It's a very tribal thing and all about your city's pride. Ultras are basically organized supporter groups of die-hard fans. They initiate the chants and organize the choreos, travel to all games etc. Pyro and flares are illegal, hence the masks to not be identified. There are consequences when caught. A lot of rules are imposed on how Ultras should behave, which they disagree with. That's why the police representing the state and League are sometimes seen as enemies. Home and away fans are always strictly separated. At rivalry games, most action goes down.

I'm German. I think the reason is that Europe has always been at war with each other and taking land from each other. That is why there is a great love of home in Europe. I only watch football on TV and I'm not a hooligan, but if I was in a game from my home country, drank a lot of alcohol and our rivals insult us all the time, I think I would attack the others with my team because it's feels like they're belittling our homeland and finding their homeland better than ours. I know this sounds ridiculous, but imagine if we were to slander your homeland, your origins and everything you stand for all the time. We hate each other but when it comes to our homeland we are all united and fighting side by side.

Shots would not fire in the U.S., or at least no always.
We were at a game in New Jersey (traveling fans from New York) and among fighting amongst ourselves, stadium security, our own team's staff & security team & the Harrison Police Department had no control of the situation in the stadium (mind you cops, staff members & security were having beer also thrown at them). So when there's large numbers in 1 concentrated area, even here in the U.S., there's not much you can do.

First off, as many said in the comments already, this is tribal and you are born into it.
2nd it's a huge part of the culture.
This is where you go and vent, you let it all out, all of the hardships that you endure, all the problems that you have, you shout until your throat is sore, it's an adrenaline rush for 90mins
    also:
    - you don't go to the ultras stands when you just started going to the games
    - the chanting never stops, you eventually pick it all up in a couple of games
    - if you choose to become an part of any ultras group, by that time you will already know all the chants and not just the chants, but a lot of other things (what ultras stand for and what they represent)

  • @snuffybg

Every country outside the US has its own ultras and rivals so any big game that has active ultras on stadiums (some are banned) will give you that exp. There is a somewhat more safe zone so do your research before the game. GL & HF. I am from Eastern Europe so here are many. Local police block the city on such games so make sure u are here before that or else u may miss most of the fun. Also, park away your car from the stadium because the losing team may damage your car for no reason. Stay close to the exit or officers if you feel in danger. It's not so fun if things go crazy. As for how they get fliers and stuff - Ultras have some privileges to enter with some of that stuff but they are on record. If a person smuggles and is captured and proven by the court they are facing a big fine or jail and ban from events as any country. But here the control is not that great so people feel unpunishable. It's a big topic for a single comment but if you want insides pm me ill share more details. Its a way of life in a few words. Same as any other sport such as cars, bikes, boxing, etc.

As for the chants some of them are over 20 to 30 or even 50 years old and you learn them from the moment you become part of the team. Some chants are yet to be made because they can be based on anything about the club including the history or the players or a rival team so new situations will get a new chant. For instance I am an Arsenal fan and our local rivals are a team called Tottenham and about a year ago a new chant was “Tottenham get battered everywhere they go, Tottenham get battered everywhere they go, everywhere they go” because they kept loosing away games ( on the road games as you call them) us fans over here are the life blood of each club no matter how big or small that club is. We show up in the teams colours and wave our flags to push out our chest to the other teams, and build friendship with them at times because we all love the game

Most stadiums are considered "public area", and the fans are hiding them in the stadium with at least 2-3 days before an important/derby match, so the police never knows where and when the fans are hiding them 😉

@@AandTReacts Well, our country is much, much smaller so the comparison isn’t fair really, though the US police force seems somewhat trigger happy 😬, for not much of a reason sometimes and we all know there are some people afraid of being stopped by the police bc they’re targeted and risk being shot for no reason at all 😰.
I think the training is very different. In Sweden, you go to the police academy for two years of studies and then you work for 6 months being like a trainee or something before you get cleared for the the job or not. When you apply, you take tests to see if you’ll fit being a police: language skills, physical tests and psychology tests.
In heated situations, Swedish police are trained to do everything to de-escalate the situation. They are only allowed to shoot under certain circumstances and there an investigation afterwards to see that everything went down right.

Hard to pick one, are born into a club for good or bad, I would say find a city in Europe similar to yours (for instance Birmingham has a Pittsburgh vibe both are former steel towns) as a way to find a team. This shows some bad sides of Ultras, but in Germany Ultras also delivered food to seniors during COVID and do other community support projects. A team like St. Pauli is known for their anti-fascist stances and aid local war refugees or immigrants in integrating into German society. Lots of good stuff out there!!

I’m an American from CA but it’s hard to pick a club for me because I’m not British. The same goes for La Liga, Bundesliga, etc, but I love watching football! As for the EPL, the only team that I feel I can choose, based on what you were saying, is Liverpool because I love the Beatles. I also used to skateboard a lot when I was younger and one of my favorite pro skateboarders was Geoff Rowley who is also from Liverpool. But I hate picking a team that always wins. I’d rather pick a team from 2nd division to watch them move up from a relegated position to top flight. I can never experience that here in the states because we don’t do pro/rel, unfortunately.

One day you will see a team and say "Damn I like the way they play" and that will make the choice for you. Maybe a Napoli, Atalanta, Frankfurt, or Lyon. You'll sing songs that people have been associated with the club for many years and songs and chants are created for favourite players.. chants to mock the opposition and make intimidating atmosphere for opposition

The real Ultra doesnt go to the stadium to watch the game...if after a game someone knows if the team played good or bad and after that he tells you he is utltra, then he is a liar...and we, east european ultras, have a saying: you can change your car, your hause, your wife and your religion...but NEVER the team that you support.

If you want a real atmosphere come overher to balkan croatia, serbia, bosnia, greece. And you complaining for being searched imagine someone grabbin you a everywhere looking for flares everything is smuggled in btw... And you gotta understand police react different with rioters compared to when they deal with career criminals attacking them. I mean i saw antifa and blm rioting all summer and in many cases police had orders to just sit there like ducks.. Anyway love your reaction and i just wanna explain this are actually mostly clips of just supporting your club with some innocent fighting but real stuff goes down before and after the game when we fight rival fans and police sometimes both at the same time ofc often fights happen on the stadium but these are light clips maybe because they would be censored if they showed real fights..

Oh and they are allowed to shoot and it happens sometimes actually few months ago they shot 4dudes because they were feeling in danger for their lifes and in that fight there was also 20cops injured but that is only when they are in fear for their lives if that was not the case it would be an execesive use of force because even with people attacking them they still have full riot geer, shields, helmets, and bats and those cops that are in those units most of them are very experienced in martial arts and they all lift weights, so you cannot justify shooting some dude because theres no reason for you to have serious fear of them if you have your geer on.. Even those ultras who live only for fighting and who are in martial arts themselves would have trouble fighting those riot cops even if cops had no geer because those cops are trained machines..

Where all the women? Sorry, but this is way too dangerous for women.
You don't pick a team to support. You are born wearing the colors of your team. Probably your dad or uncle or grandpa brings you to a game (not in the ultra sections of course) and everything else is history.

Nah In Eastern Europe you can't go to jail. The police cannot deal with hooligans. If a policeman tries to arrest a hooligan, the policeman will most likely be dead! You can not understand. there is a difference. In America, everything is different. In Eastern Europe the hooligans of a football team are almost invincible against the police. Im from Greece. and here no one can touch Football hooligans...also in the football stadium, no policeman can come close to the place where the fanatical fans of a team are. there would probably be a war!
