match with them. Dual wield shields even! Can bet I look forward to sword and dagger 😁
this looks soo floaty and weightless, i'll freely admit that outward was too heavy and slow but this seems floaty even compared to similar combat systems like dragons dogma and mh. this isn't about easy or hard or fun, this is about outward's combat being more about resource management and tactics than button skill and combat i like the way it looks and it seems a lot better for some. but i don't know if it will be for me, kinda seems like a good game for my friends who couldn't get past the aggressive unfriendliness that separates outward from its peers but still want the "skyrim survival mod" parts
Outward is the best couch co-op game I have ever played, which is rare form in modern gaming. I would say the most valid criticisms of the original game were the clunky melee combat and inability to put more than a small handful of skills on your hot bar. Ninedots knew exactly what they wanted to fix and released the demo to say, "see, we know what's up". I don't fall into hype very often because I'm so used to being let-down, but it's hard not to hype about Outward 2 because I can see the fact this game is going to be a masterpiece right in front of my eyes.
It really does look smoother and it seems like they made is more realistic without making it too casual, they actually made great decisions trying to navigate those two
I'm honestly super excited for Outward 2. My biggest issue with Outward was that I couldn't experience it for the first time again. With the sequel, I will be able to enjoy exploring again.
I hope they work on the world building and quests and immersion. I spend weeks modding my oblivion (or skyrim for that matter) to get something close to vanilla outward in term of magic mechanics, survival, combat, ambiance, all those thing the game have it better than any other, it just lack something to do outside of exploring. We need activities, quests, npc interractions, voiceover, buildings to explore, people to meet, morality, etc. If they can keep what outward is and make it a gothic type of RPG world, this would be a legendary game
sounds really cool. I hope this game also has a story that is at least a bit more defined than the previous game. I've tried Outward twice, the second time I stopped playing after reaching the first town and dying in some of the dungeons around it while just roaming around
This is probably a pipe dream, but since they have pistols and spears in the first game, I've been really hoping for a bayoneted musket as a weapon in Outward 2. Being able to use the two-handed spear weapon moveset alongside the reload/fire option could open up some really cool build options if we get pistol shot style abilities like the first game. Fingers crossed!
I've played the first one, great game, time gated quest and no hand holding, no leveling system, depending of faction a permadeath system too, temperatures to survive etc, really cool and relentless adventure and survival game ❤. Hope a split screen coop like the first one, It was awesome really.
I was already excited for Outward 2, and now I'm even more so. Outward seemed like right up my ally, but I've struggled to get into it because of the clunky feel. The sequel seems to address all the issues I've had with the first one. This might be one of the few games I buy at full price.
I loved the concept of the first one so much and really wanted to play it.. I probably tried getting into it 5 or 6 times, but it just didn't catch, mostly due to jankiness. This time around it sounds much better!
I noticed the lack of HP & Stamina burn in the footage, and it concerns me. HP/stamina burn was my favorite mechanic of the original game. It added a lot of immersion and was such an elegant way to incorporate numerous survival mechanics.
I think it might just be because this demo focussed on the new animations and combat and less on survival mechanics - it would really surprise me if they got rid if it
This is pretty exciting. I am the second kind of person you mentioned. I couldn't get into the first game cause the combat was too clunky. I'll definitely give this a shot again when it releases
Outward is the first game I talked about on this channel. So happy I get to cover the sequel.
That’s awesome that you got in on the preview! Well deserved, and I’m so excited to see this one progress.

Outward is great, it feels like a halfway between a dnd campaign and a souls game.
Once again thank you for introducing me to outward.
The most important thing is, do they have the same composer who worked no the first game for Outward 2? The music in Outward is absolutely incredible and unique.
Same composer, yeah!
yes !
This IS the most important... and YES!
Yes, AND if you listen closely you can hear the first song he did for Outward 2 playing in the demo at around 6 minutes in

Opportunities for heroism and that fantasy fulfillment of self-actualization and recognition, etc. Despite having three "factions" everything not combat was just background scenery in the first game.
This looks great. I loved the first game. Especially the desert.
It's crazy how improved the combat looks. I love Outward, I was hoping we'd get a sequel, those animations look fantastic.
this is great to see. it was your video on outward that made me get it in the first place and after seeing this I'm even more excited for outward 2
The first game was proof that a small indie studio can make a better open world game than many AAA studios. The second will be even better.
Ratatoskr Outward Era has returned! So excited for the future of this sequel and more of your vids!
OUTWARD 2 BABY THIS DOESNT WORRY ME
As someone who loved the first Outward despite its clunk, I'm really excited by the polish seen in this gameplay! The basic combat mechanics (particularly the tap for light attack/hold for heavy attack feature) seems to have a lot more depth (which'll reward players who master them when they start a new game cycle).
bro outward is for real ones! its all time great. did not know about the sequel, i am hyped !!!!
i still play Outward all the time, so fun to pick up and start a new char. i hope they keep a similar loot system, i love getting random stuff and also how all the chests respawn ❤
As a left handed historical (rapier and dagger) fencer irl, these changes make me very happy :)
this looks soo floaty and weightless, i'll freely admit that outward was too heavy and slow but this seems floaty even compared to similar combat systems like dragons dogma and mh.
this isn't about easy or hard or fun, this is about outward's combat being more about resource management and tactics than button skill and combat
i like the way it looks and it seems a lot better for some. but i don't know if it will be for me, kinda seems like a good game for my friends who couldn't get past the aggressive unfriendliness that separates outward from its peers but still want the "skyrim survival mod" parts
It really does look smoother and it seems like they made is more realistic without making it too casual, they actually made great decisions trying to navigate those two
I sincerely hope the fist weapons return. Imagine the wrapon combos with two fist weapons.
Using square and x to attack sounds like a pain.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing hmm 🤔, would be nice to use the triggers
OMG!! Outward is one of my fav RPGs ever!! I'm so exited for Outward 2
I loved Outward 1 and I'm looking forward to the sequel.
looks like UE5? Really glad to see the first game sold enough for a sequel to be made.
I'm honestly super excited for Outward 2. My biggest issue with Outward was that I couldn't experience it for the first time again. With the sequel, I will be able to enjoy exploring again.
YES after Dragon's Dogma this was easily the game I wanted a sequel for the most
Nice! :) cant wait to see more magic and what they choose to do with Chakrams
Hoping for a theme to rival the marshlands theme
I bought Outward after watching your video on the DE and just realized I've not gotten around to it. Time to change that
Looking forward to it
I hope they work on the world building and quests and immersion.
This looks amazing. Basically seems to pull a DD2 in keeping the game intact but making it better. Excited to play this
I wish it wasn't so far off, but I am looking forward to this game more than any other.
I'm so excited for this. Look great!
Outward is one of my favorite games of all time. I hope the sequel is able to retain the mysticism and wonder the first game invoked
You ok? It’s been a good while and last I knew you were getting a lot of flak so I just want to check on you.
The combat sounds prefect
When are you going to make a new video? Did you quit RUclips over the Dragon’s Dogma 2 drama?
Experts confirmed that we do in fact live in the Golden Age of Having Diarrhea.
I've played the first one, great game, time gated quest and no hand holding, no leveling system, depending of faction a permadeath system too, temperatures to survive etc, really cool and relentless adventure and survival game ❤. Hope a split screen coop like the first one, It was awesome really.
I really hope they can make the combat feel less like wet ass than outward 1
oh hey, you got the demo. nice! 👍
edit: oh god, with dual wielding and more slots, pistol builds are gonna be nuts.
I am so excited! I loved outward so much this looks fantastic
Loved the first outward, cant wait for this one!
I was already excited for Outward 2, and now I'm even more so. Outward seemed like right up my ally, but I've struggled to get into it because of the clunky feel. The sequel seems to address all the issues I've had with the first one. This might be one of the few games I buy at full price.
Outerward 1 was a game that always i wanted to try
I loved the concept of the first one so much and really wanted to play it.. I probably tried getting into it 5 or 6 times, but it just didn't catch, mostly due to jankiness.
This time around it sounds much better!
Feel like the region showcased is gonna be Haboob. Also I hope the UI looks more stylized in the future like the first game.
Yeah 1 looked neat, but the clunky game play did put me off. This could be the improvement I need.
Heck yeah a sequel! Loved the first game.
can't wait for the thanos snap build videos
I noticed the lack of HP & Stamina burn in the footage, and it concerns me. HP/stamina burn was my favorite mechanic of the original game. It added a lot of immersion and was such an elegant way to incorporate numerous survival mechanics.
I think it might just be because this demo focussed on the new animations and combat and less on survival mechanics - it would really surprise me if they got rid if it
@@artival22 ya it also did not have carry weight for pocket so they probably had a lot of stuff disabled to just be able to showcase.
Looking forward to this one, loved the first
The new dual wield mechanic reminds me of Shadow of Rome on the PS2 and I mean that in the best possible way.
This is looking good and having rata demo it gives me some good hype
This is pretty exciting. I am the second kind of person you mentioned. I couldn't get into the first game cause the combat was too clunky. I'll definitely give this a shot again when it releases
I hope the rune casting makes a comeback
hoping local co-op sticks around. it was the best way to play
Looks more fluid and i cant wait.
Would actually love to see them add special movesets for dual wielding different weapons in Elden Ring. Image the slew of new possibilities.
What?! I didn’t even know they were working on a sequel!
This looks great
wow im so excited for this. one of the very few non from soft ware games thats an RPG i've actually enjoyed
this and Kenshi 2 is what i'm waiting for
